@LightningForce1010 I played that version and imo was better than the Genesis and SNES version. My friend who was a SNES fan boy said his version was superior lol
I'd go so far to say the SNES Dead Pool looks better than the original arcade version. And that distant green gloom in the SNES Living Forest is lovely.
The thing about the 32x sound is all the added sounds are loud and clear, perhaps too much compared to the rehashed Genesis sound samples that are mixed in because they just tacked on the 32x sounds on top of the Genesis version. It can be loud and obnoxious and distracting.
They (32x version which was 32 megabits) ripped them directly from the arcade with no compression, whereas SNES had to compress them to get almost all the arcade sound effects into the 24 megabit cartridge they used. That's why SNES sounds a bit muffled
@@bifftannen1598 The 24mb cartridge is far from being the biggest obstacle. Each SNES game has to load all the audio data (program, sequence, music samples, sound effects, ...) into the 64KB of the SPC700 RAM. Considering that, I salute all the work Sculptured Software did on this version. That and the fact they also cared about SNES aspect ratio, so that on a 4:3 screen, the characters have the same proportions as the other versions.
Mortal Kombat II was one of those games that didn't really get a bad port. At least not on the major systems. All the conversions were quite on par in terms of quality, and it was all pretty fucking good! I actually prefer the SNES and Megadrive ports to the arcade as the AI is less cheap.
Well if you ever played a Sega Saturn you would probably agree with me it was really turned while I was disappointed in 1996 when I bought that when they had no sound effects almost at all
I owned the SNES version too. My friend had the 32X version and it was more true to the arcade. Good ol' days of wanting arcade perfect games at home. =)
@@sharifsingletary6710 oh yes, it is. It's the arcade truest in terms with original intro, lifebars etc. - but it's not the best cartridge MK2 - the best is still the SNES-Port!
@@sharifsingletary6710 for me, there is a difference between to be true to the arcade - and - to be the better port. Again: 32X = more arcade-true (but not the sound!), SNES = better game overall
Having played all three versions SNES, Genesis, and 32X, the 32X is certainly the strongest contender. The only thing that holds the 32X from even surpassing it’s CD counterparts, is that they built the game off the Genesis version versus porting the game from scratch using 32X hardware. It still uses the Genesis music as well as some of the Genesis audio samples. Hearing the grainy painful grunts next to the crisp arcade perfect screams can be a bit jarring, but on in all it’s a great faithful adaptation of the arcade game.
There is the massive limit on cartridge size as well. 4MB on the 32x vs 14MB on the arcade. Thats why some of the game is the mega drive version. They ran out of cartridge space.
I think the most important difference is that the 32x is better because of gameplay! Faster and more precise, also you can play with a 6 button controler.
@@eltroopertekken Yes and No, because the 6 buttons for the genesis and 32x was made as a replica of the arcade sticks. So it's closer to the Arcade... As a preference for me is the same you can give either the snes or the genesis that i can play with both.
@@ge4 Even so the arcade game only had 5 buttons, not 6, there's 4 attack buttons and one block button. There were no run button at the time. The SNES controller imo is perfect for playing MKII cause all the attack buttons are on the face and the block button was assign to the shoulder so it was out of the way allowing for performing moves easier. On the Genesis and 32X sure you could use the 6-buttons and activator to play but there's no remap option so the block buttons will always be in the way. I think MKII on Genesis and 32X were better play with a 3-button controller cause then A button is punch, B button is low kick and C button is high kick while START is block and that's good cause the block button is out of the way of attack. Considering the 3-button controller merge high punch and low punch into one single button, performing Kitana's fan toss and Reptile's force ball are much easier cause you only had to press one button instead of two like the arcade and SNES versions.
@@VOAN I did play MK2 with both the 3 buttons and when MK3 was released i got the 6 buttons one. Then i went back to MK2 and MK1 and oh boy i loved them even more.

Both versions are BEAST, I love 32x Pit Fatality and demonic Fatality sound when dripping blood. I love how SNES version has most sound effects and end biography pictures of the story when beating the game. (Both have decent graphics and music) The best way to be truly satisfied? Is two own both versions it will leave you, left knocked out bloody with a smile on your face😌... Ps. 32x version with 🎧 stereo head phones and killer Graphfx (DOPES UP THE BRAIN AND GETS YOU VERY HIGH/NATURAL HIGH😯) 🙏🏻☯️🥶‼
Both are about equal to me.. Both have the Ups, and downs.. Back then you didn't get true arcade experience on home consoles, even when the PS1 N64 and Saturn came out.. They still had limitations and cut corners.. The SNES version still has better color palette, and soundtrack which resembles more the arcade.. Though the SNES is not very clear in the sound department.. The 32X still uses the Genesis music and some of the backgrounds still don't have 3 scrolling layers.. But also some of the levels on the SNES doesn't either.. The voices and talk overs are added even though SNES still has more.. Shau Kon says you will die "Mortal", Is that your best, You are too easy, and laughs, while 32X version he only says You will Die , and the color is much better and even a few of the levels look better than the SNES while some on the SNES look better than the 32X.. The 32X is better attraction, while SNES has the better ending.. I don't understand why it had to take the 32X to have all of this, when you would think the Genesis alone should have handled this. Instead had muddy graphics and no voice overs..
It's all about money. The Genesis-MK2 could be like the 32x-MK2 and the 32x-MK2 could be MUCH better, like near arcade perfect, if Sculptured made them instead of lazy Probe! I like the SNES-port better than the actual 32x-port for different reasons
I've plaed the 32X version, own the SNES/Genesis versions, I must say when I still had the love for MK (this one, MK2, remains my favorite though) I enjoyed trying it out. The added voices and colors really were eye popping after the Genesis ports drab colors really disappointed me (the system was capable of colorful games), plus the SNES version had a bug where you could use certain characters to jump backwards, right into your projectile with repeated usage. All ports though have an easy to exploit AI, duck and wait, opponent gets close, jump back, they follow. Uppercut away, or snare them with Scoprion's Spear. Characters that could exploit the AI easiest are, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Jax, Johnny Cage, and Baraka. Liu Kang, Mileena, Kung Lao, and Kitana could not pull off such an exploit for some reason.
32X is a bit better looking but it should considering it required an expensive add-on to the Genesis. The SNES port is still impressive and miles better than the straight Genesis port.
That's sega's way of not gouging people on individual carts and throwing in extra chips on their cartridges. Instead of having a superfx chip per console with increased game prices, they just released a super duper fx chip, and same priced games.
@@samuelgao4777 Most SuperFX games were first party and as cheap as normal releases. Remember, it was Sega that came out with Virtua Racing for $99.99 with SVP chip.
Ryu, "miles" better?.. 32X has A LOT MORE SPRITES AND FRAMES OF ANIMATION, bigger sprites, higher resolution, arcade's intro, excelent soundtrack, better sound quality, better gameplay, and snes has better colors, and images on endings.. snes has even lower sprite size than MD, less frames of animation than MD, worse soundtrack than MD, and worse gameplay than MD, everything else is probably superior.. but I won't consider it "miles better" than MD.. 32X is clearly superior in every way tho.
32X looks better. The floating wizard goes up and down, in the SNES version just stays there. The Genesis version I think didn't have the floating wizard. The 32X version looks sharper too. The characters look less pixelated.
Probe pretty much put everything in the 32x version they couldn't in the Genesis version. Though it is built off of the Genesis port it has a larger color palet, more frames of animation, the characters bios and endings are actually arcade perfect as is the intro and all the sound effects and dialogue is present. Like Mortal Kombat on the Sega Cd though it is not a direct MKII arcade port, just a Genesis port of MKII with some finesse.
Check out the Doom Resurrection release, it fixed the levels, gameplay, visuals, performance, music etc. Someone could technically do the same for MK2 on 32x. Fix the music, a few visuals etc. Heck, Openlaura is already running on the 32x (early stages). The 32x is thriving in the homebrew department. There's a lot to look forward to!!
The cartridge would need to be 14MB to match the arcade. Normal 32x cartridges were 4MB (32mb). It could be done with bank switching or compression. Only a few newer games use these bigger cartridges. The largest at the time was around 5MB approx. Paprium/Pier Solar for example used 8MB or 64mb. Paprium uses compression which means the cardridge has modern processors builtin. Opemlaura has issues with fps, approx. 10fps or less last time I looked.
Very close, It is amazing what a developer who knew what they were doing could push out of the SNES, The 32x version is just the Genesis version pushed by the 32x hardware, the backgrounds should have been rendered by the 32x also.
The 32x backgrounds are rendered better then then SNES version. On 32x look at the ACID stage the chains with meat hops scrolling in full effect just like the arcade. Pit Fatality on 32x looks and sounds better. Check it out again
I always wondered why the music tracks were mixed up in certain ports. In the 32x version, the character select screen is using the Kombat Tomb theme, and the Kombat Tomb is using the Tower theme.
@@BIGGIEDEVIL sega has music for all stages. You're wrong. And yes, selection screen has its own unique track, kombat tomb its own unique track, and tower its own unique track too.. clearly ice kokoro doesn't hear shit lol.. 😂😂😂😂😂

My first 16-bit console was the MegaDrive. Then I saw a videogame magazine review of SNES MK2, and I bought the SNES just for this game!! This is the game that persuaded me to buy an SNES 😁
I wish we could have taken bits from both versions. 32x has the better voice samples, but I think the sfx and music is better on the snes, backgrounds have a higher res on 32x giving it a better sharpness but I prefer the colour pallete used on the Snes. Its all very close! Both great versions though.
I have both versions and both definitely has their good points. I would lean little to the 32X side though for bigger graphics and good game play and good enough sound.
looking at how close these are and thinking about how much power and price difference there was between a SNES and the megadrive+32x combo, it's just further proof that the SNES port was a masterpiece.
The 32x feels like they used the Genesis as the bases. Opposed to starting from scratch. I give this one to SNES simply because 32x could have done an arcade perfect offering. This is the Genesis verion with upgrades.
@Anthony Cook After further looking into it, this is a tough call. 32x port is better then the PS1, Saturn versions. (And for those that think 32x vs 16 bit SNES isn’t a fare comparison. If SNES can build up a 32 bit cartage like DK County and compare it to other 16 bit consoles, then 32x games can be counted in these comparisons.) I’ll give this one a tie. Only because both are very complete home ports. But, neither are arcade perfect. While still being better then the home ports released by the next generation consoles. SNES is the one I had as kid and is the best to me. Yet I still admit that the other one kicks like a mule too.
I'm going with the SNES here. A lot of the backgrounds on the 32x look like they're still rendered on the Genesis and therefore still limited to 64 colors on screen. Sure the added processor power allows for some of the backgrounds to move a little more on the 32x, but considering the SNES is holding it's own with a 3.68mhz CPU and in some areas beating the 32x version I'd say that's a victory. Also alot of the 32x music is still being played through that tinny Yamaha synthesizer chip in the Genesis. All the drawbacks of the 32x version are because it has to share the job with the limited Genesis.
On this one: it goes to 32X. The sound and visuals are slightly more detailed throughout. During the time of these games Mortal Kombat had a reputation as a "serious" and "dangerous" game, and, as with most all tournament fighters; the replay value is in two player matches. Having a slightly more "edgier" and detailed version of MK would have had value back then.
Presentation: 32X Sprites: 32x Stages: SNES BGM: SNES Voiceover: 32X Sound FX: Draw While overall i enjoy the 32X version more, it's pretty remarkable what they were able to accomplish on the SNES port. Especially when there almost wasn't even going to be a port due to Nintendo's "family friendly" policies of the 80's and 90's.
Something wrong with the sprites for certain character models on SNES. If only they had corrected the music tracks for the 32x, it would've been the ultimate port.
yeah, the snes sprites are pretty poor, in some ways i actually think many of the mega drive characters look better than the snes let alone how much better the 32x sprites look!
Playing this when i was a kid, I didn’t care about graphics and sound and stuff like that. But now as an adult and having way better graphical and sound consoles in this generation, i see the many nuances of both ports. The thing that I didn’t really like is that in the SN port there’s like a 1-2 second delay right after shao khan says fight.
Snes actually has more animation frames on the dizzy stance before finishing (when they stand still with upper body rocking around). Looks like they used the same animation frames as the genesis port.
Probe was lazy with the 32X version. Sure, the game looks great - and the voice is clear - but why did they keep the lousy sound effects from the Genesis version? Why not rip the sound effects straight from the arcade board instead? I’m sure the 32X could handle it!
Yeah, but it wasn't a 32bit game.. still a 16bit so they used MD MK2 as a base, and they modified it.. 🤷🏼♂️ cheap af I know but that was typical of probe.
32x leaves out Sub-Zero's ice sound & Reptile's acid & force ball sound, which the SNES have. You'd think with 8 megs more on the cart than SNES they could've worked these kinda important sound fx in the game. Lazy developing I guess, but it's still way better than the Genesis version
Finally found the 32X version after many years and was not disappointed. It's pretty close to the arcade. The only thing I didn't like was the mountain portrait screen music; it sounds too...upbeat/positive.
so we have to have an add on to say names, Fatality, what round it is, make grunts sounds and at least one picture during the ending. But still the sitar bong stoner music in the Deathpool, no boss hit cheers from the crowd in the courtyard and still no characters taking bows at the end.
would've been cool to see. Even though I appreciated both SNES & Genesis versions, I was really hoping for a simultaneous announcement that Sculptured Software would be porting a version to at least the 32X & build it from the ground up, unlike MK2, to see how good it could get. I wanted Sega to go all in on the 32X, but unfortunately that didn't happen. The standalone Neptune (32X & Genesis combined but still able to play Genesis carts) got me jacked up when they released pics of it & then that fell apart. Sad

Great job on the 32X version, but this was the SNES alone. No addons or enhancements, so it really isn't fair to compare these. It should have been 32X versus Sega CD version.

Shadowns are transparent on snes while they are plain black on 32x. Mega Drive was able to do these Black transparencies because on mk1 there were real Black transparent shadowns even on mega drive version.
The 32X version was literally a port of the Genesis version that they did minor tweaks to. It could have been the definitive port at the time. Instead the SNES version remains the one to own.
Yall smoked out or what?? The cabinet version is king and snes was mediocre at best. Look the bottom line is Nintendo/Sony is for anyone. Like pick up and play. Once you graduate to real shit it's PC or xbox. Stick with Call of booty...
And the sounds are a huge part of the arcade experience. I owned the 32x and when you pay that kind of money, you better see a significant difference, and that difference is definitely not here. SNES crushes this.
32X version has to win pity the 32X was so bad when it was capable of so much.......but at the time against the PSX and The SATURN it never stood a chance.
Liu Kang is supposed to do that at the end of every winning round. However, the announcer voice (Shao Khan) cancels it out on the SNES. As Shao Khan is on the ground and unable to make the announcement at the end of a round that he himself has lost, the original Liu Kang sample plays properly.
sound effects sound clear on 32x and image looks better but music goes to Super Nintendo. But in terms of hardware limitations these two are fantastic ports.
ripped directly from the arcade. They used a 32 megabit cart as opposed to the 24 meg carts of the SNES & Genesis versions. I guess they used the extra space mostly to get about 40 arcade perfect sound fx (voices, yells, etc) in the game that the Genesis version didn't have, along with noticeably better graphics & the intro screens. I think if they compressed some of the sound fx they added in, they could've had all the rest of the missing arcade sound effects & would definitely have beaten the SNES version in the sound fx category. It's pretty much a draw as each version has something the other doesn't & both are great.

Some of the background look different in the SNES version, like in the Wasteland there are suppose to be two dog statues in the center of the stage, in the SNES version the two dog statues are almost not seen due to being near the corners. Also on the Portal stage, there are no pillars and the outside window color is different on the Dead Pool stage. The 32X version had better animations though, animations in the Fatality texts, the character sprite runs smoothly and the background looks accurate to the arcade. On the audio side the 32X version suffer, wrong background music playing in the wrong place, the Kombat Tomb music playing at the character selection screen, the Tower music playing at the Kombat Tomb, and Kahn's Arena music playing at the Wasteland all feels kinda awkward, SNES had all the music theme playing at their correct level. While the SNES version is missing the arcade opening, it does had the opening text and the character bio plus their endings but the 32X version had the arcade opening and the bios though missing the ending pictures which just end with text and the same character bio. In the SNES version, Johnny Cage had two shadow kick, the regular green and the glitch red, in the 32X version the red shadow is never seen but in the Genesis version the red shadow was the regular shadow kick. The meditating Shadow Priests looks like something is bothering them in the 32X versions whereas on the SNES they seem to float just fine. Other than those both versions seem to play very well.
Just like in the Genesis version, the 32X port has far less animation frames than the SNES port. Only the standing animation of the fighters has one more frame to offer on 32X. Look at the winning poses, fatalities, jumping animations etc. Its quite obviours to see!

Both versions are BEAST,
I love 32x Pit Fatality and demonic Fatality sound when dripping blood.
I love how SNES version has most sound effects and end biography pictures of the story when beating the game.

Holy crap, there were no hardware limitations for Sega anymore, but backgrounds all still better on SNES :(
The background graphics are handled by the Mega Drive, and have the 64 colour limitation.
32X did the character sprites.
What I learned from this video:
SNES Shao Kahn: Taunts you an appropriate number of times.
32X Shao Kahn: Does not shut up.
🤣🤣🤣
This is awesome!
Miles better...?Is a exageration
Also MD came out 2 years before, so snes should be comparing to 32x instead of MD..
I have the Genesis and SNES versions... I wish I have the 32X version, looks good.
32X looks better. The floating wizard goes up and down, in the SNES version just stays there. The Genesis version I think didn't have the floating wizard. The 32X version looks sharper too. The characters look less pixelated.
Agree
In the 32X version of Mortal Kombat 2 has the full Arcade intro story, and the names are actually in the life bars.
but is an extra port
Gzus Kreist you mad
@@demonology2629 it's 50/50 bruh. acid pool, armory, forest and flying castle stages look way better on SNES

I always wondered why the music tracks were mixed up in certain ports. In the 32x version, the character select screen is using the Kombat Tomb theme, and the Kombat Tomb is using the Tower theme.
Bro that is in no way the combat tomb theme its completely different and is missing from the port completely

32x Wins! However, SNES version is a great arcade port!
Nah 32x version is flat out better than the SNES version. As it should be.
@Anthony Cook After further looking into it, this is a tough call. 32x port is better then the PS1, Saturn versions. (And for those that think 32x vs 16 bit SNES isn’t a fare comparison. If SNES can build up a 32 bit cartage like DK County and compare it to other 16 bit consoles, then 32x games can be counted in these comparisons.)
I’ll give this one a tie.

That's because the backgrounds in the 32X version are using the Genesis hardware for backgrounds, and the 32X for everything else.
Presentation: 32X
Sprites: 32x
Stages: SNES
BGM: SNES
Voiceover: 32X
Sound FX: Draw
While overall i enjoy the 32X version more, it's pretty remarkable what they were able to accomplish on the SNES port.
If you are talking about mixed up music tracks, that is the sega cd version if mk1 not this one
Unlike MK1 where it was one-sided, this one actually looks like a closer race.

Both were good I prefer the sounds on the snes
The graphics on the 32x were a little better both imo were good ports
Lui Kang noises are closer to the Arcade on the Snes, like with the attack noises in general. But the rest goes to the 32X

Wow! It looks like 1/3 of frames are cutted on SNES version. Still a great job for a really crappy CPU anyway.

they sould have sent a cd with it for sound that you could use in the sega cd as a option because the background music in 32x is not as good
they are both really good and one is not really better than the other.

would've been cool to see. I wanted Sega to go all in on the 32X, but unfortunately that didn't happen. The standalone Neptune (32X & Genesis combined but still able to play Genesis carts) got me jacked up when they released pics of it & then that fell apart. Sad

Liu Kang is supposed to do that at the end of every winning round. However, the announcer voice (Shao Khan) cancels it out on the SNES. As Shao Khan is on the ground and unable to make the announcement at the end of a round that he himself has lost, the original Liu Kang sample plays properly.

Yeah, surprised me hearing that for the first time in the SNES version too! @TheShortMan's explanation on why makes it make sense, though.
sound effects sound clear on 32x and image looks better but music goes to Super Nintendo. But in terms of hardware limitations these two are fantastic ports.
Music sounds better on sega.
How are those voice samples so perfect on the 32x?
ripped directly from the arcade.

Sega 32x wins
FATALITY
@josequispe3488 it doesn't though. Sound and background graphics kill it. Also the gameplay isn't quite as good or arcade accurate as SNES
Both Ports Are Good, On SNES Version, The Trees In The Living Forest Stage Make Noise & On Jade's Stage Which Is Goro's Lair, The Background Has Eyes In The Dark, 32X Version Characters Do Look Sharper, Also SNES Version Game Ends Like The Arcade With Shao Kahn Exploding & Screaming No No No & Showing All The Characters.
That was mk3 you dummy! 😂😂😂😂🤦🏼♂️
@@gaba665 , You're the dummy, Look at a arcade version playthrough & SNES playthrough, both have Shao Kahn screaming at the end
32x was the way to go... period.
