Me and my colleague, both ISF-calibrators aswell, had better results with color accuracy with the Q9 we tested and calibrated the other day. It didn't struggle with the colorchecker at all post calibration. We did come to the same conclusion regarding blooming artefacts and flickering though since the local dimming can't be completely shut off. That's been a problem with Samsung TVs for a while now. We're using the C6 colorimeter for SDR calibration for the record. Great review by the way!
Forgot to mention aswell that the EOTF/gamma-tracking was horrible on the unit we tested aswell. KS9005 and last year's Q9 did struggle with this aswell I'm pretty sure.
This guy knows his shit. I’m staying away from other reviewers. Angle viewing still not good and brightness isn’t everything. Sticking with my OLED... Great Review
Angle viewing matters if you are using the tv at a restaurant/bar where people are going to watch it from unusual angles, but no one is going to use an oled tv as a professional display because of the low brightness and still images that might be shown..
Talking crap matey, I almost stayed away from oled because of people with opinions like yours, now I have a B7 and looks alot better then previous led lcd that I had

My God this channel is slowly turning into a Oled love fest despite all it's fundamental flaws. Those issues Vincent highlighted here can be addressed with firmware updates. This review is a real disservice to how great of a TV the Q9FN is. Shame on Vincent.
gunnyo50 can they though? It's not an oled love fest in the slightest. It's just as a professional calibration expert he's much more interested in accurate colour reproduction and oled is the best technology to display that. Surely he's there to point out the flaws in ALL the technology and did as much with his latest oled review. Peak brightness is just not as important as black level when it comes to accurate pictures. Lcd will never ever be as good because it has inherent flaws in the tech. Oled isn't perfect by any stretch but if you want a good display to watch films then imo there's nothing better.
+Daniel Osborne Once your oled TV gets Image Retention/screen burn in you're screwed. LG and the other oled manufacturers don't cover that in their warranties at all. Q9FN have issues but those are fixable via firmware updates unlike the Oleds.
gunnyo50 you don't know that q9f problems can be fixed by firmware. Samsung aren't aware of these issues anyway! There's a reason why the Sony ZD9 cost so much money folks. ( has more zones than any LED television out there..no contest) It is an absolute beast of a television, rivaling the master panels that Hollywood studios use for video editing

Most motion problems are mainly in the panel of 65Z9D, whereas the 75Z9D as well as 100Z9D is in another class of it's own (they may as well be different tvs or the "true" Z9D).
IIRC the 75Z9D from an owner on AVSforums was able to get up to 2088 nits (~2100, and slightly better color volume), and the 75Z9D has much better motion than the 65Z9D.

The Q9FN is a bit disappointing.. I wouldn't have expected it to have such poor color and picture accuracy for the company's flagship LED. You would think that Samsung would calibrate the TV for you since it is already $3,800. Oh well, my hopes were on next year's HDMI 2.1 TVs anyway.
Ethan Stading color accuracy has always been one of Samsung's biggest problems (the other being motion handling) .. it's funny to see them go the opposite direction tho.. their motion processing is still rough on the q9fn too.. I feel sorry for the customers who buy this flagship and don't adjust it... It looks god awful in stores on anything but their 60p demo videos
You need to completely re due this review Vincent! Especially after the recent update! As a professional calibrator I've been working with RC Willey since 2008 the star Crush or Black Crush was a bug in the firmware and is now fixed. This TV is the best LED panel to date. Yes better than my Z9D. I am truly impressed as Im actually thinking about getting one lol.
So glad you are hyper- critical. This tv is now off my list for my very dark video room. Hopefully the Sony 8FN review is coming soon and eventually you do an LG C8 vs Sony 8FN comparison review. thanks for your brilliant honesty
I dont think you can last much longer. Love it Vincent . Great review as always and ty for calling out those other calibraters on the tube. Thumbs up to you and shame on those guys.
My Gadget Reviews well, LG, Panasonic and Philips might have something to say about that! Hisense are on the move too but are probably a couple of years off the pace yet.
C Anderson Do you not understand how serious the issues are with the Samsung Q9FN?......For a Premium priced TV, it should perform much better than it does. It isn't the best LED TV, the Sony Z9D is the best for watching movies, the Samsung performs well for gaming, simple as that. However this TV has serious negatives in my opinion- Local dimming that can't be turned off thus causing black crush - Failure to adhere to the EOTF curve - Less than optimal calibration output in SDR and HDR - Flickering backlight
I was convinced this was the set I was going to buy this year, but that scene in Gravity where it wasn't displaying a lot of the stars was really bad. I may have to rethink this....
Vincent :) congrats and thanks this was putting things in order regarding overhyped q9fn its not match for Z9D and not for 2017 oleds , nor at all for 2018 :) have a nice day. keep up splendid work man. take care ;)
Dead Pan................ Thank You Vincent! It's a real professional review that even for a new consumer looking to buy a new TV gives an real understanding of the pro's and con's of each product. I feel a lot more confident ordering my next TV with your recommendation!
Avf was a review sample from samsung so probably will differ. Even vincent said he's had OLED review sample and have been different from retail unit panels
RXP91 Steve just gave his review. I don't really know what went on with all of the fallout from this review but I've been a long time avforums follower and value Steve's reviews just as much Vincent's. I trust their reviews over reviewers like flatpanels and Rtings. Steve giving the tv a reference status is not something j find hard to accept like a lot of people seem too. I know Vincent was a bit critical of some things he feels other reviews didn't make as big a deal as he thought they should have, but he wasn't degrading them or their reviews in any way. I found that has come from people like yourselves on forums like this.
One other interesting fact is calibration seems to get different results for people. Rtings measured higher 10 percent peak brightness for the Samsung and Vincent went in the opposite direction when compared with the z9d. If every reviewer is going to get different results, than it’s better to take these reviews with a grain of salt in some ways
I would like to see the Q9FN vs the 930e if you can please. That should be interesting even though they are two different classes. I though the Q9FN would put up a better fight against a 2 year old tv.
Old Gregg Is that your idea of a rebuttal?.. If so you forgot to respond to all of the points outlined in my last post: 1. The EOTF chart that Vincent attributes to RTINGS in his video doesn't match the chart that appears on their website under the Q9FN review. 2. Most TVs don't match reference measurements with 100% accuracy (this includes the other Television sets Vincent used as a point of comparison in the same video) and yet it somehow is only a HUGE issue when it comes to the Q9FN. 3. Other top review sites did mention the Q9FN's EOTF inaccuracy issue they just didn't underline it as a HUGE issue (as Vincent did) because according to them after calibration they were able to get the Q9FN's metrics to acceptable perimeters. Furthermore: I never said that Vincent NEVER mentions OLED flaws, I said that he "fails to highlight OLED shortcomings as a HUGE issue"...reading comprehension is key. If you aren't a mindless cult follower as you claim and you digest information from other review sites without bias how is it that you missed the information and commentary expressed by other review sites in regards to the Q9FN's EOTF curve tracking and why it isn't a HUGE deal post calibration, and the fact that other current top-tier 4K sets cannot achieve 100% EOTF reference tracking either? Also I never removed my previous comment so what are you even talking about??? And the fact that you need me to post a link when you can simple go to RTINGS' website and view their Q9FN review yourself (including their Q9FN EOTF graph and the included commentary) says a lot about your claim that you don't completely rely on HDTV TEST, you actively check out other sources.
Old Gregg Maybe you should go to their website genius and read their Q9FN review, that's where you'll find their EOTF chart and other metrics (you may want to get permission from Vincent first). I even linked it for you twice and you still couldn't manage to find your way there. Hilarious!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for doing this review, Vincent! I have an XBR-65Z9D, and have been looking at going to a 75 incher. Because of the glowing reviews I had read, I had been seriously considering the QN75Q9FN, even though I’m not a big fan of the One Connect Box (more for wall mount people). I will definitely be going with the XBR-75Z9D, now. Your RUclips channel is truly the one source for this degree of info. Thanks again, Vincent!
The way you talk is so much a gift that jokes just feelsgoodman Nice video lad... No I'll just get a Q9F as opposed to the LG OLED since I'll obviously be gaming on weekends
As an LG B7 owner who is mainly gaming on it and watches movies or shows (no regular TV programme) i'd welcome of course a brighter TV, but the downsides shown in this video are too much for me. I'd go crazy if the black bars in movies go slightly grey, i can not stand blooming in general. So i will stay with OLED for the time being. Picture accuracy is more valuable to me than brightness.
i dont dispute that the black levels are superb for an LED LCD, thats also what Vincent says. i talk about the other areas he mentioned. i myself saw a demo on that 'telly' (vincent lingo lol) at a retailer, a demo that you normally see on oleds because it had an all black background with stuff moving around. and yes, it looked almost oled like i admit. but the downsides mentioned here would keep me from paying max dollars for it. got the 55" B7 summer 2017 for 1700€ and never looked back since :)
Every TV has drawbacks. I feel like these downsides have been highlighted too much. I upgraded from a KS8000 and was going to buy an OLED, but I really just waited for this TV to see what it was all about. I put the C7 and Q9FN together and it couldn't be more of a difference. The OLED is beautiful, but it is a little blue and not very bright. Black levels are my main thing, so going from edgelit to Q9fn FALD was an upgrade of the ages. If you play video games or want to use this as a monitor, it is 100% awesome. There is some blooming for loading logos and some dark crush, but overall an amazing experience.
The fact is reviewers are well versed in hdr and sdr criticism. And when a reviewer such as John archer states he believes the Q9fn outperforms the z9d , it’s just his subjective opinion. Rtings gave the Q9fn a slightly better hdr score as well. It’s just opinions
Disappointed in Samsung. Was really excited to see them go FALD with the Q series this year, but it seems they need to take some notes from Sony. Also, I forgot, no Dolby Vision, smh.
Thanks for this indepth review Vincent ! If I may ask, would you have any info about a possible successor for the Sony ZD9 coming this year? This TV stands as a real compromise between a good contrast ratio and peak luminance. If Sony succeeds in pushing even further the capacities of a potential "ZF9", I could consider looking away from OLED. 🤔
jrzez actually it is. I was able to compare q9fn and z9d side by side in store and my attention constantly shifted to the q9fn. Its just more attractive and stunning. Accuracy seems to be another story.
That's precisely the issue Vincent mentions in the video. I just hope other brands (specially Sony since that's going to be my next TV) don't follow in their footsteps or it's going to be a mess.
I seen this in person as well. Not blown by it. Maybe because I have a OLED. Yes Q9 is brighter, I prefer the better contrast, no dirty screen, wide viewing angles etc. on OLED.
therider04 i love the oleds contrast too but when i see those blue tinted whites, vertical banding(that may also be present on q9) and image retention, it doesnt make me happy. There are pros and cons to both sets. Oleds over 70inches are about 3k more expensive than the q9. Thats my deciding factor.
I have a 75q9fn, It has a great contrast, if I buy a 75q950ts I will get the same/better contrast inky blacks, or the 75q950ts will be poorer than my current 75q9fn in contrast and inky blacks?
I'm sorry to say people.. I've been calibrating TVs since 2008. I own the 65"Z9D and the 65" Q9. Simply put the Q9 is Better!! Especially after Calibrating both and putting them side by side.
He picks out every fault with Q9 after it got awards from other review sites. But he was not that over critical with Sony ZD9 and did not mention that Q9 has the least light bleed on any LCD TV on the market. But I like to see more comparison between ZD9 vs Q9. He is doing a good job but needs to be have more comparisons.
Thanks Vincent for that thorough review! Do you think you could review the Asus and Acer HDR PC monitor when they'll come out? I'd like your professional opinion if they can make good alternative TV for watching movies.
Dude, I don't own either TV, but I have friends that do, and when your finished with all your nerdy jargon, as a consumer trying to watch the clearest looking stuff on a TV, I have to say, the Samsung Qled Tv looks "crisper", regardless of what the algorithms are doing buddy, it just looks nicer and cleaner and crisper. More pleasing to my ....eyes... lol
Thank you for this great review...I'm not shelling out $4000 for a LED TV with these picture quality issues. Might as well buy a cheaper LED model UNTIL Oled technology is perfected reducing burn in issues, increasing brightness for daytime viewing and improved panel longevity.....OR wait until Micro-LED technology is available which promises to be the best TV technology ever.
I respect and subscribe to Vincent and love his reviews. But, I don’t know. He’s diving really deep into areas, outside of a trained calibration eye, aren’t going to be noticed or concerned. And to be fair, all the reviews from print to RUclips have generally praised the Q9fn as the best lcd. You can’t knock these reviewers as amateurs as one who gave it the reference standard award is a professional calibrater and has been reviewing for years and reviewed also the z9d. In the end, it’s just a subjective choice what one would like. If the aim of lcd is to get as close to oled in terms of black and little to no blooming or bleed, than you can’t fault Samsung for the direction they went. I think that’s what some reviewers considered when looking at the tv
The biggest draw to this TV is the remote connections. Mounting it over my fireplace cables have always been a nightmare, otherwise I’d go with OLED. Thanks for the great review.
If anyone on here thinks Vincent was by any means having a dig at other reviewers then you are dead wrong. I have found that it's more the followers that have made a big deal of this. "My reviewer is better than yours" type followers. Read the whole Avforums review on their site. I don't really find a problem with Steve giving the t.v. a reference status, Vincent just felt there where issues that were missed or just ignored, none of which I feel was the case. (At least in why he gave it that status, also vincent said himself he was nitpicking). In my opinion both Steve and Vincent are the people I go to first when I look for tv reviews, and Nothing has changed. Respect differences of opinions.
Good on you for shaming that ridiculous avf review. Shame on them for deleting posts by members relating to the bug that you and more professional reviews have highlighted. Nice one.
I think I would prefer a cheaper screen with the same basic LCD panel, but without any local dimming backlight. These panels have very good native contrast
I’ve actually had both TV’s mounted in my living room. I ended up choosing the Q9FN. It is a much better TV for me. The Android OS on the Sony is horrible and it did not play nicely with my Apple TV. Samsung’s OS is much more user friendly and it’s not laggy and glitchy like the Android OS. Not being able to turn off the dimming zones on the Samsung is not needed for me. The dimming zones are flawless. I’m not a bias reviewer. I own many Sony products. The overall picture quality of the Q9FN was much better for me.
AJ Tautolo well u Kno.. Samsung never really invented anything..they just buy technology from other companies~ and claims it's theirs.. typical Samsung.

A $2,200 TV selling for $3,800.
I can tell you that in real life the Q9FN blows the Z9D straight outta the water. I don't agree with this review.
The Sony Z9D Rocks, and it has 3D!! Can't be beat!!
SaporousMaximus can you give me some good sources on the new firmware updates? I want to know where to go to get information on my Q9FN!
So glad you are hyper- critical. This tv is now off my list for my very dark video room. Hopefully the Sony 8FN review is coming soon and eventually you do an LG C8 vs Sony 8FN comparison review. thanks for your brilliant honesty
Great review Vincent, thankyou for telling it like it is and pointing out other review inaccuracies, most enlightening
I dont think you can last much longer. Love it Vincent . Great review as always and ty for calling out those other calibraters on the tube. Thumbs up to you and shame on those guys.
Quantum coming in with his dislike lol
uutuber431 I own a 900e and I hate the fucking guy. I know it's shortcomings lol
Ich Du Because his dislike of HDTV test and Rtings comes from claiming they are bought and liars.
The American Soccer Guy don't get me started on quantum, arrogant and can't take any criticism whatsoever.plus he likes to review TVs he doesn't own.
Ich Du Not at all. Do you know if he wants to attack the big guys fine but don't do it and then give garbage settings to everyone else
uutuber431 well he’s now on the Sony OLED train 😂😂
2016 vs 2018 and the Sony still kicks ass!
Can't wait to see their Z9D/ZD9 successor.
Shane Mc Grath The successor could hopefully be a brighter oled tv with burn in protection.
Z9D better than the successor 😂 incredible really.
so uniformity sucks, color sucks, HDR sucks, Dimming zones suck.. wow samsung.. great job!
And i absolutly dislike this ugly stand.
Even the XF90 stand looks better than this pull-up bar. XD
My Gadget Reviews this is true
My Gadget Reviews well, LG, Panasonic and Philips might have something to say about that! Hisense are on the move too but are probably a couple of years off the pace yet.
Best Gaming TV, VRR, Lowest Input Lag, Best LED TV, ALL, 120Hz, No burn in, have fun crying when your precious OLED starts burning in.
Yeah i in the same state :/
Well.. 2018 Samsung flagship still failing to surpass a 2016 model Sony.. surprise surprise
The color accuracy results are way worse than my 2011 Samsung plasma. It's a shame because the TV looks good on paper.
Not true! Q9 is a remarkable TV
@@damienpol5215 I'll take my 64" F8500 over this tv. My X900E Sony is better too
@@Nate_4545 so true 😁🤣😅
Thank you for this unique review Vincent! Your reviews are highly appreciated!!
Vincent :) congrats and thanks this was putting things in order regarding overhyped q9fn its not match for Z9D and not for 2017 oleds , nor at all for 2018 :) have a nice day. keep up splendid work man. take care ;)
It appears the 2 year old Z9D is still a great set. I’d like to see a three way test of the Q9FN Vs Z9D Vs Panasonic DX900. That would be awesome.
The Z9D is better than the Q9FN
Your attention to detail is amazing and again a very informative review.
Thank you for saving me from buying this tv. All those issues you brought up are all the reasons i switched to Sony.
ATH3X G but Sony don't last long....lol
oh well, enjoy your blooming!
Dead Pan................
Thank You Vincent! It's a real professional review that even for a new consumer
looking to buy a new TV gives an real understanding of the pro's and con's of each product.
I feel a lot more confident ordering my next TV with your recommendation!
Avforums review must have been paid for by Samsung!
Avf was a review sample from samsung so probably will differ. Even vincent said he's had OLED review sample and have been different from retail unit panels
Well, expect avf stickers on the box on the Samsung website and on adverts. Make of that what you will.
Of course it's marketing
RXP91 Steve just gave his review. I don't really know what went on with all of the fallout from this review but I've been a long time avforums follower and value Steve's reviews just as much Vincent's. I trust their reviews over reviewers like flatpanels and Rtings. Steve giving the tv a reference status is not something j find hard to accept like a lot of people seem too. I know Vincent was a bit critical of some things he feels other reviews didn't make as big a deal as he thought they should have, but he wasn't degrading them or their reviews in any way. I found that has come from people like yourselves on forums like this.
@Si Si I love there products but good luck if you need support, the worst by far
Great job once again VT. Gosh that EOTF!!!! ,like you said, the rest of the guys just missed it.
You're a fantastic reviewer mate. I learn so much from you
I would like to see the Q9FN vs the 930e if you can please. That should be interesting even though they are two different classes. I though the Q9FN would put up a better fight against a 2 year old tv.
The input lag on the Q9FN is amazing compared to the XE930 that's only really good in 1080p@120Hz and pretty bad elsewhere.
Lurreable The 930 as 24ms you wouldn't be able to tell any difference.
Honestly I have not seen much if not any difference in input lag with my 930e.
Vincent posted an updated on Twitter/Instagram, looks like he found a way to get the Eotf curve to track properly, and not bleach out skin tones.
ray h Maybe he should have discovered this before posting his review.
Perhaps he should've asked his peers for calibration pointers before falsely calling them out and bashing this panel.🤔
Old Gregg the panel and hardware is better than the Z9D, but it's the software that's dragging it down.
Old Gregg Is that your idea of a rebuttal?.. If so you forgot to respond to all of the points outlined in my last post:
Hilarious!
Great review as always Vincent. I was eagerly awaiting the HDTV comments on this TV but it looks like I’ll be going for the Z9D now. Thanks mate 👍
As usual, thank you Vincent for the most useful and interesting reviews you put out compared to the competition. Great work!
Z9 is pretty much the best TV on the planet.
Not! Lg oled
My Reviews and now is f9
caesar fizer different
with the af8
Nah id rather take the Q9 hands down!!!
Vincent you are the best!! Pure unbiased reviews!! Luv ya!!
The way you talk is so much a gift that jokes just feelsgoodman
Nice video lad... No I'll just get a Q9F as opposed to the LG OLED since I'll obviously be gaming on weekends
Damn Vincent your quips are so quick your audience listen with keen ears for those punch lines😂,respect my guy 👊🏽
Sony is still the best when it comes to picture quality
Excellent review!!! as always :)
just got this tv for $2100 on ebay brand new. It's amazing, and best of all, no burn-in worries!
I can tell you from experience that with the correct settings, the black levels are boss on the Q9FN.
Kazymedic Fire that boss.
i dont dispute that the black levels are superb for an LED LCD, thats also what Vincent says. i talk about the other areas he mentioned.
i myself saw a demo on that 'telly' (vincent lingo lol) at a retailer, a demo that you normally see on oleds because it had an all black background with stuff moving around. and yes, it looked almost oled like i admit. but the downsides mentioned here would keep me from paying max dollars for it. got the 55" B7 summer 2017 for 1700€ and never looked back since :)
Wow! Congrats for a very detailed review. I really love that chase to detail review you do XD.
Another solidly produced video. Thanks Vincent
Fantastic review! Appreciate the honesty regarding the increased brightness on the Samsung.
I just bought the z9d last week. ☺
Divontay Swing post videos
Do the Q9 vs. OLED LG C8 please Vincent! I'm very intrigued to know what you think is better.
Walter White I second this though it is quite clear from watching both videos Vincent would prefer the LG.
Seen this TV in person, it's truly stunning!
Nope. It's not. Sorry.
jrzez actually it is.
Still..Z9D
Xtian lol
Xtian again, why are the z9d reviews so awful
Dennis Finan those are haters..i guess
That shitty operating software though. 😣
vTANKv i can deal with the software but the picture quality of the z9d is Superb! and its a 3D tv boooyah!
I have a 75q9fn, It has a great contrast, if I buy a 75q950ts I will get the same/better contrast inky blacks, or the 75q950ts will be poorer than my current 75q9fn in contrast and inky blacks?
You gotta love those "Teohisms" keep em coming...
Amitav Raja it’s so good at least amount of light bleed that you lose detail in shadow areas. Congrats, 🎊🤣
More pleasing to my ....eyes... lol
thatwonguy trash
Thank you for this great review...I'm not shelling out $4000 for a LED TV with these picture quality issues. Might as well buy a cheaper LED model UNTIL Oled technology is perfected reducing burn in issues, increasing brightness for daytime viewing and improved panel longevity.....OR wait until Micro-LED technology is available which promises to be the best TV technology ever.
Vincent is the best TV reviewer on RUclips
Fantastic review, didn't mind the review at all, it could even had been longer! :)
"This is not TV, this SONY..!" Sony the King.
Great review, well done Vincent.
His so enthusiastic. Full of energy....
Honest and deep review as always!
fantastic review ...still not so sure that OLED will have burn in if used as monitor for htpc etc.?
Good on you for shaming that ridiculous avf review. Shame on them for deleting posts by members relating to the bug that you and more professional reviews have highlighted. Nice one.
What is still the best TV? Wanna get on for my 4K gaming and videos
Theo, the video was very good!! Congratulations
Which tv is better for watching soccer games? The Samsung Q9FN or the LG C8 ?
Does the 55inch version of this TV have the same amount of dimming zones?
Fantastic review very well done hats off to you.
They basically tried to copy the z9D
AJ Tautolo well u Kno.. Samsung never really invented anything..they just buy technology from other companies~ and claims it's theirs.. typical Samsung.
Thank you for the great review. Covers absolutely everything.
I subscribed just for that joke ! But seriously great in-depth review
I tested the new q9 and recognized the aggressively low local dimming brightness.
It looks way better compared to the q92017 though
Trump joke checks out. Liked
Amazing a TV built in 2015 is still king 🤴 Z9D
Michael Justa .......of LCDs. 😉
Vincent GREAT REVIEW MY FRIEND!!
