Glad to see people who actually read the books reacting to the series. Most of the people reacting to it that I’ve seen so far have only seen the 2010 movie and think this is an adaptation of that and don’t even know about the books 😭😭
I actually don’t mind the change in Sally. I think they had to show very quickly that sally doesn’t like or respect Gabe and that she is there by her choice for some reason (which we find out later). I think her moment in the rain was a moment to get away from everything before the shit hits the fan and she has to send her son away (and the rain might remind her of Percy’s dad). Overall it seems like they’re showing a little more what it must have been like for sally to hold all the weight and responsibility of keeping Percy’s secret and keeping him safe all on her own.
literally!! sally feels so much more…complex? especially getting to see her through the lens of percy: her oddly sitting in the rain, tolerating gabe yet not letting him run over her, crying when percy woke up in the car, etc. just one of the characters im most excited to see develop as the series continues
i totally agree, i'm enjoying the slight changes they are making to her character, I think it sets her story and personality up really well for people who maybe havent read the books, or havent for a long time. I do think they should have made gabe look and act grosser though, haha
Rick Riordan himself made all the changes in this, this is how HE envisioned it should be adapted into video format. I also feel some changes are meh not a huge fan of grover betraying percy to get him expelled. But this isn't supposed to be the book copied onto screen it's still an adaptation that is meant for 8 episodes a book.

Agreed, I think you set yourself up to fail really, if you keep comparing everything to the source material, the best way to enjoy any adaptation is to let go of the desire of wanting everything to be a carbon copy..it´s hard, but it can be done and makes the experience much more fun ...also, if you haven´t read the book just watch the show/ movie first, that also helps 😅
My only issue was Gabe he was way more ruthless in the book to sally, but I figured they wanted to keep it a little light hearted but I do think that was important to keep in, however compared to the 2 eps this is minuscule and i’m so glad they did not make Percy kill the minotaur with Riptide because him killing it with his bare hands showed how physically strong a demigod is.
My thoughts exactly. I mean spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't read book one, but Gabe is an abusive douche. Their relationship is so abusive that Sally has no issue turning him into a freaking statue by the end of book one. This Gabe is a bit of a prick too, but he doesn't seem like a terrible person overall. It instead seems more like a mutually benefitial relationship where he gets to bum around and drink beer while Sally get a smelly bloke to mask Percy's scent.
I agree. Gabe needs to be an abusive prick or I really can't get behind Sally just murdering him at the end of book one. With this version of Gabe so far, he is just a bum. Like kick him to the curb yes, but turn him to stone no.

In the books Sally is very soft spoken, barely changes her tone even when she's being pushed around by Gabe. Which is a real big part of why we readers symphatize so much for her..

@@chaotic7cam In all fairness, in the original book, PERCY HIMSELF didn’t find out the full truth/extent of how Gabe treated his mom until closer to the end. So it might not be a stretch to have Gabe’s full depravity (or whatever word you think is more appropriate) be revealed closer to the end of the season (possibly even in the final episode).

Back then, an abused spouse appeasing her abuser by saying, 'Oh, just let us go on this trip, I'll make you bean dip with the works!', like what Sally said in the book, might have seemed sound, but I think in a post-#MeToo world - which I know was about sexual abuse specifically - it does seem rather icky to have the abused roll over like that and show her belly, so to speak. Sally may have got with Gabe to keep Percy safe, but that doesn't mean she has to stand for his shit. She can do both: help Percy and stand up to Gabe. Further reason to do the latter would be because she is scared of him deep down, since he hits her. But of course, fear naturally brings the fight response in some people over flight. Sally being girlboss makes sense.

My one nitpick thing is I wish they'd given Annabeth's actress some grey contact lenses just because Annabeth's grey eyes are important to her because they remind her of her mother. But I don't know the morality of putting child actors in prosthetics though, so I digress.
I've only read the books The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters like once or twice years ago back in middle school and then I saw the movie adaptation in theaters when it came out 2010 when I was 16 and I thought the movie was awesome and I thought all the other book fans thought so too but it wasn't until years later when I found out Oh No the book fans do not like the movie they hate the movie with a passion 😂😂, so I'm glad this TV show exists so we can have a more faithful adaptation and this was a damn great adaptation from what I've seen so far 🤘🔥
When Sally asked Grover to swear to protect Percy, I really wanted her to let him swear on the River Styx. Because swearing on the River Styx is a huge deal as it is a unbreakable oath and promise, even gods honor it. Which would have made the stakes higher in the series
No, that would honestly have been a bit cruel, especially given that Grover's a child and Sally's a mother. She wouldn't have wanted to risk placing hardship on Grover like that. She knew the two are best friends, and that they'd look after each other.

Exactly. People need to understand that not everything will be the same. Also, the story is from Percy’s POV. The is not. Everything they’ve changed, I’ve understood and can see why. They only have 8 episodes. You have to cut somethings and leave others. People are mad it going to fast but you could spend the first two episodes just at home, Yancy and the cabin. You don’t have the time for that. If they went ahead and changed major things, then yeah I’d be upset. The show is really good. People have to remember that the show is made for a younger audience. Can’t wait for the whole season

We don’t have Percy’s internal monologue so Rick had to show some thing’s differently.. also the books have been out since the early 2000s real fans have read it over and over again so making a carbon copy just wouldn’t be interesting

I really think the first episode could potentially be the worst of the show (not saying it's bad, more saying everything is up from here potentially.) It has sooo much set up to do and episode 1 and 2 are 40% of the first book... that's so much to cover. After these 2 it will slow down and not feel as rushed (especially aware of this cause I'm watching it with a friend who knows nothing about the books or movies before and it felt a bit rushed to her.) Really not bad for a difficult start.
It's better to watch it without always comparing everything to the books. "In the books" this, "in the books" that That's what you'll end up saying for the rest of the show.

I agree with Sabrina: it's not like the book. The problem is that they have changed some important stuff. An example is Gabe's smell, where is it? It's very important. And I can imagine the Minotaur waiting for Sally to greet Percy and ask Grover to swear (she forget to ask to swear on Styx). The fight vs Doods it's very weak and Chiron gave him a pen like "I don't know what to do, just take a pen". Gabe is not real Gabe, Sally is showing her strong attitude to soon and it ruins the character. And what about Grover selling Percy with the headmaster? C'mon, it's very cheap! And why is Sally sitting under the rain? My personal opinion is that this series it's good to the ones that are new to Percy Jackson and, unfortunately, not very good for book's fans. As a book lover I was so disappointed. It’s like they took away everything that reeled me in in the first few chapters and threw it away. I thought it would be more faithful and canon-based since it’s a TV show with more time, but no! I mean what even was that scene with Mrs. Dodds? The freaking movie did that better. Then Grover being a snitch. Completely doing away with the bus scene and the old ladies/the fates. Just so many unnecessary and infuriating changes I could barely get through the first episode.
i really liked these episodes anyway but i understand how they felt kind of rushed. i think the pacing will get better now that we are at camp, they needed to fit the first chapters all in one thing. also grover was a snitch 'cause he had to keep percy believing mrs. dodds didn't exist. obviously it made percy upset but i don't think it's a deviation from his character and what he was supposed to do

Love the reaction but I think it’s best if we come in and not compare the books to the show because of course it might not be as outstanding as the books but just base it on the quality of the show itself but amazing hearing y’all’s side of what yall think

I really think the first episode could potentially be the worst of the show (not saying it's bad, more saying everything is up from here potentially.) It has sooo much set up to do and episode 1 and 2 are 40% of the first book... that's so much to cover. After these 2 it will slow down and not feel as rushed (especially aware of this cause I'm watching it with a friend who knows nothing about the books or movies before and it felt a bit rushed to her.)

I like it a hundred percent better than the first movie, but they still have the tone just a little off, especially the treacly stuff with Sally.
I agree with Sabrina: it's not like the book. The problem is that they have changed some important stuff. An example is Gabe's smell, where is it? It's very important. And I can imagine the Minotaur waiting for Sally to greet Percy and ask Grover to swear (she forget to ask to swear on Styx). The fight vs Doods it's very weak and Chiron gave him a pen like "I don't know what to do, just take a pen". Gabe is not real Gabe, Sally is showing her strong attitude to soon and it ruins the character. And what about Grover selling Percy with the headmaster? C'mon, it's very cheap! And why is Sally sitting under the rain? My personal opinion is that this series it's good to the ones that are new to Percy Jackson and, unfortunately, not very good for book's fans. As a book lover I was so disappointed. It’s like they took away everything that reeled me in in the first few chapters and threw it away. I thought it would be more faithful and canon-based since it’s a TV show with more time, but no! I mean what even was that scene with Mrs. Dodds? The freaking movie did that better. Then Grover being a snitch. Completely doing away with the bus scene and the old ladies/the fates. Just so many unnecessary and infuriating changes I could barely get through the first episode.
i really liked these episodes anyway but i understand how they felt kind of rushed. i think the pacing will get better now that we are at camp, they needed to fit the first chapters all in one thing. also grover was a snitch 'cause he had to keep percy believing mrs. dodds didn't exist. obviously it made percy upset but i don't think it's a deviation from his character and what he was supposed to do

THIS new percy show is TRASH... DID you read the books? The characters look NOTHING like they are described in the books just TERRIBLE CASTING it looks bad on screen dont waste your time if your a REAL fan of the original story and normal characters they COULD have stuck to the books description but of course disney got involved with an AGENDA and ruined it Cant we just get back to regular movies that stick to the story we know
