Reason for neko and nohebi playing is because three team spots are available to make it to nationals. Tokyo being a large region allows for 2 teams to go to nationals, and since the region is also hosting the nationals, a sponsored placement is also allowed. Which is the game currently being played between neko and nohebi. Great reaction coach!

Normally each prefecture only gets 1 school representative in nationals. But big prefectures like Hokkaido, Osaka, and especially Tokyo get 2 schools. That's why Itachiyama and Fukorodani will advance. Since Tokyo is hosting this year's national they get an extra school. That's the Nohebi vs. Nekoma fight

@@Aisluin personally, I think Hinata's abilities don't even matter to Bokuto. He's saying "if you want it, then get so good that you can go to nationals and get it yourself." That's a theme I see consistently in Haikyuu, doesn't matter if you aren't good now, just get better and catch up. The beauty of it is that characters like Hinata persevere and make it because they're so passionate and take Bokuto's words as motivation.

Hi Coach! About S04, it's not a particular animator that changed. It was the mostly whole main staff! Haikyuu TO THE TOP came out 4 years after S03. With that, the old staff move on and start to working on new projects. But i will bring two nomes of the previous staff that were surely missed in S04
Takahiro Chiba, the Chief Animation Director for the previous 3 seasons. Without his amazing supervision on the drawings, there was a need of making de design of the character more "simple", to still have a fluid animation. His absence in this season was sure the most missed.
Susumu Mitsunaka, the previous series director. As you saw in S01-02-03, Susumu Mitsunaka was perfect for Haikyuu. The way that he manage the series, nobody would be so good and fit as him. The new director is good to (She was episode director for S03E04, the episode where Tsuki blocked Ushiwaka. With that you know that are in good hands)
About the new staff, don't worry. There are a lot of new talents in this season that you will love! The schedule this season was tight, having as consequence a full outsourced episode for other studio. And it's in this episode that mostly of the memes are.
But you will have a great time anyways! Haikyuu S04 it's not a masterpiece in terms of direction and animation like S01-02-03, but still gave us something really good with top tier moments. Hope that you enjoy!

When he was a student, Furudate (manga artist of Haikyuu) sensei came to his school for research and he and his teammate were very excited that their school is seen in Haikyuu.

Hey, Coach! 😊 Something you might not have put together is that when Bokuto "forgot" how to hit cross shots, that wasn't just coincidence -- it was a deliberate tactic/manipulation from Kenma. During one of the team huddles, Kenma tells the rest of Nekoma to _allow_ Bokuto to get comfortable hitting line before they shut it down. He was hoping to back Bokuto into a corner like that: making him get into a groove and then taking that option away so he struggles. And it worked! Kenma is, without a doubt, Nekoma's brain.

The Tokyo prefecture is bigger than the Miyagi prefecture (where karasuno/Seijoh/shiratorizawa/etc are) so tokyo can have 2 teams go to nationals, whereas Miyagi can only have 1.
However Tokyo is hosting nationals that year, so they get an extra team in the tournament, so the four teams are playing for the 3 spots.

Additionally, Tokyo will be hosting the national tournament this year, so they also get an extra host representative. Since Itachiyama and Fukurodani made it to the qualifier finals, they will now compete for 1st and 2nd seeds in the games at Nationals. Nohebi and Nekoma will compete to decide who will be the host representative team.

    Title & Tournament Explanation!
Title: “Land vs Air” is referring to the mascots of the teams. Nekoma Cats(Neko in Japanese) are land and the Fukurodani Owls(Fukuro in Japanese) are air!
Tournament: The prefecture (kind of like a county in a big state) that Nekoma & Fukurodani are in is WAY bigger than the one our Karasuno boys are in. These teams are in the Tokyo area which always gets to send 2 teams nationals. This year Tokyo is hosting the nationals so they get to send an extra team. The tournament we’re watching is choosing those 3 teams out of the top 4 in the prefecture so it’s a double elimination. The teams that won their game already know they’re going to nationals so story wise, we’re worried about whether or not Nekoma gets to go😁

The reason it's called Land vs Air is because of their "mascots". Nekoma being cats and Fukurodani being Owls. The way the the spring tournament works is that every prefecture or "state" in Japan has a tournament and then the winners of those go to Tokyo to compete in Nationals. Depending on the population of the prefecture they are either allowed 1 or 2 spots. Miyagi prefecture, where Karasuno are from, is only allowed 1 spot. Since Tokyo, where Nekoma and Fukurodani are from is so dense in population, they are allowed 2 spots for nationals (+1 extra spot since Tokyo is the host city).

  • @Chinnybon

Just to clarify, Coach, Tokyo gets three representatives at nationals. Two for its size and a third for hosting. So the top three teams in Tokyo’s prefectural qualifiers get to go to nationals, which is what Nohebi and Nekoma are competing for, after their losses to Itachiyama and Fukurodani, respectively.

I've always though Land vs Air was a commentary on the two aspects of defense, namely Blocking vs Digging. Nekoma is a very defensive focused team, and the major conflict of the story is Lev helping to fit into and understand the interplay between the two. Something that also got brought up in S3 with Tsuki, but they like to focus on the point that blocking is about more than just getting in from of every ball and slamming it down. Blocking can also be about taking up space, guiding the opponents into hitting it where you want it, and trusting your back-line to dig the ball. Kuroo has shown to be very good at this and a big advocate for it, which makes sense since Yaku (Nekoma Libero) is a friend who he trusts to dig the ball. Yaku also yelled at Lev for not playing this way, specifically calling him out for flailing around and making it harder for Yaku to see instead of trusting his Libero.

A little info: Season 3 (2016) and Season 4 including this OVA (2020) are actually 3-4 years apart. Meaning, the anime went on a 4 years hiatus. The reason is that the anime was close on catching up from the manga, the original source of Haikyuu. When Season 3 last episode which is episode 10 was aired, the manga was just on the first part of what Season 4 will cover so there's no content to animate so they decided to let the manga release more chapters so that they could have more content to animate in the future. They released season 4 when the manga was working on its last final arc. Also, It's a 4 years hiatus so some directors and animators that handled haikyuu before have gone and are busy with some new projects that's why you'll see many big changes from the animation. Changes are also evident from the voices of these characters but not that much.. just minor ones.
4 year gap was crazy for me and I remember myself at 2017 really losing hope for Season 4 but here it is after 4 years lol. It's nice that you won't have to go through that kind of pain haha. I hope you'd enjoy Season 4, coach! So many amazing scenes and moments and so much character developments! Hope you enjoy watching again! I look forward to your remaining reactions!

I'm tired of people bombarding reactors with how bad season four's animation is long before they even get to the season, especially when they comment on good animation in seasons 1-3. Coach is already looking for poor animation in an OVA that doesn't have the "terrible animation" that people are talking about. Plus, then they don't enjoy the story as much because they're so focused on looking for bad animation. It's so frustrating. I'm glad someone else was thinking this and said this.

So fukurodani for example has fukuro in the name which means owl and bokuto's looks are sort of based on an owl, especially his eyes. Same with nekoma, with neko meaning cat and kenma kind of looking like a cat. Almost all teams have something like this, you'll definitely see more of this later on. I'd say karasuno is a bit of an exception, they are all essentially crows, an animal that is weak by itself, but strong in numbers. Hey Coach Danny! Love your reactions.
Just want to say before heading into Season 4, I want to explain briefly why S4 is different from the previous ones with some behind the scenes info. It might interest you since you have an understanding of animation. I think you would appreciate how well the animation is when you actually see it.
Between S3 and S4 (~4 years) , the animation studio, Production I.G. , had a change in the staff that was working on Haikyuu. The Series Director and a few of its talented Key Animators moved on to work on other projects within the studio. Also this season included a change in the character designs. An attempt to make the designs to be more faithful to the manga. It also had the benefit of helping ease the workload for the animators with the animation friendly simpler designs.
However the main worry leading up to the start of the season was them having a tighter production schedule to over come compared to the previous seasons, which were more healthy.
To help reduce the workload they ended up splitting the season in two halves during its airing. With the second half being delayed due to the pandemic.
The reason for S4 being “bad” is not bc animators are “lazy” or they “ran out of budget”. The most likely reason is just them not having a healthy schedule as what they had for previous seasons. So some moments had to be “sacrificed” to ensure they had time to work on the episodes/moments that mattered.
When watching this season as it aired weekly, I will say that there were a few moments where the quality was definitely not at the same level as previous seasons. But really, this only seen in like 3 or so episodes out of 25 for this season. This season still hits those big moments, the same, if not better than the previous seasons. I know you will come to appreciate them when you see them!
It should be noted that the studio did do some touch ups to the art and animation for the Blu Ray home release, which look good!
Though I believe Crunchyroll still has the tv broadcast version and not the Blu-ray version.

I think it's called land vs. air because of the game between nekoma and fukurodani. nekoma specializes in defense and fukurodani are more offensive. also, nekoma's mascot is a cat (a land animal) and fukurodani's mascot is the owl (an "air" animal).

I wouldn’t call the animation quality of season 4 “poor”. It’s just different since they really tried to match the manga so stuff that looked detailed before will look awkward because it looks the same in the manga.
But don’t worry, there are pieces of animation that you can definitely looking forward to

Dude have u watched "to the top 1&2"? The style may be more similar to the manga I give u that (and yes I read it) but the animations are dropping hard ...it is not fluent at all compared to all seasons before that.

@@dangmb011dpn7 agreed, the animation in to the top 1 and 2 was less fluid, but comparing it to fan animations is going too far, after all except the the few out sourced episodes, the rest were animated well, especially scenes like the final rally etc.

Let's not forget that season 4 was produced during the pandemic. They reused a lot of scenes and even outsourced one episode (which is the only poorly animated episode of this season btw) because of that.

      @LixienXIII 2 года назад +8

But it's not the s4 artstyle why people complain. It's the animation quality the thing that dropped. But people notice more that the artstyle changed and don't really have that much knowledge in how anime works so they just blame it to the artstyle. But you can literally watch the openings for S4 and see the full potential of the s4 artstyle, if the series had that level of animation no one would complain about the "artstyle" (it's obviously not realistic, the animation quality in the openings it's just not doable for a full season)

As always, thanks for the insightful reaction coach!
This episode really holds a special spot for a lot of fans (me included) because this was like the the first episode after Haikyuu came back from a 4 year hiatus after season 3.
I love the fact that they did the art style a lot closer to the manga, so I really have no complains on that. The change in animation was not quite bad for this one, even if people noticed, they didn't complain much. But that's mainly because by the time this OVA got released, most were just really glad that the anime finally released new content.
Sadly, the animation does get noticeably worse. I just really hope the story progression makes up for it. I wish you good luck on the next reactions!

Hey Coach, two things (one you asked for and one fun fact): The tournament system for Land vs. Air is that it was a full tournament to get to the Top 4, but the seats for Nationals take the Top 3. That's why Kuroo mentioned winning in the semifinals guaranteed a nationals spot because they were Top 2 that way, but losing to Fukurodani meant they were now playing for 3rd place. The way teams get spots for Nationals depends on their prefecture, with larger prefectures getting additional seats. Tokyo naturally gets two, but being the host for the Nationals tournament means they get an additional spot (kinda like the World Cup host team getting an automatic seat). This was covered more explicitly in the manga.
Another aspect that the manga highlights but the anime doesn't is how Nohebi (whose mascots are snakes) are capable of actual underhanded tactics. The anime mentions them having the ref wrapped around their finger, but doesn't show at least one point where they finesse a poor line call in their favor by playing to the officials, something we haven't seen in any of the seasons yet. The anime instead highlights how they're a good enough team to get to the semis based on skill, but doesn't acknowledge the less savory methods a team can get away with to improve their odds.

Hey coach! Here's the explanation about the importance of the match between Nekoma and Nohebi and the name of the OVA.
For Nationals every prefecture gets one spot, but as Tokyo is one of the biggest ones, they get two, so the finalists are the ones who go to Nationals. Also as the Nationals will be held in Tokyo, they get one more representative, that's why the match between Nekoma and Nohebi matters, because they're trying to get that third spot.
Also the name Land vs Air might be a reference to the fact that Nekoma is represented by cats and Fukurodani as Owls as you could see during the (not so) half-time scene. But your analogy about one team with a really good defense keeping the ball in play (Nekoma) and the other team always spiking and winning those air battles on the net (Fukurodani, thanks to Bokuto mainly) is on point.

  • @HTK9325

    Hey coach,
The tournament of nationals works so that 2 teams from Tokyo get to go (Both Finalists), but since they are also hosting nationals, they have an extra team slot for 3rd place which is why Nekoma are still trying very hard.

Yaku (Nekomas libero) is one of the top 3 libero's in the country
There are 3 spots available in tokyo region to qualify to nationals (because of more teams in that prefecture)
    2 spots originaly
3rd spot is a special position because Tokyo is the place hosting nationals this year
    Fukurodani and Itachiyama already qualified
Nekoma and Noheibi are fighting for the 3rd place to qualify as the last chance

  • @meg0596
    @meg0596 2 года назад +3

I believe Tokyo always has 2 representatives for the nationals (unlike Miyagi with 1 rep). The prefecture that hosts the nationals get to have another slot and this year, Tokyo hosts the spring interhigh. Hence, 2 usual reps from Tokyo + 1 host rep = 3 Tokyo representatives. Nekoma is vying for the host rep slot.

Hi coach! I just wanted to clear out that since these OVAs, the characters’ designs will be different because they decided to make them more similar to those of the manga (the original comic it’s based from). This OVAs together with the first half of the next season will still look great, the problem will come on the second part of season 4 because that’s when covid started and they had problems animating due to the pandemic. Because they needed to animate everything on time, they outsourced some episodes or scenes to another studio which had problems adapting to the character designs and didn’t have staff as great as the haikyuu animators. So, the second part of season 4 doesn’t look bad all the time, it’s a rare combination between amazing animation in some scenes (the ones animated by the original studio) and some really bad animated scenes (those were the outsourced ones). In most episodes it isn’t that bad except ep 2 of the second part of the 4th season.

The animation in this season is really good, I love the old animation but this one is so crisp and updated it's really pleasing to watch, all the screenshots of the awful animation are only from the outsourced episodes ( which are pretty bad). Just because they had another studio animate them with lower quality and less effort so they could focus on the more important parts in the show

The animators for these OVAs are the same ones from season 4. So this is the point from where the animation and character designs are gonna change.
Also the Land vs Air was a reference to the first match of Fukurodani vs Nekoma, where Nekoma is represented by cats and Fukurodani are owls.
As far as the bracket goes Itachiyama vs Nohebi (off camera match) and Fukurodani vs Nekoma were the Tokyo regional semi finals, where Itachiyama and Fukurodani went on to the finals with their respective wins. And Tokyo being a big prefecture gets 2 spots in nationals, so those 2 spots are already decided by the end of the semi finals, since both teams in finals qualify for nationals. The 'last spot' that Nekoma were talking about was the extra spot available to Tokyo prefecture for being the host city for the Nationals this year. Hence Nekoma is going up against Nohebi for that last spot in the 3rd place play off match in the 2nd OVA.

To be honest, I don't think you're going to disapprove of S4's animation at all. The animation people call bad is an episode that was given to a different company because of problems at the studio that usually produces the hiakyuu episodes. Besides that one episode, I'd say the animation is fantastic. It really portrays how far we are i my opinion.I think you'll enjoy the animation of S4.
