    21:14 There was an ancient Norse tradition called Ättestupa. In times of scarcity old people were encouraged to jump off cliffs to spare their families from having to care for them.

      Listen, this comment made my day. I'm not going to lie, sometimes I do wonder if I'm too boring or annoying and that's the reason why my channel doesn't move forward BUT commets like this make me feel better since they highlight the attention and effort that I actually put on my videos :)

      @@amandamiquilena Not at all. I don’t watch all your reactions because I don’t want anything spoiled if I haven’t seen it. But you’ve got je ne sai quoi that I think all of us feel. You’re the friend we haven’t met yet.
      I think there is something weird about reaction videos, although weird is the wrong word. What does it say about us that we like them so much? It’s an interesting cultural question, no? Of course, I know why I like your videos in particular. You are supercool, your personality is enchanting, eres muy chido. In short, you are la chingona. 😄 (Mexican slang. I don’t know what they say in Venezuela. Muy padre?)

      @@amandamiquilena oh I missed this reply!!! Sorry!
      Your content definitely is not the reason, RUclips is a fickle animal and certain channels are promoted more for absolutely zero reason, people claim it's "the algorithm" or whatever, but there's more to it than that I'm sure.
      The RUclips reaction market is saturated with awful videos. Yours stand waaaay above those.
      Please don't give up. You are entertaining and interesting.
      A lot of reaction channels get more exposure as their subscriber count slowly grows, sometimes this is all it takes. Stick with it.

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 2 года назад +5

      Yes. There is a word for it: catharsis. The word goes back to Greek tragedies, and almost certainly further back to . . . . the religious rituals that evolved into the Greek theater of the classical age.
      Also, I believe the purpose of the ritualistic screaming and crying was not just for the benefit of the person in pain, but also for the participants. They were feeling her pain as well-it was group catharsis.
      Good insight, johnny johnny. 👍

    I'm so happy you love Midsommar, it's one of my favorite horror movies and a lot of people really don't like it, some of my friends included, probably because it's so different and kinda weird, lol!
    This movie is so special and one of a kind, I love it so much, it's so different than any other horror movie and I freaking love it for that, Florence Pugh, the main girl, did an incredible job and really got snubbed by the Oscars, she would have deserved it 100%!
    I also really like that you reacted to the beginning because a lot of reactors cut that part from their reaction and I don't understand why, it's super important to the story!
    I loved your reaction to it and keep up the amazing work, you are amazing!

    • @jbvader721

      Midsommar came out the same year as Little Women; the movie that Florence Pugh did get an Oscar nomination for. And she was excellent in Little Women; don't get me wrong. But, there is something more visceral and raw in her Midsommar performance that should've gotten nominated too (or even more than Little Women). Such a shame the Academy looks down on horror movies (just like Toni Collette in Hereditary).

    35:15 She's not speaking Swedish. She's hallucinating and speaking gibberish and the others are playing along.
    As a Swede, this was a weird movie. It felt more like black comedy than horror at many points, but a very useful reminder that every story where "civilized" people go off to a strange country and get hacked to bits probably have those people rolling their eyes at the screen too. (They're forcing her to eat herring! The horror! :o )

      Oooh! see? Thanks for leaving this comment because I did wonder what a Swedish person would think about this movie, that is also why I wanted to clarify that I was freaked out because of the red flags, not because the people seemed "different"

      @@amandamiquilena And you did a great job, I loved this reaction. ...Except maybe for how the bit that's a massive red flag in every horror movie ("You want us to stay in cabins in the middle of the woods with no modern amenities, no way to get out of here, and live entirely off vodka and pickled fish?") is actually genuinely most Swedes' idea of bliss. :) Just with slightly fewer human sacrifices in most cases.

      @@bjorn6495 tusen tak and mil gracias for these interesting comments. That’s 2,000.
      The border between cult and culture is often blurry, whether the cult is new or if it’s a living relic of older culture. How plausible was this fictional community to you, a Swedish person?

    • @bjorn6495
      @bjorn6495 2 года назад

      @@MarcosElMalo2 Tricky question. Depends on how much you believe them. If you scratch the human sacrifice thing, and if you assume that all the stuff about ancient rites and 90-year cycles is bullshit (since the Old Religion was stone dead by 1200 or so), then I could buy them as a bunch of hippies going back to like 1968 or so who developed into a cult. To the best of my knowledge, the only cult to actually kill people in Sweden in the last 100 years was a weird evangelical Christian community where they tried to cover up a murder.
      There's a lot about this that is eerily on point; the collective celebration, the pasted-on cheeriness (the dancing!), the insistence on doing things the *right* way (that bit how they couldn't drive Simon and Connie to the station together because "we don't break the law" is SPOT ON), the almost pathological love for the countryside... what really doesn't work (again, apart from the murders) is how damn solemn it looks. Midsommar is supposed to be FUN; people sitting straight-backed in silence is completely off.
      The Ättestupa thing (jumping off the cliff) *is* supposedly a real tradition back in the pre-Christian days, but nobody really knows if it ever actually happened or if it was just made up by Christian missionaries to make the Old Religion seem less fun. It certainly hasn't been a thing in the last 1,000 years at least.
      Ancestor worship isn't really a thing up here either. I mean, we're descended from people who decided to settle in a place where half the year is cold and dark, we don't worship those morons.:)

    Welcome to the Frida Kahlo First Time Watching Channel... I wonder if they kill 9 people only for this 90 year festival or is this a yearly thing like the May Queen? It seems that four Americans going to Sweden and then mysteriously never being heard from again would attract some Interpol inquiries. I know this place is isolated but the population around the nearby train station must have some suspicions. At first, I thought only visitor transgressors would be killed; but now I am thinking noobies either join or die. There is no way they can risk letting word get out. Anyway, thanks for the fun reaction and review. While most YT reviewers make a LOT of painfully awkward jokes (cue crickets sfx) , you are one of the very few who manages to be funny. I think you hit the nail on the head when you started talking about what is a culture. Christian has a great line about how they probably think when we put our old people in homes that’s insane. What is evil? What is wrong? Our culture has war and poverty and homelessness. We have the death penalty. We do the exact same rituals. Just in different ways. With different gods.
    I think the movie is saying that if this commune is considered a “cult”, then how would you describe your own culture?

    For the first 30 minutes it's a movie about a super clingy bummer of a girlfriend that you can't dump because she had a family tragedy. After that, it spends 2 hours as a rehashed but more obvious Dude-Bro version of the Wicker man. Did ANYONE not see the outsiders getting sacrificed coming? Really?

    that is not a cult , is a wide spread european tradition . In the north is Midsomer in English, in the south the church made it about some saint like S john , is a summer fest, the guy with the back open is a very known torture done by vikings add some names from angel wings to dragon wings

      very little in this movie is actually midsommar tradition. that is most definetly a cult that is practicing old norse rituals.

      Just the same, they kept track of lineage. You would still be the daughter or son of whomever, not just of the group.
      And it’s not quite the same, but I know of a few households in my neighborhood with huge (to me) families under one roof, and kid-raising is spread out amongst parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, siblings and cousins.

    Amanda watch The Wicker Man from 1973. Midsommar and Hereditary are both heavily influenced by that film. It is a thriller,a musical and a horror film all at the same time. It is considered to be one of the greatest horror films of all time.
