I think Kenma, as an analytical person thinks it's impossible for him to feel the excitement and reckless desire like Tora and Hinata. I like how he look at things he doesn't understand or people who are so different then him and think this is something admirable and interesting. As a video gamer he looks at "guts" as an "ultimate move", he really values it even more then strategy or skill. I think that's the cutest thing.

It's easy to forget since we're used to it, but visual cues like that don't go over too well if you're watching a medium you're unfamiliar with. Coach Donny isn't a total normie who doesn't know a thing about anime, but he's not an avid watcher either. Understandably, things like this would be lost on him. It's probably difficult for him to just distinguish between voices. I know that sounds silly, but I guarantee you're forgetting what your early experiences watching subs were like. I believe Kenma's reverence for Hinata comes originally from his fast quick which reminded him of a move from a video game it was so ridiculous; even though the rest of Hinata's fundamentals were lacking he could change the game with that one move. Secondly, after the training camp, Hinata's rapid evolution and improvement in all aspects of his game makes Kenma think of him as someone who's not going to stop moving until they are the best (like a video game character, someone unrealistic), and that he has to keep up with him and come up with a strategy to beat him at the same time. Kenma is the most observant player on the court, so it's blinding how fast Hinata is improving because he's seen such dramatic changes in the course of one year, so he thinks of him as a Final Boss, like he's someone from a video game. This also reaches to the rest of Karasuno, Kenma sees them all as ridiculous team that never stops being aggressive even when they're exhausted, and improves at a fast rate as well.

    • @hugogamboas.5550
      @hugogamboas.5550 2 года назад +6

Also consider: after Hinata was shut down by Inuoka, a normal 1st year rookie would’ve given up, but not Hinata. He was EXCITED to overcome that wall. This also adds to Hinata’s videogame-like-ness

  • @TrianaNero

The one thinking at 27:10 is Tora, you were right! Because Kenma isn't as invested in volleyball, he doesn't quite think of himself as equal to the rest of the team in regards to, in this case, "guts" - he thinks it's something beyond him. Tora, however, disagrees and stresses how Kenma always sees things through till the end, which he thinks is also a way of "showing guts" (he probably came to understand and value it after getting to know Kenma).
Not quite sure if you caught it or not, but the surprise at Kenma's last toss and Fukunaga's "oh" is because the pass was off, and yet Kenma made the effort and jumped to set the ball as perfectly as he could despite his fatigue - Fukunaga was really moved by that :"D
Really glad that you enjoyed this match and the themes it encompassed so much - makes me even more excited for the content to come, because Haikyuu just keeps getting deeper and deeper, more thought-provoking with each game.

I think they explained earlier in the season that they use
A-pass to refer to passes that go right on top of the position of the setter, so he doesn't have to move too much to set
B-pass to refer to passes that are around the 3 meter line, so the setter has to move a little to set

Definitely relate to feeling responsibility and getting more motivated when someone around you tries hard. I'm not an athlete, but I've experienced it a couple times at uni, where we'd have this rare prof who'd be very respectful to the students, going out of his/her way to make the classes interesting - and in this case even if I weren't as interested in the subject, I'd still put in way more effort than usual and do my best to score well just to kind of "pay back" the prof for their hard work. The same applies to classmates - even though studying isn't a team sport, on rare occasions we get ready for tests together, and I really wish there was someone as passionate about the subject as I am, cause I can tell that others aren't. Even though I don't have a competitive mindset or a passion to rival those of Kageyama and Hinata (so I can't say I relate to them well), in those moments I understand just how precious and insanely motivating that kind of partnership when both of you are just crazy about something can be.

I think Kenma's fascination of Hinata comes from his gamer's attitude. As a gamer he sees and analyzes his opponent's mechanics and tries to shut it down and outplay them. But in case of Hinata, every time Kenma found a way to stop Hinata's "mechanics", Hinata can overcome this and create another mechanics that will become a challenge to Kenma and so the loop goes on. Though this is my own interpretation of Kenma's remark as Hinata being a "super boss."

One of my favorite quotes from this season was when Kuroo says, "Looks like their plan was to tire out Kenma. Too bad we're Nekoma. We'll just get used to it". Which is cool because that is exactly Nekoma's play style. They have great defense, and adjust to what their opponents do in order to win.

      Manga spoilers///
I think his and Hirugami from Kamomedai's mini-arcs are just very well-written and add so much more depth and reality to the story. Not everyone who plays the sport loves it passionately, and they don't have to. And ppl can have very different motivations or ways to motivate themselves, and each of those is valid. But you don't see this side of sports very often in stories, and even when it's there it's often not in a positive/neutral light. So I really appreciate how it's shown in Haikyuu.

If I recall correctly, during their training arc together in season 2 (training camp), Kenma hinted at his fascination towards Hinata by saying something like "Shoyo always tries something new", and I feel like that's what makes him feel excited about the thought of playing him, perhaps because as a gamer he loves that extra-challenge to spark his excitement towards the game. Kuroo even asked Kenma if he'd feel more motivated if he played in the same team as Hinata, and Kenma said he'd never be able to, because he simply wouldn't be able to keep up with Hinata's demands, to which Kuroo replied that perhaps it was better if he remained a rival then. I absolutely love the relationship between Kenma and Hinata: they're total opposites in so many ways, and yet they became friends, and they both manage to keep challenging each other to grow.

Kunimi was the guy who was putting in low effort most of the time, but toward the end of the game, he worked harder because he had the most energy left. Kageyama hated him for not trying hard enough, but imo they just have different life/game philosophies.

The best thing about the dichotomy between Kenma and Tora is how they dyed their hair, Tora dyes it blonde in the middle, while Kenma dies the roots. It's nice allegory to the idea that while they are quite different, together they are stronger as they fill in each others gaps.
It's also established in the flashbacks that they don't die their hair until they actually become friends, and Tora who see's Kenma as a friend first also dies his hair first.

Also think that Kenma’s strategy to throw off the blockers is based around the fact that Nekoma realizes they are trying to tire out Kenma. Since Sarukawa “smelled blood” they think they’re close and believe that Kenma is at his limit, however Kenma is smart enough to abuse that by making Sarukawa believe that he will go for the easy set like Kuroo or Lev because the receive is off, but instead set to the opposite after luring them in.

  • @CleetjeLovesHusky
    @CleetjeLovesHusky 2 года назад +47

I was confused about the passes for a while so I looked it up. Apparently it is a bit different depending what country but it refers to the quality of the passes towards the setter.
A 3 or C-pass is a pass that is off the net and the setter has to move far to get it, limiting their options usually to wherever they’re facing.
A 2 or a B-pass is a slightly better pass but the setter still has to adjust to get under it and does not have every option.
A 1 or an A-pass is a perfect pass where a setter does not have to adjust much and can set all their options.
Basically Nekoma has been "babying" their setter Kenma by giving him A passes as much as possible so he has to move very little in their game. Saruwaka's goal is to lower the quality of Nekoma's passes to a B or C in order to have Kenma run around as far as possible so he gets exhausted, while also limiting his setting options and making him predictable.

The people saying "Crush him" in that scene if you are still wondering are the Sarukawa players and the coach. They are so focused on the game plan that has worked for them all year that they forget to adjust imo. What I have to remind myself all the time (because its High School teams in Japan) is essentially all of these teams are like the equivalent of a state champ competing at nationals. Every match is like if the best team from Nebraska was playing against the best team that year from Kentucky or something like that. Its why all the teams are just THAT good!
Also later in the episode the person speaking about Kenma is Tora (AKA Tenakas twin). He is saying that no matter what happened or who was watching the Kenma never quit or gave up. Even if he was last to finish in a drill, running or whatever it was, he never didn't see it through to the end. And that is why Tora thinks that Kenma does actually have guts. Even if Kenma doesn't think that he does, to Tora and the rest of his teammates, he has shown that he will work as hard as he can to see things through to the end. And thats having guts and determination.

It's not a mistranslation, in the translation industry we call it a localization (and no, the example above is NOT a good one). Sometimes the client asks for those when they think something is too specific to one culture or it won't make sense simply translated and they want it to be more relatable or make more sense to a global audience. Anime Tip:
Most of us anime regulars know this already, but Coach, the face they zoom in on during the introspection is the one who's talking. Always. All the time. And if they are talking about someone they will zoom in on that persons face too.
So it was Tora talking about Kenma :)

My little brothers baseball team used to thank their supporters in the stands after every game. The team would line up facing the stands and clap and say thank you. He plays travel ball now and they don’t do it very often anymore. I wonder if it’s just something they do when the players are younger to teach them to have gratitude to the people who come and support them.

I wonder how many people know how much a mental sport volleyball is. Everyone can tell you don't worry or you can apologize all you want, but when you mess up that point, that feeling and responsibility is all on you. It's easy to say let's get the next point, but it takes a trained mind to execute that though. Even worst when people are purposely targeting yo. But it's these moments when you start practicing harder to get the next one and all that doubt goes away when your mind and body syncs to execute a great receive/set/spike. (:

Guts is an interesting concept, I think it not only comes from perseverance but also enjoyment. Years ago while playing football, if the ball got past the defence and was one on one with the goalkeeper I would view it as a forgone conclusion. However, I then joined a team that had just merged from 2 others to form a stronger one. I realised not only did I have to put the work in, but I actually enjoyed it, I had to work hard to get the ball because everyone was so good but I kept pushing. Eventually it got to a point where I, who used to be the slowest in the team, was faster than most people, I could cover if anyone got past. I made many important clearances and tackles, and for a while, even if it was only a season or two, I felt like the protagonist. Unfortunately, that team got low on numbers and I had to move somewhere else, now I’m no longer as motivated and REALLY slow. but I can read the play really well so I don’t have to do as much running. That last bit applies to all sports, if you can read the game well, you’ll have to do less to win, if you want to get better at this, pick a favourite team if you don’t have one already and watch all of their games, even if you don’t watch the entire thing but instead watch an extended highlights video or something, that’s fine. But remember the more you watch the more you’ll learn even if it’s subconsciously

If they win against Inarizaki, they will play Nekoma!! But they have to win this round first... also, I believe there is insight about what Kenma thinks about Hinata in the previous episode when the Nekoma 3rd years have a conversation in their hotel lobby. They said something to the affect of Kenma being unable to figure out Hinata yet as Hinata is such an excellent and athletic player who is always surprising others with his moves, and that motivates him in a similar way to how he becomes fixated on a video game, trying to figure out all the different levels and plays

coach, the reason sarukawas coach aritaka didnt change the gameplan is because he is banking on a war of atrition in which he has confidence his team can at least beat kenma in stamina. He didnt feel the need to adapt especially since he couldnt know nekomas strategy. thats why instead of the match ending in a battle of concepts like most of karasunos this one ended with nekoma running a normal play and surprising the opponents. love your content keep going coach.

I think the main duality shown between Tora and Kenma boils down to two different ways of thinking, both culminating in the same conclusion. Tora is all about effort, pushing yourself and "guts". While Kenma is more strategy, thinking and skill. At the end, both Kenma and Tora come to the same conclusion. You need both. Tora eventually learns to think like Kenma, is more careful with his plays, with his passing. And eventually Kenma shows guts to get the final point. Great players have both aspects, train like hell, but train with a purpose. There is no point in shooting 1000 3 pointers, if you are not correcting or improving your shooting form. There is no point theorycrafting your shoot technique, if you dont actually practice.

Just a small observation. Coach you seem to be a bit more confused in these last few episodes. I believe it’s because you no longer edit the videos yourself. Previously you’d be brought up to snuff by the next video, whereas now you continue in the confusion. It definitely adds a different vibe to the reactions.
I found it interesting how you were lost in the story (game score, person talking, etc), but was exactly where you needed to be emotionally at the crucial moments. I think that’s a testament to how integral the music and animation is to carrying this series almost as much as the writing.

I agree with the sense of duty towards your team mates, if not everyone is giving their all in respect of the others, then the whole team will fall into a 'what's the point then?'-state of mind and it's just so frustrating. You play the sport for yourself, but you do your best for your teammates, because they've been working hard too and deserve that.
