    There's only 2 main tournaments mostly covered in Haikyuu: Inter-High and Spring High (Spring tournament). School year starts in April.
    1) Inter-High:
    - prelims/qualifiers from around June, nationals in August;
    - covered in season 1;
    - winners of both prelims and nationals get seeded in Spring High (say you make it to top-4 in prelims of Inter-High - that means you don't need to start from the very first round in the prelims of Spring High, you'll skip a round or two depending on your previous results).
    2) Spring High:
    - prelims around August, qualifiers in October, nationals in January right after New Year [we are here now];
    - covered from season 2 onwards (starting from prelims in Miyagi prefecture);
    - used to be held around March, but that's too close to exam season in Japan, so it was moved all the way up to January so that third-years could still participate;
    - 47 teams of only boys, with girls it's twice as many (obviously competing separately, but still, just to feel the scale). This year there were 52x2 = 104 teams total. This tournament is really well-covered by the media.
    More about traditional stuff in this episode:
    - first dream of the year (hatsuyume) is considered to "set the tone" for the whole year (funnily enough, we have a similar expression in Russia), that's why Daichi was annoyed at his dream;
    - Japanese people do visit shrines in the very beginning of the year to pray for various things (hatsumoude);
    - the fortunes they pulled are called omikuji, you can get anything from great curse to great blessing. They're laughing at Asahi cause while "great curse" it's bad, it's kind of a rare omikuji, so you might be considered lucky to pull it; but Asahi got just a simple "curse" - nothing special, just bad luck lol;
    - I think Nishinoya was playing hanetsuki with his grandpa - kind of like a Japanese traditional version of badminton, often played around New Year.
    Ikejiri was Daichi's former teammate from junior high! Karasuno played his team (Tokonami) in season 1.
    Haikyuu soundtracks are really great btw, you can check them out on Spotify!

    Multiple animators do multiple episodes. There's not just one or a handful doing it at any given time. The drop in quality is usually associated with last minute outsourcing, often to foreign teams, with less money, less time, and less oversight to maintain the unified look.

      No it does not begin here....... There will be 2 episodes in the 2nd cour of To the top which will not have good animation, otherwise some of the strongest cuts of the whole show will be present in this season. You guys really exaggerate stuff on here 😅

    • @Fuiger
      @Fuiger 2 года назад +38

      The animation this episode literally had nothing wrong with it tho... I agree with the guy above, everyone watched the season only once and got that impression from the general negativity and now everyone exaggerates and thinks it's terrible when it has many of the most fluid cuts in the series. And that "general opinion" just spreads with only 2 sole episodes as a basis. Artstyle does not equal animation quality. Doesn't help that many people just spammed "season 4 has TERRIBLE animation!!1!" to the coach when we were just on season ONE which obviously influences his opinion...

      @@pandyssianrat 2 episodes were outsourced. But there was a consistent drop in animation consistency for the second half all around. For a huge match like this, where for previous big matches there was great animation throughout, its very jarring. There are a few very strong cuts, but also nowhere near as MANY strong cuts overall. And where as past matches would have good-great animation throughout, this one has horrible animation for the outsourced episodes, and for the non outsourced episodes it rangers from below average-great. Super inconsistent.

      @@Fuiger Exactly! I also think the coach not knowing how the in-house /freelance animators, background artists and outsourced episodes are contracted in Japan is reinforcing people's already negative view of this season. He also can't distinguish between loose models with bad anatomy, most of the time. (!!!! I am not trying to insult or hate on Coach here, I am just stating the truth !!!!)
      COVID-19 was a surprise to most of the productions during that season. Various committees on various projects had to make the decision to outsource some of their episodes which had to be ready in a single month at best (an episode at least needs 3 months to be completed on average).

    31:58 just a note for you coach, anime studios have 8 to 15 animators working on a single episode. Every episode of the series has change in the animators, because it's a team effort, not a one animator job, it's just that sometimes the change is noticable and sometimes it's not.

    Awesome reaction coach!
    Quick note: at the beginning of the video you were right, it is a common japanese tradition to visit shrine temples on the first day of the new year to ask for good fortune, it's something common across all the country and some temples are really famous like, for example, the temple Sensō-ji which is the oldest temple from Tokyo.
    The interpretation of the fortune is tricky though, I'm not 100% sure, but I think it has to do with the meaning of numbers and how they sound, 4 in japanese it's `shi` or `yon`, `shi` also means "death" in japanese, so the number 4 is considered bad luck, because people associate it with death.
    Same for 9, nine is `ku` in japanese, which also means "suffering", so 9 is a bad luck number because people associate it with suffering, Asahi got 49, a combination of the 2, which it's like the worst possible result lol

    • @carrietay7704
      @carrietay7704 2 года назад +15

      I think it depends on the translation used. The ones I watched on Netflix just said "Curse" which made it clearer.
      The Japanese will keep the slips that are positive and get rid of the bad luck by tying those slips on trees or ropes (next scene) in the temple before leaving.
      Praying for a good year is a common practice across Asia although in some countries, it is done at the Lunar New Year instead.

    • @DrumBandQc
      @DrumBandQc 2 года назад +20

      Not exactly, but close enough. You are right that "4" and "9" are bad omens, but the paper actually indicates what kind of fortune you have in the "luck" category.
      So, Asahi got "curse" in the "luck" category. That's not the only reason he is mad though.
      If you get a good fortune, you bring it home and you are happy. If you get a really bad fortune, you can tie it to a tree in the Temple and leave it there to not bring the "great curse" as it's called with you.
      Asahi got a regular curse, which you cannot tie to the tree and have to bring back home, so he is really unhappy about it. I had the same thing this year, so I know what he is feeling haha

    • @cowjuicethepallytank
      @cowjuicethepallytank 2 года назад +6

      To add onto what everyone else is saying here, there are even more "ceremonial practices" that they didn't show here, such as cleaning your hands and mouth with water when you visit the shrine to cleanse yourself of bad omens and to prepare yourself to recieve the blessing of the god of the shrine. They also will have smoke you can cleanse yourself with as well by wafting it towards/over you.
      They also skipped ringing the full clap, bow, clap, clap procedure and ringing the bell and just stuck with the claps in the clip. Lastly, the way the fortunes are chose is often by shaking a container full of sticks with the number of a drawer on each of them. So you will pay your 100 yen, shake the container to dispense your stick, then open the drawer which will hold your fortune!

When she says they'll do fine without the volleyball gods' help and during the bath scene where she said, "'when' (and not if) we win the first match." Hey coach, back with more knowledge on Japan as someone who lives here. New Year's in Japan is equivalent in importance to Chinese New Year to Chinese people and they have many traditions relating to foods and customs. One custom you see in this episode is hatsumode which is the first shrine visit of the year. Japanese people go to shrines often to pay respect to the gods and pray for good luck for things ranging from health, success in studies, monetary gain, success with business, good childbirth, etc. You can also pull fortunes called omikuji and get good luck charms like the one that Daichi received for the Shiratorizawa match from his classmate Michimiya.

    22:30 Innoshita is a 2nd year! Also, I love that we get a little backstory on Shimizu. The spotlight is clearly on the players, but getting at least a little bit about our manager, and I love even more that all the character backstories are about persevering through adversity in one way or another.

    Coach, there isn't a single animator for the entire episode. You have key animators that animate their allotted scenes and then you have the supervisors that correct any iffy art. The schedule for Haikyuu suffered towards the end so the supervisors couldn't correct all the bad art which is why you're seeing wild fluctuations in the quality.

    • @kay-jay1581
      @kay-jay1581 2 года назад +2

      I keep getting confused why he talks about a single animator. Is he talking about the key animator? or the team as a whole.
      It’s an animated series it would be physically imposible for a single person to animate a whole show so… For the first time as a viewer, I don’t get what is he talking about.

I love the action-packed episodes as well, but these moments that highlight the players' lives outside of Volleyball are special in their own way. Seeing everyone's ways of dealing with the anticipation energy or anxiety--hearing about what they're worried about and thankful for outside of Volleyball. All of these things help give Haikyuu!! characters a depth of their own.

    The fact that Asahi had another timeline or developmental axis than some of the first years makes a lot of sense. The first years, are well.. first years. Incredibly talented and coming into their own. Asahi was already an accomplished Ace at that level, and had gone thru those first two years already but then had his spirit broken by "the Wall".
    Reaching game maturity and peak talent is a different path with slightly different challenges compared to having had the edge, lost it but now found it again.

    The reason pulling a 49 is so funny to Suga and Daichi is that 4 and 9 are two numbers which are both considered the most unlucky numbers to Japanese people. 4 is sometimes pronounced shi which also means death, while 9 is sometimes pronounced ku which means suffering.

    I find the scene with Tanaka and Nishinoya really funny. It's not like it's there whole personality. They don't make a point of making the girls feel they staring or anything, if that makes sense? They are conscious that Shimizu is taking a bath but they don't try to spy her in the bath - and that's a huge anime cliché. So they're cool, in my opinion.

    In Japan, it's a superstition that your first dream of the year, the hatsuyume, tells you what kind of luck you'll have that year based on its contents. So, for Daichi to have a dream that stressful at the beginning of the year would be considered a really bad omen.
    Which I think makes Shimizu's quote so much more impactful, that even if the gods aren't on their side, Karasuno will still compete and do their best.

    I know not everyone will be comfortable with it, but as a girl, I'll be honest. If my high schooler self accidentally slipped and landed right into Kuroo or Ushiwaka's arms (and abs) I'd be feeling exactly like how Nishinoya felt in that moment. It's totally normal for someone his age, and also, despite being a thirsty teenager, he actually doesn't do anything perverse that crosses the line. I appreciate how Furudate-sensei wrote all types of characters, from ones like Noya to those like Kageyama who show 0 reactions to anything possibly romantically/sexually attractive.

Academics are important for those who are pursuing careers that require it, but having joys in your life that build your self and energize you are needed for when life, work, and school get overwhelming.

    I think there are 52 teams in the tournament. There is at least one team representing each of the 47 prefectures in Japan. However, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka and Hokkaido each get a 2nd team due to their size/population. And then there is a team for the host prefecture as well, which in this case is also Tokyo, adding a 3rd slot, which is the slot that Nekoma won in the OVA episodes. At least this was the allotment for the women's version of this tournament in 2021, a listing of which I found on the internet.
    The "Spring" tournament is in January, hence its proximity to New Years day. It used to be in March (hence the name) but they moved it to allow 3rd year students to have a better chance at participating. The japanese school year goes from April to March the next year, and usually 3rd year high school students would be preparing to graduate at that point. (japanese school system is 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of middle school and 3 years of high school).
    The first half of the episode is taken up by how the students spend New Years day. New Years in japan is traditionally a holiday that you spend with your family and often travel back to your hometown if you live somewhere else, similar to Thanksgiving in the U.S., though of course that isn't quite that relevant for the high school kids in Haikyuu. Most of that is encapsulated in seeing Nishinoya playing a traditional japanese game called Hanetsuki with his grandfather.
    The episode starts with Daichi having the first dream of the year, which is said to portent how your year will be. He has a bad dream and thus is worried about it. Later we see the upperclassmen visit a Shinto shrine, which is also a tradition in Japan called "Hatsumode", the first shrine visit of the year. You make an offering of a small amount of money by dropping it into a large collection box, perform a short ritual (bow twice, clap twice, bow once) and make a small prayer (before the last bow).
    At the shrine you can also pull fortunes called O-mikuji, which list your overall luck for the year as well as your luck in specific areas of your life. If you received a negative fortune, you can tie it to a tree or specifically prepared walls of metal wires at the shrine, which is meant to bind the misfortune to it. You can see a small glimpse of that int he show, implying that this is what Asahi did.

    something about the timeline(correct me if I'm wrong)
    The Japanese school's academic year start at March or April and have 3 semesters.
    There are 2 major tournament in the year.
    The first one is Inter-high school championship. This tournament is for many sports not only volleyball. It happens in July or August, but the selection in each prefecture usually happens in June. (this is the tournament where Karasuno lost to Aoba Johsai for the first time)
    Another tournament is Spring tournament. This is only for volleyball. The tournament happens in January 5th to Jan 10th(which is the time where the next few episodes happens) Originally the spring tournament happens in March, that's why it's Spring tournament. but then considering the 3rd year students have to work on the college entrance examination, it move to January. The selection for the spring tournament in their prefecture have 2 stages.
    The first stage is in the August, teams that are best 8 in inter-high don't have to participate in the first stage. Karasuno are not in best 8 so they have to fight for a spot. that's when they fight against the 2-meter giant.
    The second stage is in October, the best 16 fight for the only one spot. that's when they fight against Aoba Johsai again and win, and also the game between Karasuno and Shiratorizawa happened at that time.
