The screaming in pain is them showing her that they share her pain while they are actually just acting up. The whole movie we see Dani crying alone, isolating herself to cry and even being encouraged by christian to isolate herself to cry...Here at the end, they all hold her and scream with her - she is no more alone in the pain, they are with her and they make her think and feel like she is sharing the pain with them which makes her feel less pain.
When they all moan or cry together it's because they share all their feelings. They bear the pain with her and for her, and its the first time that's happened in her life. That's why she was so ready to join them after becoming May Queen. Also the guy that killed the black guy was wearing the skin of the guy that peed of the ancestral tree, that's why he looked weird...

And the children playing "Skin The Fool" at the beginning is training for it. Mark is definitely the "fool" of the group.

At 21:24 - "What the heck is wrong with his eyes, with his face?" Mark is dead. His skin is being worn by one of the Harga, who is about to do serious violence to Josh.
it's wild how much of the point of the movie was missed in this react just because of the incredible amount of expectations that were held throughout much of it's runtime. Yes, some of the outcome was sorta guessed, but this isn't an average horror movie with a "final girl" like some slasher flick. It's about a sinister transformation aimed at Dani due to her vulnerability and need for meaningful human connection.
I still don't understand why everyone thinks Dani was May Queen just by chance. How in the hsll..
The guy when they first arrive at Harga; he says hi to everyone casually and then he gives Dani a bear hug and says welcome home. Then, at the Attestupan Ritual; Sieb [ the lady who coerced Christian into mating Maja/Maya; she is sizing Dani upset and checking her out and only her. She seemed to be testing the waters with Dani ; seeing how she reacts to their rituals. Then, the foreshadowing when they're assembled as The Dance of Death; Dani is standing tall; above the rest as they slowly crouch.. Iowa m
I can't say this was *fun*... but I'm so glad I didn't have to watch this one alone!!

I really want to watch this, but it's midnight here and I need some sleep. Anyways, as a Swedish fan of this film, here's the usual facts I generally comment on!
I am honestly so impressed with the research that went into this, because a LOT has historical inspiration.
Ättestupa was indeed a custom sometimes done during viking times. When someone grew old and a burden, they'd have the choice to jump off a cliff and still get a hero's death. The blood eagle is also from viking times. Your spine would be opened up and the lungs pulled out as a torture, while you're still alive.
The music, clothes, all the imagery is clearly inspired by our folk culture, and the name of the commune comes from a song, Hårgalåten, in which the devil dresses as a fiddler and makes all the young people dance until they died, just like they did with the dance around the May Pole.
Honestly, the least authentic part of the film is the landscape, as it wasn't filmed in Sweden and that shows.
It looks like many places in Sweden. And there is no proof that blood eagle was practiced.
The spine isn’t opened up. That would paralyze and/or kill you by itself. The ribs are detached from the spine and splayed open. Very different from opening the spine

The scenes where they all moan together serve two purposes. On one hand, yes, it's about sharing the pain and making her feel understood and empathized with. But there's another aspect that is just as important, especially in a cult context.
Imagine yourself in Dani's position. You're crying, moaning, having a complete breakdown. By everyone joining in with you, their voices blend with yours to the point where it cannot be discerned among the others, muting your lament. They invalidate your pain. They take away your individuality.
These two contrasting effects both serve the manipulation in service of the cult. It's simply ingenious and is applied in various forms within cults.
That was a guy wearing Mark's skin as a mask. That's why he looked so weird.

This is Folk Horror. The classic vintage folk horror film is 1972's The Wicker Man, which has the same basic story as this, this one with some new twists and turns added.
there was some things you guys missed which a lot of people do theyre hard to spot. after josh got hit with the hammer while trying to take a pic of the book it wasnt mark. they skinned mark and it was a cult member wearing his face/skin
Also, when Dani is running and crying with the flower gown on, you can see her sisters face with the gas mask in the trees. You guys seem to be confused by a lot. I recommend watching some analysis videos about it to understand the meaning of it.

I disagree about them seeming like a new couple. 8 months and you're usually still in the honeymoon phase. This is a level of distance that can only be achieved after years. For most people there would be some really ugly fights but Christian is too passive aggressive to just say what he really feels and Dani is too scared of abandonment to confront him. Both of them are just pretending. He's pretending to still care and she's pretending that she doesn't know it.

Different cultures have different customs when it comes to death. The Japanese used to leave their elderly in a forest to die at some point. This commune was living with non-modern conventions such as no electricity so the students who wanted to write a thesis on their culture found it fascinating and didn't want to leave in disgust and insult their practices. The mallet to the head was not a "killing" it was putting the guy out of his misery as it was an end of life suicide. When you said the guy was dumb going around at night due to missing people and killings.... there were no killings and they did not know anyone was missing. Your preconceived notions of horror movies ruined your perceptions of the character's motives. The guy who engaged in the sex ceremony was under influence of many drugs... he was somewhat attracted to her and wasn't really a good boyfriend to the main girl. The insular community has to bring in new dna to avoid mutations like the deformed kid. The final ceremony is an offering to appease their gods and give them good harvests, an extreme example of what a lot of cultures practice.
"Were no killings?" The man who comes in and clubs him over the head is literally wearing the sliced-off face of his friend.
Idk if you yourself walked out with an understanding of the movie if your takeaway was "Cult in the woods that burns people alive and murders/skins people is OK because other cultures have done similar things". Not to mention, they purposefully inbreed to make deformed people like Reuben.
I honestly love this movie because everyone looks at it differently. Some see the ending as bittersweet, some see it is hopeless. It sucks all the fun in reactions to go on a self righteous rant because other people viewed and interpreted the movie differently.
@@HorrorLover I was only explaining the actions of the characters in the movie as opposed to the reactors who were saying the characters were dumb and that if it were them, they'd be leaving as soon as the people died in the end-of-life ceremony. That may be an honest reaction of some people but because some of the students were there studying their culture, that would not be a reaction of some of them... therefore they weren't "dumb".

A lot of unclear things can be explained with the movie's message. The empathy they showed Dani was fake. They made Christian reproduce with the red haired on purpose so Dani sees it. They wanted to break her link to extern world. (Christian cheated on you, but look, we're sharing your pain. You're not alone anymore if you join us) The british couple who tried to leave represents a healthy relationship compared to Dani and Christian. They show love to each other and have common sense trying to leave compared to Christian's group who are blind towards their own guts. Christian's friends all care about either getting laid by the swedish girls or getting their thesis done.
I disagree that their empathy was fake. Their entire plan was to get Dani to join their community for real. The hospitality to all the others was fake, because they were there to be sacrificed, but they wanted Dani to become one of them, so they were treating her like she was already part of the community.
That’s kind of funny, given how the empathy of the boyfriend and his friends towards Dani was even more fake. This movie has multiple messages, and you’re selling it short if you think it only has “one true message”.
Well, I don't know if they planned for her to see it or not; they led her away when it was to happen, and they told her she doesn't need to look in there. But it did help serve that purpose. However, the primary reason for having Christian have sex with Maja was to impregnate her for the purpose of genetic diversity so they don't die out from inbreeding. Although, they put way too much stake in a single encounter, as if pregnancy were assured.
At 16:59 - "Did they not just see what we just saw? How are they talking about homework?" Part of the problem with you skipping a LOT of the first 15 minutes is that you missed the fact that one of the main points of this trip to Sweden was so that Josh could do his Sociology Thesis about Northern European Midsummer practices. Pelle invited them all, and Christian was still trying to figure out what to do for HIS thesis.
If you didn't speed past it, you would have noticed that Josh was curious about "if they really DID the Attastupa." Pelle nods enthusiastically.
While we are all creeped out as heck, the fact is that Josh (and the community) knew this would happen. And now Christian has decided that HE wants to do his thesis on Harga. Josh is angry that Christian stole his idea.
Did they skip the beginning? I figured they just clipped out sections for the react, but I hope they watched it all.
At 27:45 - I'm not sure that I followed... Look, Thor, I get the idea that if you didn't speed past a lot of the stuff that actually develops the characters and explains the motivations of some of the folks, you might have understood a bit more.
I agree with the paintings being the equivalent to the miniatures of hereditary. Miniatures are being set up and controlled by a force out of their control and in Midsommar the paintings foreshadow what will happen to some of the characters, just like the opening painting.
At 24:46 - "Why is his skin like a wing?" Jason has been Blood Eagled. Perhaps as a penalty for mocking one of their most sacred events (the Attastupa, or the killing of the 72-year-olds), they sliced up his back and pulled out his lungs. It was a Viking torture. And since he didn't like what he saw with his eyes, they put flowers in his eyes.
the not leaving is definitely odd in the overall story BUT they were there to study the group, im sure there would be things in some cultures that would make me want to up and leave unless i was there to actually study.
After the initial shock of the ritual suicide they basically had a very small window to actually decide to leave and give up on the study or stay and immediately get drugged. The MC definitely was already in too deep with the manipulation and the others where to self involved in thinking how much this would add to their work.
Its definitely not a typical horror but is a very psychological setting, the ease of which they brought the members in and indoctrinated the main character, only actually killing those that committed crimes in their eyes

Americans being Americans... Scared and shocked and thinking a simple ritual from a traditional old community with European roots is too uncivilised and primitive and definitely didn't understand a thing about the symbolism of the ceremonies and their culture and cosmology.

Vacayd in Norway in the summer time in college. It's definitely light all the time. It's weird. You need blackout curtains in your room for sure. It does get a little dark in the middle of the night. (Think, right before the sun comes up in the morning)

In the North parts of Norway and Sweden the sun never sets for a couple of months in the summer. I live in the southern parts of Sweden and in June the sun sets around midnight and then rises around 2 am, but the sky never gets fully dark, its still light along the horizon.
Likewise now in winter we have very long nights instead, here the sun rises around 10 am and sets at 4 pm, in the North it barely rises at all. We're all on vitamin d supplements.

I really enjoyed this reaction. I know this movie is a lot, but I do love it. In my opinion, it’s a break up movie in the most bizarre way! It’s about Dani losing a family, and finding a new family(however messed up).
She literally had no one, which was why she was a perfect choice for the cult…. They always target people who are vulnerable,and broken. This movie really needs the second watch if you can be open to that in the future. I highly recommend the director’s cut. It goes more in depth in Christian & Dani’s relationship, and he’s even more of a douche in those scenes!😂

There’s so much going on in this movie, but I enjoy your basic take-it’s a break up movie. I must have seen the director’s cut, because it was pretty clear that the boyfriend was a jerk and a moral weakling. His friends weren’t much better.
I think there are other elements that relate to our culture’s detachment from negative emotions like grief. Feelings are uncomfortable and socially awkward. (And we could get into how the boyfriend resentfully allowed the relationship to be prolonged to maintain a self image of himself.)
There’s also the anthropological detachment that gave the friends an illusion of objective observation. They were oblivious to the threat because it didn’t fit into their narrative of graduate anthropology students doing field work.
And there’s also the conceit we have of horror at these strange evil practices, as if our own culture was superior and not a death cult itself. That might be something I’m bringing to the film and not actually present in the work. (We should be horrified by both.)

It's not an island, there is no detective looking for a disappeared girl....in common just the fire at the end

Weird. Creepy. Horrifying. That’s all I got. A good movie to check out is also “The wicked and the dead.” It’s not *as* creepy but, it’s still pretty good. I’m going to seek therapy for the trauma I experienced watching this. 😣
Man I think you guys missed a whole lot of plot points. Like the “love story” artwork, which literally showed what the girl did to Dani’s boyfriend - when everyone was eating at the long table, his was the only glass with drink in it that had a red tint. He found the thing under his bed. Then when the man clapped it activated the voodoo on him. Which is why he went and had sex with that girl.
He took that drugged drink while Dani was doing the May Queen dance and inhaled something else just before going into that room with the girl, Maya.
You gotta have a brain to appreciate this. Otherwise confused and sarcastic (this reaction) is the result.

Liked the movie and cinematography/shooting were awesome! I get there are certain “accepting” we all gotta have when watching movies…..but if your not immediately bouncing after that cliff jump it’s hard for me to get past that 🤷🏽♂️
I just now had a very philosophical thought about this movie.
It is fairly well-known that christian holidays pretty much replaced the pre-christian holidays.
Christianity demonized the pre-christian religions and nowadays people aren't really aware of that.
Midsommar in sweden has been talked about like the one tradition, that christianity was not able to put another label on. They tried saying its the birth of John the baptist, but no one in sweden really knows that unless you happen to look at a almenac. Any other country celebrate the birth of John the baptist with dances around a pole?
I wonder now how many people, (americans) will fear hearing that someone is celebrating midsummers eve because of this movie, just like it did 1000 years ago when they hear of the "non-christian tradition of midsommar in Sweden.
Yeah, i know they make bad movies aobut christianity too, but the majority of you all knows thats all fiction. What do you know about midsummers.

Actually, in Russia there's something sort of similar! We had a summer solstice holiday called Kupala, that was renamed Ivan Kupala in honour of John the Baptist during the adoption of Orthodoxy. It's a big summer celebration where you look for magic herbs, girls send floral wreaths down the river as a way of divination, people jump over a large bonfire, etc etc. It's kinda cool how similar traditions manifest differently in different places :)

I think of this movie a bit like “The Wicker Man”. In that film, a non-Christian cult is the center of the action. An interesting but disturbing choice.
She's been looking for someone to lean on and be helped. The others even her boyfriend where chores but these people she's not. She's family at least tol 72 lol. Then bye bye lol.
About leaving, they are a dysfunctional group, and they behave like one. None of them are the type to rally the group so they can all walk out of there. And yes, they were drugged quite a bit. I mean they are given drugs the moment they arrive and they keep being given more. Hiking through the wilderness with little to no food or water and no camping supplies probably wouldn't be their first choice under those circumstances. The two old people killing themselves might have made the commune a more appealing subject for a thesis rather than scare Josh or Christian away. Pelle later told them he'd talk to the elders about them doing their project there, so it's not like the people in the commune were acting hostile towards them. That's how i see it.
Thought it was Buffy, dangit! This was a DISTURBING movie! And yeah watched it.
I liked your reaction, I haven't watched this myself. Though from experience from a cult trying to recruit me- they do target people who are vulnerable, usually people that are at their lowest- grieving death, alone in the world, or even suicidal. I learned I was targeted by a nurse in the cult, she read my papers and "knew" I would be perfect to join. She used it to get close to me. She then left that place to work at another doctors office. I saw the signs and left before it got too extreme.
They basically love bomb people, make you feel accepted and special. Slowly introducing new parts so it doesn't feel strange, once they started pushing how I was supposed to dress, what I 'had' to do, and act, I dropped contact with them. Apparently she was actually planning to leave, and was trying to 'fill' her spot with me.
Some great reactions, thanks to you both! My theory on Pele and how he knew Danni would come to Sweden, is that he's the real Oracle (not the disabled child that was implied). He drew Danni as the May Queen because he had that special foresight and saw it all happen in advance, including that they would be a couple one day. Just a theory. Such a weird movie, I prefer Hereditary myself, but can't deny it's beautifully shot!
Or he was tasked with the job of going out into the world and returning with a May Queen and some random DNA to keep the gene pool viable. Remember what was said about his ability to judge character? It’s easier to judge who will be selected if it’s your job to select them.
OH! Also...I've done LSD on a few occasions. The visual depictions like the flowers throbbing and all that can be like that. I had an expeience playing pool on acid where I saw previous games' energy stack up above the table. Then other times I just laughed a lot and felt connected to everything. There's no one size fits all or one trip. I never had a bad trip though.
I thought the visuals were mostly spot on-very subtle stuff happening in the corner of your eye, vibrant colors that pull in and hold your attention, natural patterns taking on importance or significance. The grass growing on the hand was almost too well realized, but I’ll go with it.
Anyway, I thought it was one of the best representations of psychedelic drugs I’ve seen in a movie.
How did the “actual Thor” not completely see and understand the meaning of all the Nordic symbolism and customs?

HEY! FUN FACT! You know when they find the guy hanging alive with his lungs outside his body? That was possibly a REAL THING. It was called The Blood Eagle and was a form of torture/execution used by the vikings. There is some disagreement about whether it ACTUALLY happened but there were historical descriptions of it.
Why the fuck did you initiate with FUN FACT and then proceed to claim it’s not?
I think a good title/concept for a sequel would be Samhain (sa:win). It's the longest night of the year, the veil between the living and dead at it's thinnest. A time for honoring the recent dead and ancestors. Much room for her to process the loss of her family better and the death of her travel companions, and potential for their angry spirits to interact with them. I'd like to see Ari explore how the community deals with the thinning of the veil! Much more potential for spookies and processing of guilt and trauma!
Yeah so. The entire movie is an allegory for breakup and grief. At the end when she smiles she finally feels the sweet release from the toxic relationship she endured for so many years and got over him, symbolically breaking up and moving on with the death of her boyfriend. If you look in the trees during their psychedelic trips you see faces and things. Very cool stuff and I'd look into the symbolism throughout the film

I love this movie - there are things hidden in every corner and Florence Pugh's acting was fantastic. You should check some behind the scenes videos to see how much you missed when you were laughing about nudity and violence lol
Strong hallucinogens, among their many effects, can make you feel like you are in a psuedo-cartoon or like reality is embedded in a vibrant syrup and you can literally stir it with your hands -- or, so I've heard......

Some of it slipped through. In the scene where Dani and the young women are howling in pain together, a few of them can’t contain their reactions.
Part of why they might have been distant is that she was going through a lot with the loss of not just one family member but three. She probably pulled away and he probably didn't know how to deal. This was a really disturbing movie...
Not so much pulling away, but going deep into depression. Prior to the death of her entire family, the boyfriend was going to break up with her, but, as you say, “didn’t know how to deal with it”. So he prolongs it to preserve his own self-image of being a good supportive person, but he doesn’t support her emotionally. He resents her. Really, he’s weak and a child. It was probably hard on him to put up with her grief, right?

Seriously? It's a word. It's nothing to get upset over. I personally find it refreshing after hearing so many channels start censoring themselves as if they were pandering to children.
That’s one way of looking at it. Another way to see it is as a break up movie.

Most likely. They had all that planned. That red head and others threw that competition for her to win especially that red head. Yeah he said he can relate to her cause he lost his family too and each time he's talking to her he's like grooming her or priming her. He wants her for himself that's like end game maybe. Have her be may queen and her be with him. He knows Christian don't deserve her. He's mistreating her. At least he'd treat her better probably. She's fully accepted lol. She got a new family. New friends. Who needs therapy. He's Bern a dush to her before he got drugged. She noticed since they got there he looking AR that red head lol. She's home she's not going anywhere lol. She definitely picks him. That was the last straw. He was the only one anchoring her to real world. Once that's gone she's basically not Dani anymore. The cult wanted her to sacrifice him so by that time she's transitioning or becoming one with cult so she's more susceptible to what they want her to do lol. That's not Dani by the end. Yea, looking away is the proper reaction.
In fact, it'd be best to just look away for the entire movie. You don't want it burned into your psyche. It's demonic, to say the least.
Personally I never found this movie scary, it tried Way too hard to creep you out and yet at the same time telegraphed everything that was going to happen and that sex scene was absolutely hilarious 😆 but what was actually scary was people’s reaction to the ending, The whole story is about a girl being groomed to become a member of a Cult and viewers were happy for her 🤷♂️
Wow. You totally missed the point of this movie.
This movie is not working out for me. It almost seems like they were trying to spice this movie up with disturbance and cover up the lame story.

Midsommar and Hereditary seem to have no plot. I watched both in full, and understood nothing. They were just disturbing for the sake of being disturbing
That’s a really surprising take: for me, Hereditary had a clear narrative thread about how generational trauma leaves a toll on people in ways beyond their control, and Midsommar is about how cults prey upon socially isolated and emotionally traumatized people.
