Too bad it's developers actually put thought into things like sprite control,
But really, compared to color palate (I know that's always my first thought when comparing fighting games) how important is precision controlling on a fighting game anyway?

Probe should be ashamed of themselves for the Genesis port. Absolutely abysmal. The port of MK3 by Sculptured Software (the team that ported MK2 to SNES) showed the port of Mk2 could have been much better.
Keep in mind, Probe was so bad that they even ruined the port of MK2 to the Saturn!
Look at Baraka's win pose on the Genesis. How could they think it was acceptable to cut so many frames?
They even removed the ability to do a crouching punch. Why?

However, I've checked the comments so many times and nobody has ever explained exactly why the genesis deadpool stage is so completely TERRIBLE compared to pretty much ANY other MK2 port....like WHERE are the rest of the chains!?!!? Also, the SNES port coloring the grates red was genius then and is genius now

    • @patrickwheatley2693

Sega Genesis had a way smaller memory cache and color palette to play with versus SNES. That's why games like this showed so poorly on the Genesis.
The same issues that haunted the MK1 Genesis port plagued it in MKII because, again, the Genesis hardware simply couldn't handle an arcade like experience.

@@matthewking2388 the reason the chains aren't there in the stage is the same reason why the monk isn't present in the tower stage, the crowd doesn't move in the arena and the flying dragons are non existent in the kombat tomb: there just wasn't enough hardware memory to support every little detail in game without sacrificing something else. That's also why the majority of the audio is missing on Genesis and the arcade soundtrack is nowhere to be found. MK1 on Genesis had the same issue, and the blood code really didn't make a difference. SNES still beat Genesis on MK and MKII.

The Genesis port has less voice samples, cut some corners on stage animations, and has less animated frames.

The samples are clearer on the Mega Drive version, and the graphics have a bit more contrast, but the SNES version wins, at least visually and aurally. Sega's insistence to not put ADPCM hardware into any machine prior to the Dreamcast was a bad idea which explains the lack of samples in such games, the reduced quality or, in the case of the Mega Drive and 32X, the decision to fall back onto FM for the effects.
Probe never did get the most out of the Mega Drive; Sculptured Software would've done a better job with all Sega versions.

The only other samples are "fight", "finish him/her" and Scorpion's "come here" - and they sound much better on the SNES, like every other SFX and music. It's because Probe is a really lazy developer, it's like you said - Sculptured would have made a better Megadrive-version than Probe, also better graphics (colors, shadows, Goro's lair, more background-details etc.) with making better use of the hardware's abilities. Probe even messed up the 32x- and Saturn-ports as well, they could be so much better than they are, it's just sad what they did...

The PC version may look more like the arcade but it sounds like shit, so I have to disagree. And Where do people get this idea that the Mega Drive or the 32X had horrible sound??? Just because on paper the Snes had 10 channels and the Mega Drive had 8 doesn't mean anything at all, the way each system handled sound is totally different. I love my Mega Drive BECAUSE of the sound, I actually have it running through my home cinema system just because I love to listen to Mega Drive soundtracks. The Snes on the other hand tried to make sound more realistic but it generally sounds like muddy crap. I have never come across a game ported to the two systems which actually sounded better than the Mega Drive version the only exceptions being Super Street Fighter 2 and the Lion King but both not by much.

I couldn't disagree more. I have looked up a few videos of the PC version and it looks the business but the music is bloody awful, and besides a PC is not a console even if it was good. Name a port with better sound on the Snes other than the two I mentioned above...I'm not saying the Snes wasn't sometimes capable of good music and it did happen now and then, but in general the Mega Drive just rocked, was loud and bold not all wimpy soft and muddy like the Snes, just listen to mortal Kombat 1 for starters and other ports like the intro to Desert Strike and Urban Strike or Terminator 2 The Arcade Game even Earthworm Jim. when it came to rocking loud and bangin soundtracks the Snes just couldn't compete

    • @Rob55Levo
      @Rob55Levo 8 лет назад +2

I'm talking strictly about the myth that the Mega Drive had inferior sound when compared to the Snes not how the games looked. A lot of kids are getting into the retro scene these days so they never lived through the 90's so they just go on how things look on paper and whats trendy, it pisses me off is all, they don't know things like the Mega Drive was released over 2 years before the Snes so the Snes should of slaughtered the Mega Drive but the Mega Drive kicked the Snes ass constantly. These kids just don't realize what an amazing achievement the Mega Drive was.

    • @Rob55Levo
      @Rob55Levo 8 лет назад

Yeah but the Snes version of MK1 sucked, controlled horribly and was massively censored, a larger color pallet didn't help them, which says a lot. And the Mega Drives success with MK1 forced Nintendo to stop censoring games so much. But anyway I just believe that probes version was a lazy port. There is no reason not to have all the voices and some of the backgrounds were missing details, and they used the same font as mortal kombat 1 not the font from the arcade all of which was fixed in the 32X version. I'm not saying the Mega Drive version wasn't fully playable and fun, it just should of been much better than it was. Look up Mortal Kombat 2 unlimited Hack and you get an Idea of how the game could of been so much more.

The only flaw with the snes version is that names should be inside of the life bars instead of outside.

Both were good. SNES had a better color pallette and hardware. Sonic was amazing.

Hauehaie

Both are good, but I perfer the more advanced SNES, as it is closer to the arcade in comparison, plus, I grew up with that legendary console.

certain areas looked better on snes than sega. But to me I think sega was clearer though even if darker. But snes could handle a bit more like dragon flying in background along with other things I noticed.

With all the hardware limitation the megadrive had, its version did not make ugly for super nintendo, some details in the digitalization of the characters, and in some scenarios of the game, they were better in the genesis, however the super nintendo, not only has a more advanced hardware, but showed a better performance, where it was possible to get many results that could not be obtained in the mega drive, but still the mega-drive version was very good but limited in things that I prefer more on the super nintendo version.

There is really no debate here; one clearly looks and sounds better than the other, and they both play smoothly and responsively.

The only real flaws of the SNES version were the random lag slowdowns on certain stages and the fuzzy outline of the characters. The only eye sore I had was the names not being inside the health bars to match the arcade. The Genesis version was really missing so much to where it hard not to notice considering I played the arcade version ALOT back then. The SNES was a solid port, and I can’t understand why others keep thinking the Genesis was better. The frame rate was fine but so many sprite animations were missing and not in a good way.

The colors is what really hurt the genesis release besides the lack of voicing. Thankfully they were able to redeem themselves with the 32x version.

*Best stages* = SNES (Great detail, although Genesis wins with The Armory and The pit II)
*Best music* = Genesis (HANDS DOWN - you can't argue on that)
*Best characters* = Genesis (they're more detailed - watch the comparison videos and you'll see why)
*Best select character screen* = SNES
    *Best color* = Genesis
    *Best make up* = SNES
    *Best sound effects* = Genesis
    *Best letters* = SNES
    *Creepiest living forest* = Genesis
*Best repeated player 2 characters* = Genesis
*Best FIGHT fade in/out effect* = Genesis
    *Best timer* = SNES
    *Best Fatality effects* = SNES
    GENESIS > snes

i played and mastered the Sega Genesis version of this game and never knew how much changes were to the snes graphically and sound wise. I have finally gotten to play the snes version. There is a slight delay/lag in performing moves and i see why alot of peopole prefered the snes version.

The consistent fast framerate, and controller with 6 face buttons make the Genesis version have a better feeling to play. By far in fact.

Limited colors on the Sega Megadrive also added to the realism,I've Always thought that the arcade version of mk2 was too bright and colorful. Hell, even Mk3 didn't look that colorful.
