Truth be told. I swing fast already with a 2i. 100plus mph. But when i use a driver, and i swing too fast, it doesn't go far and slices or tops the ball. Even with a lean back tee high and hitting up into the ball, i fuck up. So I've avoided using driver til now, and working on tempo and compression on ball.

I can't give this vid all the credit as I've watched a lot of driver vids but it certainly helped. Proper setup. Proper tee height. Proper ball position. Proper swing plane. I spent decades doing all of them just slightly wrong and happy with the result as long the ball found the short grass. But as Chris said, doing it right is free distance and who doesn't like free?
Hi Chris, thank you for this amazing video. My driver data is from Toptracer. Ballspeed 135. Total distance 227. Launch degree 15. Height 79 f. Would you be able to say what I need to do to get more distance ? I am also getting the same distance for 14 Launch degree. .Thank you
This is really sound advice.....I haven't tried the drill but recently made a change to my setup and ball tee height. Having moved the ball forward as you suggest and catching the ball on the upswing has given me 20 more yards of carry. At 63 years of age, I'm carrying around 230 and occasionally with rollout up to 280-300. Not bad for an oldie.
Great stuff I learned you got to make sure you're swinging up and it seemed to help last time I'm going to keep listening to your videos I got to get my game better thank you
ive started concentrating on keeping my head well behind the ball through the swing, by tilting my head slightly so my left eye (i'm right handed) is looking at the back 1/4 of the ball. Tilting my left hip up also helps. It's improved launch angle and contact a lot.
Wow, this makes a lot of sense and explains why my buddy hits the ball further when his club head hits the ground before impact. When the club bounces off the ground it is on the way up at impact.
Great video I like the reference point of where the ball should be in respect to your chest rather than your feet. Makes a lot of sense. I’ve struggled with ball position with the driver
I really like your point about the ball being set forward in the stance based on the center of your chest, as opposed to using the heel. I've put in a ton of work with my driver lately, and everyone always says "take a wide stance and line the ball up with your front heel". The problem is that if you go too wide, it becomes almost impossible to effectively shift the weight forward as your legs will be at too steep of an angle. What ends up happening in this scenario is you make contact with the ball while your weight is still closer to the center of your stance, and the club can't actually reach the ball -- this results in topping it. I think your explanation promotes proper balance which is one of the most important things when it comes to golf (and especially driving). If we aren't properly balanced, we won't be able to effectively shift our weight and that leads to horrible swings.
Great drill Chris ..I now set my driver a little back when I am playing..a ton more distance and down the middle..I have dropped at least 8 strokes ..last game was 76! ..my whole problem was driver ..thank you!
Thank You! Finally made sense (to me) that ball speed can be almost the same yet is distance so dependent on attack angle and dynamic loft. I need to work on my swing path!
This makes a lot of sense..however I think that hitting it straighter on more difficult fairways it may be beneficial to hit lower and shorter..so, good to be able to pull off both shots..thanks for the video!
OMG the tip to start with the driver on the ground further away has helped me tons. By doing so I realized I wasn’t in the correct position. I am now getting 20+ more yards and my attack angle went from about 2 to 5 or 6. Thanks a ton! One thing I am noticing with my swing is I am hitting open more often than not (about 6 degrees on average). Any tips? Ball is for sure in the right spot, and I think my back swing is ok. I am also sure in closed at address. Maybe I’m not turning quickly enough?
This is very helpful. I’am going to the driving range and put this exercise into practice. I am obviously approaching the ball at the wrong angle. Thanks!
Great Tip!!! Never heard path directed this way ..using head cover is beautiful ..but! I really like the club head back a foot or so before swinging.." I can see the difference"
Very good, easy to understand - well done - Making them start the backswing from 2' behind the ball is a clever way of battling the inside takeaway - the #1 cause of slices since the club gets stuck and has no place to return other than outside in (over the top).
Finally I was able to hit up on the driver. Wow it feels great. I used to tee off about 180-200 (carry and not much rolling, too much backspin). With able to hit up, it gone up to like 230-249, with rolling up to 288!
Chris. I will work on improving my "Attack Angle." I have been golfing since 1993 and was successful in getting my "Hsndicap" down to a 10 many years ago. I am now 66 years old, but have maintained good flexibility. I have never been long off the Tee Box averaging 220 yards carry. Thank you.
You have the best driver drills. I like the one hitting over the headcover in front as well. Still working on dialing back my hook but it certainly helped my carry. Thanks!
Thank you Chris. My wife and I used this simple technique this am when practising. My goodness both hit straighter and longer and on the sweet spot. 7 driver holes and 7 good hits. What can you do to correct my irons which let me down…
Chris, I understand everything you're doing and the factors that come into play to enable the ball to travel further. However, when I tee the ball this high, stay behind it on the downswing, and play the ball that far forward in my stance, I am always afraid of topping the ball. What keeps you in this setup from topping the ball by keeping it so far forward in your stance and swinging up on it? I am using 3 ¼" tees for the driver and teeing it up about as high as I can get it!
7 months late but when you swing a driver your body should be moving slightly forward so topping it in this stance means your body isn’t moving properly or you have the wrong shaft. Get fitted!!
Hi Chris, really clear explanation and good drill for the driver. Question, would the high launch and ball flight diminishes any roll out of the ball? Thanks
Sadly I was one of those who drove the ball a long way, but had control issues and irregular height issues. I saw this last night and went out this afternoon and dialed in my control and added 25+ yds. I'll be able to ck for sure this weekend. Simple concept I've missed out on for 35 + yrs.
Great tip. Found you via Danny Maude. This set up with the driver did improve my distance by 50 yards (230 to 280). I didn’t even change my swing speed! Thank you again! Cheers.
The video is great, really insightful and inspiring. Thank you Chris. The phone range tracker app is also interesting and seems useful in range. Could you advise what it’s?
I’ve just come across this video, and how easy it is to correct this fault, I will do as shown later when I’m practicing at the range, Again simplicity is the key Thank you Chris, You tube best instructor, totally Darran
I'm new golfer- 2 months in. I avg around 150-200y. Most slice right. However. I've noticed every once n a while. I hit it soooo far I lose sight of it. In my mind I'm thinking 200+yards (based on flags at driving range). However, I never know how to recreate it. And I'm pretty sure this is it! I'm not swinging any harder. But sometimes it just flysss perfect and straight. This has to be it!
I’ve struggled to get any loft on my driver for the past few months. I’m eager to try this approach tomorrow. At least I’m keeping the ball in the middle of the fairway but I’m definitely hitting down on the ball.
Unfortunately I had to abruptly give up the game of golf completely in the Fall of 2017 due to an injury, but I was a 2 handicap at that time. I really wasn’t an overly long driver. I probably maxed out at about 280 yards and I guess under certain conditions could probably get close to 300. In any event, I never tested this at the time, so I have no idea what my attack angle was. All I have to say is that I wish my course gave me 50 yards of roll. Based on his chart that’s roughly what the fairways were giving if you look at carry distance to total distance.
I understand what you're saying I hopefully I can do it I was doing pretty good last year but man I lost my ability to hit the ball straight at the end of the year can't wait to get out there and give it a try great stuff thank you
Thx man. My Driver has been holding me back and I’m tired of it lol. Haven’t tried drill but I’m optimistic on getting this. My driver hasn’t seen the middle of the club head that often. I’d love to see a strike on the bottom. It’s always on the very top. Horrible.
I usually hit around 240 yards for my drives but one time last year I hit over 280. I couldn't duplicate it though. Now I have something to work with..Thanks...
I have a negative attack angle with a ball speed og between 145/150 and constantly only carry 220/230. This has been the best video I have seen to explain what I have been doing wrong. Hope to get out next week and work on this and see the difference
This is one of the best videos I have seen to figure out why my attack angle was so low. This is the first time it has made any sense. Can you please tell me what program you are using on your phone to get this information?? Thanks
Great info! I've implemented this into my drives and I am stuck at 260 270. I feel like I'm crushing the ball 250 carry but usually goes completely straight no draw at all. Not sure what my next step is
The head cover drill will help a lot. I have struggled with driver distance ever since the larger headed drivers came out and a positive angle of attack is needed. Thanks.
Thank you.Great instruction. I have teed the ball down, strengthened my grip and have kept ball in fairways. But lost 20/30 yards. Cant wait to try this drill amd see if i can keep accuracy and distance
Cheers Chris great video, going to use this next time at the range really need to sort my driving out this winter, cost's me so many shots, I really notice the weakness in my game when playing course's that require me using driver alot.
I can't use a driver at all. So i stopped and now using a driving iron. 17°. Hits it into the wind and penetrating while high and far. 260 for me as I have a fast swing speed. From years of hockey and baseball training. But im gonna try this method definitely at the indoor range. I need to be able to hit 300 plus yards to be able to win holes.
Moe Norman was known for setting club head well behind ball at address, and he was one of straightest hitters of the golf ball. Great tip that probably also works on golf course!
Moe Norman was such a straight ball striker because of the way he aligned his club to target with his wrists locked down in ulnar deviation with face square to target not behind the ball, but on the point on the ground relative to the ball (i.e. about the middle to front of it) where the compressed ball released off face. He also when lining up put his body in the impact position. In other works he aligned everything to target exactly how he wanted everything to be at the moment the ball released off the face. Once that is done you can move the club back behind the ball anywhere because the conscious brain and the subconscious brain both know where the club need to be at the bottom of the swing. By comparison the way golfers are taught to set up at address is insanity for a beginner unless they are also show how to align their club and body to target where both will be as the ball releases. I started doing that when coaching friends with poor swing mechanics this way: 1) Hold the club for them at its nominal loft and shaft angle (as determined by hosel) near middle of ball with face square to target. 2) Have them move body as necessary to move lead arm from side as it hangs naturally (thumb turned inward) and swing it up and onto the grip with arm angled the same as the hosel angles the shaft. Shaft angle at nominal loft dictates where ball winds up relative to feet when they do that. 3) Left hand now on grip I have them bend trail arm 90° and put elbow on body over hip and tell them to put it on the grip. The only way to to that is to side bend, a move most golfer I do this drill with do not know is part of every good ball striker’s swing. 4) When they they manage to do the side bend thing and get right hand on grip I have them turn hips 45° open but keep shoulders parallel because that’s when the hips and shoulders of good ball strikers are to allow the lead arm to fly off the chest toward the target also pulling the lagging club head towards the target. At that point they are in the impact position and for most have a clue and conscious plan where they need to have body and club to hit a powerful shot straight to the intended target for the first time in their golfing exeperience. I have them slowly go in reverse from impact to top of backswing then down again doing the side bend move out of necessity to get back to the impact position seen in photos of the tour pros at the point the ball released off the face. The way the conscious and subconscious brains interact causes the the conscious rehearsal of the move to be executed reflexively when it is repeated, not unlike programming waypoints into a GPS so a plane can fly on auto-pilot. The immediate improvement in swing is always dramatic and smile producing, also producing comments like “It’s that easy? Why didn’t the club pro I took lessons from for ten weeks ever show me this during the first lesson? 😂
@@TeddyCavachon side bend is optimal for a good ball strike. Hip turn. 45° open. Producing that effortless swing and striking pure and accurate. Powerful. Straight to intended target. Been watching Moe, Rahm, and many pros doing the sidebend and it clicked for me. And now my iron shots are so pure,so accurate, so powerful and high off impact that i have taken a stroke off many par 4 and 5s. Especially short par 4, easy birdies. It's that easy. Just not easy every round. As golf can be a hard game.
That casting motion can be due to poor hip rotation on the backswing, which means the arms have no room on the downswing, so the club casts out to in. A good example to see if you do this, is if your left arm chicken wings early after hitting the ball
Greetings from Canada, I just subscribed to your channel even if I watched many of your videos before. Great job giving informations about how to swing the golf clubs .

Think so interesting the kind of advices. I have tried it yesterday, with the expected good result. Straight, long and so much comfortable. Thank you
Glad it helped
Great! As an older golfer this is very good news!
Thank You! Finally made sense (to me) that ball speed can be almost the same yet is distance so dependent on attack angle and dynamic loft. I need to work on my swing path!
Perhaps the most useful video I have ever seen for an older high handicapper like myself. Thanks for the insight.
Thanks so much glad it helped 🙏🏻
Love this tip, I too thought of Mo Norman when I saw you set that head up so far behind the ball. I'll certainly work on this! Thank you!
We can learn so much from
Mo
Gonna do the same. Set up driver behind ball. Can't wait for next season. For now, indoor driving range.
Mo Norman exaggerated!
Thank you! I didn’t understand why my driver distance was inconsistent. This helped a lot.
Very good, easy to understand - well done - Making them start the backswing from 2' behind the ball is a clever way of battling the inside takeaway - the #1 cause of slices since the club gets stuck and has no place to return other than outside in (over the top).
Great video, Helped me no end. Thanks.
Finally I was able to hit up on the driver. Wow it feels great. I used to tee off about 180-200 (carry and not much rolling, too much backspin). With able to hit up, it gone up to like 230-249, with rolling up to 288!
Hung, wow that’s some improvement. I am envious. I can’t wait to see if I can master this drill and do the same.
Thanks!
Yeah that is a really good drill too, helps massively in getting the delivery right
Thanks Chris this is great Just got a Garmin R10 and My attack angle was -3.3 so I will get on this drill
You now have the perfect tool to measure it which is key, a little practice and id be confident you could change that
Thank you Chris.
Thanks
Yep the roll out would be slightly reduced and so the optimal launch angle would depend a little on the ground conditions
Great info regarding attack angle....Im new at this and struggling ( like most) with this game
Sadly I was one of those who drove the ball a long way, but had control issues and irregular height issues. I saw this last night and went out this afternoon and dialed in my control and added 25+ yds. I'll be able to ck for sure this weekend. Simple concept I've missed out on for 35 + yrs.
Fantastic video. Surprisingly, I’ve never seen this particular drill before, but I’m gonna use it today
Great tip. Found you via Danny Maude. This set up with the driver did improve my distance by 50 yards (230 to 280). I didn’t even change my swing speed! Thank you again! Cheers.
Sounds like I owe Danny a beer 😂 Great improvements though, great work
The video is great, really insightful and inspiring. Thank you Chris.
The phone range tracker app is also interesting and seems useful in range. Could you advise what it’s?
I’ve just come across this video, and how easy it is to correct this fault, I will do as shown later when I’m practicing at the range,
Again simplicity is the key
Thank you Chris, You tube best instructor, totally
Darran
You make it look so simple.Thank You great drill Happy Golfing World 🇺🇸
Thank you a lot, this changed my driving and made me happy. My game is back to enjoyment :)
Cheers for the instruction coach. Good carry over my nemesis hole, the 16th on the Arden
Excellent tip, Its exactly what I have been working on, thank you for sharing!
I understand what you're saying I hopefully I can do it I was doing pretty good last year but man I lost my ability to hit the ball straight at the end of the year can't wait to get out there and give it a try great stuff thank you
Greaty video Chris. Just got a new G425 and struggling with attack angle. Always hit driver low now I am going to try and hit it up. A lot! Cheers
Thx man. My
Driver has been holding me back and I’m tired of it lol. Haven’t tried drill but I’m optimistic on getting this. My driver hasn’t seen the middle of the club head that often. I’d love to see a strike on the bottom. It’s always on the very top. Horrible.
This is a great drill . I start my club way behind the ball and have been hitting a lot straighter and further .
Wow.. seeing the numbers like that really puts it in perspective! Thanks!
I usually hit around 240 yards for my drives but one time last year I hit over 280. I couldn't duplicate it though. Now I have something to work with..Thanks...
The great golf, Moe Norman, also had is club head on the ground around 12” behind the ball. Thanks for the tip!
I have a negative attack angle with a ball speed og between 145/150 and constantly only carry 220/230. This has been the best video I have seen to explain what I have been doing wrong. Hope to get out next week and work on this and see the difference
Really hope it helps Kevin
Tried this today at the range unbelievable difference was amazed.
Super video! Thanks Chris. I particularly like starting the driver 2ft behind the ball
Thankyou for sharing this tip with us . I really feel like it will help me tremendously tmr .
Chris, Thank you for this. I am 66 yr old and struggle off the tee. This drill has transformed my tee shots. Brilliant
Thanks James and really glad the video helped
This is one of the best videos I have seen to figure out why my attack angle was so low. This is the first time it has made any sense. Can you please tell me what program you are using on your phone to get this information?? Thanks
Thanks Steven, I was using the TrackMan device and the app on my phone to see the data
Thanks.
Thanks dennis, I’d certainly advise giving that drill a go, really effective
He was super straight!!! lots to learn from Moe
I started doing that when coaching friends with poor swing mechanics this way:
1) Hold the club for them at its nominal loft and shaft angle (as determined by hosel) near middle of ball with face square to target.
@@suryavaraman.4277 Life is a Cabaret, the ideal golf swing is a like a Trebuchet 😂
Fantastic video, great to have a simple drill to try rather than remembering something technical which will be challenging to apply.
That casting motion can be due to poor hip rotation on the backswing, which means the arms have no room on the downswing, so the club casts out to in. A good example to see if you do this, is if your left arm chicken wings early after hitting the ball
Chris, I just made a similar change to my swing and this match's it. But I only went 15 yards longer, but I am pleased with the result. Thanks Chris
Great drill. What would you suggest if we start drop kicking our drives when doing this , actually hitting the ground behind the ball?
Brilliant teaching Chris! Thank you mate. 👌
Thats fabulous info,,cant wait to try it out,,take care Les
Great video, any drills though for helping to create that attack angle but still not get stuck or feel like your weight is hanging on your back leg??
I think path is key, if the club path is a little in to out then you can hit up without having to lean or fall back
Stack and tilt
so good! Concept was very succinct and easy to grasp.
Thanks Randy
Wow great video seems so simple can't wait to try. Thanks
Great tip Christ, head cover guide excellent, great explanation & lesson Thank you
Greetings from Canada, I just subscribed to your channel even if I watched many of your videos before. Great job giving informations about how to swing the golf clubs .
Thanks 🙌
Attack angle for me starts for me with a hip turn and left leg extension at impact. Left shoulder elevated up and back and attack angle shallows out. Seems to work for all clubs without worrying about path. On automatic if you will. At 72 years young, I get confused easily.
I like it.That club starting back reminds me of stories of where moe Norman started his driver.
Exactly like Moe, we can certainly learn a lot from him
Great tip Chris. I literally drag my driver back along the grass on my takeaway, I’ll try your tip next.
My swing to a tee! Have spent hundreds of pounds on lessons trying to stop that out to in steep swing path including this drill. Very frustrating as I lose so much distance and at 62 I'm not sure I'll ever get a more in to out swing!!
What would help with contact low on the face? Is this from hitting too up on the ball? I struggle with topping the driver out of nowhere
Ooof…thanks! As a newer golfer, hitting down on the ball has been my biggest frustration. Have a 1pm tee time today so giving this a try!
Soooo many golfers do, hope this helps
Awesome!!! Can’t wait to try this one👍
Thanks Jon hope it helps
Dear Chris, Congratulations on 300,000 subscribers! Great work! 🏌️♂️🍾😀
Thanks Aart really appreciate that
Excellent video as always.
Great to have more ideas for getting positive attack angle ... thanks CR
Thanks Georgia
Brilliant drill....can’t wait to try👍⛳️
