  • We review the Sony XF90 LED LCD TV (also marketed as the Bravia XF9005 in Europe or X900F in North America) with full-array local dimming (FALD) direct-lit LED backlighting, X1 Extreme processor with future Dolby Vision support, X-Motion Clarity black "zonal" insertion technology, as well as Android 7 Smart TV platform.
The specific model we tested was the 55-inch Sony KD-55XF9005, the 3-pin-plug UK version.

Just got X90F installed at home. I compared it with 27 diffr models from 4 leading brands. Side by side... in 5 diffr showrooms. I can Vouch on this..... it is the best Full Array Local dimming TV after the 8 and 9 series QLED.
Nobody processes color better than sony.
And a true cinematic experience with Vibrant++ colors is assured with this TV.
( not comparing with OLED at all coz OLED is a worldwide scam till the day they give warranty on screen burn in.)

How bad is the reflection on this one? I'm extremely handsome like easily a 10/10 so I don't mind seeing myself occasionally when there's a dark scene but I don't want to be looking at my ugly 7/10 girlfriend so I don't want a TV that acts like a mirror half the time.

Please add PC testing in the future. There are people like me who are going to use this as PC monitor as well as a TV and that 1080p 40ms of input lag is only @ 60hz. On PC you can set to run at it's native 120hz refresh rate and input lag drops by 3 times. Input lag on 1080p 120hz is about 12.9ms. That is actually insane how fast it is. It's actually faster then most TVs currently on the market.

So do I have to be able to get my games to 120hz or do I just have to put windows in 120hz and then I am allways down to 13ms, even when the game runs at 20frames?An update on that info would be much appreciated since I am searching for a TV that I can use as my PC monitor, too. This is crucial since 13ms is amazing and 40ms a reason not to buy it....

I’ve had this TV (900f 75inch)for a little over a month coming from a DLPWD 73842 and I am impressed with the picture every single day however there are some minor things but I kind of read about that is A minus and that is the viewing angle and the glitchy operating system. Hit and miss with the operating system however it’s slowly more reliable. The picture of this TV it’s pretty amazing with great black levels and quite bright with HDR. I miss having my 3-D however some of the images this TV produces almost seems like 3-D. Highly recommend it.

Sony is heavily promoting Dolby Vision as a key feature, so its NOT a “bonus” item. This is why they get away with this bait and switch crap. People keep giving them a free pass. It took them a yr to release a dolby vision patch. When they did it was gimped and didn’t work with HDMI and had the gall to blame hardware manufacturers for not patching THEIR hardware. Now over a yr later they are doing the same crap with this years tvs. Zero reason the 900f shouldn’t have DV out of the box. They need to stop advertising it as a key feature. How this is legal is beyond me and more people don’t get upset about this garbage is beyond me.. Also annoying they still only use 2 proper HDMI ports and as someone who uses subtitles a lot that blooming looked horrible. Great video.

    • @markshkurko

@@markshkurko, I'm hoping that the camera exaggerated it, as it did look pretty awful and I placed an order for the 65" version of the XF90 yesterday for £1399.99 with a 5 year manufacturer warranty from Sony. I still have time to cancel it, but as I say I'm hoping that blooming doesn't look as bad as it did in the video. And for the price, size, and other specs and long warranty, it should be value for money all the same. But yeah, that blooming around the subtitles looks terrible. And the android system, gaahhh!!! Thankfully I intend to use it only as a monitor. Anyway, it was probably either this TV or the 65" version of the Hisense U9A for an extra £300 but with only 1 year warranty I was deliberating between, but again, there's some questionable performance in some areas, or so I've read on critical reviews.

i have the sony 55" 900f, besides sum hiccups in the android OS,( can get slow menus sumtimes, freeze n rare casses(happens to most OS'es these days,..phones computers n now tv's),... it is a great tv. best picture ive seen outside oled, better n sum ways. yes sum blooming and clouding,( i will take that over a grayish screen with dark content), but better than paying 2000$+ for an oled to just get burn in and destroy it, Qled is better n sum ways, worse in others, (not able to turn off content ads on menu was a deal breaker for me on any samsung and many other tv's)(and i hate samsungs menu layouts and remotes). the fact is no tv is perfect and diff models and brands will have upsides n down sides, its all in the one that best suits the buyer. tv buying has become VERY difficult and even stressful these days with maybe to much tech diversity. i do miss the good old days of just deciding was size you want n thats it!

Good to see middle range is improving. In a couple of years from now I'm buying an LCD in the 2-2.5K range (once HDMI 2.1 is fully here and the Dolby/HDR+ bullshit is over) so I'm hoping we'll have really good 4K sets by then.

I really enjoy my X900F display. I purchased the 75 inch version. Coming from a vizio 55 inch p series, all I'm going to say is I'll never invest into a budget tv again! Sony is pricey, but for damn good reason! B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! I don't even know how to calibrate this tv properly, so I'm just using the factory setting right out of the box, and it looks amazing. I've been too lazy into scheduling a professional to come by, mainly because as I stated above about the display being beautifully amazing right out of the box. I strongly recommend this or maybe the 900E display since people bring it up in the comments section. All I'm saying is if Sony's name is on it, then it's worth the pricey dollar tag that comes with it. Id you can't afford to buy it straight out, you should look into your local best buy (if you have one) since they let you pay it off in two years without intrest, provided you qualify for their credit card.

Vincent! Amazing review yet again. Very curious to see if you have an upcoming review for the new LG FALD TVs, either the SK9000 or SK9500.
It’d be interesting to see how they compare to this 900F in terms of peak brightness, FALD zones and to see if the LG A7 processor can get close to the X1 Extreme in an LED/LCD package in terms of video processing.
Both of these TVs are the same price point, and it looks like if LG can overcome the lack of contrast from last year’s TVs the 900 series from Sony might have a serious competitor for value/performance for those of us who might not enjoy black zonal insertion 😅
    Thanks again!!!

First. Review all the 40 inch 4k tvs of the year to find out whats the best. And compare the xf90 vs lg FALD nano cell vs samsung FALD QLED please

Always VIRAL Best 40 inch TV is still 40MU7000 from 2017. Samsung NU7100 does not even come close to it and the LG tvs are IPS tvs which also cannot compare.

So Vincent would recommend buying this ahead of the XE9305. I'm told this is a replacement for the XE9005 so in theory a step down but your review makes it sound very interesting. Thanks.

Another AWESOME review video here Vincent. That was so funny there in the middle for the shag joke and you didnt even crack a smile or change your facial expressions....just kept moving on.. great job, really made be laugh hard! :) Sony does it again. Did hope for a higher # of zones but it seems like its controlled well. Been eyeing this TV for sure.

why won't the reviews talk about OTA viewing. 4k is great but local signals are 1080, Line doubling just increases pixtal sizes. 65" at 10 foot ????????

To me the best tv under 1000€. You can see it clearly live, balanced color, great blacks and direct led makes it more better. Best buy to. So bad you can't get it on 43" format, only best hardware on larger tv, sometimes you have no space for them but you want pay for quality :/

FWIW Vincent the current crop of Sony's can actually accept 4K60 HDR into inputs 1 and 4, albeit capped at 8-bit 4:2:0 as per the 300 MHz bandwidth restriction of those chips. Keep up the very fine work, scatalogical humour included.
