    In this video I test D mode, B mode, and Cruise control on a highway loop test to see which driving mode is the most efficient. You can use this info to guide your decision when choosing which drive mode to use.

    In my experience, the driving modes on the 2023 ID.4 don't make much difference on straight highway driving. It's really in stop-and-go traffic around town where you're more likely to see differences in driving modes. In my case, I've seen a small advantage of .2 to .4 miles/kWh using B mode when driving around town (again, not on highway).
    NOTE: You mentioned the challenge when driving in B mode because of the heavier regen. I agree that it requires more driver attention to modulate the pedal and maintain a smooth ride.
    TO MITIGATE THIS CHALLENGE, you might try a third drive mode -- Sport -- which uses an amount of regen about halfway between B and D modes. I find that this medium level of regen allows a good balance. It provides improvements in efficiency and is easier to maintain a smooth ride. If you don't like some of the other aspects of Sport mode, you can use Custom mode options and set the Drivetrain to Sport. This enables the same mid-level regen.
    IMPORTANT: There is a quirk/bug in the VW software such that each time you restart the ID.4 this mid-level regen goes away and the car drives with the D-mode-level of regen, even though it retains your Sport or Custom mode setting. To get the mid-level regen back, you have to switch to another mode and then back to Sport mode or to Custom mode. Weird, but that's how it behaves. Driving in this mode around town, I've seen efficiency as high as 4.5 miles/kWh, but obviously, your driving habits, as well as weather and other driving conditions, will determine your results.

      Wow! Thanks for all of that info! Totally makes sense! Like I hinted at in the video if you are traveling at higher speeds it would likely me more efficient to use D mode. It makes total sense that regen mode would perform better in around town driving!
      I have a Kona electric and use regen all the time, but can adjust the level of regen actively. I wish the ID.4 had that level of control.

    Drive modes are pretty similar. I drive in D most of the time. I switch to B sometimes in city traffic. Auto hold is really my favorite thing in stop and go traffic or even a drive through.

    Regen = riding the brake pedal constantly. What folks don’t seem to get is you get regen using the brake pedal… but brake pedal is intentional. All braking is bad / wasteful. That an EV can do regen makes it less bad, but it’s still lossy. So your goal for efficiency is to avoid braking and coast as much as possible - which is awfully hard in “B” mode.

      Thanks for sharing. While regen does occur when using the brake pedal, Regenerative braking in definition does not need the brake pedal at all. When in B mode the motor takes the kinetic energy from the wheels and converts it to stored energy in the battery. This process naturally slows the car down without the use of friction brakes.
      The ID.4 is meant to be an easy transition car for people going EV. So you can also get revenge using the brake pedal. The car will slowly blend in the friction brakes with regen when you use the brake pedal.
      For this test when in drive mode I was using a combo of the accelerator and brake (hardly and brake though). For the B mode test I was exclusively using the accelerator pedal and adjusting the pedal to maintain the same speed. The ACC portion of the test had the car make all of the decisions for me!
      I hope this clears things up for everyone! I can make an entire video on regen if people are interested!

      @@theaverageev you missed my point. Coasting is the way to get the most range in any vehicle. Braking in this car uses regen first and then the brakes as necessary for higher G acceleration. That braking can happen because you have pressed the brake pedal or because you have it in B. Braking in a car without regen is 100% lost energy. Braking in a car with regen is less than 100 and a non trivial amount more than 0% lost energy. So braking in an EV, even 100% regen braking which doesn’t activate the brakes (whether automatic or from the brake pedal) is bad, just less bad. It has losses. Now being in B mode will cause the car to regen more than necessary, altering your driving style to cycle more power (with the associated losses) through the battery than you would if you tried to coast more and used the brake pedal only as needed. This is why the German manufacturers believe in coasting as the default and the B mode is really there to deal with the scenarios that would have had you put the car in a lower gear in a traditional ICE, like going down a long hill. There is a reason the Germans don’t like one pedal driving. It is inherently less efficient. Brake only when you command it because it is really needed is the philosophy. Verstehen Sie?

      @@gsengle thanks for clarifying! Yes coasting uses no energy, which is clearly more efficient. I don’t agree with the way VW implemented regen. My Kona Electric is adjustable, so I use regen 1 on highways so that I still coast for the most part and put some back in the battery. If there is a giant hill down I will switch to level 2 or 3 and then go back to 1. This is much more efficient since I am maximizing coast and regen.
      You can kind of do this on the ID.4 by going between D and B mode, but is super annoying and not worth it since it has such aggressive regen.

    I always drive in B mode. It just feels better. Also I use the ACC almost always.

    I would expect B mode to be more effective in stop and go driving. I found that B mode and cruise control results in quicker response to approaching slower traffic.

    So when you press the brake pedal smoothly till the point where the friction brake comes in, does the regen meter in the instrument cluster go far than in the regen B mode?

      I’ve played around with it. When in D mode you can maximize the regen better. B mode is just max regen that is too much in my opinion. I use ACC most of the time, so I don’t worry that much about it.

    Totally different subject matter. If you just want to take a break for about an hour and you want the air conditioner on, would you still turn on the car or you can simply turn the air conditioner on without turning on the car/motor?

      The A/C uses the HV battery so I would just turn the car on!

    Each round should warm the battery up more, and I’ve found the B mode to be slightly less efficient cruising. The ACC can tend to be less efficient if it’s slowing and accelerating in order to maintain the distance set - if you see any cars

      Driving the distance I went does not heat the battery up in any meaningful way. Maybe 1 degree tops. I was monitoring the OBD. The only reason battery temp would have been a factor is if it was really cold (which it wasn’t) that would have decreased the amount of regen thus effecting efficiency.
      Your results are likely to be different given I was using set parameters of staying exactly at the posted speed limit. Most people fluctuate above below as they coast, go up hills, down hills, etc. This test was also done at 55 and 60 mph because those are the highways I have available. Like I said in the video I could see things flipping for d mode and b mode at higher speeds. But the moral of the video is there really is not a big enough of a difference to matter. With how nice travel assist is, I will stick to cruise control!

    Could you elaborate why you are constantly on your brakes on B mode (regen braking) but not in D mode (coasting, braking only fron your foot)? Is it not the opposite?
    And when you mention cruise control, is it a separate thing? Aren't you in D or B mode when you trigger cruise control? Or does it not matter what mode when cruise control?

      I need to rewatch the video, but I was maintaining the same speed since it was an experiment. In D mode I would have been mixing between the brake and accelerator. In B mode I would have just been on the accelerator (for the most part).
      For cruise control D mode vs B mode does not matter. The car will use regen to maintain speed down a hill. So it is technically always in B mode when in CC.

    Are you in automatic cruise control though? It's much easier to just let it go when you don't have to worry about obstacles on your own.

      Thanks for asking! To ensure I was getting the most out of each mode I only used ACC on the cruise control test. The other modes were without that activated. The car automatically regens when in ACC so this was the only way to know how “efficient” each mode was.

    Why not use cruise control with B mode?

      It is my observation that the mode does not matter when using cruise control as the car uses regenerative braking to maintain speed when going down hills. I have switched from D to B mode while in cruise control going down a hill and nothing changed.

    If you engage cruise control while in B mode vs. D mode, is there a difference in efficiency? I'd like to see that test. Do you remember if you were in D or B when you did the cruise control segment? Also, if there is a 0.1 difference in mi/kWh from one to the other, that isn't exactly negligible. It's over 3% better. If you drove 100,000 miles per year, that would give you 3,333 free miles by using B mode.

      I believe I was in B Mode during cruise control. I have played around with it since have notice no difference while in cruise control. I think cruise control prefers the regen to maintain speed.

    I’ll bet $1000 B mode is the most efficient. You get the most regen possible, but you only use it when necessary as you can glide in neutral by feathering your right foot. You get D mode within B mode basically.

      I’m pretty sure B mode won slightly if memory serves me right?
      Personally I would rather have paddles like my Kona and be able to optimize it at different levels of regen.

      D mode overall is more efficient as it regens when you press brake lightly anyway, keeping rolling is the key to good M/kwh

    ive had a Kona for 4 years and i keep it on level 3 in Eco all the time on the App it says on one trip it says 60kwh put in and 30kwh from regen .

      That's awesome! I also have a Kona and I like to adjust mine as I go to max out regen and costing. Love that level of control on the Hyundai products!

      @@rodden1953 yup! Keeping it for another year and then leveling up. Hoping for the Ioniq 6, ID.7, or Chevy Equinox. Lots of factors! My wife is the regular driver of the ID.4. I drive it and run tests on the weekends! All EV household here!
      Love the Kona and it is definitely magically efficient! The 2024 looks great too! Hoping on some improved specs!

      @@rodden1953 the EPA estimate is 361. But from what I’ve heard that is a more optimistic EPA estimate. Most are thinking 330-340 which is pretty good! The charging speed is hard to argue with! I would definitely do some major road trips with it!
