@Eddiepsp you got that chip part wrong. The chip wasn't to enhance performance on the snes. The chip in question for s alpha 2 was to allow for decompression of data since the game was ridiculously big for 16 bit standards
Not every snes coprocessor chip out there is for performance enhancements ya know
That being said, even the snes struggles a bit with its relatively limited color pallete (compared to psx for instance) on alpha 2, I could only imagine the Sega Megadrive with 64 colors per screen would've been worse in that aspect

@Ryan Yagashira The MD port from what I heard had badly compressed voice clips. Not only quality wise, but data wise. Really, this could've been made better like you said. Mortal Kombat 3 MD had more characters, tons of voice clips, secret games, etc all built on 32 MBit.

A point of note between the 2 versions is that the SNES version was on a 32 megabit cartridge while the Genesis / Megadrive version was on a 40 megabit cartridge. Hence why there were some extra stuff in the genesis version like the opening having more frames of animation, announcer voice in the beginning of the round and the extra illustrations in the endings.

    • @davel231
      @davel231 2 года назад +7

Also, the Genesis had a 6-bit color palette, while the SNES' was 8-bit. That means that all the graphics took up 33% more room on the SNES than the Genesis. They had to make it up somewhere!

Well...it's nice they gave us something extra after screwing us twice in the sound department. There is no excuse for the way Street Fighter 2 Special Champions Edition and Super Street Fighter 2 sounded like, none. I don't know about the Super Street Fighter 2 cab but Championship Edition and Street Fighter 2 Turbo had the exact same sound chip as the Sega Genesis.
For reference- There exists today a fan fixed version of both games for the Genesis utilizing the correct sound codec. This is the same codec used to make most retail Genesis games when it was current. So none of that we have better technology business I hear so much about. I believe the driver is called Gems.

Quite a bit of missing animation on the SNES backgrounds. Everyone seems to note the Genesis' failings do here's some SNES ones
Chun Ali's stage - very slow animation, lack of bikes. Why? Odd never bothbleft AND right.
Ryu's stage - SNES clouds move but missing the birds
Balrog's - strangely the SNES version has cut down the animations so the people in the crows are waving their wrists or bending from the forearms instead of the fuller arm movements of Genesis.
Nintendo censoring Blankas ending and changing the little black child to an white one because... they thought western audiences couldn't handle it? WTF?!
Plenty more missing slides and animations in the endings but, they're more obvious.
Miss the days of these two consoles going at it. There has never been another console even close to how extreme this was. The schoolyard was a dangerous place if your console buddies were absent that day! Haha!

Taking a good look at both versions. They appear to be in the same 256x224 resolution (I know the common res for Genesis is 320x224, but some games on the same system can have the same SNES resolution, speculatively removing the need to rescale the graphics between the two console ports), while the color differences are quite obvious (Genesis having 9bit RGB with 64 on-screen colors + light/shadow modes, and SNES having 15bit RGB with 256 on-screen colors).

  • @Longlostpuss

@ 14:50 - Guile's stage - I would add that the Genesis version has more dithering in the sky transition, is missing the extra clouds and has a very unnatural blue tint compared to the SNES version. But overall, despite this and the other minor details missed from the stage, the image seems to have more pop to my eyes, despite having an inferior colour palette. The Genesis' higher resolution could be helping the overall image quality and compensating for the limited colours.
@ 15:51 - DeeJay;s stage - the beach in the background is more detailed on the SNES, you can't really see much beach at all on the Genesis version everytime DeeJay jumps, as it's deliberately impeded by an additional hut.
Overall though, considering Nintendo had an extra two years to come up with a more powerful console, I'd say the Genesis more than held its own against it and proved its longevity.

They’re both better than the slow playing arcade port in my opinion. New challengers on the arcade is probably the second worst street fighter 2 game after the original. The snes and genesis ports have the speed increase options with faster and smoother gameplay plus it added a couple of extra modes both single player and multiplayer

OH, I FORGOTTEN SOMETHING EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. There is one MAJOR difference between the two versions and it is MORE major than all the differences highlighted in this gameplay video. It's DeeJ'say Machine Gun Punch move. The execution fully works like it suppose to on the Megadrive version as the game registers ALL the hits just like the arcade version. Unfortunately, this move is broken on the SNES version as it doesn't connect and register all the hits. Because of this flaw, it makes the MD version by default the superior version in respect to Gameplay only.

Both versions were technical marvels and brought the integrity of the arcade game home but I actually think that the PC Engine version is perhaps an even greater technical achievement. Sure it has a few more sacrafices than both the MD and SNES games but it's 8 bit Street Fighter.

Every snes street fighter had that since the first one. Very strange.
