    I think in order to enjoy the show for all it has to offer, readers of the book should not expect a page by page adaptation from the book as it would just dampen the mood when everything’s not how it supposed to be done.

    As a writer, I feel like the book version of the Medusa reveal was very much written for a book. You have Percy's internal monologue comprised of short, tense and snappy sentences, gradually ramping up the moment with all the rhythm and mystery and chills that the written word can so profoundly generate. It's very much a 'made for a book' thing. You can't really get across those same emotions in a show, where there is no text, where you can see what's going on plain as day, etc. If they tried to do it like in the book, I feel that instead of being sucked into the moment, we would have figured out easily from all the visual clues that, yeah, this is Medusa.

    I prefer the shows view of Medusa. Books stuck to the "monster" medusa while the show changed her to be what she really is in the myths.
    And I love Lin being in the show.

    • @ericstorm6582
      @ericstorm6582 7 месяцев назад +5

      Um....no, what she really is is the earliest depiction and the earliest depiction is her being born a monster

    • @makslesniewski
      @makslesniewski 5 месяцев назад

      The show changed her to what she was in what was essentially Ovid's fanfiction based on her myth.

    I think the reason they aren’t using the names have power thing is because of how much it would slow down the conversations. Percy already is out of the loop so much and just including the name things

      Plus, it is hard to follow for the viewers, too. Imagine you know nothing about greek mythology and want to do some research, and you have to google "the kindly ones" :D Or maybe you know a little but can't use that knowledge because the names are never mentioned

    Also realistically why didn’t book annabeth figure out medusa early like the show. I like how the show is making annabeth smarter and more aware. Just because it isn’t like the books doesn’t mean it’s worse

    • @douglas2938

      It's funny how often books get away with telling us people are smart rather than showing it.

    • @TheIndianDeity
      @TheIndianDeity 7 месяцев назад +18

      Don’t forget Annabeth saw Percy explode water and control it around him and thought “must be a son of Zeus…”
      Glad the show took a different approach to show us Annabeth suspected after the bathroom scene. It makes her much smarter.

    • @lucindaflynn2016
      @lucindaflynn2016 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheIndianDeity Oh, that's not how I understood her comment about her thinking it was Zeus. I always thought it referred to Thalia as in thinking the child of the prophecy was a child of Zeus, but it obviously was not with Percy being around

  • @noahorakwue2653
    @noahorakwue2653 7 месяцев назад +14

    I think they changed Medusa to incorporate more of the actual myth because Rick Riordan obviously couldn't use the word "Rape" in a book meant for children, so this change works for me.

  • @jarrodserwa7305
    @jarrodserwa7305 7 месяцев назад +11

    This show an adutation so it won’t be word from word from the book. I actually like the changes that Rick has made. It makes sense that Annabeth a child of Athena would figure out who Medusa is straight away.

  • @smashbrandiscootch719

    It's an 8 episode adaptation. It cant possibly include every single scene from the books. CHILL my dude.

  • @tatounamadi5568
    @tatounamadi5568 7 месяцев назад +9

    I think you should take in consideration the fact that this is an adaptation meaning that there will be some alterations. if they do everything like in the book then it wouldn't be interesting to watch we are still in season 1 so they have room for more

  • @pandaluv891
    @pandaluv891 7 месяцев назад +7

    13:31 are you kidding me? Anna Beth is supposed to be ahead of everyone else so obviously she’s gonna realize it’s Medusa. Most people who realize they’re from she’s from the their world once they see the statues so of course she’s gonna realize that. Also, there are only 8 episodes for the first season. Why are you wanting EVERYTHING that happened in the book to happen in the show. Rick Riordon either made or approved of these changes himself and he’s the one who knows the characters best so why don’t you just follow what he thinks is best? Ridiculous

    If I am honest, I like that you're seeing this show with your sister, aside from her remembering more the book so that gives a feeling to the reaction, it accentuates the reaction due to your bond. I liked very much your alone reaction domi e., but for example, imagine your Percy Jackson reaction is a delicious steak, but when you put sauce(your sister with you), it's even more nice on flavour!
    Also, I think that the change of Medusa(Anabeth already knowing and her seeming "nice") is good, Anabeth is smart and Medusa has a grudge to her mother and can kill with her sight alone; and the seeming nice/"survivor" story helps to show that she isn't like she makes you think (the monster statues on the front and the story), she is a monster (saying to transform Grover and Anabeth, trying at the second killing them all and the basement full of innocent people).
    P.D.: Sorry for the long comment, hahaha.

    I think that so much earlier on is changing from the book is because of hindsight. Things that should have been done sooner, things that didn't make the most sense in the book things that weren't given the proper amount of time. While I do have a few grips about the show, a vast majority of it has honestly been an improvement from the books.

    The story is more that Medusa was a priestess or Athena and was graped by Poseidon.

    (intended to be constructive criticism btw) I feel that book readers (which I am too) shouldn’t expect the show to be a 1:1 adaptation. Uncle Rick and the show writers *needed* to make changes because 1st-person prose *can’t* be directly translated into a 3rd-person visual medium. The show’s already stayed more true to the book than the movie did, and we should appreciate creative freedom (“They revealed it earlier. Could there be a different twist?”) rather than criticize it (“It’s *supposed* to be revealed later. They *shouldn’t* have changed it.”)

    • @marcusolarte3764
      @marcusolarte3764 7 месяцев назад +1

      For example, they likely changed the Medusa part of the story to: (1) deliver exposition quickly for a limited episode runtime, (2) create a foil for Annabeth’s character development, and (3) maintain the theme of *humanizing* the Olympian gods as flawed people rather than righteous deities. These changes make a lot of sense from a screenplay perspective, and I think that it’ll make the watching experience more enjoyable when book readers acknowledge these creative decisions (even if you don’t initially understand it) instead setting themselves up for disappointment from the get-go.

    mythical medusa was a SA victim too, by poseidon. Rick is the one who changed it, technically. I think the show making it a little more ambiguous is a pretty safe choice while still getting away from the regrettable inaccuracy of the book portrayal. Obviously i would have preferred a harder commitment but it's a balancing act. I definitely like how it plays with the idea of being a monster which is obviously so central to PJO

    • @queenidragon4489
      @queenidragon4489 7 месяцев назад +4

      I believe it's Ovid's version that explicitly states that it was SA while others lean more towards the seduced version but with ancient Greece they don't exactly care about those sort of things

  • @jakobitheprophet418

    The changes for the Medusa story, makes sense if for not looking at it from the book perspective! Annabeth who is the daughter of the goddess of wisdom Athena! Who in the show is described of being six step ahead of everything, would immediately spot that her, Percy and Grover! Had entered in the lair of Medusa.

    As someone who was first introduced to Lin with His Dark Materials rather than his musicals, I don't understand it. Maybe it's because I generally avoid musicals altogether? 😅
    Since it had been over a week for me, I didn't remember Gabe's face right away either, but it was so funny once I caught it.

    I've red the book too so I know there are changes. I know the show is like the little brother/sister of the show, it is not a copy. Some things work in the book but would be ridiculous/illogical on screen. I want this show to have an impact on new generations and people to read Rick Riordan's books so I am praying for it to be successful.
    If you watch the show with this in mind, you will enjoy it better. Because if your reaction is only a list of "in the book, it was like this..." "in the book they don't use this name" etc... there will be no feelings in it and you won't see the show as it is. Sometimes, you even speak about the book without pausing the video so you are not listening.
    Or maybe watch the show first, make your list of differences and watch it later with your sister to let room for her genuine reaction ? It 's fun to look if the show manages to interest her, gives her emotions... As a book-reader, I enjoy more the show on a second watch as I am very stressed on the first watch...
    Sorry for my ranting, I just want to help...
    Trust Rick Riordan, he is an amazing writer and so far, he took very good decisions for the show and even tried new perspectives on his own characters. I feel he takes his stories serioulsy. I am just sad Disney didn't give him more episodes and time for the first book. He has to cut things to fit in the short 8 episodes. But he still manage to develop characters in this very short amount of time.
    I was impressed by Medusa and our trio's developpement during this episode. The pace is improving. It is beautiful to watch, the music too, the acting... I don't feel betrayed from the book, Anabeth is perfectly in character, intelligent. Percy is a little naive, Grover is just so cute.
    Looking forward for the next episode !

    actually i think they’re trying to go for the myth where medusa was raped, and i think that’s so much more important to bring to screen. like the fact that even gods would blame the victim instead of the abuser?
