Clint Smith said it best. "Pistols put holes in people. Rifles put holes through people. Shotguns at the right range with the right load will physically remove a chunk of shit from your opponent and throw that shit on the floor"
😂
Lol Amen.
In multiple pieces LOL
Came here to comment this!
You’ve got to respect the floor’s needs.
I think a shotgun is a great weapon for defense entrenched in a home. Aimed at doors and hallways you can essentially shoot 9 bullets at once with 00 buck.
Exactly.👍
But if you have to bug out, it is the most versatile for defense and hunting....
We're freinds automatically now lol

Yeah, a fast semi-auto shotgun is faster than a machine gun.
I carried a shotgun in Vietnam and I will tell you it is a very viable option for a weapon.
Thanks for your service fellow Patriot!
I was in the Vietnam War too... born in 1968.
My Dad's squad in Vietnam, had a pointman who used a Winchester pump from back home.
I talk to a lot of Vietnam veterans. Some of this guys carry a saw off double barrel shotgun or pump. One guy has his family sent him some 3 inch Magnum hunting shotgun ammo.
12ga 00buck is a fight stopper for sure, doesn't have to be center mass either. Even extended range is enough. Semper Fi brother.

Not only versatile, but several years ago when ammo was scarce, I made my purchase of an M4 because shotgun ammo was the only ammo readily available. Then there is the distinctive sound of a shotgun shell being chambered and the fear it can cause to intruders.
I knew an old guy who had been a Marine on Okinawa in WW2. When the shooting started he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn so they gave him a 12 gauge. He wound up killing several enemy soldiers. Then they made him the bodyguard for an officer. In his 70s the old guy played tennis and refereed high school basketball games. He died in 2016 at 94 years old.

No arguing with the home howitzer, at least not a living argument
better question would be, why not a shotgun?
A shotgun isn't a question, it's an answer. 😁
Cause a lot of these larpers never hunted & watch too much youtube larpers larping. Truth is, there's no better weapon 50yds & in, & you can stretch it further if you know what you're doing & know your loads & chokes.
When range is close it's not an issue my only stipulation would be penetration but then you have that problem with 223 as well so a shotgun and a 308 rifle it is but before the AR fanboys freak out I only own like 7 of them different situations call for different guns you are not going to do with one type every thing has its place and different types of ammo have their purpose as well I've used shotguns since I was a youngster I very much know their advantages and limitations as for the AR platforms I cut my teeth on em with the M16A1 then transitioned to the A2 so I've been familiar with it for over 35 years I know and I'm very adept with either but realize one tool is no substitute for the other.
My point exactly the closer you are the bigger the mess they will experience
For the longest time, I only had one shotguns and I thought that's all I would need. Fast forward a couple of years, I now have a lot of shotguns, and I love them all.
Any man that says a shotgun is not relevant In the firearms world because of its recoil or it’s too big, probably wears a shirt that snaps between the legs.

Have you tried it?

What is the most recognized sound in the world? A pump action shotgun. What is the most versatile "tool" that goes bang? A shotgun. 00 Buck typically have 9 to 13 9mm size shot per shell. Making 2 shotshells the equivalent of or more than one magazine. Shotguns work well for large game, small game and can fit almost any home defensive situation.
A fart is the most recognizable sound in the world.
Self defense, anti drone, anti vehicle, and big/small game. I’ve always told young people or first time gun owners to buy a shotgun first then get whatever you want. Shotguns will work for 90% of people 90% of the situations they would use it for.
Anti-drone?
You realize it's may be a federal crime to shoot at aircrafts, right? 😂
I was one of the first to say the shotgun is _Anti Drone_ decades ago and people laughed.
Fast forward to 2024 and who's laughing now?
Shotguns are, in my eyes, one of the most underrated tools in the self defense world. Yes, they have a learning curve and aren't the best for everything but I cannot think of a more effective, affordable, and versatile firearm out there. Outside of CCW, a shotgun, be it in 12 or 20 gauge even, will suit the majority of most people's needs. Law Enforcement and the military still use them to this day for a reason: they just plain work.
I’ve never heard someone who used a shotty in the military badmouthing the shotgun. It’s the guys who only ever trained on ARs who insist that a rifle is the only way
When used within the range they were designed for, shotguns deliver massive amounts of energy on target while reducing many of the overpenetration problems that the use of a rifle can create.
Depends on what kind of rifle.
@@Hornet135 a $200 Mossberg delivering over 3000 ft pounds of energy in an American made reliable platform is a serious nasty amount of power and bang for your buck. No rifle can really deliver that devastation for the price. It's what I suggest to people who need a good self defense platform at home but don't have a lot of money. Train with birdshot, slugs and buck for when playtime is over.
@@theshapeexists I don’t know why you even wrote this. You’re arguing against something I didn’t even type.
@@Hornet135his response was spot on to your post. Don’t really know what rifle you’re referring to when comparing max payload vs overpenitration.
@@rmiller334 The idea that a shotgun reduces the risk of over over penetration that rifles have is nonsense. Sure, if you shoot birdshot it does, but that would be majorly handicapping your capabilities. When you use something like 00, #1, or #4 buck it can penetrate a few walls made of drywall, not really any less than 5.56 which tends to yaw, slow down, and break up relatively quickly. So it’s kind of a distinction that isn’t based in reality.
I don’t know why this is controversial. We’re not all fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan. Yes it’s stupid to pick a shotgun in that situation when you need to engage 200yd+… for many other cases it’s a perfectly useful, versatile, valid choice.
Most people do not live in a house that is 200 yards (600 feet) long or wide, at least, not the interior.
Well, I'm tea bagged by the rockies every day.😅
most confrontations are close range! facts!
Well said!
You have some explaining to do if you're shooting someone at 200+ yards.😂
Why a shotgun? I'm Canadian.
My choices are 5 or 10 rounds of 5.56 in a $3,000 rifle that could banned any second.
Or 5-8 rounds of 00 buck in a sub $1,000 shotgun that is mostly safe from bans because they're used for hunting.
Plus, you have grizzly bears and moose. Shotgun will put both of them down. Personally I wouldn't want to rely on an AR against either at close range. Even if you could have a drum magazine. It might work, but, I'm not taking that bet.
Don’t be so sure about them not banning pump shotguns in Canada. They banned them down in Australia along with everything else.
That's a valid reason. We have states south of the border that aren't as free as others.
@@chrishunnicutt2570and it's that kind if mindset that lost the Emu war.
Get both.
The purpose of a shotgun is to feed you and your family.
With the correct load, it can drop pretty much anything edible, from birds to buffalo.
It can do many other roles in a pinch, but putting food on the table is the primary role of a shotgun. It will reliably put food on the table better than any other firearm.
If you don't believe me, try duck hunting or trap shooting with your rifle.
Exactly ☝️
What's trap shooting?
@@Fraco_Oniisama clay shooting is called "trap", from the old days when they weren't shooting clay "pigeons", they were shooting real pigeons. Those pigeons were put in "traps" which were removed with the pull of a string. Which is why clay shooters to this day say "pull" when they are ready to shoot.

Why a shotgun: 10 reasons
1. Easy to operate
2. Very reliable
3. Incredibly easy for anyone to point shoot and hit the target effective enough to end them
4. Cheapest option for home defense firearm (even cheaper than most handguns)
5. Large selection of ammo types
6. A 4.10 or 20 gague youth model with buck shot can be used as an effective weapon by damn near anyone of any size any age any gender and any minimal average physical ability
7. No real worries about over penetration
8. Perfect gun for "across the room" threats
9. Excellent for hunting any size game
10. Bc they are FUN
11. Fastest on target after learning how to drop a bead & lead. Just as fast as a red dot, but better cuz ot patterns(unless you're slinging slugs).
For me a shotgun is a good idea due to versatility. Yes you can defend yourself pretty well with a shotgun and you can hunt well with a shotgun. You can buy a Mossberg Field and security model and have one shotgun, 2 barrels, that can cover most of your needs for a lot less than an AR. You can hunt anything from rabbit, dove, to deer all with the same gun.
Tools in the tool box. Choose the right tool.
Every job needs dedicatet tools, but some tools could be used in diferent jobs. Shotuns are a tools for specific jobs, but a lot more than one. In a worst case scenario, use it as a club.
Consider in WW1 the germans were more concerned with the 5 shot trinch shotgun than they were the Thompson machinegun loaded with way more rounds. That fact speaks volumes on the effectivness of a shotgun.
I thought they all fall to hardball.

Mastering a shotgun is one of the most satisfying things you can do as a firearms enthusiast. I was an 0311 infantry rifleman and i appreciate my rifles but I love my shotguns. I regularly train with them, I love modifying them, I love the power, and I especially love the versatility. Another thing to love about them is that they are like a manual transmission. Maybe it's not quite as effective as an automatic, but damn is it satisfying to drive and if you are really good there isn't that much of a difference.
Shotguns are simple, reliable and versatile tools
so close to my birthday, Eric says I should get a shotgun. I might have to listen to the signs.
Damn. I'm getting my social security tomorrow.
A Mossberg 500 with an 18 1/2" and a 28" barrel is a great deal. You can swap between a bird gun and a home defense gun in less than 5 minutes. The Coast Guard has used them as their standard issue for decades. Police departments use them. It's an inexpensive and reliable option.
A lot of lightly built women may find the recoil excessive.
My wife might break 100 pounds on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Good luck separating here from her mossberg 500. I did put a Knox stock on it for her though. Streamlight forend and a red dot. She grabs that thing and is gone when she hears the chickens start making noise at night. It's loaded with BB shot which has dropped countless coyotes and raccoons, and after seeing what's left of those animals I'm confident it would work against a person at indoor ranges.
Bought a maverick 88 cruiser a while back , absolutely love it . Would definitely trust it to protect my life

OO buck. Great weapon for home defense. Great video!
A while back ago a buddy was telling me about shooting wet telephone books and that they can soak up lots of rounds of you wrap them in duct tape. So a couple weeks later we were bored and wanted to mess around and I said I have some old telephone books and duct tape. So we gathered everything together and shot up one with his 5.56 . It definitely held together well for a whole mag and I said let see what the 12 gauge can do on a fresh one and I swear . It ballooned and almost exploded on the first round and on the second round it blew up. After that I realized a shotgun was superior considering 2 rounds vs 30.
The 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot in normal room distances is a proven fight stopper against home invasions and will end the threat rapidly. I have witnessed the fight stopping ability of this weapon and can confirm its decisiveness. Even so still have a handgun avaliable in your home defense battery of firearms
Iraqveteran8888, I used to be a FUD about 4 years ago pre-Covid bullshit. I would have considered myself pro2A but I did not understand the firearms dilemma very much at all. I actually started through watching years of your videos way back to the beginning videos of this channel or at least what was available and have kept watching your videos since that time. I have since become actually pro2A and come to aquire a pretty decent selection of firearms in the last 4 years. I just kind of recently came to the realization that I don’t really own a defense shotgun. I owned only a single 28” semi shotgun for hunting. After much consideration, I bought a beretta 1301 yesterday (day before this video). It’s the most I’ve ever spent on a gun so I felt a bit guilty but I had just came to the realization of how effective shotguns are in relation to how little love they seem to get. They obviously have a few limitations but the range of capabilities with a shotgun is still far beyond my actual knowledge. It sucks when you start out as a FUD or anti-gunner at 30 years old but I’m trying to catch up with training and as you said at least owning the tool is a start. It’s nice to see you put out a video like this a day after I bought the most expensive gun I’ve purchased but the other great thing about shotguns is that other than ammo, they are not very restrictive for anyone to own. I chose to start with a much pricier option but I could just as easily have gone with a mossberg 590 or something even more affordable. There are lots of very reliable options for any consumer which is really nice.
Sounds like a "buy once, cry once" situation to me. A year from now you more than likely won't feel the sting from getting what you wanted. 5 years from now you'll be super happy you did. Enjoy!

Welcome to the 2A community! Very good choice! I either own or have owned every quality semi auto defensive shotgun made and the Beretta 1301 is the best of the bunch as far as quality!
Let's not forget the ease of shooting things off the sky both food and UAV 😅
Yep, though, I hear UAVs are crunchy LOL
Haha you said it! Best thing about a shotgun these days is it ‘defeats’ level 4 body armor with very high powered slugs, the round doesn’t go through it just creates massive backface deformation way over the 44mm NIJ limit. The only rifle caliber that can do that is 338 lapua magnum or 300 RUM or up. I’ve even seen some level 4 armor stop m995/m993 yet the shotgun can still do real damage and likely stop an attacker wearing level 4.
Shotguns beat armor the best way possible, sending a 5+” pattern that, unless perfectly centered on the plate, will be putting holes in the bad guy. There’s a video going around of two cops being knocked out of the fight despite the armor and ARs by a drunk dude with birdshot.
I’ve got a lotta love for my shotties and wouldn’t trade them for anything.
There’s a gun in every room, but a 12 gauge with buckshot, alternating slugs is what’s in my bedroom

When I was young. Every kid who went to hunters safety would soon have a 22lr and a shotgun. I also got a deer rifle on my sixteenth birthday. For me growing up this was normal. With my shotgun I've put a lot of meals on the table. If a twelve year old can handle a shotgun, so can you.

If you shoot a shotgun "from the hip", with the stock sticking out behind you, there is barely any recoil. Its bracing it against your shoulder where you feel it kick. In an emergency, shooting one handed is not bad either, if you extend your arm & dont brace it. If you want to try it for yourself, I'd suggest you try it off the hip fitst, using 2 hands. When you see how little it kicks, you will have an easier time trying with one hand. Might be handy in certain situations...

I agree with a lot of your arguments but where we differ is slugs in a house? Why? At in house distances dbl ott is essentially a deer slug with slightly more spread.
It’s not just about aiming characteristics, it’s about effect on target. Buckshot applies almost the full force of the shell to the first thing it hits.

Shotguns can be amazing! The biggest weakness is range.
Well for “home defense” range isn’t much of an issue. I can think of very few realistic instances where you are “defending yourself” by putting rounds down range at 200 yards. Good luck explaining that in court.
Things tend to move when you shoot at them. A little bit of spread helps in mine craft.

While using an effective tool is the most important part of the home defense equation, another factor, while not as important, is definitely something You might want to consider. You gotta clean up the house afterwards.
Another thing to remember, as it pertains to 00 buckshot, is that each trigger pull is sending about eight or nine *approximately* 9mm caliber projectiles on target, versus a single pistol or rifle projectile. So a shotgun with a capacity of 8 rounds of 00 buck means you have about 72 projectiles.
That's the kinda math I'm talkin bout! 💪
00 Buck is .33” not .355”/ 9mm and weighs ~54 gr each.
This is correct. Each brief pull of the trigger spits out several projectiles similar to a burst from a submachine gun. Just like a submachine gun, it can empty the magazine quickly. Though chances are good that you also ended the fight quickly in your favor. It is a great home defense option for those who can handle the recoil.
@@Hornet135 Thank you. I have edited my comment.
@g54b95 we are talking thousandths of an inch. 9mm is a close enough analogy to each pellets diameter to get your point across to those that don't understand. You did fine bro.
“Pistols put holes in people. Rifles put holes through people. Shotguns, the right load at the right range will physically remove a chunk from your opponent and throw it on the floor behind him, and you will have to get someone to come clean it up with a shovel.”
Ole Clint Smith has a way of illustrating a point don't he 🤣
Technically a standard 6-8 capacity shotgun holds 54-72 rounds of 00 buck. Shotguns are just cool and sometimes pieces of art.
Mossberg 590s Tactical. Takes the stubby shells which I feel has a place in home defense. Though if you live with someone else, have slugs in case you need to be precise. Less kick, higher capacity, and still plenty powerful enough for one round to be a lifetime supply.
So I'm not the only person so keep all four by the nightstand.. Well strategically placed, pistol on the nightstand, Ar,Ak, or Shotgun coming your way...
