That animation scene where the short player jumps super high is actually animated by Takashi Mukouda, a famous animator in the industry. He has a very unique style that can be seen at first as a bit weird because he exagerates the proportions a lot, but he is a master in flow and dynamism.
Some animators are even called in as guests and do just 1 scene, sometimes its because their style is very fitting for the episode, sometimes they just say "go have fun and do something cool af"
It's becoming more standard to have special key animators for certain scenes now in Haikyuu, since it is also becoming more common in the industry overall. These tyeps of sequences are called Sakuga, and it can be a bit frustrating to see massive changes in artstyle between two scenes sometimes, but you get used to it eventually.

THIS!! No disrespect to Coach but his remarks regarding the animation this season are many of the times just wrong and their frequency just takes me out of the video lol
Him knowing a decent amount about how animation works should've also made him recognise that "animation quality" is not downgraded but the line count has been decreased so that an animator doesn't have to put in extra time in making the characters look like the one's they got in the pre-S4 design sheets.

He adapted to this low energy style by using Kunimi on the final stages of the games, Kageyama even talks about how he never saw Kunimi giving the amount of energy that he gave in this game. Oikawa noticed that Kunimi likes to save energy to the important moments.

You're right, Hinata is one of the most intelligent characters, but I would say that Hinata is simple. Not in the way that his character is written to be easy or basic. His motivations and thoughts aren't complicated, he knows what he wants. I wouldn't say that him being simple makes him stupid or less of a good character, but he is straightforward. He's extremely intelligent, it takes a lot to be able to work with Kageyama right off the bat and get along with everyone he comes across. He also learns through pure observation through the beginning of this season, and in general he learns extremely quickly. I feel like Hinata always takes the simplest route to get to where he needs to be, and since people often mistake complexity for intelligence or truth, they make the same mistake with Hinata.

    • @skull1161
      @skull1161 Год назад

Academics are important but there's a lot more things you can be intelligent about than knowing certain math equations. Being emotionally intelligent like Hinata lets him become friends with literally anyone. Just think about it, without Hinata would Kageyama ever really start changing his game? He might have been benched even. Hinata depends on Kageyama, but Kageyama definitely needed someone to get him to play like a member of the team after middle school. We see something like this again with Yachi, she might not have become a manager if Hinata didn't push her to confront her mom.

@@hopewelch9421 What it sort of comes down to is: Atsumu and Kageyama both set the balls for their team where it should be. Before, Kageyama set the ball where HE thought his hitters should be. Now he is at a point where he sets the balls suited towards his hitter's liking. Which is an imporvement. For Atsumu, he sets the ball to his hitters like, but if they were playing at the abosulte best of their ability. He has an understanding of how good his hitters are and where they should be, so he is forcing them to push to the best of their ability.

Because Kageyama was burned by Kitagawa Daiichi when he was the "King of the Court" - setting impossible sets based on where he best thought the hitters should be to get around the block- and due to Karasuno's friendly and easy-going style - and because of Oikawa's "mentorship" of giving your hitters the sets that they want and can maximize- Kageyama learned and adjusted to be a Goody Two Shoes on court. He asks his hitters what they want and gives them the sets they like.
      *spoiler warning*
Whereas Atsumu always, always without fail, gives the set that makes his hitters feel like they're better players. The set that pushes them to be better, and they feel like they're playing at their best. Atsumu would break his body getting so low to the ground to give his brother the best set. He is aggressive but he is dedicated to his hitters. So he is annoyed/humored/confused when a rumored great setter is essentially a pushover on court.
When Kageyama becomes the Serene Tyrant (all these translations might be different though lol) with Tanaka, he sets a difficult set ala King would, but one that he believes Tanaka can get sort of like Goody Two Shoes would have accomodated. The marriage of the two resulted in the winning play style.

So the reason they’re staring at Kunimi is because Hinata realized that Kunimi’s teams always did better even though he appears to be lazy. By watching Kunimi, Hinata started picking up on the little things the “lazy” Kunimi was doing that gave his team the advantage, such as purposefully passing the ball higher to give his team more time to settle themselves and get their energy back. So he then told Hyakuzawa to try it to make sure he was right about his observation.

I think in terms of the narrative, Washijo's coaching style actually says a lot about Hinata's talent. I get the sense (though subtext in dialogue can be harder to understand clearly through the language barrier) that Washijo has *always* wanted to believe that smaller players can shine, because he himself is small, but has convinced himself his whole life that bigger and stronger is better and that's all there is to it. He has to believe that or else he must face the fact that he didn't believe in his own ability and work hard enough to compete. When Hinata completely confirms and realizes his hope that smaller players can compete, Washijo concedes and changes his coaching style (subtly! but his assistant coach picks up on the difference). The fact that Washijo is as old as he is and hasn't changed his coaching style until now just tells us that Hinata is truly a once-in-a-lifetime (Washijo's lifetime!) player.

      Spoiler warning:
This is why I think the Japanese national team that we see towards the end of the manga would be best suited for a 6-2 rotation, where there are two setters who pull double-duty as wing spikers when in the front row. Kageyama is easily a great spiker, and he can block with the best of them, and Atsumu (the other setter on said national team) is a spiker half the time anyway because of the exchange plays he and Osamu do all the time. So yeah, I'd definitely go with that.

Re: Kunimi's style of not overworking himself being what preserved enough energy to chase the ball at the end to win them the game. Kageyama was taken aback by seeing Kunimi exert himself, because he'd never been able to inspire that level of commitment in his former middle school teammates, reinforcing that Oikawa's still a better overall setter/game maker despite Kageyama's overwhelming talent.
Now with Miya Atsumu's "goody two-shoes" comment, it's hinting that Kageyama only adjusts himself to fit others (possibly as an over-correction of his previously demanding "King"-like ways.)

I also think Hinata becoming a ball boy also humbled him without him really realizing it as he has been a starter for a while and been working on his "star power" rather than his fundamentals this experience has taught him there is a lot more to being a good player than what he has been doing. showing him he has his downsides and how much he has to improve.

It'd kind of funny when you say that because they are still first years and hinata is still relatively new to organized volleyball compared to a lot of people. Idk if he was focused on star power , I think it had to do with what Karasuno itself needed. Ukai even mentioned that because of what they need from him , he hasn't been able to get as good as he could which goes back to the balancing act that coaches need to master with their players. I'm just glad that this happened because of his initiative , if he didn't want to constantly get better this never would have happened

The way I looked at it Hinata was desperate to play as a starter because of his middle school experience with Kageyama and not because of arrogance. Specifically from the "what have you been doing for the last 3 years?" comment. He thought that if he left the court for one second he'll be wasting even more years (it's why Tsuki's comment about him wasting time hits him so hard). I don't think Hinata ever forgot that he doesn't know the basic as he brings it up all the time. He always goes "I'm useless without Kageyama" and even Aone knows that's what he's struggling with. The problem with Hinata is that he doesn't know how to get better. In Karasuno coach Ukai mentioned just last episode they had been stunting Hinata's growth in a way. It's why Hinata was so desperate to go into camp. I think the best part of this arc is teaching Hinata that he can also learn off the court and that just because he's not playing it doesn't mean he's falling behind.

I know this would be a little early, but in the last match against Inarizaki, Tsukki's monologue on how Hinata was doing all the jumping all the time and probably even more when he was nearly out of steam and getting irritated with Inarizaki's middle blocker and setter. And the part when he expects Hinata would be behind him ready to receive the ball from Suna as well as Hinata's monologue on how he already know all along how good Tsukki was at blocking. They both feed off each other without realising how much a unit they've become as middle blockers for Karasuno.

He doesn't explicitly say it in the Japanese line, so that's probably why they didn't put it in the subs. That said, the official subs can be really inaccurate or lacking context sometimes. As a professional translator it bothers me so much, because there's so much detail that non-Japanese speaking viewers miss because of these inaccuracies.

The main point of Hinata's advice was, I feel, to slow the game down. If the rhythm is very alert, you're not always able to keep up, have time to prepare to spike, have time to look at the court, etc. Simply by passing high, there's a bit of extra time to breathe, rest, regain your composure etc -- not as much pressure as trying to run a really quick offense, I guess?

With the anime industry, there are several types of directors. The reason why the still images look so good sometimes is because most of them are handled by people we call as "sakkan", (art/animation director). Their job is to basically correct/redraw frames that are off-model in an episode as much as possible, which is easy for still images since they're only one picture with pan up shots. However, this is a different case for moving shots. Since there are plenty of drawings to correct during these scenes, sakkans tend to not have enough time to correct every single one in an episode due to the tight deadlines.

When Hinata gives him feedback because he’s not doing his best at receiving and keeping up, I’m sure he also sees himself in him a bit. If Hinata wasn’t a ball boy, he wouldn’t know how to receive and react as fast, and he would feel just as down, except there would be no one there to help him. So I think it’s touching that Hinata can use the experience he’s gained from being a ball boy to help what is basically a version of himself (a one dimensional player) become more well rounded

Kunimi was already featured in previous seasons as being a player that was very good at conserving energy, and was one of the primary reasons that Aoba Johsai beat Karasuno in Season 1, because when everyone else was tired in the 31 point deuce, he was able to press on the gas when it mattered.
His energy conservation was also highlighted as an important lesson for Hinata during the camp, who is a player that you could argue expends way too much energy,

I'm so excited for your reaction on Atsumu, the second year setter from Inarizaki. I hope you won't miss judge him and his way of playing.
    *Spoilers↝*
I really love most of the Haikuuu setters and how each of them have different ways of doings the sane job.
Like how Kageyama is awkward and straightforward, he asks how to make the set for that specific person better.
Sugawara is a really simple as setter, but as an overall teammate his presence is reassuring and helps the team in mentally tough situations.
Oikawa is also straightforward, but he knows how to bring 100% out of everyone he plays with.
While Kenma might not be the best setter, the way the analyses the opposite team and plays together with his team is amazing.
Akaashi is amazing! Making quick choises depending on Bokutos mood and basically leading the team even when he's not the captain is so pleasing to watch.
Shirabu isn't outstanding which is exactly what he wants, he wants to be able to set to a simple power and see it crush their opponents.
Atsumu is amazing, he does the best he can as a setter and puts himself in tough situations only so his sets could be as easy to hit as possible. I love how he gets frustrated when he does everything within his power make the set easy to hit but the hitter still fails. He has every right to be frustrated! If the set is really easy to hit but the hitter fails, then the problem is in the hitter themself.
No, I'm not adding Koganekawa and Semi to my rant, as they both are pretty unknown to be as setters. I'm also not adding Seijoh's libero, because he obviously no longer is a setter.

Hi Coach, just wanted to give some background on why food in anime looks so good.
Back in 2006, there was an anime called "Yoake Mae Yori Ruriiro na" where they had a super low budget. There is one scene where one of the characters is preparing ingredients, and in particular she's trying to slice a cabbage. The problem is the cabbage was actually just a green ball and when cut down the middle, there was just a spiral in the center to show any sort of detail. This scene became so controversial that it became a meme known as "Quality Cabbage" and anime fans basically boycotted that animation studio. Ever since then, food in anime is basically required to be at a higher quality than everything else just to avoid another "Quality Cabbage" incident.
You noted that the still shots look a lot better than some of the shots with a lot of movement. This is because Haikyuu the anime is adapted from Haikyuu the manga, where each page is just a black and white still shot drawn by the author himself. The manga panels are extremely beautiful and one of the things I appreciate about the manga that is missed in the anime is every time two teams face off against each other, there's a page dedicated to showing the roster of both teams with the 6 (7) starting players names, player role, starting position on the court, etc. This is missed in the anime and in my opinion makes learning everyone's names a lot harder.

I like when you analyze the animation in detail, because I'm into animation too, but sometime you go overboard with it and start pausing during motion and start analyzing the in betweens, You can find a lot of the frames being drawn in some weird proportions and shapes and that doesn't make it an animation error, the exaggeration usually is to cover for the motion blur effect some other things. Plus, if you found some weird faces or exaggerated expressions, it's possible that it was copied from the source material (the manga), so those expressions are made to stay loyal to the source material

17:20 Small player with high jumps and amazing spikes
I do wonder why he would be a great reference for Kageyama, who just so happens to a set for a tiny volleyball monster
okaybeing a jerk with sarcasm aside: the white haired guy (Hoshiumi Korai - Korai is his first name I believe) is sort of a "pro" Hinata so being able to adapt to Korai would be a great way to possibly improve his combos with Hinata down the line
21:08 Kunimi is nothing if efficient
You kind of hit the nail on the head
In season 1 Seijoh vs Karasuno, when Karasuno won, Kunimi got a flashback where Oikawa called Kunimi out for trying to slack off, but also made sure to let Kunimi know that Oikawa would make him work twice as hard when the rest of the team is running on fumes
29:45 How many of your players would do well to remember to "Take it easy"?
As the show says I can imagine it's sth easily overlooked and can change the flow of the game
    31:40 Yepp
Hinata is looking at Kunimi cuz Kunimi has a similar passing technique to Wakatoshi(Ushiwaka)
Kogane is watching cuz Hyakuzawa's improvement due to Hinata's advice to "do the same as Kunimi" might help him improve as well
Kogane is a first year and fairly inexperienced as a setter still, so absorbing skills from around him will be a great help

I actually don't think the animation worsened, it's just that they took a different approach, straying from the realism of seasons 1-3 and adopting the traditional anime style that gets extra cartoony in dynamic scenes to emphasize fast and chaotic movements. It's almost like their version of motion blur

    • @omkarjsuvarna
      @omkarjsuvarna 2 года назад +18

No it actually is. It's mostly visible through the body proportions of the characters. I understand the art style is new, but the body dynamics while in motion and body proportions are pretty bad compared to previous seasons. And on top of that the background illustrations are beautiful so it makes animation look dull.

Not so far. There are some weird things but maybe not so bad. But 2nd part of this season is REALLY BAD. As in, it kinda takes you out of it. Haikyuu has us viewers accostumed to such good quality that a "normal" quality or "below average" quality is really really bad.

    • @Lari_A

it definitely worsened. you can definitely tell there are less frames drawn, making the movement clunky, which isn't good considering the art style looks clunky too, A LOT less detailed. not to mention they re-use the same animations to an extent that it's ridiculous in this season, but i guess the animators did what they could considering the pandemic.

Something I think is important to keep in mind about the animation is the fact that I'm pretty sure for season 4 we still only have the TV broadcast version at the moment. While the other season, are possibly using the home release versions.
Due to the speed of needed to get anime episodes out, to save time some anime chose to put a lesser focus on the inbetween animation for TV broadcast. Then they go back and smooth out those parts for the home release version. That's why there can be such a huge contrast between the keyframe images and the inbetweens.
When the home release for season 4 came out in Japan people were posting the comparisons showing some of the improved images. We'll have to see once the US home release version comes out if the streaming services will update their copies.

You can see it takes anywhere from 3-6 months after an episode airs to it being released for home viewing. And they use that time to fix what they can. They might not be able to make it perfect but there can be some definite improvements and more details can be added during that process.

31:40 That's actually Koganegawa (the tall Date Tech setter) with Hinata, not Tsukki. The reason that they're staring at Kunimi is because Kunimi was the one who was doing the really high passes to start with, which they see as a smart technique, so they're now closely observing him to see if they can learn anything else from his play, haha. He seems to be like Kenma where he doesn't like the feeling of physical strain from going "All Out". When he went to Aoba Johsai, you might remember, during the match against Karasuno, Oikawa is shown telling him that it was ok that he slacked off during the match but if the time came that he was the only one on the team with energy he would use him mercilesly. So he prefers to reserve his energies nd only spend them if needed even in a maatch. Kinda difficult payer but Oikawa even found a great use for him. That's why he is the captain.

When Kagayama says 'good reference', he means that Hoshiumi is a good reference of how Hinata should be, since they are both short.

Also, back in Season 1 when Kurasuno played Aoba Johsai, Kunimi was a big impact in the third set. Simply because he conserved energy throughout the match, he was able to play hard at the end of the game to close out.

11:15 there's a thing here i've only noticed after rewatching this series. Initially Hinata thought that Noya is a libero because he's good at receiving, not because of his height, as everyone else assumes. So, when someone else asks Hinata if he's a libero, naturally he thinks it's because they think he's good at receiving, but it's just because he's short. That's adorable.

I love the art style of season 4 only because they look much more similar to the manga but I can't deny the fact that they look very off when playing. Because in the manga, you can kind of see their muscles as athletes properly but they look soooo thin in the anime.

i think kunimi actually "goes all out" in his own way. while he didnt run after the ball in the practice game, he made a lot of smart plays during the 2vs2 games. he was the example hinata gave to hyakuzawa: "keep it easy and pass it high" i think this is why despite hinata and koganegawa chewed kunimi earlier about not going all out, they both start watching him in the end. (watching him to study his moves)

Hinata being ball boy was really the turning point where he went from only spike-happy to being a more holistic player (starting to, anyway)

Coach... which type of coaching do you prefer..
    1. Shirotorizawa- simple is best. A simple offnc play
    2. Karasuno- fast offnc trick plays try new things be reckless
    3. Nekoma- defensive team
    4. Date tech- serve and block
    5. Seijoh ( oikawa kpop) - all round play
Please answer also which type of play your team have?

I think the thing about Hinata being a ball boy is he needed to be humbled. Like he never considered improving his passing or receiving or serving because it was “fun” but in reality if it was even just fine, not even good, he might have gotten the invite to the National Youth camp as well but you can’t be actively poor at all those things and expect to keep up with everyone else.

Hi coach! I discovered your channel about a month ago and have been watching all of your Haikyuu reactions, since Haikyuu is my favorite anime. I have mixed feelings about volleyball. My family has a tradition of playing it at every family gathering during the summer, but I’m not very coordinated or athletic, so I don’t really like playing. Since I’m no good, it’s not very fun to me. After watching Haikyuu (multiple times) I got a new appreciation for the sport. This last summer, I wanted to try practicing volleyball and setting, since it’s very interesting to me.
However, my cousins wanted me to play actual games with them when I wasn’t quite ready yet. Something about me is, when I make a mistake, I beat myself up about it for hours. So when I play with them I feel awful the entire time, and I started to dread volleyball again.
I like practicing. A lot. I’d love to practice setting for hours on end, but as soon as there’s other people on the other side of the net and it becomes competitive I get extremely anxious.
I doubt I’ll ever get good at it or if I’ll end up on a team, but I’d love to learn to be a setter. Plus it’s probably too late to, I’m a junior in high school.
But your reactions and words have given me a lot of courage and the desire to try practicing it again, so thank you.

I love your comment about how Hinata learned to slow down and think things over instead of just mindlessly run after the ball. As a teacher I feel some kids panic when they desperately want to get better and they just tunnel vision. Lots of practicing the same things over and over, lots of tears but not knowing that's what is causing the problem. The ability to slow down and think is so important. It lets you teach yourself things and give yourself feedback. Honestly one of my favorite lessons I learn from Haikyuu.

No spoilers but this episode has to be my favorite from Haikyuu, there are a lot of moments that are exciting, emotional, and satisfying, but the fact that this scene with Hinata has more impact to me Bc it just so much of Hinata’s progress and he got to use what he learned in the biggest moments coming too, it just gets me!

Hinata’s “take it easy” advice is just a tip to slow down the game to give each player a clear and level head. When you go fast and hard you typically aren’t thinking and it’s more tunnel visioned. You’ll understand in part 2 of season 4.

The whole point of passing the ball super high is that 2meter guy gets to catch his breath and can actually do a good approaching run and get a spike in.

great animation doesn't mean how "proportionate" or how "good" the character is. what you said about how its a "downgrade" just because the proportion is funny kind of make sense, but the scene where the short white hair guy (kourai) jumps is actually great animation, its just a different art style. that scene wasn't going for making the character as proportionate as possible, its to show the incredible height and speed at which he can jump. i actually think this animation style is better suited especially for the upcoming arcs, as it really captures how the manga accentuates the character's movement

I remember binging through this part because there was so much “story” and not alota games so I kept wanting to get to the matches. It’s kinda Nice to watch this slowed and with commentary. Noticing a lot of things I didn’t before
