Rub 'n Buff is a metallic wax finish that can be used on wood, metal, plastic, and many other surfaces. I have used it in many of my DIY projects, including on edges of furniture, lamps, stencils, etc. In today's video, I'll demo Rub 'n Buff and you'll get to see how well it works on several surfaces, includes high heels shoes, wood, and as a decorative edge.
Colors: Gold Leaf, Spanish Copper, Patina, Antique Gold, Silver Leaf, Ruby, Grecian Gold, Autumn Gold, European Gold, Antique White, Ebony, Pewter.
(Rub 'n Buff is made from imported carnauba waxes, fine metallic powders, and select pigments).

How far does a tube go?
they look so small like you would need lots of tubes for some projects.
Kasha, that's what I was thinking, they so small for big projects 🤔
@@KellyanneKashaS individual tubes are larger. her's were from a "sampler" pack.
NOOOOOoooooooooo ... Both orders I have bought there have been junk. Water consistency
I USED rub n buff on my kitchen cabinets and resealed it with spray varnish... turned out great! Went from natural to gray highlighted the edges cracks darker...added handles... stunning❤
Lol. I absolutely loved it when you got some of the gold on the wood and you ran with it.
I think the patina shade was pretty and I think it is supposed to show the other layer through it. Like copper that has oxidized.
Here it is 6 years later and I just recently discovered it. .
Better late than never! :)
Thanks so much for this video. I made my daughter a sunburst mirror and the gold paint was just not achieving the effect i wanted. Enter rub n' buff gold leaf. Gorgeous results. Just wonderful. I really appreciate it.
I saw Rub n Buff and had to stop in. Those of us in the SteamPunk and CosPlay world have been using this stuff for years to get realistic results for metallics while only using plastic or foam. I usually apply it over a finely sanded black primer, works like magic. Just make sure to polish all of the excess compound off to bring out the real luster of this amazing product.
how long does it take to dry?
I've been trying to find a glass & metal coffee table under £100 but they're all shiny silver. So your video is a blessing! The lamp is the colour I need!! Thank you?
We used rub n buff back in the 70's to "patina" our military models! I still use it for all kinds of applications beyond models! Thanks for sharing/showing the details of this compound! It's great stuff!
So this is an old product that people used in the 70s. Wow.
@@kaycee6036 Lol!! It's been around for a while!!!
There's a lot of products that have been "cross" applied over the years and they work.
I have used Rub 'n Buff for years. This product is great! My recent project is an antique headboard in cream which I added accents in gold. Looks fabulous. Awesome that you brought this product to your viewers. Keep up the great work.
Is it water proof
I'm using this on my desk drawer pulls. Problem is, now I want to use it on everything 🤣🤣
Rub n buff, best stuff ever! A little goes a long way with such a small tube. Working on a vintage metal toolbox with drawers and using the silver shades as a highlighter for the drawer pulls! Glad you sampled the other shades as I wasn’t sure what the true color would be so thank you!
This is a great demo to remind me how to use Rub 'n' Buff! I updated a few ceramic bathroom accessories and the Grecian Gold color was perfect.
I'd never heard of Rub N' Buff. I have to have this to use on a pair of dulled black cowboy boots. I also want to use it on some black picture frames to cover some scuffs and such. I also like the idea of using contrasting colors to accent pieces of furniture and applying the Rub N' Buff in highlighted areas. I'm glad I ran across your channel while looking for stuff to help me pass some idle time. I look forward to discovering the other projects I saw you doing.
You are AWESOME ! I am now in the middle of reviving an old sewing machine cabinet. Thanks!
Woohoo, glad it's turning out well for you!
I can’t wait to get started on one of my DYI project...thank you for the help getting started...I loved it!!
This is an amazing product! I love to craft and I can easily see this on a piece of cardstock to make a greeting card or on a tag. Now I have to go get it. Thanks for your tutorial.
This looks like a great product. I just ordered the antique white. I am going to do two lamp bases, dresser hardware, and the outside of a mirror in my bedroom. Thank you! I love your channel😄
Gallery Frames & a floor lamp!! I luuuvv Rub'n Buff!! Never realized how many more colors were avail & thanks for the different ideas!!
So the European Gold is sort of champagne gold and the Grecian a darker, antique-ish one. I really am convinced. I have simple, inexpensive grey-painted steel bookshelves from IKEA the frame of which I'm going to turn into something awesome with this product. I suppose when applying over metal, it would be a good idea to let it dry completely before buffing.
You're the best! I learned about this product from one of your other videos and when I went searching your video was the only one I could find with info like this. Thank you ❤
At 8:00 you said "that's not a good demonstration". I disagree. I found it very helpful to see how it would adhere and/or interact with a lacquered finish which I'm assuming that brush was. Great video. Thanks!
I love these multi purpose diy videos! I just found your channel yesterday with the 7 diys then and now video, and I'm hooked! Great work! 😊
I love the demonstration!! It was fun to see them all!! And you are so original! Lol
Hello I have that same lamp it was my husband's before he passed I been dreading the thought of painting it so I really appreciate your help thanks for sharing have a awesome day
Thanks for the introduction to a new product. Never heard of this before
I used the silver to tone down a bright gold framed mirror. It turned out great
That's what I am wondering - a friend bought a gold painted mirror and said it's a bit too bright. You used silver to tone it down? I was wondering if she should use an antique gold. thanks for you input.
@@MmeO I think antique gold would be beautiful. It would add some depth and make it look a little more aged. I needed to add some silver to make it fit a little better with my decor. Luckily there was a band in the frame so it made sense with the frame.
Wow, that is an amazing product. Never heard of it before. Thanks for sharing.
Girl, I think this product is going to be my new favorite thing! :)
You will love it! It's my "go to" for old hardware. You can see how I used it in this furniture makeover project I did recently: ruclips.net/video/MtIz2yX6kgo/видео.html
Oh my gosh,I love it! What awesome stuff! I have never heard of it but I want some now lol. Thank you so much for sharing such a great product.😁😀
Love your channel! Thank you for giving me a new idea for the old lamps I have.
I can already think of a few projects to use those on, thanks!
Ooooo....I'm loving this product!
I haven't worn heels in years lol!
Going to get this product. Thanks for the heads up and God Bless.
Today was the first time I ever saw any of your videos. One was on my page where you were reviewing 7 diy's then and now. After I watched, I was hooked and just watched this video. Heading over to Amazon now! Love your channel. Thanks for the awesome info.
Hey there, Shelliyah! I love how RUclips just promotes me and brings in new friends! :) Welcome!!!!
Thank you!
I love Rub-n-Buff. I had an interesting rock that I coated in gold to look like a gold nugget paperweight. In time, it did need to be refreshed, reapplied as the metallic flake in it does tarnish over time.
You may have just saved my furniture re-do! The pieces turned out great but I have had no luck finding new or even old hardware to replace the original (1980's) hardware, which are part oak and part brass. This is a great idea!
Yes, Rub n' Buff is amazing stuff!
Thank you I never knew about these. They are so nice.
The antique gold will be perfect for toning down my bright gold mirror. I was looking at gold leaf but this seems a lot easier to use. Over to Amazon now to order. Thank you. :-)
Great demo!
Vinegar and Salt are great to use to get rid of tarnish too!
You put that stuff on Stuart weitzmans !!!!! 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 I ordered some for my mom tho so she can redo her door handles
Iyana Vee ..same here should of used cheap WalMart shoes ..lol, not Stuart Weitsman...crazy
Thank goodness it’s paint!!! My mind went elsewhere Rubb n Buff!?
Fantastic video - I’ve just bought some antique gold rub and buff. And I am excited about what I can make with it. But for the old original brass hard wear, I think that would have com up a lot nicer if you had cleaned off some of the dark patina with something like Bar Keepers friend - it would have looked amazing restored back to the original brass.
Thank you for this video! I have never tried Rub n Buff, but your video has inspired me to give it a try. I've been looking for something to refurbish my door handles, hinges and furniture hardware. I feel confident this product is what I need. Your presentation delivery is very clear and watchable. I'm going to subscribe to your content. Thank you again!
First, a big thanks to the OP for this vid! Can anyone give me experience with how well this holds up, a particular type of clear coating needed to finish and if by not rubbing too much will it leave it as a more matte finish that can also last? Would greatly appreciate it.
I would go on rub and buff website and see if you can get those answers. If its not addressed contact the with the questions
Hello ! Ive used rub & buff to touch up existing gold picture frames & / or to transform wood into gold finish frames 🖼
I replaced my cabinet hardware in my kitchen with oil rubbed bronze hardware. I went over all of my hinges with ebony rub n buff. Five years later they still look good.
I have used rub n buff but didn't know it came in so many colors thanks.
I love it for picture frames! And mirror frames’
Love it! Reminds a little of the Distressed Oxide inks by Tim Holtz!
Omg I buy some yesterday I love you 😍😍😍😍 you are reading my mind
thank you for your tutorial. I am just starting to do diy projects and really enjoy your videos.
You are so welcome!
Great help. Thank you.
Thank you!! I’m considering using the ebony on my new dresser that had one broken handle out of 9. But the new one I found online is perfect gold(ish) brass whereas my other 8 are tarnished a beautiful black.
I would use on furniture. I'm always sanding and staining. I like the idea on shoes too!
Thank you for this awesome demonstration! I am sold on rub and buff. I am new to your channel and it seems to me that one of your gifts is demonstrating products. Maybe you should run with that? That is if you haven't already done that. Loved that you showed us different colors on different surfaces. ❤🖒
Thank you for the thorough tutorial, I just bought my first tubes and was in need of this exact video! (Now I might have to get some more colors, that patina is calling my name 😆)
You'll love it! This is amazing stuff. I have a friend reach out asking about a tarnished lamp he wanted to change the color of (no spray paint). I recommended the Rub n' Buff and the lamp turned out amazing!
I spray painted a white shadow box frame and just could not get the gold spray paint to adhere in a smooth finish! Ordered Rub n’ Buff and put it over the badly sprayed gold frame and Voila! It is gorgeous! Dries quickly. I am currently refinishing another white shadow box frame with RnB antique gold. Not sure it’s going to adhere in a smooth finish but not done yet.
Thanks for this video! It was so helpful !
Ha! I have the exact pair of lamps from my parents but could not throw them out. They are going to be silver and will be perfect! I also have a slew of old picture frames that I intended to paint with chalk paint. Maybe not . . . Thanks for the great ideas.
This is an awesome demonstration! I've been searching for something similar, had no idea rub n buff existed until your video was recommended when searching for gold paint alternatives. Thank you! (Have to admit, I was totally sidetracked when I saw those shoes cost $19.99! Is this normal pricing at Savers?! I don't think I've seen shoes priced higher than $6.99 at my local one, even name-brand! And even that is a significant increase from what prices were a year or two ago.)
Those shoes are gorgeous ❤
These are neat!
I enjoyed this video.
This is a great product, and it has endless possibilities!
Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've used it before to change the colour of some faux leather boots for a costume. They are still holding up with no cracking.
Love this!!
It's all so fun! thanks!!!
Thanks for a great demo video! Fun to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
love this! wish I had seen it before letting go of a beloved dresser ...
I was just looking for a way to do a verdigris finish and I totally forgot about Rub'n Buff. Thank you! I think the shoes could be totally steampunk with some added accoutrements.
I use this on my finished polymer clay jewelry pieces!
What type of jewelry and how well do they hold up?
Mooch I make polymer clay jewelry and it works great I seal all my work with a finish and it holds up great I’ve got pieces 3-4yrs old that haven’t changed a bit
Thank you, great video!
wow! never knew about these! Your son sounds like mine calling what I do "weird" 😂
I'm just now watching this and I think it would have been interesting to have just done the heels of those shoes with the gold.
And maybe add some to the very top of the toe.
Thanks for showing this very informative video! I just ordered a tube of Grecian Gold to use on my builder basic brass (?) chandelier. I will change the lamp shades to something tapered and modern and hope for the best. I think I can use this product on my ladder, w/o taking down lamp, even on the chain. I want Circa Lighting, Aerin Lauder's Montreuil Chandelier, but this tube of faux is in my budget! 0 UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This product did not work on brass lamp at all. I tried it on wood, and it is beautiful, but because the brass is not porous it did not adhere, it just looked horrible. I did the exact same thing as in the video. I tested on an old brass lamp from work that matches the finish of my chandelier - just like the one in the video.
I cannot wait to try this product, I was looking for something to brighten up some hardware pieces, perfect!! My daughter's name is Sarina as well, not sure if yours is spelt the same way; you were so funny in those shoes, lol. Tsmfs. Xo
It's like a steampunk high heel shoe. I like it
Thank you - very helpful!!!
Great video. I am an amateur dyi-er. I have been looking for ideas for some pieces I have. This stuff could do something to enhance the detail.
Great video ❤️
I use Rub and Buff on my 3D printed parted to make them look metallic and give them depth.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video:)
Nice demo. You and those shoes kind of cracked me up. I loved the lamp. I would def consider using this product.
And I totally "ruined" those shoes! They were very expensive. LOL. But the shoes were horribly uncomfortable. No regrets there! LOL
First time watching your channel as it came up in a search for Rub n Buff. It would have been helpful to see all the golds swatched since there were so many of them and it's hard to tell the difference in coloration; and, when the tubes were scanned at the end they were upside down so not possible to read the gold colors to at least compare the tube colors. Many of us would not buy the large sampler because it's expensive and we wouldn't use all the colors so a better color swatching would have been appreciated.
Wow I need me some this 🤣🤣🤣🤣
vinyl stool or chair seat stencil.....love your vids!
This Rub and Buff really looks like interesting stuff. 🤔I was wondering how I could fix the bottom of my old coffe table. The bottom was a bright shade of gold w/ a very intriquite detailed pattern but it is so tarnished now. I did not know if I could clean it or refinish it? (The top piece of the table is an oval slab of marble. I am not touching the
top at all except marble polish.) However, the bottom is due for an upgrade.
Hope I can get this product?. Thanks Serena 😊
If you do the lamp please show the finished results!!
I thrifted a cute & never worn good quality pair of leather shoes for 2.00... they were light pink...not a good look. I planned to turn them a different color once I figured out what product to use! I will try this!
Let me know how it works!! :)
Great video. You have a very authentic and natural feel. Almost as if I were with you doing the project. I have one question though, does the Rub n' Buff ever dry to touch? I want to do my lamps too, but I don't want the colored wax rubbing off on my hands when I touch it or rubbing off of anything else for that matter!
Oohb that lamp!
which gold did you use for the first heel? I'm wanting to rub n buff a coin to make a necklace, and I used antique gold but the necklace chain is a very yellow gold and the two dont match. The first heel you did looked like the perfect match for the chain because its more yellow-y. Do you remember which one it was?
Thanks for all the time and effort you put in to your videos. It must be exhausting. But I look forward to seeing them. : )
HA! It really is, but I wouldn't want to do anything else, Diana! :) The biggest things I had learned through posting daily is: 1) it actually *is* possible!, 2) I need a faster computer!, 3) I need a new camera, 4) I absolutely LOVE making videos! :) Thanks for watching and being a part of it!!
You motivated me to express my creativity and now I'm working on my own reconditioning of furniture. I've been able to sell them on letgo. It's therapeutic almost I love it. and extra money never hurts plus "recycling". I always refer back to your videos...I'm like "what did she say to do again" hahaha. Anyway have a good night. : )
That's amazing!! So I guess you can send me my small chunk for commission...? HA! Totally kidding. That's great! I always say that DIY is like therapy. I enjoy it most when I've got a glass of wine, my Ipad on watching my favorite shows, and getting into a creative zone. That doesn't happen often because I'm usually filming what I'm doing, so there's a bunch of interruptions while I capture it all. LOL. But yes, I totally agree with you. Therapeutic and it's exciting having something to work on and feel proud of when you're done!
The patina patina could be used as a verdigris to help create an aged bronze or copper effect over those colors. Drawer handles get a lot of action. You seal this stuff? Rub&Buff must tell you whether or not....
Well... that explains it!!! My tube of this (silver) is a runny mess - almost a water consistency! That's why i couldn't get anywhere near the results I was expecting!
Yikes! Can you return it? Shouldn't be watery.
The best part of rub n buff is the fact it goes into the paint so it will only crack if the paint cracks
I like your videos 🥰
I use this on hardware all the time
You could put some black or brown spot (circles) on those shoes to give them a pattern. Just a thought. And then sale them on eBay.
