Thanks Mike, you’ve done well in keeping my Gen1 Levo going. Henry in California A lot of people will blame the cable between the motor and battery. A dealer will be happy to sell you a new one for $100+. The on trail effect will be a weak but working motor and then failure. It is not the actual cable but the piss poor two prong connection. My McGiever fix is to push tiny foil pieces into the two holes (using a square top wood toothpick) in the connector. This will allow for full power. To make the plug more secure, I even drilled a tiny hole and use a screw to secure the plug.
Great video, thank you ! It is unbelievable that something that is supposed to be used in nature conditions has so little sealing against water and dirt.
They rebuilt my giant / Yamaha motor a while back ,not a bit of troubles Sense . I caused the problem. They educated me. It won’t happen again . I highly recommend them, they’ve got their act together. Easy to deal with. Quick turnaround. 👍🏻
Hi great video, as a mechatronic engineer I say its best to keep the electronics away fro the mechanics. Bosch motors are not fit for purpose being over engineered and poorly protected environmentaly. Ride a hot motor through a cold puddle or stream and the air inside the clamshell cools and sucks water inside, game over.
I understand what you mean. Fortunately these motors don’t get too hot. And it looks like they did consider this effect. It’s not too often we see ingress that reaches the PCB since it is positioned nearly in the middle of the inside. It happens occasionally but usually the bearings get the most mucky action.
Hi Sorry but we dont do a whole lot with those parts and I dont think we have anything to reference for you. Your local bike shop should be able to help.

What motor would be in my haibike from 2014 29sL xduro ive never ever worked on it only to put a new powercable on it as i updated the powerpack to a 500 but id like to have a complete bearn overhaul and maybe some up to date soft ware just to bring it up to standard ,its my commuter not seen much mountain biking at all any advice or information from yourside to get the motor to u would be appreciated 👍
Im not sure what motor is in that bike. But we cant currently provide software support. Definitely send it in for inspection and service. ebikemotorrepair.com/repair-overhaul-service/?v=0b3b97fa6688
peter at ebike motor center uk can fix most controller problems with gen 2 motors now can bus bs does not help but we have cracked recelling the gen 2 batts as well but uk based and peter has world wide distro for bearings ect and now uk brose motor warranty repair uk
You are probably getting into territory on that motor that would benefit from an overhaul or service. Everyone’s needs our unique whether you are a fix it when it breaks type of person or a more proactive type of person. The average lifespan on these motors between four and 6000 miles. If you want to get ahead of it then go ahead and send it on in for an overhaul. However, there are things that can fail with similar lifespansand it’s hard to predict exactly what will fail. My point is you may wait until it starts giving you some trouble then we can do a full inspection and overhaul at that time. It’s entirely up to you to make that call.
I was excited, looking forward to saving up and buying an ebike……. Until I started looking up the motors. Each brand doesn’t matter. Brose , Bosch , Shimano , tq , Yamaha. All Garbage! Like wtf that’s just ludicrous. These things are already thousands of dollars and then a high failure rate on top of it! No wonder the MTB market is in shambles 🤦♂️
Im curious is there anything better about the gen 2 over the gen 4?, Some people seem to think it is perhaps stronger? Maybe they just think this because it is a bigger unit? Is it really worth spending the extra coin for a gen 4 if your looking at the second hand market etc?
I like g4 much better. the g2 had that small 3:1 output front sprocket. It had a tendency to suck the chain in any kind of dirty conditions. Also are it really hard to pedal if you ever got stuck with no more battery life.
there are about 90 error code 500's. Most of them are related to software issues. A shop with diagnostics should be able to clear the code and see if it comes back. If it comes back then it could be related to an incompatible accessory. It can also be some parts that have failed in the motor. One of our partners should be able to help if you need more assistance. here is a list of our partners ebikemotorrepair.com/world-wide-partners/?v=7516fd43adaa
Or you could see it a different way. All the motors have problems. They all have problems for different reasons. It’s kind of the cost of the fun and joy that they bring. I have a motocross background and we were doing overhaul on motors just about every season.
@@siriosstar4789 I like you’re thinking here. I will poke one hole in your argument and that is we see similar ratios of failure across every manufacturer. While Brose did have several batches of lemons throughout several years of manufacturing, the motors that were not part of bad batches with manufacturing defects have actually held up quite well. So if we remove the flukes, it’s actually a pretty cool motor. Yes we made that video based on typical problems that we see with Bosch. While we do repair less Bosch, there are far less of those motors used in the United States. Frankly, the new generation for CX motors are coming in in big waves with problems in some cases that cannot be solved at all. Some of them quite mysterious. Cool thing about my opinion is I’m not being paid by any of these big companies to share my opinions. We just see thousands of statistical samples to base these characteristics upon. Feel free to let me know if you have any interest in digging deeper. Promise I’m not trolling. I just love to engage on these matters.
I think those motors are designed very poorly. First of all there should be metal gears and oil bath. Why can engine can make 500.000km and ebike crap is so problematic. I want to ride, not maintain all the time.
I don’t know where to start with that logic. I can’t think of a single electric motor that has an oil bath also metal gears are louder. Also weight is a big issue in battery life. So if you switch to metal gears in an oil bath, you’re increasing the weight significantly. Also keeping the electronic components separate from an oil bath would prove problematic. As far as your logic with maintaining goes, do you know any car that goes a 500k km without maintenance? Or for that matter, are there any bikes that don’t need maintenance? If we compare motorcycles, even to your argument, you would spend nearly the value of the bike every year maintaining the engine that has an oil bath. I’m afraid part of the cost of mechanisms of any kind that get used is some sort of maintenance. I would agree with one part of your argument that is this design is not the optimal ideal design. But mainly because it has a one to three ratio of input to output. Meaning the sprocket turns three times for one time of the crank. No problem when you’re riding with battery power but if you ever had this model battery die on you a ride it’s a real challenge to pedal home. I would certainly encourage you to reconsider your perspective. They are a lot of fun when they work and they will come along with maintenance needs at a different than a regular bicycle..
@@ebikemotorrepair yes i know car with motor that made 500.000km with just changing oil pretty often. Also combustion engines are 10x more complicated and car is way faster, sits outside in rain snow and still works. And yes there is one ebike with oil bath. I think its called pinion but they cost more than car.
we literally just uploaded it: Low video quality after upload When you upload a video, it will initially be processed in low quality. This process helps you complete the upload process faster. When the upload flow is complete, your video will be available to stream in low quality, on a wide variety of devices. Higher qualities, such as 4K or 1080p, can take more time to process. While this processing happens, your video may seem to be missing higher qualities for several hours. Once high-resolution processing is finished, higher qualities will be available on your video.

Yes, looks so overly complicated with many parts.
Hi Mike , don’t know if it would be possible but any chance you could put a photo on labelling the connections to the motor ?
That’s a really good idea as we are coaching on this a lot.

If you want a reliable motor I suggest a wheel hub motor. You only replace planet nylon gears after maybe 10 000 km.
