    So, in this episode, Grover beat a god with empathy, and Annabeth beat(?) a god with reason. Percy's got some accomplished friends!

      The shows doing such a good job at building up Grover and Annabeth! So happy with how they feel just as important as Percy without having as much screen time. Also, can't wait for Percy to start getting some accomplishments under his belt when it comes to the Gods, specifically the Ares fight!!

    I love how they're able to keep even us book readers on edge about stuff. It's not just a copy paste, they are willing to mix things up and, dare I say, improve on the source material. Gods know how much Grover and Annabeth grew bc of that being done on the show (understandable as in the books we are always inside Percy's mind). I think they are doing an excellent job of making us feel connected with the trio. That's the most important thing to do rn, since if we get more seasons, they'll be splitting up for a while. Also, it makes the regular audience who doesn't know the books care more abt them.
    I gotta say I did get some spoilers abt things being different bc I knew of Hephaestus and Hermes being casted beforehand. I'm really curious about how they're gonna make the Cassino scene last a whole episode, because honestly even though it is iconic, it's also very short and has no purpose to the story other than to delay them on their quest. Hoping the Hermes thing spices things up!

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад +2

      Completely agree, all the changes they've made so far have only helped to build the character or simply due to the budget and run time, so happy that even people who know the story can watch this and still be suprised by stuff, goes to show Rick put so much thought and care into this to appeal to both a new audience and the returning one.
      With the Casino, I'm guessing we'll have a good chunk of the episode in the truck with Percy being Lord of Horses and getting the Iris Message thing with the latter half of the episode actually being about the Casino. For me, all they have to do is show how luxurious the Casino is and how enticing it can be while adding to the fear factor of what happens when you get lost in it. Hermes being there is a complete wild card to me so I have no clue how his involvement will affect things.

  • @Biancaleigh693

    I think it's clever how they save there budget by implying stuff without showing it. It's smart

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад +12

      Same, there have been so many instences now with how they've done this so creatively, Medusa being killed while invisible has got to be my favourite so far. I can only imagine what would happen if they got a bigger budget but I'd also be worried we would lose out on the creativity that comes with working around a smaller one.

    honestly the actor did so much with his face/eye acting that it would be a shame to add fire to it. he might lose that great expression.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад +7

      I know!! Right now I think they should let the actor keep doing it without the fire cause he just pulls it off so well, but maybe as like a nod to the book or something they could add a subtle fire effect under his sunglasses when he has them on which wouldn't take away from his performance.

    This episode was amazing, Percabeth had me losing my mind. I was in tears for most of the second half, I couldn’t see for a hot minute😂 These kids’ acting skills improve every episode. Their mannerisms, the looks in their eyes, their facial expressions?! It’s all so good!!! And Grover manipulating Ares was awesome, I thought he was genuinely a fan, ngl.
    I honestly forgot about the mechanical spiders, but yeah, I think they can easily work in that fear in the future when they have a bigger budget. I’m so excited for the Lotus Casino next week!!!!

      If they keep this chemistry up I know I'm going to get very emotional as this show goes on and we get more of this 😂 Their acting is so impressive, they really are showing off how right Rick was for chosing them, Grover was SO GOOD! I genuinely believed he was a fan as well with how he explained it 😂 I'll be so happy if he's managed to figure it all out after that.
      Kinda hoping they can add like a Spider scaring Annabeth in the truck next episode but it's the kind of thing they could put anywhere 😂 The Casino ep is gonna be awesome, can't wait to see what Hermes' involvement is cause seeing him there completely threw me off!!

      I hope they do, too, that could be easy to just slip in, especially since it’s a nasty truck, there could easily be a spider in there. I can’t wait! I heard people saying it was going to be a whole musical episode, which I don’t think it’s fully a musical episode, but since Lin AND Joe Tracz from the Lightning Thief Musical are involved in the episode, I’m expecting a masterpiece

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад +3

      I just imagine adding thousands of tiny mechanical spiders to chase them would be way too budget heavy especially when we haven't seen Olympus or Hades yet where most of the Budget will be used, hopefully though they can be used in future seasons to set up Arachne, and Edge was amazing!! Now I want so many more Ares scenes just to get more moments with him 😂

    I am SO GLAD they didn't use the spiders. I didn't want to watch a paralyzed, shreiking Annabeth. Ugh. Rick has said he's relishing the opportunity to redo his 20-year-old work, and IMHO it's a better, more intense and heart-tugging story.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад

      I do like that he's going back to re-do some of the lacking parts of the story but for me, the Annabeth and Spiders thing was one of my favourite parts of her character which helped me identify with her so much, I hate spiders in general so seeing a character hate them too was great but it's so much more than that. Annabeth is such a strong and amazing character right from the get-go, she's so competent and right now her only flaw is how she viewed her Mother, which she's now realised was wrong. Having her be this amazing and then we see this thing that completely freezes her humanises her, plus Annabeth has always been extreme whether it be in a positive way with her smarts or a negative way with her fears so her reaction to it made sense. The story it sets up with Arachne is pivotal to the Heros of Olympus story so if there going to adapt that they'll have to set it up at some point, to ignore it completely would be a big disservice to her character with how much development it gives her.

    I think one of the reasons Riordan changed this section from the book is because of a specific continuity error. Buuuut, I’m not sure (they might commit the same error later). The error is that Grover is supposed to fly away to Zeus if he says, “Maia.” In this section of the book he flies multiple times to try to save Percy and Annabeth while they’re trapped in Hephaestus’ web, but he shouldn’t have been able to return to planet earth and control the shoes.
    Here, they just traded one myth of Hephaestus for another and gave Grover a huge main role, showing he deserves to be the next Pan.

    • @heyitsmira17
      @heyitsmira17 6 месяцев назад +5

      The shoes work perfectly fine on the surface. It is only in the Underworld that they bring the wearer down to Tartarus. The same type of magic used to make the bold appear in the backpack. Luke thought Percy was going to wear the shoes and Ares gave Percy the backpack, that would lead the master bolt to Chronos

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад +1

      Not sure that's quite right with the shoes, Percy simply couldn't wear them cause Zeus had a vendetta against only him so Grover was free to wear them without harm, but of course, they were cursed to pull the wearer to Tartarus when close, like in the book Grover wore them a lot in this part and with Medusa so him flying off the Zeus doesn't sound quite right if there were two instances of them not going that.

    • @mrs.manrique7411
      @mrs.manrique7411 6 месяцев назад

      @@benspillerah, yes, I totally forgot about that. I must’ve merged “Zeus will strike you down in the air” with Luke’s gift. Welp, even without that, the change is nicer for various reasons. For tv purposes, intimacy/emotions is more important than spectacle and embarrassment and fear. New viewers have to become attached to the characters before crazier/sillier stuff can happen to them.

    I think the fear of spiders is something they are going to keep but maybe for a later episode because it really could happen anywhere. I preferred this change if I’m honest. More emotion and still such a character building moment for Annabeth

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah, having it focus on the relationship between Percy and Annabeth was definitely the right call in retrospect, with this being a new show they need to define the most important parts to where this will go quickly so starting a storyline that gets concluded in Heros of Olympus now just doesn't make sense. Though I do think they could do a miner set-up in the next episode with Annabeth finding a spider in the truck or something and having like one line of her saying she doesn't like them 😂

  • @kiml.1565
    @kiml.1565 6 месяцев назад +1

    My interpretation of the "There is no fear in you" line isn't that Annabeth fears nothing at all, but rather that she isn't at all afraid of Ares specifically. I think there's still plenty of room for an irrational fear of spiders to show up in the future, but personally I never considered that a huge character moment. I think the show is focusing on Annabeth's character growing as a result of realizing that Olympus isn't as great as she thought it was (a theme of almost all the show's major changes) and coming to care for Percy as someone who is more genuine than that, so I don't think we'll see a lot of character development via spiders. Overall I love the changes that the show made from the book in this episode -- the more personal and emotional crisis that Percy and Annabeth face, the appearance of Hephaestus and the again underlining that the way the gods do things kinda sucks, and Grover playing Ares to get information out of him. And non-book-readers have told me that they loved this episode, so I think it's working on that level too.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah, the change is definitely to back up the theme about the Gods being awful and having the kids realise it, to me this scene was the first time we saw this super smart, competent character get shut down exposing a huge weakness that she'd have to work through and it gave her so much opportunity for development while humanising her, though I do like that they focused on her development being about recognizing who her mother truly is so she can relate more with Percy. Still hoping that in the next episode in the truck, she might see a Spider and say she doesn't like them or something 😂

    Totally agree about the budget and run time. I find it hurts the action scenes as well. Percy’s powers/any water powers needs a high budget to look good so it’s a shame that they cut away from the action every time

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  6 месяцев назад

      I'm assuming we might get one good water power scene at the end but I do like how they've been hiding his powers with him not understanding so the viewer doesn't understand, but as he gets more confident with this he's gonna need to have a lot of full scenes with his powers which will definitely need a bigger budget.
