This video bugged me for a long time for some reason and I think it’s because I realized Dolph seems to have really forgiven the past. You can tell he forgave his father at least. Dolph opens by telling us his father was abusive but later that he was a good guy and that he loved his father. I think he outgrew his trauma or at least accepted it. It’s almost like he pities the way his father was in terms of the abuse he took from his father, but knows there was some element of a good guy in there. I’m not at all condoning abuse just impressed with Dolph’s growth.

I always knew that Dolph was extremely intelligent, but I had no idea of the abuse and trauma he suffered at the hands of his father! I could really relate to his story and when brought up Fight, Flight or Freeze it really hit home for me! I'm actually inclined to agree. A lot of the guys I've seen come back (Or known from the military) and turn to things like suicide, it's not the "Trauma" it's the uselessness. The lack of purpose, so to speak.
Dolph Lundgren has to be the most perfect man... 6 feet 5 tall, super fit and muscular. insanely handsome, incredibly intelligent and also very masculine but at the same time humble and not afraid to show his emotions.
I'd say the perfect height for a man is about 6'2 but no more than 6'5". The heights of many well-known rock-stars, models, actors, and athletes that are considered attractive. Not to mention about 2/3rd s of all CEO's in the Fortune 500 companies are about 6'2 or taller.
Flawed reasoning. It wasn't just his father who made him the man he is today. We all have our own traumas and fears. Lundgren's awakening came from hope, hoping for a better life and with that came the self-discovery. He could've also became an abusive person just like his father or became a drug addict to escape from his pain, but he didn't. So it isn't about what happened, it's about what you make of it.
Ege Pulat He gave this story for money. I don't buy in. Not one person does anything good or bad decision on their own, without the environment forcing them to. His father was a natural sign. It's just that we live in a time where we don't understand signs well enough, yet. We will. It's all environmental nature that works in mysterious ways.
For me, your whole conception of living is corrupt and over dramatically pessimistic. Being self-centred and arrogant is of course a choice but it's never the ultimate truth.
The fiercest guys in the world can be the most gentle ones in the world, I was literally sacred of this guy when I saw him as Ivan Drago in Rocky 4, but here he is, a calm and a wise man about life, it is absolutely amazing.
Emil Westgaard Henriksen IQ doesn’t mean anything when it comes to public speaking. I’ve met some very smart people with 130+ IQ who happened to be the weirdest and most non social people I’ve ever met.

My dad did the same UNTIL I turned 14 and had grown some from weight training with a guy down the road. So 1 of his usual day grumpy and ruthless days he went to swing 1 at me and i grabbed his hand and said hey I’m NOT 5 anymore and in THAT MOMENT with the look on his face i could tell he too had bn hit by his dad so I felt really sorry for him and gave him the biggest hug he had EVER HAD . To this day neither of us has ever brought it up because it’s just something for both of us so HEAL FROM SCOOBS UK.
Dolph Lungren strikes me as a very interesting, articulate, and humble person when it comes to opening up about his past, the ups and downs in his life, and his humanitarian work outside of the film industry. He has more intelligence and integrity than most people care to give him credit for and if more people were as gracious as him the world would be a better place.
Jesus Christ this just spoke volumes to me.... I'm actually in shock over the realness of what he is saying.... I'm living it.... almost in tears.... so powerful

Domestic abuse toughens people.. My dad use to beat me too back in the Philippines as a kid when his drunk or, when i did something wrong.. Till i grew up and learning boxing and grappling from my school coach under my dad's nose.. So i gave my dad a bit of a sweet revenge out in our back yard after all the pain and misery he caused me and my brother over the years of abuse. I actually put my dad to sleep after a quick scuffle.. Woke up the following day all sober with a broken nose and fractured pinky asking for forgiveness..

Brilliant, wow. Here's a man's man. So glad I stumbled on to this. I saw him enter Golds Gym Venice in the Summer of '84, I think it was, when he was training for Rocky. The man absolutely lit up the room with his presence. Now I see he was a true superstar in the making.
So true. Stumbled is the right word and yes it made me immensely happy. You can catch glimpses of that 'little Swedish boy' in his body language, specially at the very end of the talk. Loved it. Thanks to TEDx Talks.
Great talk. In the comments below I can see why 'sadbasturd99' is so called... So much negativity, and so much in need of healing and forgiveness himself.
Add...sadbasturd99 has no clue about steroid use. Nor does he know DL. What made this "sad" guy think DL is using? He's slim. Was never suddenly abnormally huge. Even when he was in Rocky 4 Dolph really wasn't huge. He was 6'4 muscular/lean. If Stallone really thought it was needed he could have asked Dolph to bulk up more. Have him trained by pro bodybuilders or Powerlifters. But they went for the build he had then. Wasn't that vascular even then. So, what drugs he might have use wasn't that much. Likely stopped (if he DID use) after R4...he was never "suddenly massive"...no signs of being on the gear...I thought he could have been bigger for R4. Dolph. On the surface looked like he had it all. Movie part in Rocky 4, dated Grace Jones, was an Euro Karate Champion, spent time in MIT studying chemical engineering (try getting into any professional program in any college...let alone MIT )...then goes on to help (be a part of) people who were victims of human traffic-ing. How many people that went through what he had as a child just end up crashing/burning? He could have gone the other way. Never "come back". Never felt the desire to fight for his life and achieve. Let alone help others.
Now that's a real man there. When all the dust settles he can still be compassionate, caring and has the ability to reach down and pick the crowd up. God bless you.
The second part of that is problematic, you can't change other people, their journey needs to be their own. Though I agree with the concept of dealing with your own issues
you can`t accept what you can`t understand .. love yourself in order to be loved and fight all your life for happy emotions and the rest will be history.
When he started and the audience was all silent you could feel the emotion in that atmosphere. And even with such a sad story somehow he managed to make people laugh. Wow I am simply in awe
I grew up in 80s 90s and i can remember him only as a tough looking actor in violent movies. What I admire about TED is that people can share so many valuable experiences, emotions and stories. This talk took my breath away. I feel rather hopeless these days after all these attacks, info wars, mess on the internet creating mess in our souls but people like him awake the good old me inside me. What a great man, Dolph! Thank you so much for going such a long and painful way. Bravo.Bravo!
Wow. Amazing. Best Ted talk ever. Notice there was no swearing or foul language, just a humble human being embracing his weaknesses and helping us learn how to deal with ours in the process . Top bloke this.
Amazing, you take one look at Dolph and think WOW, he is handsome, obviously intelligent as can be, movie star and he has it all. Then you hear him tell his story and realize how damaged he was. Most people only see the incredible exterior and never realize what is going on inside someone's heart and soul. Beautiful story and so glad he has been able to heal and forgive.
Wow this is absolutely mind-blowing I clicked on this video and I had no idea that Dolph Lundgren had such a rough childhood this is all news to me. Mr Lundgren really seems like a good guy. Some of the nicest people still have internal suffering and struggles.
We don't usually know famous people, we only think we do. All the info about them are mostly gossip & straight up lies made up by tabloids for money. But in reality many of them had a hard childhood and that's what pushed them towards success - famous actors, artists, athletes etc. In the end, we are all human beings with complex stories. At the age of 30, I'm just starting to live, after years of vegetation and suffering from bipolar depression. So glad I clicked on this video. Dolph Lundgren is very articulate, intelligent, charming, with a great sense of humor, he is very good storyteller and I absolutely adore his voice - so soothing ! Remember that it is never too late to bounce back and change your life, as Dolph said. Love & all the best, for all of You, from Poland
20 years down the line, I stood in front of my ex-girlfriend. I had treated her dreadfully in a previous time. Verbally abusive, emotionally abusive, gas-lighting her. I stood in front of her, put my hand out, and I had one thing to say "I'm sorry". That day she gave me the greatest gift a person could ever give another human being - she gave me forgiveness.
bravo Mr.Lundgreen, you' re one of the most person a kind and a feeling of being a human, When i watch your film i can see inside your heart being a gentelman, kind and sweet. i salute you. bless you. and your family. i am really one of the fan of ypurs. See in your coming film.
Of course he does . . . that's *your opinion.* But not everyone does nor can measure up to that particular model. There are other types of strength and manhood not as obvious. Nevertheless every human being has weaknesses no matter how strong they appear to be.
Aylbdr Madison so true. This knowledge is so needed today. So much child abuse in our families everywhere. What a dear man. Thank you sir for sharing this CRUCIAL INFORMATION. Men especially need to hear this so that the stigma is removed from speaking on childhood abuse . Men have such a fear and stigma about revealing this.
I learned a similar thing as years ago I was physically abused by a mother suffering from severe mental illness and she had also been abused by her parents.. It took me a long long time to heal and in the end I looked after her in her last days.. I loved her dearly and learned to forgive.. we may never forget but if you carry around hate.. you own that hate, you have to wear it for ever.. until you have the strength to forgive.. then you realize that is how to love your self fully.. and then you can see clearly and love others
To see vulnerability in a classic tough guy, after a very hard life, is a miracle. Forgive others, forgive yourself. Good stuff. I am on a forgiveness journey now, and have discovered that I need to forgive myself first before I forgive others. Having done some of that, I find that I have less to forgive others for.
Back in the 80's, he did a demonstration in a karate tournament in LA Calif. along with a lot of other celebrities. I was with the school that organized the tournament. I took a pic with Mr Lundgren. He was very kind and approachable. God, I never knew this man I took a picture with, was fighting his demons while I was fighting mine!!
And I always thought Dolph Lundgren was created in a lab somewhere to advance the human race. Great to hear his story, really makes him seem humble (and human).
I suddenly was three yrs old again. This really "hit" home tonight. The family secret. It taught me to always be in survival mode. I don't trust blindly. I forgave a long-time ago & God blessed me with a great compassion and great love for young innocent children. I'm so grateful God led me to watch this tonight. What a great guy...I wouldn't have guessed❤
No matter how handsome / beautiful or famous someone is, we all will experience trauma in our lives. How we handle this trauma affects us and others. Learning to deal with it and turn these negatives into positives is very important. Thanks to Dolph Lundgren for sharing what he went through so it could help others. It has helped me.
Nice talk. He is right . The people in domestic abuse or abusive relationships have this kind of escapism mentality. They never settle, never are happy for long. Always run away form the pain or do not face issues. *Domestic violence is a life long issue.*
You are so wrong, I had an unhappy childhood, I was beaten and mentally abused by my father, I am very happy in life, have everything I could ever need. I have settled and am always the one that tackles things head one, pain hurts if you let it. It all depends on the person and on if that person is going to let the past shape the future. There is always a way, I guess it is a case of different strokes for different folks. I had no idea Dolph had gone through what so many of us go through
I think what could help is letting people know how you made the shift? What helped you heal, gain a good attitude about life again? So many of us feel lost as to how you did this.
No matter what , you need positive feed back at young age, many parents in Asia hit their children once in a while (constant hitting is a problem), lot of them grow up to be good, because if a child understands why parents are doing it, then there is no problem.
It's not escape behaviour he meant to talk about. It's learned helplessness. Actually escaping is preferable to learned helplessness where you lie down and take the beating life gives you.
Dolph is an inspection, I think we forget these “famous people “ suffer as we ordinary little people do, despite their advantages, it’s so lovely to hear his honesty, thank you Dolph x

I too, was abused as a child. The hardest thing to do was to forgive my mother. She never accepted my forgiveness. But my conscience is clear and my life is better.
Jerry, I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with that. I always thought that "forgiveness and healing" is generally good, but you still have to remove yourself from the person if they're habitually like that, right?
I can't even discuss this with my mom. She is in denial and acts like nothing ever happened. The other thing is she has a huge problem with accepting responsibility she likes to shift the blame. I realize trying to get an acknowledgement, or some love and affection I never got, is like going to an empty well for water. I realize my mom probably has some trauma herself and never got help or came to grips with it. I guess the best way to look at it is to understand this and realize that the way I was abused was not personal but a disease passed on by family. She is a victim herself. What I want to do is no longer be angry and do not want to pass on these traits to anyone else. But, there is a deep sadness within me that I never really had a mom and no family really. It all could have been very different.
RegainingLife thanks for your input and advice. I'm sorry to hear about your abuse at the hands of your mom (or if you prefer, at the hands of the disease). Sounds like you're on the way toward healing.
This meant the world to me.I had a nightmare childhood and would have never considered therapy cause I felt the same way about it.Seeing a tough guy role model of mine actually say its ok may change my life. Cant thank you enough Dolph
He’s amazing. He definitely woke something in me. I suffer from ptsd, depression, panic attacks. But never seek help from counseling. He’s absolutely right. It was rooted from my childhood which I don’t talk about and just kept it hidden in me. This is why nothing seems to work. I’ve never dealt with the hurt and traumas from my past. Thank you for the great speech.
Few people on this Earth are as cynical and conceited as me. But that was fantastic. Spoken with integrity, humility and in-effusive passion. Thankyou Mr Lundgren. Again sir, thankyou.
That is one of the strongest things I have ever seen, has brought me to tears, a film star from my childhood, who I can relate to on some levels, being so honest and open. I grew up with "tough love", I was actually more afraid of my mother than my father, I learned more out of fear than respect. But in my later years, I appreciated that a lot of the "disciplining" came more from love than malice. I forgave my parents because I'm sure they where raised with more discipline than they imparted on me, I took care of them both until they both recently passed. I didn't incorporate their methods in my ways but they taught me right from wrong. I miss them terribly and the last remaining years I had with them where full of healing and communication.

I'm actually inclined to agree. A lot of the guys I've seen come back (Or known from the military) and turn to things like suicide, it's not the "Trauma" it's the uselessness. The lack of purpose, so to speak.
Met Dolph in the UK at the end of 2017 and he was a true gent. Grade A guy with no arrogance at all. Couldn't get a better role model. Props Dolph.
Awesome
Dolph always comes across as very genuine, kind and approachable in his interviews. You're a lucky fellow to have met him! 👍😊
Steven Seagal could learn a lot from him lol
@@danw1374 He could learn a lot from most everyone.
Dude this guy is so underrated. As an actor and human being
Dolph Lundgren has to be the most perfect man...
Not to mention about 2/3rd s of all CEO's in the Fortune 500 companies are about 6'2 or taller.
what!!! no. perfect height is 6'2" 220 lbs....unless your a guy. then nvm
Jfkfj h You missed the point. He Is a real man!!! Even if he was on a wheel chair.
maybe part of that has to do with being a swede.
How can he be perfect, he killed Apollo Creed and didn't even care.
What a great guy. We need more people like him on this world!
Emre Özyurt So, we need more of his father then. It was a chain reaction to who he has become.
Yes
He comes across as a really, really nice guy. Respect.
Fiftypence Nice guys finish last.

This is one really STRONG, nice guy. I saw his movies, but I never really knew how brave he was till now.
You mean he was only ACTING as a bad guy??? NO!!!
He Is a very nice man. I had no idea he went through this. He has connect to the universal ideas. I felt that when I met him in Rome
The fiercest guys in the world can be the most gentle ones in the world, I was literally sacred of this guy when I saw him as Ivan Drago in Rocky 4, but here he is, a calm and a wise man about life, it is absolutely amazing.
Ivan Drago doesn't need a boxing match. Ivan Drago needs therapy.
Ivan had only 9 lines in Rocky 4. But he is the most memorable part of it.

Loved this. Buried trauma always bubbles up later in life. That delay in processing is damaging to your mental health. Getting through that requires professional help. It worked for me. God bless this man for his message.
Dolph Lungren strikes me as a very interesting, articulate, and humble person when it comes to opening up about his past, the ups and downs in his life, and his humanitarian work outside of the film industry. He has more intelligence and integrity than most people care to give him credit for and if more people were as gracious as him the world would be a better place.
his IQ is in the 160's
He was once asked "Why do you make all these bad films?"(paraphrasing) - His reply? "When someone offers you $100k for two weeks work......".

Very intelligent analysis : ]
Domestic abuse toughens people.. My dad use to beat me too back in the Philippines as a kid when his drunk or, when i did something wrong.. Till i grew up and learning boxing and grappling from my school coach under my dad's nose.. So i gave my dad a bit of a sweet revenge out in our back yard after all the pain and misery he caused me and my brother over the years of abuse. I actually put my dad to sleep after a quick scuffle.. Woke up the following day all sober with a broken nose and fractured pinky asking for forgiveness..

Yeah, Dolph is truly amazing and inspiring.
Lit up the room with his steroids lol. It still kills me the false hero worship of unfortunate morons.
Dolphin Lundgren has a 160 IQ with a master's degree in chemical engineering and honors from MIT.
You can't change what you can't acknowledge........heal yourself first so you can heal others.
Very well said.
It is a remarkable quote.
Sure is..
The second part of that is problematic, you can't change other people, their journey needs to be their own.
Though I agree with the concept of dealing with your own issues
you can`t accept what you can`t understand .. love yourself in order to be loved and fight all your life for happy emotions and the rest will be history.
I’m a huge Dolph Lundgren fan. But because of this, I respect him so much more. He is quite the role model in this morally corrupt world.
What an amazing man Dolph Lundgren is. So brave to look inside himself and forgive those he hurt and his father. And he still looks incredible.
It's not about forgiving those whom he hurt.. he sought forgiveness from those whom he hurt as well as being able to forgive those who hurt him.
I hope Grace and his ex-partner see this talk
When he started and the audience was all silent you could feel the emotion in that atmosphere. And even with such a sad story somehow he managed to make people laugh. Wow I am simply in awe

Take a good listen: this is what a *strong and courageous man* sounds like.
Dolph is saying some really important stuff here. What I don't understand why you take this moment to throw shade at men.
Interesting how this guy talks about compassion and you're choosing to attack guys who aren't like him, Did you even listen to what he said?
This is how sisy boy sound like. Just kidding. He is great. Full respect
Beautiful... And sooo true.
This is sweet Dolph clearly loved Grace Jones she changed his life.
Chris Howell good for you. However, you are one in a million who believe you're good to go. Are you?

He has the POWER, to heal and forgive.
Graham Harper
So in reality he has the power of She-Ra's, right - instead of He-Man's?
Graham Harper to heal is a great power
I too, was abused as a child. The hardest thing to do was to forgive my mother. She never accepted my forgiveness. But my conscience is clear and my life is better.
My sister verbally abused, humiliated and taunted me, and sometime physically to. I got panic attacks from it at the age of 16.
Jeff K - You have to end the relationship and/or keep a distance with boundaries. You need to remove yourself from that environment and "system".
RegainingLife thanks for your input and advice. I'm sorry to hear about your abuse at the hands of your mom (or if you prefer, at the hands of the disease). Sounds like you're on the way toward healing.

He’s amazing. He definitely woke something in me. I suffer from ptsd, depression, panic attacks. But never seek help from counseling. He’s absolutely right.

I want his son to win in Creed 2.
I can't imagine that a godly figure like Dolph was going through so much pain inside him over all these years.
He is my idol for being so strong and coming out of that dark side like a knight.
Respect
"I vil brak you!"...but then I'll forgive you and put you back together again.
Wow, what an amazing man, much respect for having the courage to change and to tell his story.
I never realized how very intelligent and wise this man is...props.
I’m sure that Dolph’s father, troubled though he may be, is extremely proud of the man and human being that Dolph became. What a thoughtful and well considered perspective he brings to his upbringing. No self pity or groveling for ours. He is a self made man and has a lot to be proud of but is as hunble as can be.
Always though he was so cool in the 80s and did not realize how much he went through awesome speech.
What a wonderful person Mr.Lundgren is
cocospatra Oliver Queen aka Stephen Amell is better
was quite shocking and sad(his childhood) & that this plagued him for 30 years and he only came to terms with it only 3-5 years ago. Glad he has peace now though. Love you Dolph
Oh boy!I never knew his story before this...Sooo sad for that little boy. Salute to you Sir for being so courageous and brave to find forgiveness in your heart..😍
I just love when i see a real person, vulnerable, honest- just real. If you heal yourself, you can heal others;-)
Wow.
Huge respect for Mr. Lundgren. He is the real man.
