A Taste of Karaite Judaism in 30 Minutes or Less (Part 2)

    I gave a brief intro on Karaite Judaism to a group of 5th-7th graders from a conservative synagogue. The sound is not great, I was a bit rusty, my shirt collar was sticking out of my coat, but there is some good info here.
    A few notes:
    (1) I had wanted to encourage these students to take pride in their Jewish tradition, even though it is something difficult to do the right thing as a minority. I don't think that came across as well as I had wanted;
    (2) I slipped up at one point and stated that the reason Karaites pray on rugs is likely due to the Rabbinic prohibition of prostrating on "concrete." I should have said "stone," as I did elsewhere during the presentation; and
    (3) When discussing the differences between Karaite and Rabbanite dietary laws, I was asked why shawarma is generally not permissible for Karaites. I should have just said that it usually seasoned with a particular type of fat that is specifically prohibited in the Torah. Instead I grossed the kids out by telling them where the fat comes from.

    Wow! The karaites really have their history on point! My wife and I are coming towards the end of our conversion to orthodox judaism. We are finding alot of the way we see things in the tanakh seems to run parallel with karaites more and more!

    I've been listening to rabbanite videos and they are very good for information. But I came from a Mormon background; my whole family being Mormon, but I never believed in it. The thing tha irritated me most was them "adding" to scripture that which was never there in the first place. Then much later I realized that Christianity as a whole (mainly Paul) had done just that. Now I'm thinking the same thing about the Talmud. So many unecessary rules and regulations that are found nowhere in the Tanakh. So here I am looking into Karaiye Judaism.....not that I will want to convert because there are ao many things to learn and my living in Turkey simply would not allow me to keep the traditions that you find in the Jewish faith. Plus I ha e so many deeper queations that I'm not even sure anyone would be able to answer, but I'm searching diligently for the answers in the Tanakh. Shalom.

      Hi! I’m a Latter-day Saint convert. I was baptized last June and my family hasn’t been very supportive. I love the concept of the Restoration and the Plan of Salvation and the temple, but I’ve struggled with faith in Christ. I understand His Atonement and I do believe that He existed and died on the cross, but I’ve never been able to understand the idea behind him being the Savior. I don’t understand why His Atonement was necessary. I’ve always felt a call to Judaism so I’m here looking into it; Karaite Judaism is especially intriguing because - as much as love the Restoration and believe in the Book of Mormon - I feel that we should be returning to the source of monotheism. I’m not sure if I have as much faith in the Restored Gospel as I think I do, but I’m missing something right now and I think that I should do some searching. Are you still a practicing Latter-day Saint or have you changed your views?

    I have learned, and enjoyed the teaching .... except one major error. The Crusades were of Catholicism, not Christianity. (I am a Karaite) I just researched it.
    thru out history Catholicism even executed the Protestants because they believed everyone is responsible to study the Scriptures only.
    In a way Catholicism is similar to Rabbinic (Pope down to the priests tell people what the Scriptures say, and they also have a Oral Law where the Catholic via the pope teachings are equal or above Scripture) and Protestant is similar to Karaite. . Sadly, most protestants now have moved to letting only Pastors, Bishops, and Deacons can tell them what the scriptures say due to they don't feel they can properly study the scriptures .... but then most Jews seem to do the same, even some Karaites.

      Protestantism came out of the Catholic Church.... Protestant réformation..... in Europe you were either catholic or Protestant.... eg looking at the English royal family who fought tirelessly again a catholic invasion.... having Protestant or catholic rulers on the throne.... during and before the Middle Ages.... there’s no difference between Protestants and catholic’s it’s just a play on words.... they both believe in jesus as the son of God and believe in the trinity and an New Testament and also believe in the persecution of Jews.... the crusaders were mostly catholic but also Protestant whose belief was to liberate Jerusalem from the Jews and Muslims alike.... don’t forget the inquisitions were not just Spanish or Portuguese it was happening all over Europe and in Britain against Jews..... remember hitler killed Jews because like many Christians and Catholics believe that Jews killed Jesus.......everything that catholics and Protestants believe is forbidden by Torah......simple...

      @Torah Muscle Shalom, You are correct. Sorry my PTSD (Military/HC) lack of sleep that day. Have repaired it r/t Time Line. Correct ML hated Jews, many of the Protestant reformers were prior Catholics Priests. Catholicism has been removing "Hebrew / Yisrael / Jewishness" from the Bible since ~3-4th Century including the Change of Sabbath.
      So many/most Protestant Reformers were antisemitic. The reason many protestant preachers/etc here on YT are anti using YHWH, Yashua, or even "Sin" via changing it to "Rebellion".
      Being a old Vet; I learned during war (including Crusades) there are always Protestants (play on words) who protest the war, or being attacked. So there were in a way Protestants in the Crusades, they even were protesting Catholic Crusaders back then, they were Muslims and Jews together were fighting Crusaders.

    Hi..I really enjoyed your presentation and I hope you do more of them. It helps all Jews and all people to know about all strains of Judaism. Although I am secular, I live in an orthodox community here in Beit Shemesh, Israel. The suburb I live in is Ramat Beit Shemesh (Aleph) and while it has several variations of orthodox Jews, I don't think there are any Karaite's here. Being in Israel (I moved here to be closer to my sister and her family) I have had the chance to ask lots of questions and have really good discussions with the Jews here.
    My rabbinical friends are quite demonstrative in their poor opinion of Karaite philosophy. Rabbi's, as I am sure you understand, are the bosses and their opinions in many cases, for many Jews, rivals that of halacha.
    There are so many questions, and I will read your blog (thanks for that, it is really well done) but perhaps you can clear up one point that I am really confused about. The prevailing opinion here among the people I have spoken to say that without the Oral Tradition, we would not be able to read the Torah. The reason being that in the Torah itself God gave us no way to vocalize the vowel sounds, that the vocalization instructions are in the Oral Torah. I may have misunderstood this, it has confused me, and perhaps you could, at your convenience, clear that up for me.
    Thanks very much and keep up your good work. It is very valuable to those of us who want to learn more about our people.
    Joe

      The Orthodox masses have been brainwashed with the Rabbinic claim that the "oral" torah contains the Niqqud system. But I have yet to see ANY Ortho reveal on social media sites exactly where it is within the body of Rabbinic literature considered the "oral" torah. That so many Orthodox Jews regurgitate this argument without questioning it is a testimony to the power of indoctrination.
      The "Tiberian" Niqqud system was invented or passed down by the non-Rabbinic, really Qaraite Ben-Asher family of Masoretes.
      Halakha is bad enough in the view of Qaraite Jews and their fellow travelers in its incongruennce with the actual Torah. That it is not followed in Orthodoxty in various areas (e.g. the near universal abandonment of soft Matzot, not sleeping in the Sukkot even when wheather permits and the discontinuation of prostration in prayer with the exception of Yom Kippurim) and the fact so many Jews consider the rabbis effectively above Halakha is stark evidence of the "bankruptcy" of Rabbinic Judaism.

    We, Muslims, don't exclusively pray on rugs. It was originally only on sand and the floor because they were poor in the early Islamic period. Rugs aren't even important for the prayer itself. Even some Shiite wouldn't pray on a rug from what I have heard.
    Even for secular academics, I don't think they all believe the Islamic prayer is derived from Judaism. I have heard academics say that it is related to the eastern orthodox prayer. Obviously I don't believe that but I have never heard a suggestion that it is related to Judaism.

    Muslims didn't borrow this type of prayer from Jews. Because according to Islam, there is only one religion, Prophets Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mohammad (may the peace upon them all) all prayed like this (maybe with tiny differences). They always spoke of the same message to everyone. The path to ALLAH. We as Muslims believe in original scriptures of Torah and the Bible because Quran confirms them all.
    " Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allah (the one and only God) and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allah ." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]." " ----------- Quran 3:64
    "He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel." ----------- Quran 3:3

      From what I've heard you'd need to convert again to their branch of judaism, whether you're a jew or not, which makes sense because of all the differences. But what I've also heard from them, one major difference in my opinion, the term ger is only used for people in the process of conversion. Means as soon you're done, they won't consider you a convert on any level. You wouldn't be a guest that came to live with them so I'd doubt they would reject you like other jews maybe did.

    I'm a Bal Teshuva myself so here is an opinion of someone who has lived both worlds. The authenticity of Karait Jews is not the subject of my comment, as I think there are among us many orthodox Jews with questionable lineage. In that regards Judaism as we have it today is going through a fundamental process and a much needed one. Bit that is a subject for another time. The karait practice suffers exactly from the same principal but on a diametrically opposed ends of the spectrum called normal intellectual behavior. Orthodoxy takes every detail biblical exegesis of Rabbis as a word of GD and the karaits completely disregard it. In fact neither practice is correct. To accept every ruling by Rabbis is blind faith whilst to completely and utterly deny all of them is heresy. Karaits stump the spiritual potential growth within humanity while orthodoxy stumps the scientific advancement of the cognitive mind. In both situations you have as leaders failed to creat a complete soul, neither for yourselves nor for the next generations. We need to come together on this but unfortunately as it stands this utopian world is light years away.

    • @ZviJ1
      @ZviJ1 4 года назад +1

      While you are entitled to your perspective, it is partly informed by ignorance. Far from disregarding Rabbinic exegesis, many Qaraite Sages have seen great importance in studying Rabbinic texts like the Talmud. Many of them believe it is desirable to embrace its parts that jive with the actual Torah.
      Secondly, the heresy you mention is only a problem when one labors under the premise that Rabbinic authority over the Jewish people is something correct.
      Thirdly, there is an immense degree of spirituality in Qaraite worship AND the earnest attempts to adhere to Elohim's actual desire, stated within the Miqra, rather than Rabbinic misinterpretations.

    • @mordechaihakimpour894
      @mordechaihakimpour894 4 года назад

      @@ZviJ1 thank you for the reply however weak lacking substance. One can not deny countless Rabbanim in possession of spiritual sensitivity and their clairvoyance all of which is partly attributed to work of Halacha, Zohar, Chassidut etc. Patach Eliyahu is just one open source for Sfirot and the Tefilin that Karaits don't wrap. The fact the Karaits have not been able to produce such spiritually sensitive Rabbanim is a testimony to mundane nature of this belief system. I don't deny the importance of personal scrutiny of the verses but when it falls too far away from the work of our Holy sages then is nothing more than bad habits, mistaken Minhagim and down right hubris. To promulgate generational travesty in this case karaite practice is as damaging as the preponderance of current outdated Halacha system.

    • @ZviJ1
      @ZviJ1 4 года назад +1

      @Mordechai Hakimpour < LOL > "Weak".... "hubris".... thou do project much (like many other Rabbanites). The crux of the matter is that your sages are not holy and are, in fact, fallable. They gave themselves their own supposed authority by taking words from Devarim 17:8-13 out of context and pretending that this passage means something totally different than what it actually intends.
      Your rabbis have invented lots of erroneous things and out-and-out nonsense, be it Minhagim and more obligatory innovations.
      Qabalah and the Sefirot in particular are idolatry.
      Your conviction that the Qaraite Jews lack "spiritually sensitive" sages is, again, your own opinion. I and others have noticed the opposite.
      I can easily debunk the Tefillin interpretation of the Miṣwot for the Ot and Ṭoṭafot, but I am somewhat impatient and short on time now. I have done this hundreds of time in arguments with Rabbanites and their apologists on this site and elsewhere.
      Give us a break here, you will not abandon anything in Halakha, no matter how clearly its incorrectness is shown to you. I could also show you how the supposedly Chain of Transmission" from Moshe b. `Amran down to the last Talmudic rabbis suffers from some chronological holes. None of this will faze you, let alone to the degree of turning your back on Rabbinism for any form of Scriptural Judaism.

Once 80% of Jews were Karaite's just because so many Jews were in the Diaspora and cannot understand Hebrew the Rabbi's did their thinking for them. One of the reasons we have Shabbat elevators here in Israel a very annoying law. Because the Karaite's lived in Jerusalem they were decimated by the Crusader's. I am a vegetarian and laugh that the Karaite's do mix meat and dairy if they want but they will not eat Shawarma because the fat on the top comes from the tail of a sheep and in the Torah it is forbidden to eat it :-)

      Why Turkish origin.... Turks came from Asia central not Asia Minor... where Turkey is situated today......the Hebrew came from Mesopotamian region but were a mixed multitude when then left Mizrahim (Egypt in modern Africa) Exodus 12 v 38

      He is referencing the converted Khazar Jews. I mean they utterly dominate the Jewish diaspora but it's a mistake to assume that all Jews share a similar origin.

      If some Khazars converted to Judaism, they were subsequently killed in battles. Not even a shred of genetic, historical or linguistic evidence has been found that the Khazars left any influence -- much less any that has endured among the Jews up to modern times. We Jews laugh at you antisemitic nincompoops for buying into all that false trash and advancing it.

    One correction. The Catholics are not biblical Christians, and it's a bit unfair that the "Crusades" and other atrocities of old resulting in Jewish oppression, are labeled as "Christian" movements. Protestants don't appoint priests or popes, don't pray the Rosary, and don't partake in the adoration of saints or of Mary. There are no statues to which we prostrate ourselves before. In short Catholicism is counterfeit Christianity seeped in Idolatry. Anyway on a different note, what do you guys think about the discovery of murex trunculus, as possibly the original source of the blue dye for tzi tzis?

    This guy should stick to talking about Jewish history... making up stories about Islamic history really puts his credibility into question.
