Amazon Handpan Chinese Made VS Branded Hand Made handpan - Value VS Quality.
** Is Amazon handpan worth buying? **
For the price the Amazon Handpan is a very good quality. The slight tone differences and the resonance is due to the quality of the steel and heating during creation of the instrument, but if you cannot afford the $1500 to $3000 handpan then the Amazon handpan is great. As long as you are happy playing it then the price doesn't matter.
Hello there! I so, so agree with you. For THE PRICE, it's a great instrument. Yes, many, many Handpan players looked down on players with "cheap Handpan". To the point , I was actually "upset" when one told one of my student-that he shouldn't have purchased this cheap crap! Well, most cannot afford $1000 Handpan....anything over that $$$- is out of the question. Like you said, as long as he/she is happy playing it, price doesn't matter. You, have a blessed day, my friend.
@@maxandchloemeditation It's the classic elitist problem, especially with musical instruments, they think that anything that isn't the original is crap, which just isn't true and what they don't get is that people want to get into hobbies or want to learn something without putting their life savings into them, the person buying the cheaper version is fully aware that he's not going to have the experience they'll get with the original, but they're plenty to learn and have fun with and, honestly, even enough to use professionally, maybe if they plan to do a high quality recording though they will want the expensive one, and in the end, if they really enjoy the cheaper product they can sell their cheap one and shed out the money to get the real deal, this is why these cheaper options exist.
Then there's also people like me, someone who doesn't have much money and who has too many interests and hobbies, each of which requires a certain amount of investment, in this example I'm going to focus on music, which is just one of dozens of my interests. I have all kinds of different instruments because I love the variety, so I tend to go for cheap to low mid tier ones and I'm perfectly happy with that, like guitars and bass guitars from Harley Benton, which tend to have really good price to quality ratios and allow you to experience what that instrument is like, but since I'm focusing more on Bass my dad gave me his Cort bass, which among elitists is considered a cheap bass, but it costs almost 3 times as much as my Harley benton ones, and the experience is not that different in the end. The guitar player in my dad's band also has a bunch of Epiphone guitars, which among Gibson elititists are "crap" but he says that the Gibsons don't make sense, he'd be scared to play them, since they cost as much as a second hand cheap car.
@@mobilesoundexperiments3719 maaaaaaamnnn, I so agree with you! I was fortunate to be in the music industry back in my younger years. “You need pro gears to make hit songs”. Yes, was fortunate to own plenty of high end gears…and to be honest- they were there for shows. What I was using was in my racks- tons of cheapies to mid sound modules. I remember an acquaintance was mocked because he was using cheap- so call NON pro instruments until his song went on number 1 and stayed there for 3 weeks hahahaha. It’s all about having fun. Enjoying what you have. Peace and blessings my friend!
The Meridian doesn't sound better in my opinion.
I just got an Asteman made in America from Amazon for around $800, it sounds AMAZING & is perfectly tuned to 43 2hr it came with the stand, padded back pack with carry handle, matts, finger cots, instruction book, I highly recommend it for under $1000!!!
Due to being on a very low fixed income, this will allow me as a beginner to get a handpan. Sure I would love to have the best but I don’t need it. I’m 64 just learning, I purchased a Kosmosky Steel Tongue Drum but have wanted to try a handpan too. Played the clarinet all through school, but my lungs are damaged so no more wind instruments. Learning to use both hands separately has been interesting. I am thrilled to have music in my life again. So many people go on with life leaving behind things like music and art.
Thank you. I so resonate with your post. No such thing as too old.Haha! Music is music. Music is LOVE and music heals.I am glad you got a Kosmosky. Great drums! handpan---thats a "totally" different instrument than tongue drum. Personally, I started with tongue drums....said to myself---I don't need a handpan. Bam! The handpans are just totally different beast! I feel that the handspans are "more alive" than tongue drums. The sounds....the way you tap it....where you tapped it----creates a totally different mesmerizing sounds. Its so easy to "get lost" in/with these instruments. Have a blessed day!
When I started playing Cello I didn't buy one for thousands of dollars. I bought one from Amazon for about 200. I still use it as my practice instrument to this day. When learning or thinking of getting into playing an instrument you shouldn't buy one for thousands of dollars. You never know if it will stick with you. If you do stick with it and get serious, then later on you can save for a better one.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Have a great day
I bought the Amazon one last year and am very happy with it. I'd love a Meridian ( they're made in the city i live in) but the cost was just prohibitive.
The one thing i have found since getting the Amazon one and joining numerous groups on line is the sheer amount of snobbery from people who have expensive ones. I joined for help in learning to play but ended up very disheartened.
Thank you for such an honest and positive review. I wish more people in the handpan community were like you.
GM Paul. The purpose of me making that video is exactly THAT. Its almost a mockery making fun of someone driving a Honda, while they drive Mercedes...or Audi. I taught meditation to inner city kids and adults. Most cant afford any price- period. Those that has a few $$$- I suggest these inexpensive handpans. No, it won't have the luxury of the Mercedes ....but will get you from point A to point B. Your journey is personal. Mine as well. OURs all together. Embracing what we have.....Enjoy the little GRACE that was blessed upon us. Only you can conclude your journey .Dont be disheartened ....as long as we smile ....and we will. Have a blessed day.
Paul, I too, was disappointed with the groups and similar snobbery. One day i WILL buy better. Right this moment I'm enjoying what I have while trying to learn more on my own.
@@kennethbornert5090 I am so , so sorry that you guys had to go through all these. Keep playing peeps! Enjoy the music!
Kenneth, the Asteman Amazon sells (American made) sounds amazing for under $800!!!
I cut out the Amazon middleman when I can. £136 D minor 432Hz 10-note from Temu. Sounds fantastic, lovely ring with all the overtones and clarity I could want as a 64 year old beginner. Don't want too much sustain to muddy the melody like a piano loud pedal.
Yes I might want to try changing the two top tones, but then I might want to change them back again, who knows yet.
Give me a year or so to learn and I'll be ready to step up with maybe different tuning and different level of quality. As a beginner, paying full price makes no sense until I know it's for me. Decades ago I was more creative and less 'stiff' than I am today.
I learned piano on an old upright, drums on a second hand mongrel kit. Didn't need a Steinway, or a top of the range Ludwig or electric. Appropriate tool for appropriate skill level and budget. And yeah, if I could have gone to a handpan shop and tried a dozen different instruments you bet I would. But for now this will bring a lot of people pleasure just to try it out wherever I take it. Alongside all my other portable percussion from metal and wood tongue drums, to cajon and kashkash/asalato, congas, bongos, tabla etc. Never mind my lovey electric kit!
Good morning! Am happy to hear that you got yourself a handpan! YAY!I I so agree with you.....we all got to start somewhere. No one are supposed to mortgage their house to get their first "HIGH END" handpan. Man, I started on a Casio keyboard........the casiotone haHaHa! Enjoy, learn, practice and practice. Enjoy the little blessings of LIFE. Be blessed , my friend. and KEEP playing!
Hi Nick. Re: the handpan you bought via Temu... I'm also wanting a D minor, 432Hz. Did yours come from a seller called YILONGH ? And, did your seller stipulate that his handpan was "hand tuned" or "handmade"? Otherwise, is it able to be re-tuned via a hole underneath, if needed ? Thank you.
I love that you really emphasize on the fact you can so EASILY return the amazon handpan, so why not see if the low cost gets you an acceptable quality? If you hate it, return it and keep saving, no worries!
Exactly! Have a blessed day!
I know i will get a lot of hate for this comment. But in my opinion the cheap Amazon one simply Sounds different then the expensive one but not better or worse. I actually like the sound of the cheap one more but that's my opinion.
And just to qualify my statement. I play guitar, bass, doublebass, Banjo, bagpipes and harmonica.
2 thumbs up from me! I love my Asteman HP. that HP really got me started with my drum journey. Love the sounds then, love the sounds now. on a lighter note---we can survive of steak everyday---once in a while you want a hot dog!
same, i just got my American made Asteman last month, I got the B-DC 10, it sounds amazing for under $800!!!
@@bmcamis9804 awesome! Enjoy your drum journey!
Thank you for your honesty. I grew up playing woodwinds and attended an arts school. I've wanted a handpan for years since I first heard them. I'm currently trying to decide on one that's about $650. As a musician, I completely understand quality, professional products and you get what you pay for. However, I have teenagers that want to learn and I only desire to play on my own - when I'm sitting outside with my goats & a cup of coffee. I will never record music and only want to soothe my own soul. I truly want to afford a professional instrument and possibly will someday....however, I'm on a very snug budget and I want one everyone in the family can play.
Buy ONLY from AMAZON PRIME sellers. That was - upon receiving ,test it out- check the notes. And if its not to your satisfaction or if it's damaged/out of tune - you can return it...no hassle return to Amazon. BUT again, only buy from PRIME sellers on Amazon. Aura handpan has beginner's series starting at $875(7 plus ding).www.aurahandpan.com. Another option-though it's not handpan- will be the tongue pan/drum. Rav Vast, Guda, Pulsar, Art Quint to name a few. Each has its own tones and characteristics. I have a few videos as well ....with those instruments.Let me know which interest you before you make your decision(s)
@@maxandchloemeditation At least I can return if needed and will definitely make a larger investment for a handmade tongue drum or used handpan if this doesn't work out.
@@maxandchloemeditation thank you so much for your quick response! I wrote a reply and it doesn't look like it posted. Anyhow, I ended up purchasing from Amazon prime seller and I have my fingers crossed. After hours and hours of research and listening to all of them I almost purchased a tongue drum (from Kosmosky or Rav Vast) but decided to just go for the handpan. I purchased the Lamuty handpan that "Ethereal in E" has played. I realize it may not be what I'm looking for but I wanted to try - I do hope I'll be surprised. If it's awful, at least I can return it.
I looked around to see if there were any music stores in my area that may have any used or refurbished handpans or tongue drums and didn't have any luck. The city is also 2 hrs away from me.
I hope it's not of terrible quality, but if it is I'll be returning and paying more for quality.
@@LimeLady1010 ……so…what’s the update so far? Did you keep the handpan or?
@@maxandchloemeditation nope, I did not keep it, I returned it and I found a RAV drum for 600. Got a killer deal and I absolutely love the RAV! The ham pan from Amazon was flat on two different notes and I just was not impressed. I think you'll be fine for younger beginning students.
I actually liked sound of the Amazon Pan, over the Meridian. The Meridian has a more tinny sound. The warmth of the Amazon pan, sounds far better in my opinion. The lack of resonance in the Amazon pan is not a deal breaker for me. At one point, a few years ago, I was very close to buying a $3500 one. Glad I didn’t. This Amazon one sounds great.
Hello. The Amazon pan is great for "what it is". I will make a video soon. My Amazon pan is over 3 years old. Been through the battle field quite a bit. Been "hit" from all sides by miniature warriors(kids hehe) and adults. So are my other handspans. the Amazon pans ----surprisingly still in tune. but its has a slight overtone ringing on some notes. Not noticeable by many- but I do. The artisan handspans do not have that problem(s) just yet. All said, the price of the Amazon pan(s) are justified if a person wanted to "try" handspans. It has definitely embarked me in my journey. Have a blessed day.
The Amazon one sounded good enough for me especially when money is tight as now days for us working class
Honestly, I so agree with you. Granted, you do get what you pay for but for a beginner- to learn to play- it's a perfect drum. Just make sure- that you purchased yours from Amazon Prime. Lacked of quality control affects many of these "inexpensive" drums. Download a tuner and test out each note to see if yours is in tune. Have a blessed day!
this is basically the issue with any affordable instruments
guitars included
you can find incredible stuff around $200-400
but the same model will vary in quality from unit to unit so finding something excellent may be rare
and returns are difficult
good for those curious to try the instrument, but unsure
often times the build can interfere with appropriate technique
500-800 you are more likely to find something solid
but occasionally duds slip through the cracks
and returns are usually more feasible
great for intermediate players who want a bit more quality
also great for beginners who know they will stick with it and want a head start
$1k+ you're almost guaranteed good-great quality
with some gems occasionally hiding
and customer service is usually great
always fun to pick up your first "pro" level instrument
intermediate - advanced players will apreciate the quality
can sometimes make things too easy for beginners and actually form bad habits
above $2k you're getting something built with care and passion
this is for those who are passionate about the instrument
basically get something you love and will never get rid of if you're spending here
below $100 is almost guaranteed to be garbage
good for experiments where you might easily ruin the instrument
good for stunts/ videos where you will ruin the instrument
good for events/ parties if you don't want to worry about it disappearing (you may even be glad if it does)
Thanks for the advice on the Aura handpan. I just ordered one. They sound wonderful!!!
Aura is awesome. Jon is awesome. and added you- triple awesomeness. Am glad you got the Aura. Great handpan. Have a blessed day
Love your humility and authenticity. What I have noticed is that the pans and drums available on Amazon are very limited in variety.
Hello. That's the thing......most---well, almost ALL of Amazon handspans are massed produced- means that they are made from the same mold- and the same factory with different branding. In many words- they are cheaper and MOST lacked quality control. Almost all Amazon handspans will be in D Minor. Artisan pans will have more variety....and almost ALL are handmade-hence the price.if your budget allows it, I ll go with artisan handspans any day. ALL- yes, all the Artisan makers will backed up your purchase. And you are guaranteed that ALL notes are in tune upon receipt. All said, All based on your budget and your intention. have a blessed day!
Im low on finance but will begin on the cheapest value and put my heart and spirit into expression this instrument
GM! Thats everythi9ng, my friend! Put your heart and soul into it.As long as YOUR ALL is in it----you ll get the results in no time! Have a blessed day.
I really like your mellow, calm, informative style on this video. Excellent. Thanks.

Thank you for such an honest assessment! I’ve heard that the HP community can be “snippy” about this subject! Lol… anyhoo, I’m in the market for one, and there’s MANY on Amazon right now. GOOD to know about the Prime thing, so thanks for that! Also, I have the money for a more pricey instrument, but! I’m LEARNING and want to make sure I love it before I continue honing my new skill❤
I totally agree.....the handpan "community" can be very very cruel. Bullying someone because of the cheap handpans........NOT up to "their standard"? Am glad I am getting positive responses here. As long as you know what you are getting. There is a difference btw Amazon HP and Artisan HP. We all start----I did ----with inexpensive HP
@@maxandchloemeditation for sure… I can hear the difference when I’m listening to videos for learning, etc. I just HOPE that I get one that’s at least in tune! Lol… that would make me crazy… BUT, as you said, if I can just stay “Prime” I can return if it’s total crap! 😝😁🤙🏼
you are correct! I have been wanting one but we cant afford the expensive one. So I bought one last Christmas from Amazon for $375.00 Couldnt be happier. I know there are limitation. One of my note is slightly off but plays well as a whole. When I can afford the $1000 handpan, I 'll keep on practising and listeningb to your channel and others. Thank you for being real with your reviews.
GM Rainbow! everyone has a start or a beginning to any journey. Start small......and as you get better and money starts rolling in (haha)- then you get a better one. have a blessed day!
Purchasing any musical instrument is certainly a very individual thing and difficult to speak in generalities of course.. Demonstrations also depend on the microphones used in video, the person playing and on and on. (Just things to consider)
If you are not a musician and just want something to have fun banging on, vs. any real concern about tone, tuning and the many subtleties of a good instrument, then definitely, why spend a lot of money when not necessary.
The Chinese pans have definitely been getting better and some of them do a great job, no question. But things like having a note out of tune is NOT a small thing for a musical instrument, so consider doing your research. There are similarly priced good cheap pans made in other countries as well and are available from many other reliable good sellers that also ship locally, besides Amazon....just by the way. (Sorry if this was intended to promote for Amazon). And the price of quality pans continues to go down.
While the low price is tempting, for the cheaper pans, if you want an instrument you will be able to excel at and grow with, you get what you pay for. The investment for a quality pan can be well worth it if you plan to really use your pan for the amazing range of sounds, tonality, playability and types of music a good one will give you.
So, just offering these thoughts. I, myself have purchased a number of cheaper instruments that eventually were very unsatisfying and I
ended up needing to pay more money on top of it down the line. The initial quality would have saved me in the long run. But if it's for a kid that will soon lose interest, then definitely a waste to purchase a quality one. And keep in mind, some very good deals for good pans other than Amazon are out there.. Could give some references, but not sure allowed here. Maybe try Google.
Thank you. You are so 100% right on your statements. My Asteman was my very first few handspans(my first was a BaliSteel- Novapan was my 3rd, Asteman-this was my 2nd). You are 100% right when u said the quality of these commercial pans has come a long way. Honestly, I played the Asteman a few times next to my better handspans.......yes, there were a few things "lacking" but the tuning & sounds itself actually held up against the "competitions" Honestly, I don't like to recommend the Chinese pans....but only to "certain groups".....someone that wanted to 'check" out pans that don't want to spend a lot of $$$$ etc. Or a beginner's pan to learn on- which was for me. & Learning to bend the ding hahaha etc. I always recommend Amazon because of the NO HASSLE returns. These commercial pans technically has ZERO quality control. With no questions ask return policy--- and free shipping---thats one of the main and ONLY reason why I kept mentioning Amazon. I am up to my seventh handpan right now...and the Asteman still has a spot on my setup. Its for my daughter when we play together. have a blessed day, my friend. and thank you for your insights.
super helpful video brother, i decided to go with an Aura, because it was 1500 which is actually more affordable than some manufacturers, but the wait is insane! i would love an amazon mod right now
Good choice! Aura is a great brand. Jon stand behind every single one of his drums. Amazon drums are ....and has been always a hit or miss.Stick with artisan pan if your budget allows it. and mostly and most importantly, you will be very happy with AURA. The sounds and quality are definitely there.....no need to worry about subpar sounds and after sales support(which is ZERO when it comes down to Amazon handspans). oh yaaaa....the wait is worth it. like all great things or food----it takes time and they are made with LOVE>
If you're a beginner, buy what you can afford. It's up to you to make it sound good. Don't jump out there on something high in price, and you lose interest in it down the line.
Hello! I am kinda.....going on a bias here. All in all.....it's kinda a catch 20-20....as much as I LOVE my Amazon handpan......& if you really compare QUALITY & LONGETIVITY ........ It's really complicated----YET simple....I prefer to go by the person's budget. and most importantly, educate them about the PROs and CONs of these instrument(s). I believe that once the person understood that, buying either or----will be just fine. Your comments make a lot of sense.....and honestly, that's how I feel about the "cheaper handpan". Have a great day!
Well, this is my Handpan buying experience. So I decided to go with a place called Cosmos handpans, I saw that the 1000.00 dollar handpans were marked down to 600.00 dollars, so I said ok I'm going for it. Well, the little voice in the back of my head said, "See if they have a promo code online somewhere." Most of the time, some of the promo codes don't work. I found the code that said WELCOME25 and tried it, and it worked!! It took an extra 150.00 off the handpan after taxes. I paid 450.00. It took about 3wks for it to ship because they only kept a few pans in stock, so it had to be made.
@@tresamccormick6 THAT is AWESOME! I cannot wait for you to get it! OH Christmas came early for you! Congrats! Enjoy your sound journey!
I don’t understand how they can make a decent hand pan for $200 but it costs thousands for an actual good one.
Gm! Well, we are somewhat comparing apples and oranges. Handpans are relatively a new instrument. Same with any musical instruments when they are first “created”- every single one of them were made by hands, not machines- hence the term massed production. Making a handpans by hands are tedious work. Beside having the best material, each of the notes has to be tuned by hammering. So you are talking about hours upon hours of labor- to perfection. Each hand crafted Handpan will receive about 10000 plus hammering time. The maker also has to be skilled tuners. So said, lots of time and expertise put into making ONE Handpan. Imagine, all those hours spent- and the Handpan did not come out right- that goes down the drain. As technology evolved, machines are used to make these handpans- example; the Chinese brand-Asteman etc. they are prefabricated, then tuned. Corners were cut- that’s why most don’t sound as good as an artisan Handpan. So, it’s subjective in so many words. A handmade Martin guitar will be in the thousands and mass produced versions will be in the low hundreds. Have an awesome day!
@@maxandchloemeditation Henry Ford's mass production, assembly line technology for the Model T finally brought the automobile within affordable reach of many average Americans.

Meridian hang drum is definitely of greater sound quality compared to the mass produced Chinese copy, I’ve have both if you are serious about starting to learn you get what you pay for buy cheap and you’ll soon want to upgrade to a quality pan !
Good morning! You, sir! You are 100% correct. You do get what you pay for. Artisan pans definitely “rule”over mass produced pans. You get quality and of course- great sounds , playability and stability. This video is not to discuss which is better. It’s about what to expect from “buying” a “non artisan” pan . All sincerity- all based on the budget and expectations. I, personally own a 5 artisan handpan and a zephyr on the way. And sigh… about 20plus tongue pans(rav, art quint, pulsar, Guda etc). These great drums has their journey. When I teach children-I use mostly amazon Steel tongue drums. For me or to me- it’s about allowing people to enjoy the sound journey. Have a blessed day, my friend.

Hi thanks this review, it's super helpful. I'm currently on this situation of really wanting a handpan but not beong able to afford one and so I've settled for an amazon tongue drum. Admittedly it's quite good but I just don't think it's the sound I want over the handpan.
Do you have any links for amazon handpans you would recommend?
I'm an absolute beginner who just wants to learn a new hobby and perhaps see where this goes in the future 😊
hello! The handpans and the tongue drums are totally 2 different instrument. And the tongue drum itself are very different as well- artisan drums vs massed produced drums. Sounds are very very different. Artisan drums like the Rav, Art Quint, Pulsar-to name the few....are scale based and each note is practically a "CHORD" - up to 8 notes on one tongue. Hence the beautiful sounds. Massed produced drum rings at single tone- NO harmonics. Just single ringing note/sounds. As far as links- all massed produced drums on Amazon will be the same. Size does matter! the bigger the drum- the better the sounds are going to be plus larger range of notes. I recommend drums around 12" and up for better projection and playability. Smaller drums will have smaller tongues.....less range(some)....and yes, cheaper. And smaller drums are usually in higher pitch. example C4 and up.
Something that is hard to record is the energy and the vibration of the instrument.
100% percent. It's very hard......a lot of harmonics....and overtones ---- was lost in between. Thats why I rather do a straight take with the mic in the same position. Vibrations are hard to capture.... movement in space.....But/And hopefully, you can hear the slight differences. Have a great day!
Thanks so much for that reference! That’s perfect enough for beginner like me😅😂 thanks 🙏 namaste
Am glad you enjoyed the video. Have a blessed day!
Meridian definitely sounds better but I’m surprised that the Amazon pan sounds as good as it does … wasn’t expecting that … but for performing, I’d still go with the quality …..you might have been lucky getting one that was decently tuned …. ☺️🛸🎶🦋
Helllooo Handpan Lady !!! That- THAT Amazon pan is over 3 years old and still sounded pretty good. I wholeheartedly agree....if you can afford a better pan- GET the better pan. I love my stainless steel Iskra from Sean but, the price range itself is out of reach for beginners(unless you can spare the $$$$). I finally decided to make the video because too many people has been "mocked" when they posted videos of them playing Amazon pans. And when they ask questions regarding Amazon pans- they get "knocked down".
"Save your money and get a better pan"- was the common answer.
In many words- that's what I dislike about some of the Handpan groups.
To me, not everyone has $1k to spend on Handpans . And many just want to "play" for fun...or learn to play.
If $500 is their maximum budget....these Chinese pans are decent and great for their value.
**again , buy only from Amazon sellers-no questions return**
The scary part is that right now.....so many "BRANDED" drum makers are actually buying the A and AA drums from China and rebranding them as their own.(their beginner's series)
@@maxandchloemeditation … Points well made … and I have to say, I spent a weekend jamming with the Virginia Handpan Community where one of the members had an Amazon pan…one with etchings. And it sounded amazingly good ….. I was impressed enough to find it and tag it for anyone interested if that’s all they have to spend. And I do agree that Amazon is the best route IF you’re going to go that route … because of their return policy ….but I still like “play before you pay” if at all possible, That’s the only way to be sure of the sound you’ll be getting…. Next year dude … three events … Pantasia … Steel Mountain … PanMarco ….come…come…come…..to at least one!!! 🤗🛸🎶🦋
Great comparison & perspective.

Thank you very much for so much information! You keep saying Amazon Prime, but there are dozens of brands on Amazon Prime. Specifically, which brand and model is the Chinese brand? It looks like an As Teman B-STL-10. Is it? I am considering that one. Is it tuned to 440 Hz?
Hello Bill. When I say- Amazon Prime- I used that to describe “only buy from Amazon Prime “ sellers. Because everyone has a price point or amount they want to spend on the instrument. Amazon has such a broad price range when it comes to almost any products- handpans can be had for $300- xyz$. Even among Asteman resellers! As far as which model or version of my Asteman- I don’t even know hahahaa. It’s been so long since then. I think back then- Asteman was just starting to sell on Amazon. Oh. It’s in 440Hz. Have a great day!
So it is an As Teman. Great! I am sure that is what I am going to buy. I really appreciate your fast response to my question. And thank you again for sharing such detailed information when comparing and contrasting the two instruments. I appreciate you taking the time to help educate myself and other prospective buyers.

cheap one sounds better ?
HI!. I don't want to say that it "sounded" better. But I can say this.....it sounded good....or decent depending to what or which that you are comparing it to.. The "inexpensive" drum here is nitrided so it has a more porcelain sound- muted and rounded. Not as much sustain as stainless or ember steel. To me, the quality is decent....and I still do use it quite a bit. And with so many hands "beating it".....I am surprised that its still in tune. This is my only handpan that I allow kids to play on. The Meridian on the other hand- to me- has a slightly longer sustain. The sounds are fuller and more contain(no crosstalk btwn notes). But the price doubled the "inexpensive HP". So this video is just to compare and hopefully help someone make their decisions which to buy. The pros and cons. have a great day!
My asteman D note is out of tune after 3 months. I didnt hit it hard its just garbage quality i think. Anyway to tune it?
So sorry to hear that! It's impossible to tune handpan- especially the ding by yourself. How badly is it out of tune? Has it been dropped? A lot of Amazon sellers sells Asteman handpan- UNLESS you purchased from Asteman.....the rest of the sellers are basically selling Asteman's branded pans that ARE REJECTED by the Asteman's store(* because they don't meet Asteman's Quality Control). SO instead of discarding these pans.....they sold them cheap to 3rd parties, and these 3rd parties turned around and sold them on Amazon as Asteman's handpan. Try contacting Asteman regarding the out of tune issue.Hopefully, they'll reply. Honestly, these are some of the issues when we purchased non-artisan handspans. Keep us posted ok? Good luck!
Oh, i thought it would be much worse. It sound pretty nice, for just meditative playing it's fantastic, when you think about the price.
Well....there's always pros and cons. And especially with these inexpensive Amazon drums. Its a hit or miss(but can be easily returned when purchased through PRIME) And in reality, for the "price" , its NOT a bad investment if you are just getting into it----or limited budget. It's kinda like a double edged sword.....if you decided that handpan is NOT for you....you won't feel the burn of wasting too much money. But if you were to get an expensive one....and then decided---NO, I don't want to pursue the instrument---then you are out of a good amount of $$$. The good news is that there are a lot of artisan beginner's pan right now that can be had for around $1k- which is still a lot of money for some. So...I guess pick your battle. Have a blessed day!
I like the $600's sound better (a long ring, when played fast is a problem)
Hello! the cheapie one is from Amazon- which is a hit or miss. only buy from Amazon prime seller......test it out....check it out- see if everything is in tune...and mostly, YOU- are happy with the sounds. Blessings.
do you have a link by chance for the one you got off amazon?
I just checked. The seller is not even listed anymore on Amazon. I remember typing in Asteman when I was searching for a Handpan back in the days. I am sure it was a reseller on Amazon. Definitely, buy from Prime sellers only. So you can return it if the HP arrived- out of tune or/and not to your standard/expectations. Have a great day
There is also variation between different manufacturers. One cheap handpan is not going to be the same as another, so be very careful.
Most Amazon pans are NOT from the actual maker/company. They were purchased from factory/maker/contractor(s). As I mentioned in the video....factory will sell the sub par/defects/leftover(that doesn't pass quality control) handpans to resellers(AMAZON) they go by grade B, BB,A,AA etc. Usually they are grade C-B.
Can you link me which one you got off Amazon?
Helllllooo! I cant even find the link now. It's been a few years since I got it. It was advertised as an Asteman handpan. But the seller wasn't Asteman. Another reseller on Amazon. As long as you are buying from Amazon....ANd must be from an *****AMAZON PRIME***** seller- so you can return it if it arrives out of tune.or not to your satisfaction. Have a great day!
ohh ...and this is the link for the Meridian---- www.meridianhandpans.co.uk
❤❤❤❤ Thank You 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome! have a blessed day!
Do you have a link for the cheaper handpan?
I dont anymore. But its on Amazon- Asteman handpan. Just be careful as many resellers listed these on Amazon. Basically they "purchased" the rejected quality pans from Factory(that made these for Asteman) All said, it's hard to know which and what is quality unless you purchased them directly from Asteman(make sure seller is Asteman). sigh......OK, Asteman makes decent handspans if you want to compare them to artisan pans. Just know what you want and what you are willing to spend- and go from there. ohhh...And make sure if you are buying from PRIME sellers if you decided to go that route. If pan arrived and "not to your standard"- you can always return them(PRIME sellers). All the best.
Thank you for this review: i first tried the Amazon one used it evey where played during less than a month evry two days BUT a note broke then a second fallowed then the rust : the sound was wonderful I returned it. I wanted to continue playing so i bought another one from amazon Chinese one too the sound was as a cook pan not lucky so i tried a third time with 9 notes (it was 10 the two firsts) the sound was beautiful bit different i keept it BUT a note has broken again and the rust was coming after my return i wanted to try a Real one.
I have a Shellopan i could not go back its twice the price but even if you give me an Amazon i will never accept it never it is not possible the sound and material the steel the touch all is greater all is better But all the Handpan Makers are different 😅
Try them if possible before buying
100% agree with you there. Personally, my advise- if you can "afford" it, definitely, get the artisan handpan. A lot of work are put into making one of these Handpan. Sorry to hear about your experience with "Amazon" pans. Its always been a hit or miss with "cheap pans". Amazon Prime made it easier to try out before "buying" them. Do not, do not ....never buy the cheapest on Amazon. They are usually C grade as far as quality. That's one reason....why we see same Handpan(or brand) but being sold at a very low price. What the factory does.....they resold these rejected quality pans to other sellers and in turn, these sellers sells them at a super low price. We had bad experience as well......2 of my students bought from Amazon- and they are #$%^&*. (that's my nice way of saying it LOL) But the others are good. Shellopan is a good "brand"- they do stand behind their sales- that's one reason to buy an artisan pan. have a blessed day, my friend.
Something new I learned. Thanks
Glad to hear it!
So i dont undrestand. Is Astmmn brand good?
Hello....well, its complicated . Is Asteman a good brand? Asteman is a decent brand. But great for the $$$.- The problem with Asteman is that, like many other "Chinese brand"- they don't have good quality control(production). They are mass produced. So said, I will NOT buy Asteman from ANYWHERE else BUT AMAZON. Make sure it is from/with AMAZON PRIME(logo next to seller). Since the quality control "sucks'......buying from Amazon Prime allows you to return the item if the item arrived out of tune. Asteman uses grade B-> A-ish graded metal(hence different pricings) As a beginner's drum and as for someone with very limited budget- its a great drum based on that. I got lucky with mine.....arrived all in tune. 2 of my student's Asteman arrived with 1-2 notes slightly out of tune. Definitely , download a tuning app to your phone to test it out. OHHH....customer service is definitely OUT of the QUESTION. I had emailed them multiple times regarding my students drums.....and got no answer back- period. So.....yea.....after sales....yea...horrible , terrible service. BUT am glad both were purchased through Amazon Prime. Sent both back.
@@maxandchloemeditation Thanks for the info. Do u have any good tuning app on ios? because what im trying they never detects a right note on my handpan.
Do the lower priced handpan drums get out of tune or have issues after a few years?
Thats a good and tough question. My Asteman is about 4 years old. And its still in tune(as the video). That's the drum also, that my daughter practiced on. I think with most handpan- proper care and maintenance is key. I do take the Asteman out quite a bit(the park, etc), and I have played it many times in the rain(light) and by the water. The most important is that not to leave the drum in a hot car or under the hot sun. And not to leave it in the bag for a long period of time(moisture are trapped inside the bag).
For any entry to average skilled player, I don't hear enough tone difference to justify hundreds or 1000 more.
GM! I agree....to a degree. Like the saying goes- you DO get what you pay for. For a beginner, and honestly- it's hard or impossible to justify the price of these "artisan" instruments.I personally DID NOT start with a $1000 drum......what if I don't like it? It's $$$$ down the drain. Artisan drum(s) prices are justified if you consider that they are handmade- each takes time and skill---and vast knowledge of tuning the instrument. Also the quality of steel/metal used. A small mistake- the drum is basically damaged(crosstalk etc).Tonality- now that's the big question: YOU WILL KNOW when you play an artisan drum. The sounds are more expressive and the "feel" of the timbre will resonate throughout - seriously. The artisan drum speaks to you......in a deeper level. BUT---BUT.....now we go back to the "inexpensive drum"- almost all all machine made and a few retuning done by hand(hammering). This allows the maker(s) to keep their cost down. Since they are massed produced- many do not have quality control(tuning, sounds, projections etc)-THATS WHY I SAID ONLY BUY FROM AMAZON PRIME SELLERS. You may have to go through a few to find one that is in tune(don't have to worry about this with Artisan drums). After sale support- again- are basically NONE if purchased from non artisan sellers. So said, it's kinda a catch 20-20-quality vs quantity. BUT as the video-You can find quality mass-produced products. That's one reason, I made the video because too many people "looked down" on people(like me at one point) with non artisan drums. Know and understand the "limitation" of the inexpensive drum. If you enjoy the drum, you can always upgrade to a better drum(artisan) later. Use it as a stepping stool- to learn and understand the instrument. And enjoy it! have a blessed day!
@maxandchloemeditation thank you for the detailed response. I play guitar and I have 200 dollar Takamine that sounds as good as my 1600 Alverez.
Is it built with the same craftsmanship? Likely not, but you'd be hard pressed to identify the difference on a blind listen.
Which amazon handpan would you recommend ? (aside of amazon prime to be able to return it easily if not tuned properly) Any link :) ?
Personally, I don't recommend buying from anywhere else but AMAZON PRIME. I have heard too many stories- especially buying from Alibaba,Wish,Temu etc. Not saying that you are getting a "bad one"- I just don't like taking chances like that and be disappointed when it's a "bad one". If you are in the states....AURA Handpan has beginners series under $1k. And they are based in Danville, NJ. Artisan handspans has since dropped a lot in prices. What is your budget?
Do you have a link?
Where did you get the branded handpan from? The more expensive one? I am trying to buy one for myself, but I want good quality
There are so many excellent artisan makers out there. Do you have a price limit?
The pan I have in the video for comparison is from Meridian.

On Amazon....you can find it under Asteman. and HAVE an awesome day!
Do you use Any effect in the mics?
3 audio capture devices were used here.
1 )Tascam- overhead.
2) iPhone- at sight of video.
3) Zoom DR2 which was on the floor about 6 ft away to capture the room ambience(and low notes).
A little EQ during the final mix to bring down the highs(master)- that's about it.
No panning on the Tascam's and Zoom's audio.
Slight L(9 o'clock) R(3 o'clock) panning on the iPhone's audio.
@@maxandchloemeditation so...if i would buy Any of em just to play in forest hardly listen the sounds or.. not so clear as to recommend to buy one?
$600 when they should only cost $250 to make. I work in manufacturing. They should call them Hand Pocket drums. Rip off.
GM. Are you referring to the Amazon drums? If yes......its subjective.Altthough they are factory made. The final product(s) requires some hand tuning(quenching). I shared this in one of my videos-- during the process / or production. The final drum will then be graded into different class - Grade A, AA, B , BB, C, CC so forth. A- AA: no blemishes...and 100% in perfect tune. B-BB....slight blemishes but in good tune...C-CC a bit out of tune.....blemishes etc. Thats how sellers(on Amazon) are able to sell them "cheap" based on what they "buy" from the factories.
I just received an order from Amazon as a gift, and the handpan smoothness looks like your higher-end brown one, but the color is like your navy color. The sounds seem in the same tone as when you play in the video. So the surface being roughly looking may be ok based on how the brown handpan looks. I am new to the instrument. Is it normal that it came in with a semi-oily surface? And the places on the seeming brand-new handpan look dirty. I tried wiping lightly, and am questioning if there was rust underneath and someone tried to spray-paint. The dirty places are around the lower part of the pan, and they do not seem to go away upon gentle wiping (I don’t want to force-rub). Can the handpans rust?
Yes Yes Yes! Most "new handspans" will/usually have oil on the surface. They are usually shipped like that to protect the surface of the drum. So yes, its normal. You can wipe them down with paper towel or lint free microfiber cloth. Basically the oil- are to protect the surface from rust. Nitrided handpan don't usually rust with proper care- oiling.....keeping moisture away etc. Amazon handspans are usually mass produced. Makers usually pay more attention to the top- visible surface than the bottom. No need to try to force rub it. Have a blessed day!
Amazon link?
GM Michelle, I don't have the link to mine anymore- its been 3 years or so. But you can search for As Teman Handpan on Amazon. Just make sure that the seller is an Amazon Prime seller- so you can return the item if it's NOT in tune or to your satisfaction. Have a blessed day!
No m'ha quedat clar, es tracta de comparar dos hands de diferent procedència?
It's about comparing practicality. Handpan- as we know- they are expensive. and yes, the expensive ones are worth and justified. Not everyone can afford that or want to spend that kind of money on their first one. The massed produced handpan)mostly all from China) were created to fill the void of "cheap handpans". in our No right, NO wrong scenario- all massed produced handpans are looked down upon. Many will be "mocked" if they dare post them playing these cheap handpans. In truth, the artisan handpans are quality- and u cant match nor complain about. This video is to show the practicality of the cheaper handpan. and what to expect. As I mentioned- its like comparing a Honda and a Mercedes. Both will get you from point A to point B. have a great day.
500 is a lot to spend on something just to play around with. I feel like people get the handpan because of the amazing sound, no chances should be taken when spending that kind of money, some of the Asteman may arrive sounding great, some, like the one I had, are dissapointing. That is a big chunk of money to try something, if your going to commit to that much, may as well save a little and go for the better options. I'm not even gonna spend 300 to give a child to bang on lol none the less 500-800. Get the better quality, and teach them kids how to play it! Muchlove!
I agree. I used to keep the handpan in my meditation studio. Where I teach kids etc. The handpan is such an amazing instrument. The sounds, the LOOK itself is just so mesmerizing and fascinating at the same time.
Why do they sound so bad?
well....depending on what you call bad. If you are referring to the inexpensive handpan- bad: in so many word- is acceptable. For the money....or price....again, acceptable. if you are comparing to the artisan pans(OR the more expensive ones- Yishama etc. Yes, its going to be NIGHT and DAY. Same is I compare the inexpensive handpan to my ISKRA stainless. Then....... we look at the price differences. Do you want to spend a few hundred or a couple of thousands? So said, it's subjective. What if you spent thousands and decided not to pursue this passion? Thats thousands out of your pocket- unless you have the money. All said, all depends of the purchaser on.....what they want. what the can afford. and what they are willing to compromise. Have a blessed day!
Ich spiele selbst auf dieser Handpan, sie ist absolut geeignet für Anfänger und klingt echt gut.
I totally agree with you. Yes, it's not the greatest sounding handpan....but for the price(as expected)...it's a good beginner's pan. A few of my students got this as well. It's all about what you can afford.... Have a blessed day.
Do you have a link to them on Amazon?
Mine was purchased over 3 years ago. and it was from Asteman. And make sure that the seller- is a Amazon Prime seller. So no hassle return if the drum arrived damaged, out of tune....etc.
Lemme guess, there's a reason why you don't show your face, right?
Showed my face on most of my videos. This one, I did it with face but decided to zoom closer to the handspans. have a blessed day.
This is horrible. Dude talks so slow and for him to not remember what one of them costs.... Smfh
GM and thank you for the advice. The problem is that I was told to slow down as my older videos- I talked too fast! I was nervous....haha. I dont remember tall he prices because I have about 40 plus drums - each tailored to my specific healing session. On top of that----singing bowls.....gongs etc. You can see those in my older videos as well.....Anyway, the gold drum behind me is an Iskra Stainless....and that I remember cuz it was close to $3500.......well..... getting old don't help with the memory! hahahah. have a great day!
@@maxandchloemeditation Cool deal man, I will definitely check out your other videos as I want to know more about these drums... I'm just now getting into them, but kinda old myself. I guess its never too late to do something! Thanks for the update, looking forward to your other vids.

Hi..nice video can you share the amazon handpan link ? that sounds very nice. what brand is it?
Hello- the one I got from Amazon was the first gen Asteman. This was a while back. I ve checked my Amazon orders- and the seller wasn't listed anymore. As I mentioned in the video- ONLY buy from Amazon PRIME sellers. A lot of Asteman drums are currently sold by other sellers as well. All based on grade(which they won't disclose to buyer- hence the pricing)
@@maxandchloemeditation Thanks for the reply.. i will check it out ! :)
Now for $260 over 1k yea, I will buy the cheap one to get my feet wet. No need for a professional instrument.
Honestly, it's a complicated scenario. Artisan pans has more "pros" than inexpensive pans- sounds, quality etc. within budget: Only "inexpensive" pans I recommend are the ones offered by AMAZON PRIME. These cheaper plans...or beginners pan lacked quality control. SO only BUY from AMAZON PRIME- and definitely test out the notes with a tuner.
