  • This is the first time I've ever seen Percy Jackson. I LOVED IT. I'm still really new to reactions, but I knew I wanted to do a reaction series to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, because now felt like a great time to start this adventure that so many people have been in love with for years (not to0 different from my own One Piece journey as well). I hope you enjoy this reaction to episode 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians! More to come!

I do think after the 3 episodes I've seen so far, I'll likely be getting the first book after the season is over and checking it out.
I remember the feeling I had in college walking out of the theater after seeing Eragon, and it was interesting how all my friends that had never seen it said it was cool, like a fantasy Star Wars, and I just couldn't get over how much it deviated from the book at almost every turn. So I'm certainly familiar with what happens when you are "book first" and seeing a beloved story through another medium.
I appreciate that you checked out the reaction! I always try to look for things that I can appreciate and enjoy, and I'll admit, it's a lot easier to do being wholly unfamiliar with a story, so I'm especially grateful to be checking this show out along with everyone else!

11.45 Yess! It really is, things happen so quickly in the books too. It's one of the most special things about reading Percy. He does not catch any breath till the whole plot ends, there's no time for him to process what's happening or for us. This is what being a demigod is, you'll never stop cause monsters never gonna end so you have to find a way to have fun while you're on the way. Isn't it like this in life? We've got one life and time won't gonna stop for us to breathe or find something joyful. We're just doing it in between all the good and bad things happening 💙

    • @Noxiddar

I actually really love that. Not every story benefits from a pace like that, but this story has the voice of a gifted storyteller, and why I really drive home the fact that it feels like I'm watching an author's story come to life, as opposed to a room full of writers making decisions by committee.
It's been a delightfully wild ride, and I can't wait to see where it takes me next!
Have a wonderful 2024 that I hope is equally as wild as this story (but with less attempts on your life by mythological beasts...unless you want that!)

I was also just thinking earlier today how great of a creative landscape Greek Mythology is. Not just from the gods and demi-gods, but also the plethora of creatures, monsters, and all other manner of otherworldly denizens. It's such a playground, not just visually, but also for the established lore each facet contains. It's really good fun. I'm enjoying this quite a lot!

I hope they get to tell more than just book 1 and 2. Because each book gets better and better. Hoping it keeps going to completion of at least the first series. Rick Riodan expanded his universe with other series and continuing Percy's story in alternate sagas of books. As well as making new characters with different mythos all connected in one Universe.
One of which being Annabeth's cousin who is a child of a Norse God.
He also did a series on Egyptian myth. All connected in the Riodan-verse as some call it.

This the only reaction I like (so far) where reactor did not read the books previously. After watching a few non-reader reactions, I started switching videos as soon as reactors announced that they didn’t read the book. You’ve made great comments! Very insightful. My suggestion is that after you watch the first season, read the first book/listen to the audibles. THEN, watch the series again. Also, find an interview of why Rick Riordan wrote the books.

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  7 месяцев назад +1

This is incredible praise, thank you!
I wonder if my theater background, as well as being an aspiring author (self-published novella), helps with insight into all things related to story.
But really, the truth is that I always go into my reactions, looking for things to appreciate about them. It's one thing to state how an experience makes you feel. It's just a little more to say why it is that you feel it.
These are all incredible suggestions that I intend to follow through on! I really want to read first after season 1 so I can hear the author's voice tell the story, and then I'd absolutely love to find an interview and react to what went into crafting the story. I'd probably have a lot to say since I work as a teacher with special needs students.
I've heard a thing or two about this Percy Jackson back in my day, but it is so invigorating and exciting to take this adventure and be able to share in the experiences with a passionate community of readers and fans of Rick Riordan such as yourself.
Thank you for making the last moments of my 2023 so special (11:42 PM as I write this)!

I didn’t read the books. The premise is kind of ridiculous (Greek gods in North America etc.) But, I did watch an interview of the author. His son had ADHD and dyslexia. And, he used to tell his son bedtime stories about the Greek mythology. When he ran out of stories, he made up stories, which eventually became the books. I think that is a beautiful thing.

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  7 месяцев назад +9

That is a really sweet story.
I wouldn't say the premise is ridiculous, per say. But it is definitely the surrealist escapist fantasy that is perfect for a young kid in North America to be sold.
As an adult, and because I've probably watched too much Ancient Aliens, I see the Greek gods as being the great influences of mankind, it makes sense that their influence would run deep in The United States, a country which shapes (for better or worse) a lot of the influence of the rest of the world.
It seems like Olympus, and the veil between worlds is more of an interdimensional rift between realities, complete with interdimensional travel, kind of how Episode 3 ended by taking an elevator ride to the 600th floor of the Empire State Building to arrive at Mount Olympus.
If the sky is Zeus' domain, then he probably wouldn't be limited to the airspace of Greece. 🤣
I'm sure someone in the ancient world of Greece posited the ridiculous notion that the gods seemed only concerned with Greece and its islands. And I'm sure some wiseguy like me probably gave a similar answer too.
And long after us, there will be another round of discussion similar to this.
That is the nature of stories. The need for Mythology. The love for fantasy.
      Have a Happy New Year!

That's incredible! I think the only author I've ever read to date who I could finish a novel in one setting is James Patterson. His patented style of 1.5-3 pages for chapters makes it so hard to stop because "one more chapter is only a few more minutes!"

@@Noxiddar Very well put. I've gotten into One Piece only last year (and have only managed to catch up recently). But it's certainly a journey of grandness and without spoilers, it only deepens with each arc. Something that Percy Jackson shares with it.
I discovered Percy Jackson when I was younger, and the adventure aspect of it kept me fasnicated to no end. It even set me into a pit of exploring Greek mythology. And finding One Piece, recently has managed to give me the same feelings as I had, when I first read the series. Both series now hold a special place in my heart. I'm sure as a writer you'll enjoy the later world building in Percy Jackson and One Piece too.
I think the largest similary between the two is that both creators truly write with passion. And as an aspiring writer, it's something I can only admire.
Regardless, I'm still watching your reactions and will definitely be checking out your One Piece reactions. I hope you enjoy both journeys.

@@ashesyebs4404 I hope you enjoy both! I sprinkle in a lot of "story time" memories from my time living in Japan throughout most of the reactions.
This entire reaction journey for me has (even though I'm posting them on RUclips and sharing them with others) been a rather personal journey for me. My hope is that the stories and memories I've made of my time in Japan, or the thoughts of where I was at the time I first learned about something can be contained like a scrapbook I can look back on and be proud of.
It's been such a fulfilling venture so far, and I've barely even started!

I do think my plan with Percy Jackson is to finish reacting to season 1, review season 1, read book one, and then react to some interviews with Rick Riordan.
It's possibly backwards, but I find that getting to the book last helps me appreciate it so much more.
It's like layers of archeology. The surface (show) contains some findings, and then beneath that there is a hidden depth of discoveries (books) with even more to find, and the layer beneath that (interviews) helps create the cycle that leads back to my first discovery on the surface.
From that point, I may read more of the books before season 2, or I may keep the cycle of appreciation going and patiently wait.
2024 is going to be a big year for adventure. I can feel it!

Oh, I wouldn't say that was COMPLETELY true.
I'd known I was going to love this from the trailers, and MORE importantly from the people that have fallen in love with the books. It's interesting to me because a lot of the people I've met that are fans of the books are... I wouldn't say closeted about it, but certainly covet and cherish it and keep it largely to themselves. But if I ever point out a display or something, there is a steady stream of passion about how much they love the Percy Jackson books. Never really spoilers, just focused passion for something they love.
That's powerful magic, and hard to ignore. So here I am. I am indeed uncertain of what comes next, but I full well know like Percy in the museum, I am standing before something so special, and bigger than myself in so many ways. It has been a delight over these few short days to see the community have a place and a platform to bring that passion forward.

One of my favorite parts of this episode is how well they show Percy and his mom get along, by the end of the episode you really feel the relationship
Unrelated but the bag was blue candy, I know the deeper meaning, but I don't know if the series will touch on it, so I won't spoil it for now, I think it's a nice touch that you can tell the small gift meant something to him, without even knowing why

@@Noxiddar Percy Jackson stood out for not being as reverant to the gods as the others and called them out on their mistreatment of their kids quite a bit. He's always been described as sarcastic and mouthing off. I think a part of that does come from having a good relationship with his non-godly parent, something that not all the demigods share. He's not as desperate for a connection with his father as much as some others(even though he still wants some). Like annabeth in ep 3 defending her mother with a fierceness but not having a real connection with her. A lot of the demigods are orphans or don't have a good relationship with their parent.
