Came for the review stayed for Vincent. Guy is amazing! I watched the whole 27:00 minutes without getting bored once. Awesome breakdown of everything although I understood half of what he said!
Hi, Nice and honest reviews. What if you make a series of recommendations based on price ranges? that will also help buyers. Thanks for such great videos.
Thanks so much, Vincent, I’ve been waiting for this review since the unboxing! 27 minutes was just fine. Now, I think its time for an AF9/A9F vs C8 comparison!
AF9 in not in the same category of C8, is much better than LG. I think you should ask for a comparison with E8. So far, for my opinion, AF9 fights with Panasonic 950/800 for the best OLED.
Dr.Chrisu I mean - there is no picture quality difference between the C8 and the E8 so I don’t think the comparison would yield different results there. As for the Panasonic, remember that it is not widely available outside the UK and is entirely unavailable in the US market. Plus - it lacks Dolby Vision! So as a comparison, I don’t think there’s anything else to compare the AF9 to than any LG.
Doctor - Picture quality of C8 and above are all identical actually. They all have the Alpha9 processor, the only differences between C, E, W, etc are the sound and case.
@@mrtickleuk I am not agree about the same picture quality, but it's my opinion. And moreover, LG OLED C8 55' costs 1400e and Sony AF9 3100, do you think it's only because Sony is more expensive? I've talked with more than 1 tv sellers and I got the same answers: Sony is better under many points of views. If the 2 tv's were so similar, there would e 1700 euros of difference. I don't think so.
I love your videos they are hones you don't seem to favour one brand and put in beyond others and in total your productions are very educational. Great job with explaining everything step by step instead of just carelessly throwing info at people who might not understand how thing work in their TVs . Thank you !
Great review. I was a little worried about the stand but after 2 weeks of use I’m convinced that tilted stands are an improvement. Slightly tilting the screen makes it so you’ll never see your own reflection at the right distance. With regular stands and wallmounting you’ll need a good anti reflective coating, but even a coating will never fully remove your reflection. A tilted stand is the only way to not see your own reflection while having the screen straight in front of you. Once you notice that detail it makes all the difference.
I agree. Also it's easier to calibrate for those of us without super-expensive meters, because it hangs down and makes much better contact with the screen rather than swinging away from it!
Yup you can. But before mounting it on the wall, make sure to have all cables plugged in whether you have the devices or not coz the back panel would be inaccessible.
Another great in depth and most informative review! Yes you nailed it Vince! Glad to hear Sony has improved things with the AF9 from previous models, especially with less aggressive ABL and dynamic tone mapping. What a year its been with 2018 OLED TVs from LG, Sony, Panasonic and Philips. I'm surprised to hear Philips has the most impact on HDR performance and with one of the best motion compared to other OLEDs, as mentioned on the HDTVTest Philips 803 review. I yet need to see the new Philips TV in person. Vincent, although the HDTVTest 2018 shootout has already been done, I can't help feeling if only the new Sony AF9 and Philips 803/903 were released in time along with the LG C8 and Panasonic FZ802/FZ952 then the result for the 2018 TV of the year would have been much more interesting! Can there be an update on comparing these OLED tvs side by side in terms of picture quality? Can you state which you think maybe closest to the Sony reference bvm-x300 monitor? Any opinions on which you feel would come up on top as you've now reviewed all these TVs, would Panasonic still be King/Winner of 2018 OLEDs especially with the addition of new 2018 Phillips and Sony OLED TVs? Your feedback would be much appreciated and maybe you can do a video based on update with these new TVs included.
"You can get a better HDR experience... sending HDR10 video signal to the TV" I never thought I would hear anything remotely like that spoken by anyone, let alone Vince. It's amazing what TV manufacturers can produce with processing engines now. Pretty soon your old VHS tapes will be AI upscaled and HDR tone mapped to look as good as a UHD Bluray.
Sony has always been doing "AI-Upscaling" with Reality-Creation and "AI-tonemapping/upscaling" of HDR with Xtended-Dynamic Range/Object-based HDR Remastering, hence the whole marketing of TV Processors/ASICs (like X-Reality Pro,X1,X1-4KHDR,X1-Extreme,X1-Ultimate)
@HDTVTest hey buddy love the content. That demo loop that you have on the A9 with glass creation is a negative for OLED. It creates Burn in super fast on oled that’s why we removed it from our built in demo. As always thank you for your support and reviewing out sets
I have a Sony AF9 55 4K Oled. I absolutely love it. I've played around with the various picture settings and for me I've finally come to the conclusion that, I do not like Netflix calibration setting at all as it seems to me to be too dull? , and the very best setting I use for everything is the factory set Custom with just 2 changes, I turn off motion flow and turn off film mode. Its my favorite for everything plus when Netflix show a film in dolby vision atmos the setting automatically goes to dolby bright which is absolutely superb too
Thanks for the usual excellent review. Upscaling and motion are most important to me because the some other elements can be adjusted to mimic other brands. I'm leaning toward the Sony OLED as soon as they come out without the lean back.
Great review! I've had this TV for a little over two months now after switching from an LG OLED. I felt the picture on that TV was just too bright and artifical for my taste. I have to say though I'm still in awe of how incredible the picture on this Sony panel is. The blacks are the deepest I've ever seen. It seriously looks like that part of the TV is completely off during a dark or nighttime scene. I watched Expendables in 4K the first night I got it and felt like I was in the cinema again. The Netflix calibration is also excellent and you can see and hear exactly what the director intended, especially with content that supports Dolby Vision. I couldn't be happier with this TV, and I can't wait to see what Sony does next for their 8K sets.
Awesome review as per usual! Thanks for the value summary at the end, I always put a lot of faith in those. Fingers crossed you get your hands on a ZF9 soon
I can’t wait to see this tv in the shops in real life, as sometimes my naked eyes view differs from professional reviews. The lg C8 showed an incredible picture quality that was tremendously smooth and its colours were flicking out the screen, yet it had the most reasonable price.

Hello sir, please make a video on how to calibrate the A9F picture settings for maximum high color and picture quality to be used with the PS4 pro without using the A9F Game mode setting and without using the A9F’s auto settings....
Hello Vincent!... Thanks for the great video!... Very in-depth!... And don't worry, I didn't think it was too long... if it were up to me, you can make them longer!
Nice telly, but I think the 55” AF8 is a better buy even if it’s not as advanced, it’s down to a regular price of £1999 now too. I think a good setup is an AF8, Apple 4K TV and a Nintendo Switch, or a PS4 Pro if you want prettier graphics.
If you are just using it for gaming then the AF9 is not worth it over the AF8 or even LG screens. But if you want it a movie reference standard screen then the AF9 is the one.
bighands69 I don’t need a movie reference standard screen! But the lag time on the AF8 is a lot worst then the AF9 in 1080P gaming; which is what the Switch runs in.
@@marksapollo If you are doing standard 30fps gaming it will not matter what OLED screen you are using as all of them would be able to handle it. 60fps gaming is an entirely different issue. No oled screen can do 60fps gaming. No matter what people tell you. If you want a screen for pure gaming I would suggest an LCD screen. Sony make some amazing local dimming screens that will give very good dark levels and be bright at the same time for gaming and be able to do 60fps gaming and look good for movies.
That's what you call a review. I'd buy this TV if I was in the market for new TV as of now. I'd miss 3D on my LG E6 for sure. But I have to let it go at some point anyway. Just have to accept it I guess that 3D will be "that old format" you watch in your retro tech room.
Nice to hear they relaxed the ABL. HDR sounds very good on the AF9, DV though hmm. A1 still good to me also as long as Auto dimming issue done in the previous updates is sorted.
Nice review....much more accurate on the whites than orther brands who looks more bluish.....and all that new cpu power under, think i finaly fall il love with sony leds.
Question. It’s November 2021. Some retailers are flash discounting these 2018 Master Series models for $ 1300 55 inch. Given improvements, is it a mistake to buy the 3 1/2 year old Master Series in 2021?
High end televisions never go on sale on Black Friday.. They may put the lower end LG Oleds on sale like the B series for like $500 off, but none of the higher end LG or Sony stuff is going on sale, believe me.
I would only recommend an A8 over the LG C8 if you're going to be using the electrostatic speaker, otherwise the C8 is a better choice due to its smoother OS, brighter display (better HDR), and superior input lag.
Question: do new TVs have (or will have) profile/setting sharing and downloads? For example, can an expert like this upload his settings profile and other TV users can download and use them for their sets?
Excellent review! Could you publish the best screen settings (possible to make in TV menu) for different sources like: SD TV broadcasting, DVD, Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV, GoPro Black 6 or 7 4k 60fps footage. Also do you have more precise guidance how to make screen calibration (best settings) and what is needed for this. Unfortunately it's not easy to find professional calibrators in every country. All described before for 50Hz (Europe) region. Thank you and keep going!
Great review as Usual, thanks for the in depth coverage Vincent. I seriously don't know why sony can't fix the damn hdr support on RUclips even with a newer chipset on this tv
Great job Vincent. Do you consider this Sony AF9 and the Panasonic FZ950 the best two oled so far? If you will make a comparison between those 2 tv's it would be great :)
Considering the price, Philips 803 seems to be the overall best. Forget Ambilight... Just consider Picture quality, design, remote, HDR upscaling and price. I would buy it hands down, if I can find one
P Mu Be glad to not be able to get one (803) ... no HDR10 on AmazonPrime or RUclips (just SDR), no Dolby Vision at all, intensive image rentention due to "overdriving" the panel...nice set for watching SDR though ;-) ... but we are in HDR times now
Vincent says the upscaling of the A9F is the best, but can anyone verify that it does indeed beat the LG C8? I still watch a ton of HD cable content (720p) and so the quality of upscaling is super important to me. Thanks!
😇 you make me feel so good thinking about purchasing this thank you so much the way you explain things about technology features ccontinue to be brilliant at what you do!

Oh yeah also Netflix calibrated mode is more focused around non hdr content. This is we're You'll see major improvements. Think of it like you stated before dynamic meta data being used on static meta data. When watching dolby vision we let them do there meta data. No criticism at all buddy I love your work man.
Sony KD-55AF9 vs LG C855(not LG flagship but dont need a signature model since dont care about sound and design that much. As far as i know C8 has same quality as flagships due to same processor. Why pay more?). 1) I watch movies 2) i play games 3) i care about menu speed and smart tv convenience. I dont care about sound since i have home theater system. I dont mind paying more if it really better. Would be happy for any advice!
hi, i have an x93e sony 4k tv i bought early this year. Netflix 4k sometimes looks very dark if i upgrade to this one will it look much brighter? also worth the upgrade in your option? thx
Hi Vincent. Love your videos. I'm a calibrator in the US and I was just wondering how you calibrate HDR white balance. With SDR I typically use the 30 and 80 point ire but with HDR are the points different? Thanks!
Hey Vincent! I found you today on youtube because i searched a test for the AF9 and you are awesome! Funny jokes and a fair, good review! Well done, master calibrator! So you think i can buy it for my PS4 Pro? Thanks :)
Fantastic rewiew...as always the best...and it is not easy to asses that...the question is...If you had to pay for a tv...what would you take home? C8 or A9F or Panasonic? It is noticiable 200 nits difference since we humans see in a logarithmic basis? Thanks for your time
Real talk, sir - the R&D departments at Sony, LG, and/or Samsung need to hire you, posthaste, as their respective subject matter expert (SME) consultant on all things display calibration related. You amaze me with your very in-depth insights - and your occasional wittiness adds to your showmanship. "If I were a rich man," I'd fly you over here, to Los Angeles, to personally calibrate every new TV that I would purchase. I appreciate your investment, and may the lottery be with you. Now, back to my research for the very best TV - that I can afford. 'Peace.
I love this kickstand design. I'm bummed to hear that the panel used for this A9F model is the same panel as the A8F. Especially when HDMI 2.1 is right around the corner and seeing how LG can now reach over 800 Nits on a 10% window. Hope to get a 2019/2020 follow-up to this model. They should have the AV1 codec installed into these sets soon also for better PQ when streaming.
Vinc could you please review the new XG95 lCDs 65* vs 75 how many zones they have and how does the x-wide angle in 75inc work. Does it mess up the colours and blacks like in zf9? Are there more zones than the previous year models? And how do the black levels stack up to other tvs do the algorythms work better than last year?
I am now in the middle of deciding between AF9 65inc or an alternative lcd like xg95 as the tv will sit in a well lit room with plenty of sun even though I know that oled will give the bwst details black lvls non blur etc but hdr not so great and peak brightness on the lower end and thats what Iam afraid of.
QUESTION: Which firmware Version was installed when you tested? Since this can influence the picture processing, it would be nice to know on which Firmware you are basing your professional judgement. The reason I ask: the problems you discovered with the motion processing (ticker lines) could have been solved already.
Onbekend HH The occasional tearing and stuttering in 50Hz broadcast was still present with [Film mode] "Auto" on the latest firmware of 6.0358 at this time of writing.
Vincent do you calibrate the A9F to 2.2 gamma or leave it like it comes out of the box at 2.4 gamma? If you use a 2.2 gamma wouldn't the tv have more brightness

If you guys want this amazing Sony Oled, go and get it now! Price has dropped to 2400€. Fantastic price for a Masterpiece TV.

If you are doing standard 30fps gaming it will not matter what OLED screen you are using as all of them would be able to handle it.
Good video bro which one is better to play in pc. The Sony xf9005 or Samsung nu8005? Thanks for your answer, good job
Sony XF9005.
Excelent review as always.
Just waiting to put my money on a 75 Z9F, but I have to watch your review first.
Nice review....much more accurate on the whites than orther brands who looks more bluish.....and all that new cpu power under, think i finaly fall il love with sony leds.

Just to confirm that Pioneer UDP-LX500 Dolby Vision works on AF9 without any issue!! PQ is just amazing on" Dolby Vision Bright"
Great video as always Vincent - looks like there’s a new king in town
Question. It’s November 2021. Some retailers are flash discounting these 2018 Master Series models for $ 1300 55 inch. Given improvements, is it a mistake to buy the 3 1/2 year old Master Series in 2021?
Hi Vincent ..what do you think which is better Sony A9f or L.g w8 ? keep up the great videos we really apreciate your time :) thank you
Hi Vincent. Has the situation changed at all concerning Dolby Vision presentation on the AF9?
That was incredibly interesting and useful. Thank you
Gonna go for AF8 come black friday ..not sure I can justify the price jump for AF9.
Do you they usually have black Friday deals on these high end tvs?
@@Dats_my_dawg Yeh man ..won't be huge discounts at £2999 at the moment ..reckon they'll drop.it it £2700 minimum.
@@SlimeSquare better HDR on Af8 no? And yeh i like the idea of the acoustic surface.
For PS4 pro gaming - would you recommend this or Panasonic FZ952? (or any other oled for that matter)
Is this much better than the A1e for an upgrade?
Great review as Usual, thanks for the in depth coverage Vincent. I seriously don't know why sony can't fix the damn hdr support on RUclips even with a newer chipset on this tv
Great job Vincent. Do you consider this Sony AF9 and the Panasonic FZ950 the best two oled so far? If you will make a comparison between those 2 tv's it would be great :)
Considering the price, Philips 803 seems to be the overall best. Forget Ambilight... Just consider Picture quality, design, remote, HDR upscaling and price. I would buy it hands down, if I can find one
P Mu Be glad to not be able to get one (803) ... no HDR10 on AmazonPrime or RUclips (just SDR), no Dolby Vision at all, intensive image rentention due to "overdriving" the panel...nice set for watching SDR though ;-) ... but we are in HDR times now
The glass demo became boring after two runs, we need more demo footage!
Are there HDR10+ example content? Every test video I've tested which was listed as HDR10+ was in fact a standard HDR10 file.
Sir I should take the Sony a9f ... Samsung Q9f whose life is good for both of them sir I am from India please help me I am very confuse please Sir help me Sony a9f is picture quality is very good but life I don’t know 🤷♀️
@16:45 "constipated Batflec" LOL! Loved the Elon Musk twitter joke too.
Vinc, Another awesome review. Thank you.
Oh yeah also Netflix calibrated mode is more focused around non hdr content. This is we're You'll see major improvements. Think of it like you stated before dynamic meta data being used on static meta data. When watching dolby vision we let them do there meta data. No criticism at all buddy I love your work man.
Netflix mode is just marketing crap.
TheCund no not really I actually have the Z9F 65in and with my testing it’s not a marketing thing
hi Vince, you didn't talk much about the speakers, how does it fare vs the new A9G? spec wise, it looks like a downgrade
Sony KD-55AF9 vs LG C855(not LG flagship but dont need a signature model since dont care about sound and design that much. As far as i know C8 has same quality as flagships due to same processor. Why pay more?).
1) I watch movies
2) i play games
3) i care about menu speed and smart tv convenience.
I dont care about sound since i have home theater system. I dont mind paying more if it really better. Would be happy for any advice!
hi, i have an x93e sony 4k tv i bought early this year. Netflix 4k sometimes looks very dark if i upgrade to this one will it look much brighter? also worth the upgrade in your option? thx
Looking for a comparison video between Sony OLED Master class and LG 2018 OLED from you
i have *A1 65* its amazing don't think to change it
U dont have to
A1 will be competative for the next 4 years
Thanks :)
Great review, I enjoyed your funny, and relaxed review much more.
Am i better off getting the olded lg 55" instead of this one?
Thanks for the test Vincent.
Fantastic rewiew...as always the best...and it is not easy to asses that...the question is...If you had to pay for a tv...what would you take home? C8 or A9F or Panasonic? It is noticiable 200 nits difference since we humans see in a logarithmic basis? Thanks for your time
C8 is not in the same category of AF9 or Panasonic and the half price of it it's a demonstration of that.
@@SuomiFinland78 - What utter rubbish.
Christ, some of the comments on these boards really are imbecilic...
Take a sedative, idiot.
Excellent review full thumbs up
Does the Panny Gz950 come close to AF9 in picture accuracy?
Vincent you crack me up. Always know there will be a punchline somewhere. Excellence with a touch if houmour. 👍😁
'Peace.
If you were to use this tv as a center channel speaker what is the power limit it take RMS?
Hey i was wondering what you would recommend to buy to calibrate my 4k tv
Best OLED TV of 2018
I love this kickstand design.
The panel is great though.
My A1 had banding and sent it back. I wonder if the new a9f still suffer from this
You should test Sony TVs like Z9D, A9F for Dolby Vision. Make a detailed video.
QUESTION: Which firmware Version was installed when you tested? Since this can influence the picture processing, it would be nice to know on which Firmware you are basing your professional judgement. The reason I ask: the problems you discovered with the motion processing (ticker lines) could have been solved already.
Onbekend HH The occasional tearing and stuttering in 50Hz broadcast was still present with [Film mode] "Auto" on the latest firmware of 6.0358 at this time of writing.
you have done better tv reviews in the past but this one was too much talking technical stuff. is the tv picture quailty better than lg c8?
Vincent do you calibrate the A9F to 2.2 gamma or leave it like it comes out of the box at 2.4 gamma? If you use a 2.2 gamma wouldn't the tv have more brightness
2.2 gamma will look the picture look washed out in a dark room.
Getting flashes of Tong Po just kicking the stand to oblivion.
