I tried this technique at work this week and I have to say it works great. I was using a similar keyhole-dip method but I was having trouble making it look consistent on the inside. What really helps is walking the whole width of the bevel instead of just the width of your gap. It really helps to make sure your keyhole doesn’t get out of control on you. Thanks for this video!

This is exactly what they should be teaching these kids when they first learn how to weld! Face feeding is key! Especially when taking a weld test! I took a no grinder weld test on a 2” sch. 10 for a uranium enrichment plant and the weld inspector asked fro 1/16 root reinforcement max! You achieve this by face feeding your filler wire! Not back feeding! In a real job scenario when getting your welds are x rayed and your dealing with thin wall pipe or small bore 2” ,1 “ and below you need to always try to face feed and when you can’t face feed grab a smaller filler wire 1/16 and use it to back feed! Awesome video!
I have watched this video more times than I can count I've been mighty and spray welding for 10 years then me and My dad bought an Everlast 255 and I taught my self to tig no I'm a stainless pipe welder I started on roll cages and small bore carbon then moved to aluminum where I work now I'm back in pipe welding stainless this video has helped me a lot I still have trouble walking te cup but it's not terrible
Been doing a lot of this schedule 10 at several chemical plants here in North Carolina, I'm breaking out as a pipe welder and you guys couldn't have picked a better time to upload this tutorial, it's nice that I can learn a little more than just welding from this channel, thank you guys and be blessed

@@WELDorDIE Hey man I would like to get up with you for a minute on the phone. I'm 26 and have been welding pipe for about 6 years. Unfortunately Ive had 4 back surgeries in the past two years. I don't want to give up welding but would like to maybe open a school myself down in Mississippi.
@@dingaling6030 If you are talking about facefeeding and getting reinforcement on the bottom, than yes. This technique will work with carbon but be cautious as you can get suck back on the bottom.
This technique appeals to me, I was thought No gap feathered bevel and feed little wire on the first pass, downside is you have no idea what the inside is like, so I am going to try this method. Thanks a lot great work
Great video, much better for me compared to most videos ive watched. Im very happy to see a video gving us a face feed technique, im having too much troubke trying to back feed it just dont work for me. Unless someone has the magic tip dont want to keep at it, especially since you may not always be able to weld it that way if its out of position I like the poem too

I’m not sure if he mentioned it but make sure you poke some holes on the tape when ur abt to tie in on the root. So the argon doesn’t push the root back out
Do you hold the filler wire on top of the weld on sides so you don’t get undercut or do you keep it in the middle I was getting undercut on the sides a little bit
@@kristianskov4841 Maybe backfeeding produces more buildup on the root than facefeeding or atleast aims for it? I like both, pears and apples that is, but I find backfeeding method a little bit trickier.
The only point would be for "looking through the gap technique" which is basically backfeeding. Only difference between apples and pears, Apples you can see the root go in on the bottom, pears you're watching the walls breakdown then adding wire from the outside.
Is he going wall to wall when he dips, like is he doing wall to wall the hole time, or does he pause in the middle of the weld the dip then go wall to wall, or does he feed the wire when he dips and go wall to wall as the wire is being pushed/dipped… also looks like he’s got the wire kinda sideways instead of straight in when he dips
Did they fit it up with a 5/32 wire and it shrunk to a 1/8, or did they take it with a 1/8 wire and it’s a tight 1/8 gap…. I just tried this and my bottom was below flush because I felt like I couldn’t push wire because the bevel behind me was a tight 1/8…
Or if you want a slick wedding band effect instead of dimes. just keep that wire in the top edge of the puddle with light feeding pressure. Careful with just enough not to let it keyhole, no big deal if it does though. When doing this I will also walk really fast and really tight. When your done with the root pass there will be a noticeable line running down the center of the root on the outside ( sign that it in there ). My go to method. Takes some practice to make shure it breaks down the walls, but once you mastered it you can do it with your eyes closed.
I break arc on my wire when I'm pulling out of my puddle at the end i walk fast with no wire to cool the puddle just as he did. Right when you go to pull out of the arc make sure the puddle is not wet. Put the wire back on to the cap about 1/2 inch in front of the tungsten then pull out on the wire. Do this quick so the wire doesnt melt. Your arc marks will wonder up the wire not onto the pipe.
Scotty, thanks again for the great video and a few words to consider. One question though: what type of lens do you like in your helmet? Your videos are always my first stop, keep them coming! Sparky
I’ve always been scared of this one because all I ever learned was face feeding, every time I come across this test the inspector wants it back fed and I end up busting out because it is something I’ve never done consistently so I have trouble with it never tried it like this on stainless but I can stack them in on a aluminum test I guess feeding the wire would be similar just going from a freehand keyhole method I use on aluminum to walking the cup

What gap is used on the fit up and the amps used on pipe?

Im sure they know. Different ways to skin a cat.
Looks like he’s rolling over the filler wire on the cap not dipping,Or is he doing the 1-2-3 dip like the root?
1,2,3 only for root, walking the cup over filler wire for cap

How much gas is being purged in that much of the root open youd loose your purge???
So how much purge did you run on this demo ? The outside weld is black. So that would be exceptable in what field ?
Back feeding or laying/dipping the rod, is it by preference of welder or welding specifications procedures?
Preference
