- In this video, Eric shows and demonstrates the new @SmithAndWessonInc Shield + in the new 30 Super Carry cartridge from Federal. This round bridged the gap between 380 ACP and 9mm Luger allowing for greater magazine capacity and comparable power in the same sized package.

I doubt we will see many 9mm converts, but I can see NEW gun owners seeing this as an attractive caliber. Particularly someone that doesn't already own a stockpile of 9mm.
Personally, 30SC is attractive to me for that exact reason.
The issue with it is currently there are very few choices for pistols; I expect that to change quickly.
I am proof of that exactly. I went to purchase the Shield Plus in 9mm but left with a 30 Super Carry.
I wouldn't expect 9mm folks to give it up altogether, but I can definitely see having 30 Super Carry in addition. Could make total sense having a Shield Plus in 9mm for regular range trips, and a second one in 30 to shoot occasionally and use for EDC.
You'll see the micro compact conceal carriers form both 9mm and 380 buying some. You'll see women buying some because they can control it better than 9mm but have more power than 380. There will be manufacturers that have already been competing to pack as many powerful rounds into as small of a package as possible adopting rounds like this for conceal carry. Because it's a smaller diameter the +p version will have superior penetration to 9mm and it will travel through the air faster. It's not a weak round like 380. 380 is better than nothing but the guy you will be using your 380 against will already be shooting with ar15 so really probably better to have a bigger gun either way tbh. A sidearm is not a rifle. If the bad guy has a rifle and is far enough away you're not at good odds
LOVE my 30 Super Carry!!
I can definitely see the appeal of having 17 rounds on tap. Especially in a gun that size.
It's like a pistol consideration that shares a metaphor with 5.56NATO.
16 in a 43x smaller more power.... there's no reason for the 30sc 9mm is better in every way
@@tr1ppl3M No it isn't.
@@eane7238 elaborate
@@tr1ppl3M 9mm is not better than 30 super carry in every single way.
The question is, will it blow a lung out🙂
🤣🤣🤣
🤣
Now that’s funny
Let’s go, Brandon!
Only 9mm is that powerful. Although 50BMG comes close.
Anything that can help the younger & or females get acclimated to EDC pistols is a win in my book.
Well put, brother, well put!
There have been review's that say that you won't be able to tell the difference from 9 mil. Recoil . It is a high pressure round so I'll hold of for now I can't afford to learn with my own money .
If you’re looking for a softer shooting round, this ain’t it. The recoil is similar to 9mm. The point of this cartridge is to provide similar power of 9mm but with better capacity.
“The females” lol
@@denniscraig6022 Once someone makes a gun specifically for the caliber, the actual grip can be narrower because stacked 30sc is thinner than 9/380.
My first and only gun and I love it so far.
dead caliber
@@Ninoo187 not dead, newer caliber and I have no problem getting them 💁🏻♀️
@@Nita24t glad you enjoy it.
To me it seems to hit a kinda sweet spot for defense. 150 ft.lbs starts being real hurt, 200 is effective. 300 plus ftlbs is a fight stopper.
That kind of capacity is such a small package is unbelievable
That’s what she said. In all seriousness, this looks to be a pretty impressive pistol.
It’s literally only 4 more bullets! Your better off with 13rds in a shield plus.
@@isaakjunkeer785
When you reach the end of your mag, those 4 extra rounds can be the difference between life and death.
Now imagine Kel-Tec make a CP-33 derivative chambered in this cartridge. That thicc magazine, wonder how many it can hold.
@@daric_ I have watched plenty of Active Self Protection to know this couldn't be more true.
As a French guy, it reminds me the 7.62 French Long (7.62x20mm). I think it could be the nice little carry caliber… I always hoped for some .30” pistol caliber… now it’s there ;)
Love all S & W Shield products, to include this! All that power, capacity and concealment; the rest is up to the shooter!
I purchased one of the first shield plus in 30 SC that became available to my gun store because I really liked the idea behind the cartridge and I thought it had merit. I really hope it takes off and becomes popular because after shooting it a bit I found it very enjoyable. If nothing else, it's a neat historical piece for my collection. If you're looking for one, make sure you get a shield plus not a shield EZ, totally different guns.
Thanks for the info regarding the Shield Plus in 30 SC! I'm still concerned because I just purchased both a new .380 and a 9mm... But, I do like the idea of more rounds in the same package. At worst, if 30 SC doesn't take off, it would be a historical piece! Or, it'll be historical, if it takes off, "big time!"
I bought the 30sc Shield plus a few days ago when it arrived at the gun store. Been waiting for the Shield plus since they announced it at Shot Show. Already had the 9mm Shield plus and this one having 3 more rounds of capacity was just a bonus.
My Shield plus 9 is loaded with HST 147gr and the 30sc Shield plus is loaded with 100gr HST. Looking at the ammo boxes shows the 30sc HST as having 21ft/lbs more energy than the 9mm HST, so why exactly would anybody think the power is insufficient when the ft/lbs energy is greater?
All the videos so far on youtube show the HST 30sc rounds to be just as good as the 9mm HST's at expanding and penetrating, so chalk up another excellent HST caliber to Federal, who is well known for their HST bullets in every caliber.
The other part so far, is that I've been able to purchase 30sc HST's for the same price at Basspro as the 9mm HST's. With Hornady also announcing Critical Defense 30sc bullets, the fact 30sc has 3 excellent self defense loads to choose from among Gold Dot, HST, and Critical Defense, just shows me a good omen for its successful future.
I happen to own a EZ -9 !! I feel it's a more accurate gun & would get the same one in 30SC! EZ comes with a Lazer as well & fits most people's hands better! The Shield+ in restricted states is only going to come with one 10 round flush fit magazine. You can't get an extended magazine in 10 rounds either !
@@copper178 Excellent to hear from an actual owner of this and someone who has done direct comparisons, so many naysayers here who have no idea what they are talking about.!!!
.
The fact that 30SC HST costs the same as 147gr 9mm HST is a good omen for sure as it is brand new and up against the dirt cheap to make 9mm... Prices will come down for 30SC :)
I’m a 9mm fanboy, but I still think this round has some big potential! The fact that it’s that small, but can produce 9mm ballistics is amazing. I’m definitely gonna own one. I’d like to see this round put into some ppc’s as well, With like a 40 round stick mag. I bet with a carbine length barrel, it’d be a little monster!
30 super carry doesn’t have 9mm ballistics
@@ryanranard5187 @TheHiLife said "The fact that it’s that small, but can produce 9mm ballistics is amazing." .380 "can" produce 9mm ballistics, 40 S&W "can" produce 10mm ballistics and so on.
It is going to come down to the cartridge, there are some super weak 9mm rounds out there, and these two varieties of 30 Super Carry are the first on the market, there will be others, and as @IraqVeteran8888 has said, they will be doing gel tests, testing other ammo and comparing 30 SC to 380, 9mm and so on. Chill, and wait for the reviews :)
@@ADB-zf5zr there are some super weak 9mm out there.... yeah range rounds not carry rounds.
@@ryanranard5187 I did the math, and it seems to be 92%-99% the same. Seems like 30SC does 9mm better than 9mm.
Listen man they're going to put dumb rubber braces on all the ones with a short enough barrel that the barrel isn't so long that it has to be a rifle with a 16 inch barrel just to be able to put a folding stock on it the bullet starts slowing down before it even leaves that barrel if it's a pcc. What's the point in using guns for self defense if they're all legally forced into being unoptimized? Anyone with optimized guns won't be shooting guns made of rubber or with barrels that are too long and they'll be shooting the people who's guns have been neutered
Thanks Eric, of the new pistol cartridges coming out, the Super Carry is the one I find most appealing. This piece sure seam to work well. Informative video,---TPf
that round is very interesting. I'm not a one caliber guy I love them all... that shield 30 Super looks like a must have to me. I'm always wanting a new set of dies and components to load a new caliber.
It's actually closer to the older .32/20 in its hotter smokeless load. from about a 6 inch barrel revolver. That was a very popular cartridge up until WW2. That was when the various ammo companies stopped making the higher velocity. The .32/20 was rather popular with quite a few of the gunfighters of the day. It was also popular with law enforcement of the time..
The Dalton Defenders museum in Coffeevile KS displays a 32-20 SAA carried by one of the Dalton gang if my memory serves me correctly.
And from a revolver there was effective expanding ammunition or at least wadcutter bullets. Expanding bullets that can reliably feed in an auto-loading pistol (and reliably expand) is a fairly recent invention.
Thanks for your time, Eric.
Excellent video!
The rounds impact on the 2-liter bottles was pretty impressive!
At least right now for a new shooter I don't think this should be your only pistol just for the sake of being a new cartridge produced by one company, but as your "pocket carry" small pistol option assuming you can find enough ammo to practice with and carry at the time you buy the gun it sounds like a solid option.
Look at the ballistic videos. Just a about the same as a 9mm.
Thanks for the video and the info. Will be watching for the follow up. Been wanting to try this cartridge.
Gr8 review! And yes, I believe too that all these new shooters coming on line and of age will appreciate the fact that refinement of firearms technology had "them" in mind at least from the marketers point of view. From what I have seen, this cartridge and pistol def deliver!
Called my range today and told them to put it to the side for me and sign me up for there concealed carry next Saturday :)
Outstanding review that’s very detailed! My 30SC is on its way!
The actual advancement in pistol ammo will be when someone applies the 100k+ psi tech using steel bases on something like the 5.7x28.
There already is multi piece steel cases in 9mm out there. They are really stout and can handle a quite a few reloads at +p+ pressures. All whole being lighter than brass cases. Only real con to them is cost.
@@rileyneufeld7001 they cost less than brass. I have a bunch of them. They use steel cases with aluminum bases. The new tech uses steel bases.
What is this 100k+ psi tech?
I've been shooting and buying guns for decades. I bought one at a great price and gave it a try. And after further review this is a very viable gun to have. You get two to three more rounds. It basically has the same ballistics as a 9 mm. The Recoil is lighter than that of 9 mm. And a penetrates deeper than a 9 mm. 30 Super Carry with Hornady Critical Defense is a smart option.
I first saw this new round and immediately thought “oh it’s a modernized 7.65 French long” and I saw in a video that Ian McCollum thought the same thing 😂
I already have report to RUclipsr about fake pic pretending to be iraqveteran8888 it is actually scammer
Very thorough, informative and digestible review. Great ass job bro bro 🤜🏾🤛🏾
Hey I work at Apex thanks for buying our trigger and we are working on a 30 super Carry as we speak for the shield Plus
The next time I have the opportunity to go the range I will try to sample this impressive pistol thank you sharing it with your viewers
I carry an M&P Shield.40 cal. Performance Center fully ported with a short barrel. It hides very well and has a mean little kick. I bought it from my local dealer after he put me out on his range. Target was a 55 gal. barrel at 100 yards. Every single shot dead on target. Beautiful gun!
I have that exact gun and I really love it. I put a Hogue grip on it and it feels great!
I like the idea of the 30 super carry
i love my shield plus PC in 9mm, looking forward to trying the 30super
Great video I've been researching the 30 super. So far I'm considering buying one
Just the capacity alone makes 30SC in the Shield makes it a winner. Almost the same capacity as duty guns.
When this first came out I thought I would never buy a 30 Super, but since then I have had shoulder surgery, so now I am thinking about it.
Looks accurate. Looks reliable. The cartridge seems to work well enough, though time will tell on that one.
Choice is always good, we'll see if it will get a market share.
I now have three pistols and they are all different and unique. Starting with my Beretta 950 BS 25ca, my Ruger Security 380 and now my S&W 30 Super Carry. Looking forward to going to the range.
Nice shooting for a crooked sight and first use! Looking forward to more info eg; trigger wt; gun weight; etc. THX for review!
A 30sc pcc/pdw would be nuts.
I love the idea of this cartridge. Just haven't seen it in stores anywhere.
If a DA/SA platform is produced, I would consider investing in this setup. My first centerfire auto to learn was a PPK .32 ACP in the 80's. It would be cool to have a lighter modern frame in something that is basically a .32 caliber with more brass. Softer handloads, and paper targets with my daughter sounds fun.
I’m a 9mm guy typically, but I like the extra rounds with the .30 sc. Shot placement is everything
I use the Maglula for my SAR Titanium in 9mm and my SAR (CZ look) in .45. It makes loading faster than any other method I've ever found.
It's a great device, particularly for high-capacity mags.
Interesting round.
Not new to firearms in anyway but I’m definitely intrigued by this.
I've got mine ordered! I'd love to see Walther put this in a PPS!
0:49 that flinch is worse than me shooting my 45-70 revolver. All in good laughs as I'd be doing the exact same thing! 😅
Pretty snappy little thing
I have one and definitely like it ✌️ soon to be my EDC 👍
🤘😎✌️boom 💥 Thanks Eric 👍
Good vid, Like you I was a little confused loading the Magazine at first but, after running a few rounds the spring loosens up. It was the extra capacity & gel balistics that sold me. I have a few 9mm guns, the Super Carry 30 has less kick and easier to control on rapid fire. I highly recommend it for concealed carry. ps I just bought a Viridian Reactor Gen 2 Green laser for mine. The 9mm Shield Plus has the same trigger guard, Viridian says it will fit.
Thanks for confirming that this is tough to load. I bought it as my first gun and just thought that it was tough because I was a rookie. Considering you're a Pro, I guess it's not me. Thanks!!
It's one of my favorite cartridges. It's super comfortable le to shoot, plus its comparable to 9mm bulisticly.
I wouldn’t mind shooting one. Seems like a fun round to shoot
Hope your having a good day brother‼️🇺🇸
CANT WAIT .
I got it and love it.
Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the toughness of those mag springs. The magazines that came with mine are tougher to load than the mags on my XD-40.
Just get a lula loader…
Very good
I'm definitely interested in this caliber ✌️ hopefully the trigger will be as good as the M&P 10mm👍
Using ft ibs for terminal ballistics is nothing more than a sales tactic that somehow is still being perpetuated from some of the most trusted firearms experts and trainers out there. There's some amazing, recently made unclassified reports that go over this in nauseum. It's an awesome read.
Interesting video. Hope your having a good day. I will stick with my 9 mm
Nice shooting little handgun ....
I like it, thinking about ordering one. I shoot mostly .40 and .45 but have some 9mm and 380, this could replace both 9mm and 380 for me.
i like the idea.... _almost_ 9mm performance, less kick, more capacity. sounds like a winner.
Damn, 17 rounds in that tiny pistol… that seems appealing actually. I’ll have to see some gel tests and ammo tests… is this pistol similar in size to g43? That’s a lot of extra ammo compared to my g43, even with the shield arms 9 round mag
My hellcat holds 17+1
With the flush fit mag, the Shield Plus is 0.15" shorter in slide length, 0.35" longer in grip, 0.04" thicker, and 2.25 oz heavier. Many find the 9mm Shield and Shield Plus to be easier to shoot than the G43 due to the slightly larger size.
I actually have this firearm and one of the things I was so disappointed about was the magazine said 16 and it definitely only holds 15...my hellcat holds 15 but in 9mm so I'm actually selling it now. Also my hellcat will out shoot the shield plus any day of the week. Not sure if it's the new caliber or the gun but the accuracy was pretty bad at the range.
Man it’s June He’s in Georgia with a Jacket on 2022 yeah!
A nice compact in .30 Super is one of my dream pistols the 1st is the 5.7mm still though
I carry a PPQ M1. I'd love to have the same pistol in 30SC with Lehigh+Underwood loading.
I believe this cartridge is going to be a hassle to find and don’t believe that it is going to be a be hit with other manufacturers. But? I’m interested to try. Love y’all videos have a fantastic day and stay vigilant
I'm excited to try this caliber out. My first thought is will ammo be readily available in this caliber? No point in getting excited if you can't even get your hands on ammunition. Either way I think it's cool to see something new.
Now they need a Shield Plus EZ 30 Super Carry.
I have the EZ 380 and EZ 9mm. I think adding the EZ 30SC would be a fun thing to do and give me more rounds when I can carry the larger EZ. I'm still fairly new to CCW at age 70 so I'm open to new options. The P365 in 9mm was hurting my nerve-damaged hands so I have it in the new 380 version. I can handle larger 9mm such as the EZ so the EZ 30SC might work even better. I can hit well with the EZs and they eat every self-defense round I've put through them. Just got some Federal HydroShok Deep in 380 to try out in the P365. I've even experimented with a Glock in 45 for home defense and can handle it. The nerve damage requires me to keep trying to find what works best for me. For me, my CCW might not be my SHTF go-to pistol. Sort of 2 different philosophies of use (to quote NutnFancy).
Badass,30,super
I can't wait to see the wild caters start necking 30 SC down to .25 and .22 caliber.
If they sell this gun in a 4” performance center version i will buy it immediately.
Loading mags on all those shield pluses are difficult the first few times, once the spring breaks in its not so bad. I’ve got my plus in 9mm and after a day or two at the range they get a lot easier
Still wish they made a "plus" version of my beloved Shield .45. I wouldn't mind a thicker grip area anyway, and they could easily up the capacity from 7+1 to 12+1.
Yes sirski I just got me one and like it
looks like my next pistol
My Super 30 pulls left for sure. At ten feet I'm dead on after adjusting rear sight to the right.
I prefer the shield performance centre with the 4" for extra volosity and it looks better
I bought one of these, a case of ammo, dies, 3k 100gr FMJ and 500 100gr HST pulls. 👍
Too cool 👍
I'm really excited for this new round and gun. I can't decide on if I want this new shield plus in .30 super carry or the springfield xdm elite in 10mm lol. I wanted the smith and wesson 10mm but they are having issues with feeding.
I think 30 Super Carry has Something Special going on with it..
- Especially with the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus 30 Super Carry! 🤓👍
I was Hoping that you were gonna show some pictures of the 30 Super Carry Ammo that you used in the Video.
Decent ankle blaster
Breaking out the Jean Jacket!!!! BOOM!
I could see it becoming a multi-platform cartridge. Use it for defensive carry in semi-auto pistol, use it for dispatch in a revolver, use it for hunting in a carbine.
If it catches on, it can totally outshine a .380. It may not be as powerful as a 9mm, but it could still be worth owning as a switch out carry at least.
The average pressure of the .30 Super Carry cartridge is 52,000 psi, which could be a safety issue in pocket-size firearms that were designed for 21,500 psi (average .380 ACP pressure). However, any ammunition that is NOT used by military and law enforcement is good news for civilian markets, as long as civilians understand the importance of ammunition diversity. Meaning, good luck finding affordable 9mm if a major war breaks out. 30 Super Carry can survive if 52,000 psi does not injure too many shooters AND if made by manufacturers who only have production lines for civilian ammunition (e. g .30 SC, .223, 22LR, .357/.38) that will NOT re-purpose those production lines for military ammunition (e.g. 9mm, 5.56, etc).
If this round was on the shelves like 9mm I’d go with this just for the extra rounds in the mag
Ammo and components are a huge consideration for me (magazine price as well). Pretty cool little combo though.
Could make a fun cartridge to shoot out of pistol caliber carbines mainly from a higher magazine capacity.
As someone who carries an M57. This round is really interesting.
If 30 Super Carry catches on. I’ll sell my original Shield and buy this one. More capacity is always better!
I have the 9 plus and I'm thinking is going to super Carrie the ballistic were same as 9 on a video I watched
My objective for carrying is to stop a threat, not get into a firefight. I really like this caliber/power, but I am more interested in conceal ability than capacity, so I want to see a 7-8 capacity mag in a smaller gun...perfect!
As someone who doesn't own nor care about a 9mm, this is an intriguing round for me.
Just pulled the trigger on this to replace my second gen Shield. Think this will be enough and won't need to get a PC model with the trigger and night sites updated. At a hundred off retail I can send it off to get ported
Melt down test next!
