I’ve looked into buying a hand pan a couple of years ago and I never understood why they were so expensive. I’m glad I watched this so I can justify the price
Zero they are €2000. It’s not bad for all the time that goes into it. Also the value is still there after you buy it, I just mean the secondary market for them is still high.
Tanja Ridder if they keep value like that then I understand. Now I have also finished the entire video I see why, the equipment to build obviously doesn’t come cheap.

I once thought I might make these for a living. I had custom equipment made to form the shells, made many prototypes. Life took another turn. Maybe I will go back to it in retirement.
I've always wanted these so badly, but the hard process just to make one of these is incredibly astounding. When I do have the money, I'll buy one, one day. Along with a tuning hammer, start hammering away on things in the stores, parks, poles, tune a dent out of a car, you name it. There's so much that could be done with that tuning hammer and other objects. Make a steel roof over the porch, with hammered in notes. So when it rains, the notes will play too.Just softly.

Probably the best almost-random RUclips click of 2019 so far! The fascinating process of making such a thing - into which MUCH more work than I imagined seems it must go - and the... how to phrase it... mystical, almost mythical sound you can get if you have the skills to play it... oh, man! As soon as I saw the processes and the workshop and the tools, I thought 'this must be a rich man's toy', and then someone made reference to 'three thousand', so I guess 3k Euros or thereabouts. Worth every single Euro/Cent... if you can spend that kind of money on an instrument, I am sure. The hours, perhaps even weeks at a time, I would lose to this if I had it and could play it. I haven't found an 'instrument' this fascinating since I first tried (and failed) to play a didjeridoo. I would still love to learn how to play a didj', but this... this seems likes it's on a whole new level of... of... of... 'absorbing me' as it were. Now I want to check out several things related to this. I saw his gadget (phone?) measuring the (insert technical phrase here) when he was tuning the pan. What was he measuring? I can grasp the idea instinctively, but I cannot put into words. Something about Hertz or frequencies or notes (beyond me). I guess I should now watch more videos about this and perhaps more importantly about musical theory / sound. Please give me links or key-words to search if you know them, thank you. Thanks for a really great video.
@@numeninstruments Thanks for letting me know that. Now... I wonder if you ship to Japan? Seriously, although I have literally (and I do mean literally) no ability to play music, no theoretical or practical knowledge of music, and not a single musical bone in my body, I am going to think carefully about ordering one of these. Are you (Numen Instruemnts) the maker/man in this video? I guess you'll have a website, so I might know the answer to that question before you see this. I ride motorbikes, and at 10% the cost of my latest toy (Yamaha Tmax 530DX), I feel confident that I would get as much enjoyment from one of these as I get from a bike. You may receive an enquiry from me in an email soon to tell me what I need to know before committing and ordering. At 47 years old given I know nothing about music, it may be too late.... but I would not like to believe that. Thanks again.
@@staninjapan07 You wont regret getting one. Music theory knowledge is minimal. Mostly rhytm basic knowledge. As pans are tuned to particular scale there is no wrong sounding note on a pan. Just choose beginner friendly scale such as d celtic minor etc. Much groovy playing revolves around the middle ding and rhytm playing.
@@HardIsEasy I couldn't agree with Roberts comment more, I was curious to see the making of a hang drum, even though I already knew it was just beating metal into shape and at 24 minutes long I thought I would just be bailing out before hitting halfway. But watching this was a magical journey, the music, the making, the editing all just come together perfectly and I watched the full 24 minutes entranced. Seem like a great bunch of characters too.

I am a blacksmith and machinist myself and I must say you have some of the best skills I've ever seen. :) Excellent work. Maybe people can understand why this cost some money as there is a lot of work, skills, and love going into the workpiece before it is a finished instrument. Funny enough I came here from hydroforming etc. in order to inspire me for a dome piece on a still I'm about to make. I got fascinated about your work and couldn't help watching the whole video. Tempering the metal will change the structure and release the tensions put in it by the mechanical impact brought to it. You are a true artist and an excellent craftsman. :)
Thank you very much for your comments Kalle it means a lot to read this from another craftsman. And yes! That's The reason of "normalizing" the metal with heat
Absolutely ASTONISHING. I love this instrument so much, and the hardwork that's put behind the making of it is amazing. It looks and sounds so beautiful. I wish to own a handpan someday.

Appreciate you Sir! 22:29 is a priceless moment. And your handwriting is really beautiful too. ನೀವು ಒಬ್ಬ ದೈವ ಕೃಪಾಪಾತ್ರರಾದ ಕಲಾವಿದರು.
Whoa! So much time is needed for doing this one instrument. Especially tuning and make it stable at the right tune. Great work. I wouldn't have enough patience to make something like this.
This was more than informative, from the the visuals, the sounds of the making, the sounds of the playing, the sounds of the laughter and the beautiful accents in conversations. Topped off with insightful editing that is well paced and flows naturally.
After he hands you the pan asks you to tune it, I say to myself "well I saw this coming, universal sense of humour", then the next part I see they brought more pans and pots, now that got me laughing hard, can't believe they went through with it XD
Throughout the ages instrument makers have toiled to produce the best they know how -- it's part science and a large part passion. 300 years after Stradivari and Guarneri toiled to make the best they knew how and they are still, 300 years later, among the finest instruments ever made with some worth $10M. This passion lives on and we are here to witness!
This video is honestly amazing! The editing and the humor and everything had me hooked all the way through and I'm super glad I stumbled across this as it was really informative. I always loved the sound of this instrument, first hearing it in Minecraft in the song "Aria Math", and then later in Factorio in the song "The Search For Iron"... and as someone who's very into music, I always wanted one but couldn't understand why they were so incredibly priced Obviously I knew there must've been a good reason and it was probably way harder than I was imagining, but at the time in my head it just looked like a big dome of metal some machine could've easily pressed into or something... this totally shows off all the hard work and time it takes to make just one of these things! The video is very charming and nice, and I love the music being played throughout the video!! Thank you! :)
We need more videos like this to appreciate the amazing work on the Master Craftsman and the Artist. Phenomenal job guys from the bottom of my heart all the way from New Jersey. Haha Mardid lol joking
It is fascinating how this musician and craftsman creates his instrument and how he tunes it. I would like to see him make and obtain a 12-note handpan instrument, It would be sublime to have so many glorious notes.😊
A big part of mastering this is the dramatic wiggly arm movements and getting your wipe technique down. Gotta wipe that bad boy down every few minutes or the mysticism leaks out.
Note that he also wiped his head at least once. Perhaps a transference of mystical powers has taken place as well. Magic cloth. Magic music. Magic pan.
Magnificent video, and it's fascinating to see again the "old" way of building handpans, much in the mood of "The birth of a Russian handpan" - if I have that title right. (Of Master Victor Levinson; old video). GREAT video editing (and creation) and I LOVE your sense of humor. Keep up the great work!
CarolWCamelo Can you tell me what the „old“ way of building handpans is? Or what the „new“ way is? Im a little confused am i missing something here? He is more using the „new“ way of building, dimple pressing, pneumatic hammer shaping.. tuning technique more in the direction of the steelpan like nearly all makers in this time. Nothing new or old.. I like what you hear in the video a lot, very nice instruments.. made with ayasa shells am i right?
Numen Instruments Ah ok thank you it makes sense. To be honest on a finished instrument of yours, it looks like the backing is done with pneumatic and not hand hammering. they look sooo clean much love to detail and very much love in it over all
The film itself is as much a work of art as the instrument being made or the music made with the finished product. Subscribed, and looking forward to whatever projects catch your eye in the future.
I am fascinated, knowing with the good vibes that they prepare the instrument so that it reaches our hands ready to emanate that love in beautiful musical notes, I want one made by your magical hands, how do I do it???
Before I saw this video I thought life was okay. I did not know what a handpan was. I did not know how to make one. Now I am lost. I know the mystery of how it is made; I know how beautiful it sounds when played by an expert; but there is a problem: there is no way I could possibly make one with such craftsmanship, nor any way I can make such beautiful music with it and yet I feel incomplete not being able to. Amazing video, thank you for sharing the mystery.
Each instrument an individual masterpiece. I play a makers cello, have a beautiful electric bass with specially tuned timber’s. I’m now inspired to practice and to have an handpan made for me. Worthwhile playing and worthwhile instruments take time. Thanks for the fun and the making journey. 🤗

@@herooftime9921 well Little Mermaid was released in 1989 and the first Handpan was made in 2000 so you‘re not entirely correct. You‘re probably thinking of steel drums
Guys, that is just too freakin' cool. What a gorgeous sound. Somewhat similar to the steel drums of the islands, but definitely with a unique and different timbre. Talk about VALUE ADDED! ;-) Bird sounds are ridiculously good. That tone comes down so quickly with each strike, I'll bet you have to get really gentle for the very fine tuning. And it seems kinda like the measure twice, cut once idea. As in, I've cut it THREE times and it's STILL too short. ;-)
back a year later... beautiful video :) what a lovely atmosphere, I hope you guys are selling your lovely handpans and earning enough to stay afloat in this hard time. Admire the skill involved so very much!

Each one has to be hand built and hand tuned by a craftsman taking lots of time! They can't be built by machine or by Chinese factory labor.
Looking at how it's done, dropping it from enough height would be a somewhat expensive way of losing the tuning.

@@eduardgercog4422 Thank you.
I really love the editing of this video! A seamless mix of the wonderful artist playing the Handpan and the master crafting it at the same time.
Whoever edited this video did an amazing job!
Cheers Robert ;)
@@HardIsEasy I couldn't agree with Roberts comment more, I was curious to see the making of a hang drum, even though I already knew it was just beating metal into shape and at 24 minutes long I thought I would just be bailing out before hitting halfway. But watching this was a magical journey, the music, the making, the editing all just come together perfectly and I watched the full 24 minutes entranced. Seem like a great bunch of characters too.
Amazing. I always wondered how these are made. The joyfulness and humor of the people is inspiring and uplifting. The love shines through.
after watching this i knew i had to go the the kitchen and find out what my cast iron skillet was tuned too, turns out its g#5
If you need fine tuning, you can find Mario contacts in video desc.
@@HardIsEasy it was a little flat, however I would rather wack a steak on it than hit it with a hammer

And if you want to learn how to play HandPan - I've been enjoying this course a lot masterthehandpan.teachable.com/?ref=HardIsEasy
I also asked the author of a course for a discount that I could share with all of you, so here - enter this code HARDISEASY at checkout and you get a 30$ off - it's also a referral link and gives me small benefit as well, so everybody wins.
Okay, that's pretty cool.

this was an amazing piece! brilliantly shot and edited. I WANT one of these handpans! but I'll settle for my kitchen pots for the moment!
You need a tuning service? :)))
I am a blacksmith and machinist myself and I must say you have some of the best skills I've ever seen. :)
Excellent work.
How this institute you for your dome, good luck with that
Absolutely ASTONISHING. I love this instrument so much, and the hardwork that's put behind the making of it is amazing. It looks and sounds so beautiful. I wish to own a handpan someday.
I think the most difficult thing about the Hang drum is acquiring one.
Actually it's different these days, it's very easy to get a handpan. Mario sells his instruments...u can order one from him directly, just go to www.numeninstruments.com/
Ariel Zutel looked that up, it’s more expensive then one on amazon
@@mickluvin619 u can't get a real handpan on Amazon , sorry. Anything u find the will be either overpriced or super low quality... Mario's instruments cost and 1400€ and that's a fair price for the quality of what u get...

Just gorgeous instrument, wonderful craftsmanship, in awe of the work and finesse involved in its making. Thanks so much for sharing this.
the idea of the tuned pot releasing its tension made me laugh.
"The sauce exploded all over the kitchen, but it sounded magnificent!"

No wonder these pans are so expensive. Takes soooo much time.

So much energy and passion. Love the video! Hope you all are still enjoying the magic of the instrument and music 🎶
A very nice video. Especially I like the kind the video is produced. It's full of harmony between the scenery and sound. It's perfect!
Uuu thanks!

I was thinking they could use him for an ad.
Whoa! So much time is needed for doing this one instrument. Especially tuning and make it stable at the right tune. Great work. I wouldn't have enough patience to make something like this.
Fantastic ! I’ve been playing the pans over 15 years but I love the build process. I have no desire to make them but I appreciate the makers! ✋✨✨✨
Sound design, editing and pacing was phenomenal, well done!

random guy asking him to tune his pans: "how many clips did you use?"
the guy that tuned his pans: "yes"
Throughout the ages instrument makers have toiled to produce the best they know how -- it's part science and a large part passion. 300 years after Stradivari and Guarneri toiled to make the best they knew how and they are still, 300 years later, among the finest instruments ever made with some worth $10M. This passion lives on and we are here to witness!
This video is honestly amazing! The editing and the humor and everything had me hooked all the way through and I'm super glad I stumbled across this as it was really informative.
I always loved the sound of this instrument, first hearing it in Minecraft in the song "Aria Math", and then later in Factorio in the song "The Search For Iron"... and as someone who's very into music, I always wanted one but couldn't understand why they were so incredibly priced
Obviously I knew there must've been a good reason and it was probably way harder than I was imagining, but at the time in my head it just looked like a big dome of metal some machine could've easily pressed into or something... this totally shows off all the hard work and time it takes to make just one of these things!
The video is very charming and nice, and I love the music being played throughout the video!! Thank you! :)
Love the video. The music, the craftmanship, the humor & the editing. Just great. One of the best videos I've watched in a long time.

Extreme loving care and veneration for the sound. Major hand technique. Artistry!
C'mon don't tell this everyone, it's a secret
Amazing to see! What a great documentary. Great people, it felt like hanging out with you guys.
I am fascinated, knowing with the good vibes that they prepare the instrument so that it reaches our hands ready to emanate that love in beautiful musical notes, I want one made by your magical hands, how do I do it???
My mom would excel at keeping this instrument clean.
"how long do you cook your rice?"
"two octaves!"
made me laugh out loud
Each instrument an individual masterpiece. I play a makers cello, have a beautiful electric bass with specially tuned timber’s. I’m now inspired to practice and to have an handpan made for me. Worthwhile playing and worthwhile instruments take time. Thanks for the fun and the making journey. 🤗
2 great artists! 1 handpan musician and 1 handpan maker! Amazing both of them.
I love this, I would very much get one of these, beautiful and steady craftsmanship. Great job !! 10/10! ✨💯💕I can’t even describe the ways this instruments sounds to me. Most calming sounds I’ve heard come from a pan!
"I have a tool for you to play"
"Uyyy el pajilleitor"

...you've never seen the little mermaid? Lol
@@herooftime9921 well Little Mermaid was released in 1989 and the first Handpan was made in 2000 so you‘re not entirely correct. You‘re probably thinking of steel drums
@@herooftime9921 Never.
"oh shit you were counting? I need to concentrate" xD very relateable
When client can see in-constructing product and ready product at same time.
