  • THE MOST SOLD TELEMARK BINDING EVER
    The G3 Targa is most likely the #1 selling Telemark binding of ALL TIME, up to this point in history. It had a good run and thousands if not tens of thousands of people used the G3 Targa as their go-to binding. For nearly three years now, the G3 Targa has not been produced and all of the replacement parts associated with it discontinued. The only way to find these parts for the binding are through retail shops, like Freeheel Life, or salvaging parts from used bindings on the market.
    THE TELEMARK FEEL
    The relationship between a Telemark skier and their own personal turn is paramount. This feeling comes directly from the type of boot and Telemark binding that one chooses to use. It is for this reason alone that many Telemark skiers are hesitant to purchase and move to a different binding than they are currently on. The G3 Targa has been on so many Tele skier’s feet over the years, that it’s often the binding that is hardest for many to move on from, even if it’s nearly impossible to find the parts to fix them.
    WHAT SHOULD I DO?
    You have two choices:
    1. Upgrade your entire Telemark setup. If you are going to upgrade your boots at this point, you may want to look into New Telemark Norm (NTN). Beware that if you are coming from the G3 Targa binding though, this may cause the feeling that you are used to, to be a challenge to recreate. Our suggestion to best find a flex you might like, in NTN, would be the Rottefella Freedom NTN binding.
    BUY ROTTEFELLA FREEDOM NTN: bit.ly/RottefellaFreedomNTNBi...
    2. Want to stick with 75mm? We suggest the Voile Switchback. This is essentially a better version of the G3 Targa complete with: hardwires instead of cables, free-pivot touring mode built in, similar pivot point for a feeling closer to what you are used to, and available replacement parts.
    BUY VOILE SWITCHBACK: bit.ly/VoileSwitchbackTelemark...
    CONCLUSION
    Just because your G3 Targa is toast, doesn’t mean you have to give up Telemark skiing for good. In fact, as you have read above and learned from the video, there are several options to help you keep making turns.

    I recently switched from the G3 Targa’s to the Voile Switchback’s. Tore them out of an old set of skis. My shop didn’t remount them so I had to buy the new skis and bindings as a set.
    I’m happy with the performance. They ski well, but boy are they ugly.
    Having a supported binding is nice, and I’m buying from an American company that manufactures in the US, big bonus

      Love hearing that! Bummer on tearing them out. If you keep having that problem on the Switchback you may want to move over to a 6-hole pattern like the 22 Designs AXL or Vice. That can really help prevent that. Thanks for watching!

    Thank you for excellent, very helpful videos. I’ve just started using 22D Vice bindings with my favourite Garmont Energee boots. I’ve skied Targas since 2001. Priorly, 7Tm, Rainey Superloops, Voile mtn. cable, Rottefella Troll 3pin. I’m sure I’ll love Vice soon as I’ve worked kinks out. But, if Targa & parts were still available it’d still be my binding. I tour in Alico leather boots. Love ‘em. I would like to try ntn. If it works for me, great. But, thing is, I’d want ntn and my 75mm gear. I still have tours Voile mountaineer are perfect for. I see the various gear systems as options according to what they’re best suited for. Resort icy steeps or boarder mounds? Your toughest 75mm or NTN. Scouting & cutting fir snags for firewood? my good old comfy stuff.

    Does anyone else find it super frustrating that for want of a $20 cable (that is no longer available) I now have to spend $200+ for a new binding!? I don’t use Targas, but I’m finding the same problem with my beloved Hammerheads. (and I have lots of pairs of ‘em….and they all break the same part!)

      “Why won’t my 10-29 year old tele bindings last forever!” And this is why no one wants to invest in the R&D and manufacture new tele gear.

    • @FreeheelLife
      @FreeheelLife  Год назад

      Unfortunately for most of the manufacturers it becomes a choice of putting $ into a new product that the majority of clientele needs/wants. Hammerhead is a good example of this...with the creation of Vice and AXL, the lack of demand for HH began to not make sense to produce the parts any longer from cost perspective. HH is a great binding but the VICE and AXL were an improvement on the ideas that Rainey started with when he made the HH. Keep an eye on our used part section though...if anyone has HH parts it will be us. cheers and thanks for watching.

      Understood for sure. I will point out, however, that the lack of R&D is a much deeper topic and worth discussing. I've gone into it on my podcast a bunch. Surprisingly the data and observations that we have at FHL don't point towards people not spending on Telemark. In fact it's quite the opposite. People are spending on items, but there really aren't the correct items to get them to spend all the time. The R&D needs to come from smaller and new companies that can take the risk and understand what these folks are looking for. Here's a good listen to get you on the page of what I'm talking about. Thanks for watching. - Madsen /// ruclips.net/video/Y3XEqz2-uh4/видео.html

      @@FreeheelLife We need more boot options. I spend money on a new NTN setup last year, and WAY too much on boot fitting. For boots that STILL don't fit. I can totally see how NTN can be better, but without a boot that doesn't cause so much pain that it makes me puke after an hour of wearing it, once my 75mm stuff wears out, I may have to lock the heel back down.

    When swapping out the Targa for Switchback on the same ski, does the hole pattern match up? Do you have to use Binding Freedom or Quiver Killer inserts when swapping out the bindings if the hole pattern is the same?

    • @FreeheelLife
      @FreeheelLife  Год назад +1

      Great question - both the Targa and the Switchback use the old standard 4 hole pattern. We always use new holes for liability purposes, but that doesn't mean if there is no water damage and the holes are good that you couldn't swap out the bindings and just make sure to use some 2-part epoxy.

    What ntn binding would I like best if I like skiing the targa and the switchback x1?

    • @FreeheelLife

      Honestly at this point the Rottefella Freedom with a green spring box can be a good option. The pivot point is really what becomes the issue for most, not all, people. Meidjo with soft springs has a nice 75mm - like flex as well, but you'll need to go tech-toe on those. Hope that helps.

      I personally hated the feel of the Rotts when I was trying to move to non 75mm options. It felt really hingy, and had a bad bottoming out feeling. I like a smooth progressive flex throughout that is shared by the boot cuff, bellows, and binding. I would recommend the Outlaw. It seems everyone thinks the Outlaws are best for a more active setup (and they are fairly active for the NTN options), but the Outlaw set with a lower spring tension has a really nice progressive flex that works with the boot, and with the lower spring pre-tension, you get more travel w less chance of bottoming out.
