I always buy second hand. Currently playing a TM SIM 10.5, with a mint Tour AD shaft. Cost me £250...This was a £700+ club 3 years ago. I love it and have no plans to change. Particularly when I hear all the horror stories about the new Stealth face issues.
On that last point, I would say your point about getting fitted for your new driver & making sure that you're gaming a driver that fits your swing & is setup properly for you can make a big difference in your game if you're coming from a secondhand set or beginner full bag type set. I just got my first proper driver recently--a PXG Gen4 0811XF (on closeout since I'm too cheap to spend $300+ on one club) w/ a ProjectX Cypher shaft in Stiff flex & oversized grips--and it has certainly made a big difference in my game off the tee.
agree with all you said, I've started playing golf again after around a 20 year gap, I got myself a cheap and cheerful Dunlop driver for £26.99 and compared it to my original driver from 20 years ago, the age difference 14 to 34 I know will make a difference in available strength but when I went to the driving range for the first time the difference in the two clubs was only around 20 yards or so getting in the region of 220-230 yards, on that note I did try a friends brand new driver he got on sale for £200 (cant remember the brand) and my first 3 hits was 241, 256 and 271 yards, after the third hit he told me to give it him back lol
I always try to buy clubs 2-3 years old. I bought by irons and driver brand new, but cheaper because they were older. My irons are Mizuno JPX 921 that I bought for $700, and my driver is a Titleist Tsi2 that was only $350 And while I didnt do a full fitting for my driver, the shop I got it at has a simulator and they were very helpful in allowing me to try it and recommending a different stock shaft that worked better for me.
Since you mentioned a used club being out of the warranty period, it's worth noting that some manufacturers guarantee their products for life. I own a set of Ping i20 irons that I bought used (from the Callaway pre-owned site). Three of the irons have lost the weights in the last two years. Despite my not being the original owner, and despite them being 10 years old, Ping repaired them for free, even paying for shipping.
Wow, that's awesome. Nice to hear a company doing what they say they'll do. And it makes me feel better about the new Ping driver I just got fitted for. Lol
@@thecringegolferhere's hoping that works out for me... Just took my E722 driver that has cracked along the top back to the shop... Hoping it'll be a simple replacement 🤞
I had the old titleist 905T in your picture, it's maybe a 15 year old driver. Recently moved to a Taylormade Sim2 Max, decided to get new (300) and not the new stealth 1 or 2 (due to the breakage issjes you mentioned) . I can't believe the difference in forgiveness, absolutely amazing! As you say, no point in upgrading every few years, the technology doesn't change. So I'd recommend getting a new driver that's an older model
I think the biggest thing we NEVER talk about when purchasing new clubs is shafts. I used to be a pretty tidy golfer but after almost 20 years out of the game there is a lot of work to do. I have recently had my first brand agnostic paid fitting. What a mind blowing experience. The amount of data you can get these days is phenomenal. I tried to be as deliberately brand agnostic as possible, but shafts played a massive part in which clubs I felt most comfortable with and have subsequently purchased...But shafts never get talked about!
Great video Pete. I went to get a new hybrid the other day and I did exactly what you mentioned in the video and ended up with a Wilson Dynapower and absolutely love it.
I went from having a callaway razor 2012 bought in 2015 (150 bucks) to a TM M2 2017 w HZRDUS stiff shaft in 2021 (175). love the upgrade and love saving money by shopping smart. Watched one of your videos to get the idea of getting a M2. Thanks for these tips!!
I bought the Wilson Dynapower Carbon ( from Golfbidder ) after your reviews = yes even after you smashed the face in !!! Have to add I bloomin love it !
Just done exactly this...went and bought a brand new Ping G410 on sale for 260 euro .. absolutely smashing it down the middle.. absolutely no need to go for the 425 or 430.... especially with driver I think two models back brand new (not second hand) is the sweet spot
Very truthful, informative and hysterical. Laughing out loud at the guys in the background. Great work! After a year of research and a TM fitting , I ordered the new BRNR mini driver. Arriving soon I hope 😁
I bought a new TM M6 because it was on sale as the Stealth 1 had just been released, also the amount of adjustment on my M1 was driving me crazy and wanted a simpler driver that I didnt keep adjusting every 5 minutes... The M6 doesnt seem to go quite as far as the M1 when hit out of the centre but its more forgiving on off centre hits and feel I hit more fairways which you find is way more important than that extra 15 yards off the tee 1 in every 10 drives especially in competition.
I did exactly the same: I got fitted, but I bought the M6 instead of the new (at the time) Sim: after 3 years (and 3 newest models...) I'm still very happy about it.
my old driver has a bent steel shaft (in two places), two cracks in the head (top and sole) and a loose shaft extension moving around in the grip. a new driver has 100% helped my game
In my opinion if you aren’t loaded or almost a scratch golfer find a second hand club at your local golf stores and save 200-300$ but for irons 1000% get fitted for your swing
Okay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the kislux book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
I tried just what this video is talking about. Last year I bought a previous model cobra driver. Still new, and ordered custom from cobra website. I saved $200. However, with my swing I ended up not gaining any performance. I sold the club and got 90% of my money back. My current driver is a 10+ year old cobra fly z. I did better with that and even when new was not a top of the line driver compared to a new top of the line driver.
The difference in past few years models is theyre fast all the way across the face. If youre hitting it in the middle every time you could use an Original Big Bertha and be fine.
Nice one Lester, as a regular listener and watcher it was fairly obvious how the dynamics worked between you and DH , but at least it’s now clear for all . Looking forward to watching the Golf National vlogs , keep it going and onwards and upwards.
Getting fit for a driver and putter drastically helped my golf scores. Accuracy off the tee went way up and the consistency of my putting was clearly better.
very informative indeed, stop looking at bells and whistles and all the marketing hype for drivers as it never stops. Have a fitting, see what feels best and comes out the most consistent, ego and marketing stays in the car park
Haven't watched the video yet but for me (have only been playing for 2 years) it was eye opening to see how much of a difference the correct shaft can make with your driver.
this shocked me when I got fitted for my Rogue ST Max, the fitting process is worth the money and found a change from stock shaft was reducing the spin by up to 2000rpm and helping me carry further
@@cheemomugdoo799 thought that was obvious, but the shaft can get overlooked by newer golfers - at least that's how it was in my experience. I have never been fitted but have tried a number of drivers off the used market and have found a good fit that way.
@@micahbrown4431 there are several videos on RUclips debunking the myth that the shaft is the main factor when choosing a driver. For most non-professionals a shaft choice can get you a little extra in certain areas but on the whole it’s not going to be dramatic.
Around 97/98 my Lee Trevino persimmon was falling apart. Picked up a used Taylor Made Burner driver, steel shaft and 9.5 loft (great for links golf). Liked it so much bought 3 wood and iron set (new). Still play them today. Most people think the driver is a 3 wood😂
Yes totally agree its all BS you can either play or you can't ! I took up the game in 1971 so you can imagine I have used it all over the years. The older gear is just as good if not better the rest is well bollocks ! One of my favourite sets is a set of RAM supermarket grade clubs I own Callaway Ping and Cobra and Taylormade but the RAMS do exactly the same job🤨😕
I have one kislux bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...
First of all still enjoying the videos. Prices of top end clubs is ridiculous. Back in January, I went and bought an ex-display Callaway Mavrik Max, which I had a fitting with beforehand. It came with a regular flex shaft but during the fitting it was fitted with a stiff flex with a weight that suited my hard transition swing style all done in store before purchase and it’s all good. Couple of scuffs which you expect that from ex-display but got a great driver that suits and has been fitted for under £170. I am guilty of trying to keep the clubs all one brand but after watching a video Pete done a while ago on Inesis, I thought I’d try one, very pleased with it and now have 3 Inesis 500s in the bag. 2 wedges and a hybrid.
I have countless examples of myself and my friends getting second hand clubs replaced. I had ping Replace a used g400 with a small paint bubble with a G425 max. For the most part brands like taylormade and ping have a 2 year warranty so if you are warrantying a club that came out within the last 2 years... they will usually honor that as.... of course the club is under warranty.
Few years back I brought the cobra f8 new upgrading from a second hand ping g25. Cut to 3 weeks ago…. Shaft on my cobra had to be sealed back into the adapter. So had to dust of the ping for a few rounds. Genuinely, it’s still in the bag, and staying. Cobra is up for sale. I’m legit hitting it better, longer than I ever hit the cobra. Finding way more fairways, and having shorter irons in with me shooting 81 for the first time ever last weekend. I don’t know what this means for me and my swing or what to focus on when I do upgrade again but I ain’t letting this g25 go for a while!
I looked on Golf Bidder and depending on the quality of the club the price varies. Cheap one normally doesn't have a great club face. Grips you can change but it's important to have a decent club face.
My son is playing with a 10 year old driver. He can bomb that ball, on the occasions he hits it well. So yeah, most of it is swing. For his irons he did benefit from a new set of jpx 923 hot metals. Now need to get him a new hybrid, the one he has now are almost 20 years old.
Just got a new paradym driver and a brand new 2021 talyormade m4 3 wood. I totally agree that the newest one isn't always worth it, but there is so much tech in the paradym that it is a huge leap forward. For the 3 wood, it is a good club and the price has plummeted since it came out
I'm new to golf, but not really. After my dad recently passed away, I'm golfing again after 5 years of no golf. Doing great with irons in Par 3s. Averageing+10. I feel like I'm ready to hit a driver again. To add to your point, I consider myself a semi pro fly fisherman and an above average league bowler. 190s average bowling 6 games a week, zero practice. That said, I agree. Likewise, a new flyrod or bowling ball isn't going to help without the basics. I feel like I'm finally there with golf. Wish me luck.
Still playing a TM M3(8-9*), adjustability and range time get me where I want. Haven't played as much as I like; but there is a good reason Tiger says it's all feeling in the hands, I've gone from slice to fade to hook based on my grip and have learned a metric ton. I play two iron sets and both are Nike blades, VR pros and Vapor pros; warm weather vs cold. None of these clubs are easy to hit but will make me a better golfer😊
Got fitted for a new Callaway Rogue driver. It’s 45.5 inches long and to long for me but because you hit them further you get sucked. Feels like a waste of money. My old Taylor Mini Driver which I picked up second hand is my weapon of choice
I just bought a 10 year old Cobra BiO Cell. The guy who owned it said they won it in a golf tournament but just stuck to their Taylormade. It looked brand new and I bought it for just $75. I can get every bit of length out of it that I can when I tried a new cobra dark speeds. But for a fraction of the price.
buying the ping 430 lst this year was definitely worth it considering it outperformed every single earlier model, and as a 3 hdc with 115 mph clubhead speed but a high spinrate of over 3k with normal drivers, there is no way i would have bought a later version and felt like i missed out. This driver which i thankfully got over connections at a bargain, i will likely play for the next 10 years
Warranties are better then you suggest in your video. I had success getting a warranty claim on a Sim driver with a cracked face earlier this year even though I submitted a claim telling them it was second hand. And now I have a stealth+ as a replacement.
Yes the color of the kislux is beautiful and it is a great decision, maybe one day they will add feet and straps. It would be nice to have a bigger bag during the colder months when we have to store gloves, beanies, scarves, etc…
I owned a Callaway Warbird set and had to work quite hard to stop the driver slicing. I bought the new AI smoke and have had to unlearn all of that anti-slice stuff. I've gained 25 yards and confidence off the tee - albeit at a price tag.
I've had two driver fittings in the last 5-6 years. My experience was, frankly, not good. Both fittings took place at very reputable club fitters (nation-wide brand name). The first time I was fit for a Callaway. I hit it terrific in the studio. Bought the exact driver and when I got out on the course I couldn't hit it at all. Two years later I got fit at a different club-fitter and was fit for a Taylor Made. Hit it great in the studio. Bought the exact driver. But, again, out on the course? Couldn't find a fairway to save my life. I can't explain it. I'm a 3 handicap so I'm not wildly inconsistent. I ended up buying a used Callaway Mavrik Max and after dialing in the hosel settings and weights, I was able to straighten it out on my own.
Love the content very informative also for getting secondhand clubs custom fit Callaway preowned seems to be a really good deal. I had good luck ordering a older model from them and they lengthened it and put a new grip on it for me for only 16 bucks. Plus it’s nice that it comes with a one year warranty.
I love TaylorMade clubs but was never paying 500 quid for the stealth 2 to fall apart. Paid 200 for the m4 and love it, spend the rest of much needed new wedges so win for me 😂
For a long time, as the price of Chanel increased, I no longer thought I could afford it. I think I'll be happy that I have the kislux as my travel bag that I don't have to take care of. By the way, I'm sure no one will have a hard time telling the difference. Thanks for the comparison.
I was always the I can figure this out by myself guy then i took lessons and started shooting in the 70's from mid-80's. That was playing Callaway S2-H2's and a TM Burner Bubble. As long as you have a decent set of clubs lessons are a better investment I think.
Love my TM SLDR I recently bought almost brand new on ebay, it had never been hit. I usually over draw or hook my drives and this driver has help me straighten that out. That poor guy in your video! 😆
I always wait for the new release of drivers …. Then search one the one before and buy! Currently playing the Cobra LTDX LS driver with radspeed 3 wood and hybrids - will wait a littler longer and get the Ltdx in those to replace them once they drop a little more as I like the matte finish
love love love the "skits" ...more please ...and benefit for you guys i have to watch it twice as hard to focus on what petes saying with the quality acting going on ....love all your work .... time for a staff v finch game for extra holiday time methinks ...also for the umpteenth time i plead with you to release the shotscope video from before the bike ride in the series with fryer i think it was the crails course ? ....just hate missing out on the pure gold content that is fryer and finch :)
I started with Persimmons long ago. Today an old Taylormade R-580xd seems to be enough for me today. I realize most of the time I am the problem! A new driver isn't going to fix old troubles!
The saddest thing is golfers spending 500+ on a driver and using the factory shaft. My new driver set me back a grand, why? Because to get the right shaft it was 300 bucks and the Kith x TaylorMade Stealth Plus was expensive. Would I go back? Maybe to a Paradym lol.
I been gaming the cobra speedzone for 3 seasons now ....wanted the f9 when it came out ....seemed at time it was all over RUclips golfer's bags and it is a great driver ...but by time I had the extra cash to buy I found a really good deal on the speedzone 299.99 ....but since I have had a custom shaft built for me half inch longer than 3 wood and carbon fiber weave etc.etc. ....so now I just buy a driver head that fits this shaft .....just ordered a new ltdx still in plastic wrapper for 212 dollars to my front door .....yes its an older model but i hit one liked it a lot ....so I bought one .....who knows may buy an aerojet next season ....but the days of giving 700 dollars plus for new driver are over for this golfer ....just can't see the reason to spend the extra cash to have the latest and greatest as they say .....
The forgiveness aspect ia what led me to my current driver, a 2016 callaway big bertha fusion... its about the most forgiving club callaway has ever made... it also helped that i found the head for $40 second hand, and had a stiff matrix ozik 7x3 shaft floating around that would fit my swing well... took the gamble and was instantly rewarded with 280yd pretty much every swing, down the middle.... would a newer club give me mor distance? Maybe.... but could it do it dang near every time? Probably not....
I bought a Cobra f9 driver off ebay a few years ago. After a few rounds the head exploded! Sent it back to Cobra and they gave me a brand new head free of charge. Brilliant company!
9:50 - I agree, but I spent 300 dollars on wedges, and in my defense, they were needed. I had only a 54 degree, so a 60 and a 50 were needed for me, as it was extremely hard to get out of deep bunkers with just a 54, and its hard to get a good distance going soft p-wedge.
Agree 100%...you would be much better off spending 200 of coaching before spending 500 on a new driver...alls that is different in the last 10 years is adjustability...the ping G10 is still one of the best drivers out there it just doesn't have a changeable neck or a movable weight but in reality should you be moving weight around at all or improving your swing...time to bin the big companies ramming new clubs down our throats with big price tags and time to start giving your local PGA professional the money they deserve...
The longest driver I ever hit, was a tiny headed metal wood, with a steel shaft : 320 yards carry!!!! It was the original Taylormade burner 10 deg. I've hit many modern drivers, but they all go 275 yards. Maybe it's down to aerodynamics?
Great Video Pete all so true, I recently purchased the Ping G430 with a fitting and the setup helped reduce my fade (Slice) by lowering the spin rate this was mostly achieved by the shaft and change of loft for me, however a golf lesson made me start hitting a draw 🙂
Even if I had to change my clubs to get irons fitted, for the price of a new driver (600€) I took 10h of training courses with a good teacher and went from 25-35 to 13-18. In golf (in life in general) 90% of your problems is you ! As well as the solutions !! I may add that everybody talks of the head of clubs whereas a good shaft, tailored to your needs, is much more important.
Unless you have tons of money or you play in tournaments, you should get a used driver. I love my Aeroburner and it’s tough as nails and has a hot, shallow face, very light and aerodynamic, and it was $94. I not shelling out hundreds more for maybe 10 yards.
Bought the same one last year for €250, it was a demo model of the pro shop. Love that driver. It replaced the Cobra Speedzone which I bought new without a fitting. I hated that driver, awful sound and feel, sliced it every other shot. The Callaway was leaps and bounds better.
Great info as always Pete, but when are we going to see the next Golf Bidder Challenge. Could it be a scramble with Rick , Andy and Matt. That would be epic.
I’ve managed to do a you with my Stealth Driver 🙈🤦🏻 and it’s out of warranty 😢 I don’t think I’d go back to TM. They put wrong shafts in the woods I bought too and took Forever to get them rectified
Very funny, after 2 years of trying I have finally found a workable shaft for my SIM2 and it has been great. TBH is a further hitting driver? Not according to my club GPS tags, my XR16 driver still keeps more distance at 285 yards the SIM2 make 275-280 yards. I personally feel if there zero marketing most PGA conforming hot faced drivers perform well in certain people hands. There is not a magic wand with the purchase. There is a lot to be said too for 1 inch shorter shafts too, control and accuracy wins over 5 yards further every day.

😅
Team - this was hilarious! And educational. Amazing how the golfer was trying to swing like Pete. He’s definitely been watching Swing Quest!
I brought a second hand (but barely used) callaway big Bertha B21 for 150 quid, I call it the big bomber and I absolutely love it!
The mini skits in this vid were class! 😂😂
Best golf channel on RUclips, easily!!
I don't watch any other.
I looked on Golf Bidder and depending on the quality of the club the price varies. Cheap one normally doesn't have a great club face. Grips you can change but it's important to have a decent club face.
Great stuff. Becoming one of my favorite channels on YT.
Next driver might be a M5
Got fitted for a new Callaway Rogue driver. It’s 45.5 inches long and to long for me but because you hit them further you get sucked. Feels like a waste of money. My old Taylor Mini Driver which I picked up second hand is my weapon of choice
My King Cobra F6 Driver has a serious competitor- the Powerbilt 10.5 TPS costs $50.00 and proves a point. 👍
I got the Cobra LTDx in 2022. For me, couldn’t be happier. I finally found out what 2nd shots from the fairway feels like.
buying the ping 430 lst this year was definitely worth it considering it outperformed every single earlier model, and as a 3 hdc with 115 mph clubhead speed but a high spinrate of over 3k with normal drivers, there is no way i would have bought a later version and felt like i missed out. This driver which i thankfully got over connections at a bargain, i will likely play for the next 10 years
You're lucky to get PING at a discount. They don't do much of those 😂
Content just gets better and better, love seeing more of the team taking part.
Just bought a nearly new mint condition Stealth for £180. Buying a driver NEW is a mugs game
Great video! Love the humour and my Cobra F9 is still smashing it. Thanks
so true.... no point spending so much more for the latest driver and paying a premium. I rather invest in good coaches for a better swing.
I started with Persimmons long ago. Today an old Taylormade R-580xd seems to be enough for me today. I realize most of the time I am the problem! A new driver isn't going to fix old troubles!
I’m going to agree with the comments thus far every video is an improvement on the last well done
Great video 👏🏻
The saddest thing is golfers spending 500+ on a driver and using the factory shaft. My new driver set me back a grand, why? Because to get the right shaft it was 300 bucks and the Kith x TaylorMade Stealth Plus was expensive. Would I go back? Maybe to a Paradym lol.
I been gaming the cobra speedzone for 3 seasons now ....wanted the f9 when it came out ....seemed at time it was all over RUclips golfer's bags and it is a great driver ...but by time I had the extra cash to buy I found a really good deal on the speedzone 299.99 ....but since I have had a custom shaft built for me half inch longer than 3 wood and carbon fiber weave etc.etc. ....so now I just buy a driver head that fits this shaft .....just ordered a new ltdx still in plastic wrapper for 212 dollars to my front door .....yes its an older model but i hit one liked it a lot ....so I bought one .....who knows may buy an aerojet next season ....but the days of giving 700 dollars plus for new driver are over for this golfer ....just can't see the reason to spend the extra cash to have the latest and greatest as they say .....
i have a Callaway XR 16 and still put off buying a Newbie as i cannot see any great benefit to change.
Just found your channel love it and totally agree no club is going to magically fix a bad swing.
Absolutely love the content! Never a dull moment with you sir!
Wow this video really helped me as a new person getting into golf appreciate the advice
Im liking the team become more visually involved following up from the podcast 👍
Your videos are getting better and better, informative and fun nonetheless. Keep it up. I celebrate every vid.
Callaway XR 16. A small piece of ledtejp.. and 2 hours practice with a pro, made 40 yards
Great Video Pete all so true, I recently purchased the Ping G430 with a fitting and the setup helped reduce my fade (Slice) by lowering the spin rate this was mostly achieved by the shaft and change of loft for me, however a golf lesson made me start hitting a draw 🙂
What shaft did u get
What swing speed u have
And AOA?
Thanks
Awesome video Pete! Straight up facts are always good.
Great content and love the humorous twist with Jacob in the background. :D:D:D
Exceed brand with fujikura 30 gram shaft and swing weight d3 is the best for me
This was such a good video! Nice job Pete .
I currently use a Taylor made R15 second hand
Even if I had to change my clubs to get irons fitted, for the price of a new driver (600€) I took 10h of training courses with a good teacher and went from 25-35 to 13-18. In golf (in life in general) 90% of your problems is you ! As well as the solutions !! I may add that everybody talks of the head of clubs whereas a good shaft, tailored to your needs, is much more important.
The best golf streamer on RUclips
This seems to be a great driver for everyone. The adjustability and the shorter shaft seems like a great combination
Thanks and Cheers Peter!
Favorite video. The comedy was top notch. And great truth.
Unless you have tons of money or you play in tournaments, you should get a used driver. I love my Aeroburner and it’s tough as nails and has a hot, shallow face, very light and aerodynamic, and it was $94. I not shelling out hundreds more for maybe 10 yards.
Shout out to Mizuno - I have the STG-220 and it’s phenomenal. By far the best driver I’ve ever hit.
The wand chooses the wizard comparison is very good! 👏🏻
I picked up a Callaway epic speed with a hazardous smoke x stiff shaft fitted for $300 new last year, felt good👍
Bought the same one last year for €250, it was a demo model of the pro shop.
David better be getting paid per minute of screen time lately, the man is everywhere!
Which fairway woods are better?Qi V-steel or hi mo, 3-5woods thanks
