    The level of gaslighting is incredible in the first episode

    I love how most people who watched the movies never say how much they love it or the lore behind it, most ppl just go “well Alexandria or Logan were in it and they were my childhood crushes so the movies were great”😂😂

    Sally puts up with Gabe because he is smells so human that it masks the smell of Percy to the monsters. Also Sally is one of the few mortals that can see through the mist, which is why she can see the minotaur

    It is a good thing that you don't remember much of the movie because the story is almost completely different.

    The Mist is the force that obscures the mythological world from the mortal world. So all of this does technically take place in the "real world." The things exist and even mortals can interact with them, but the Mist makes them see something else, or think it's something else. In some cases, the Mist even modifies their memories, like we see with Nancy Bobofit. She addresses Mrs. Dodds by name when she's teasing Percy in the museum, then later has no recollection of Mrs. Dodds ever having existed. Think of the bronze rhino in the very beginning. The Mist made it look like a trash truck to mortals, even to Percy, because demigods are still half mortal and the Mist can screw with them sometimes, too.

    • @HarryAllen9
      @HarryAllen9  5 месяцев назад +10

      Wait thats so cool that it interferes with them cause they're half human! Didn't even think about that side of things. And okay im ngl the Rhino confused me when I went to edit cause I was like "wait... was it actually there?" so thank you for the explanation!

      yeah, i think the mist works like 50% of the time to shield young demigods from discovering the truth (because if they learn who they are, they're easier for monsters to find) but as they get older/are faced with the reality of the mythological world, it becomes less effective? i could be wrong but that's kinda how i took it in the books. *mild spoiler ahead potentially for smth that happens in one of the later books in regards to the way the mist works*

      .
      i do believe we see i think one or two mythological creatures/demigods actually manipulate the mist around other demigods to make them see things the way mortals do.

      @@leilanyx I'm working on a reread, so I'll try to look out for some more clues, but all that sounds like what I remember. I vaguely remember something about a badge? But that might be bad aftertaste from the movie. I guess I'll find out!

    I looove this reaction, especially your empathy and understanding of Percy and his feelings of 'otherness'. I read the books as an insecure teenager who always felt like the odd one out and related to him heavily
    The author of the books, Rick Riordan, actually came up with the story for the Percy Jackson & The Olympians books to help his son, who has dyslexia and ADHD, feel less bad about his learning difficulties. This is what he wrote about the first book in his blog in 2005: *"-- the book remains a very personal story from a father to a son. Like the Greek stories of old, The Lightning Thief is an attempt to explain a natural phenomenon - a myth to help my son make sense of who he is."*
    I'm in my mid 20s now but this honestly still makes me emotional every time I think about it
    I hope you enjoy the show!! I'll be tuning in for future reactions 💫

    Gabe was definitely very abusive in the books, i understand why they toned it down a bit bc it is Disney, but if you really pay attention you can still pick up on his manipulative and emotionally abusive behaviors such as answering Sally's phone, etc.

    • @HarryAllen9
      @HarryAllen9  5 месяцев назад +7

      Oh for sure, I think cause I was expecting actual anger and all that it just took me by surprise. Like you said tho, it would have been very jarring as a disney show to have someone be THAT horrible considering the target audience.

    • @julienaruse1721
      @julienaruse1721 5 месяцев назад +4

      And for a first episode, it would have been very dark with the gaslighting, anxiety etc...

    • @jonathangoodwin5609
      @jonathangoodwin5609 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, but he's also more of a pushover. Unlike in the books, he just doesn't feel threatening and Sally is clearly the one with all the authority in this relationship.

  • @Timister0902

    I love how much you picked up on the interactions between Sally and Percy, it's probly my favorite part of the episode. It's not some in your face interaction, where it's just outright telling you that they get along well, it's small details every few minutes.
    Theres the beginning scene with baby Percy in the museum (Thats a different actor btw, not special effects, quite cool they found that kid). Theres also the moment he gets home, Percy immediately wants to find his mom and then immediately gives a bear hug. The moment in the car where they race out as a game. Then the shoulder touch gotchya where they both just smile it off. And lastly the part you noticed, Sally is visibly depressed while at the cabin, knowing she's about to say goodbye to her son, possibly forever, at this point she doesn't actually know if she will see him again.
    It just fits so well. Also, I think that making Grover swear protection is just for Sally's sake, she wants to do everything she can to ensure her kid is safe. (I am not a book nerd, I don't actually know if theres some unkown Satyr clause)

    Yesss so excited you are reacting to this! It is really great so far! So glad the author, Rick, was able to be involved this time. You can really tell his influence is there, it's a great adaptation of his original story!

    Ahhh I’m so excited for you to be watching this. I really enjoy your reaction because you’re great at considering every characters perspective and understanding their motives. Really intrigued to see what you think of it; this was my childhood growing up and I love to see new people react to it. Interesting fact: The author, Rick Riordan, actually started this as a bedtime story to his son, who has adhd and dyslexia. He wanted to create a main character with those same disabilities and the beloved Percy Jackson was born.

    popped back on to your channel for the first time in a few months to see you're reacting to this show! very excited for this. the percy jackson series has been a long time favourite since i was about eight years old (i'm 21 now) and it's probably been my most conisistent obsession since thanks to my 'tism, lmao. when i heard about this show i was genuinely so excited - after the godawful movies (in terms of an adaptation and in general- rick riordan himself despises the movies) i needed a GOOD adaptation which actually involved and respected the author and kept the heart of the source material, and so far i think this has done that!
    i like the few changes and imrpovements rick has made to the story so far. it adds something new for book fans to be surprised by and i genuinely think it's made a beter story so far. anyway - excited for your reactions! (don't try and remember the movies, lol, they're nothing like the books or the show)

    I love the show I don't mind the changes they made so far except for Gabe. I think the only thing the movie did right ironically is Gabe, his character was written and acted well. He was exactly how he was in the book also I like how his character was handle in the end because IRONICALLY having Percy left something in the fridge with a note to Gabe was the most Percy thing Logan's Percy had done in the entire film.

    Eyo! Whazdiz... Unexpected video/series. Love that you're doing it.
    Few things Harry.
    The PJO fandom will burn you at the steak for saying you like the movies (no really, you don't like the movies. The author of the franchise doesn't like the movies, with a passion.) The general consensus is to pretend they never existed.
    The plot will feel a bit overwhelming if you don't have at least a beginner level understanding of Greek mythology and/or the books. (Trust me, the movies give you nothing) but you have the luxury of comment sections so, I guess you'll be fine
    On the ep:
    Gabe (stepdad) is an abusive asshole everywhere. In the series it is verrry subtle. In the books its not.
    The mum (Sally) is sitting in the rain because rain (natural water) makes her feel close to Poseidon.
    There is a reason Sally is married to Gabe. I don't know if the show will tell you later. So i won't now.
    The point about monsters and why they do what they do, Are they "bad" because they're "monsters" we'll visit again and again.
    Looking forward to future eps. Cheers.
    Edit: Watch out for book spoilers. whether in comments or when looking things up. :)

      Okay thank you, to be clear to EVERYONE 😂 I have not seen the movies since I was a kid so when I say I loved them as a kid, I mean JUST that.
      Also I was definately overwhelmed with lore however a lovely commenter on patreon gave me a breakdown on all of the Gods and their relations to eachother + a lil background so I am gonna using that a LOT dw.
      Thank you for the warning about spoilers! I will keep my eye on comments before just zooming through them

    I really like this show. For some reason though, you will find that it sometimes cuts to black for no reason, or otherwise avoids using its effects when it really could. A couple times I felt a bit disappointed cuz it just skipped something cool rather than show the full thing.

    it’s good you don’t remember the movies that well, they’re decent movies but TERRIBLE adaptations of the books, whereas this show is a great show in of itself AND a great adaption

    • @annabelledrake2027

      on the topic of gabe, he is actually abusive, however percy just isn’t aware at this point. It’s realistic. Percy is a “troubled” kid, and he’s 12, he’s not a baby, gabe knows that if percy knew he was abusive, he wouldn’t let it slide. Gabe may be an adult but he still doesn’t want to physically fight percy, percy is an athletic kid. So for the weekends here and there that percy is home from boarding school, gabe tries to make percy like him and get on his good side, which obviously fails because gabe is a douche.

    I loved your reaction! I originally watched the first film before I started to read the books. On their own the movies were OK but compared to the books, the books were way better. The series however is perfect. The only other adaption that comes close as the series is The Lightning Thief musical, which I highly recommend if you haven’t seen it. The casting is well done, the actng is phenomenal, and the action as well as the emotional spectrum of the show is on point.
