"this whole family needs therapy." yep. that pretty much sums up this movie in one sentence.
aside from that, there's so much amazing symbolism and foreshadowing in this movie. for instance, if you go back to the first scene of Peter in class they were talking about Heracles and whether his story is more tragic or less tragic since he had no choice over the outcome. it directly parallels the journey this family goes on because from the very beginning, they were put on this path by the cult and they had no choice in the matter, which makes it more tragic because they could do nothing except watch as they became victims in their own demise. the symbolism of the doll houses/miniatures was also part of this as they were like dolls, trapped in this story and there was nothing they could do to stop it. Ari Aster truly is a genius. great reaction Hayley! ❤

Sadness and trauma are horrifying experience for some. General audiences think horror has to be knives stabbing, ghosts in the corner, etc. Filmmakers who thinning outside of the box push the envelope. One of my favorite horror films, is about loneliness, "Synechdoche, NY". It's not marketed as horror whatsoever, the only reason I know it's considered because the writer/director Charlie Kaufman said in interview the studios asked him to make a horror movie and had no interest in making a typical predicable horror film. He decided loneliness was scary. It's a drama, but buried in it's heart is the fear of being alone. Man's first instinct is to survive. Man's second instinct is to be wanted.

Btw I didn’t realize until much later but it looks like that Charlie was never herself since birth. I thought Charlie was herself and they let her be until the ritual was completed were they merge Charlie and Paimon together into Peter’s body. But I was wrong she always possess by Paimom. (Mom said “you never cried even when you were born”). Charlie does show some symptoms that go in hand with Autism and the clicking is just a tick when stressful situations happen. Charlie is an unique character so she is hard to understand by just watching the movie one time 😅

Similar to the way The Exorcist creates an atmosphere for the movie’s use of gore disturbing scenes. There’s probably scarier movies than those two but what they do, they do exceptionally.

And Paimon decorates his ride with decapitated heads. I just love every aspect of this movie used all this notes and really presented it in the film.

Paimon was originally meant to posses Annie's dad or brother, but both men killed themselves before he could do so. Presumably, they both realised what Annie's mom was trying to do, but were written off as mentally ill.
The cult were stuck with what to do, so Annie's mom bullied her into having children. Annie on some level knows any children she has will be doomed (hence why she tried to have a miscarriage and tried to kill them when sleepwalking) and so kept Peter away but caved to letting Charlie know her grandma. As a result, Charlie was possesed as a baby by Paimon.
    TL;DR Charlie is Paimon.
But Paimon doesn't want to be a girl. So the witches created this convolted plan to put Paimon in Peter, which succeeds at the end.
    The tragedy with Annie is:
    1. She genuinely loves her kids, but wasn't raised in a loving home and struggles to be a good parent. Her violent behaviour (trying to kill her kids) was her trying to 'save them' quite sincerely.
    2. She said at the start that she 'is blamed'. And she is. But really she was just like a doll in a doll house controlled by higher forces.
