TaylorMade golf are not as well know for their wedges as brands like Titleist Vokey or Cleveland Golf but the new TaylorMade MG2 wedge has something different from most other wedges on the market.
The wedges will be used by some of TaylorMade Golf's PGA Tour & European Tour players including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day & Dustin Johnson

Got one of these on clearance about a month back and OMG what a wedge. Perfect amount of spin and control when paired with a decent ball. Find I don't need to carry a 60 deg now which frees up a club. Nice grip standard. I got the 56 low 8deg bounce model and find it very forgiving also as it don't dig into turf. Have already holed out twice for 🦅 from 40 and 60 yards hehe. I have officially been converted from prev only playing vokey. Can't wait to get some rust going on the face.

I’ve always been a fan of the old ATV wedges. They’ve been in my bag for years!! I’ve replaced them with newer ones every year. I’ve not been a fan of the milled grind wedges. Always thought that they were a gimmick. However, I bought a 50, 56 & had a 60 made into a 62. I’ve been using them for a few weeks now and can honestly say that they are the best wedges I’ve ever had. The spin and feel is sublime.

So if the end result is replacing the club in both scenarios i would rather have the one that is keeping spin numbers up throughout its life.

I hear this all the time and I completely disagree. I have had my Vokey SM4 wedges for around 400-500 rounds of golf and I still get ~9k rpm. Maybe I was getting 12-13k spin rate when I first got them, but at this point the spin I generate is almost perfect for amateurs. I have the ability to stop the ball on longer shots and play pitch shots that bite. I will concede that chips and very short pitch shots don't stop as much as they used to, but that isn't something that screams "I need new wedges". New wedges run around $500 for a new set of 3 after shipping, and a fitting will run you an additional $50-100 depending on location. In conclusion most amateurs shouldn't even be conceptualizing on short spinning approach shots because of the difficulty to execute said shots. In the long run it is much more efficient for someone to keep wedges for 2-3 years if not longer so long as their spin rate is where they want it. Invest the ~$500 into a few lessons or a few more rounds with friends rather than new wedges every year that, realistically, don't have a massive impact on your game.

@@breakinggates I'm not talking about wearing all the way down on the grooves till there's nothing left, as yes i agree you may never get there. I'm just talking about till either club gets to a replacement point, which for typical wedges for me is a drop in spin rate more than 3000 rpm ish. So if the rust can make that a longer time period by keeping my spin numbers up by essentially "consuming" the face and re-rusting then it could be a win.

Doesn’t matter what your clubs look like or what they are, as long as you shoot a good score consistently with them and are comfortable, that’s all that really matters.

4:52 I bet peroxide and salt? I've done that before with a rusty club as an experiment to get the rust back to looking even after some scratches on it.

For anyone watching this now and wondering how to rust it super fast, trying using a combination of strong hydrogen peroxide (H202 so oxidises fast) pure vinegar and salt mix or just peroxide alone

I marvel at the spin in the golf world - pun intended. If rust is better - let the wine age prior to sale without the sticker. If I ever have another kid that is a boy, I'm naming him RUSTY because he will be better. :) LOL

You can DIY this to any wedge. Just need to have the face sandblasted. As for the blast media, I would say probably 00 silica sand or maybe brown aluminum oxide, if rust is the only goal. 0 silica leaves a much more pitted profile, which would add to the spin, but likely be illegal. Most industrial blasting and coating companies could do this super cheap if not even free.

What do you think the serviceability of the wedge would be? Rusting would cause the grooves to rust quicker and would need to be replaced quicker. Also for the big factor being rusting and only adding 100rpm do you think it’s even worth it? The inconsistent rusting pattern would cause the ball to react differently if not struck perfectly

Repeated impacts will cause the oxidization layer (rust) to shell off. It may offer a bit more friction, but I really only see this causing the milling to wear off faster.
