    I've been considering getting a gaming phone for a while now. Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted a "1 stop shop" kind of device. It's why a lot of us are drawn to the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch. We want to take our games with us and this device looks to close that gap and it looks like it might get us close to that idea.

    Pretty niche game, but Geometry Dash is uncapped(unless capped by the phone manufacturer, Realme midrangers were notorious for this). The framerate matches the refresh rate as much as possible until it can't, usually when playing laggy levels.
    And the funny thing is, the game is **noticeably** smoother and more fun to play the higher the refresh rate, and if you're really sunk in and you're beating harder levels, higher refresh rates actually make the game easier. Most top players in PC have 360Hz monitors as a standard in order to beat the hardest levels possible.

    I’ve thought about getting a gaming phone - they usually have the features I’m looking for in a device. No stupid notch or hole in my display (usually), dual FORWARD facing speakers, headphone jack, decent cameras, etc.
    But I would avoid any phone with active cooling like the Red Magic has for my use. I work in a VERY dusty environment, and the vent would be choked off in several months if not sooner.
    So far the Sony Xperia 1 MK III is still in the lead to be my next phone, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what the MK IV will bring to the table.

    If people expect excelnt cameras from this kind of device they will be disappointed, but every device has a target, and for this, is gamers. You don't buy a "CAT" phone for the display for example, you buy it for the build quality and other features related to industrial productivity.

    Oh my god. You're the first techtuber who gives GENUINE advice. Great point about simping about ''avergae consumers''. I must say HW unboxed seems this way about laptop reviews. Where's the tuning of a laptop? No proper word on performance and temp reductions. Not to mention techtubers simp for shitty matte ips displays with high refresh rates. No, we want higher quality displays not shitty matte displays on gaming laptops which stay indoors.
    Just wanna add one point. Software updates do jack shit on a phone. I can still be just fine with android 9 as long as its stock. This redmagic 7 pro has a stock rom. No bloat. You can't even say apple has no bloat. So I'd actually count the lack of updates as a personal preference. Do you want updates that do nothing but slow down your phone? Get a samsung or chinese phone.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  2 года назад

      That's pretty high praise 😁
      Since I left Pocketnow, I've been trying to describe phone performance more like a good laptop review.
      And I'm with you for most of that, definitely more a hardware than software guy, though I do appreciate timely bug fixes. Like I'm revisiting the Moto Edge, and it's incredible how much of that phone is actively improved through little updates over Google Play, but then techies complain "it doesn't get enough OTA updates!" 🤦‍♂️

    • @siyzerix
      @siyzerix 2 года назад

      @@SomeGadgetGuy You should check out custom roms. They can make a budget phone rival a flagship that costs 4x as much in everyday general use. For example my poco x3 pro now has better software than moto edge but costs half as much and packs more performance. I even have better battery life than the moto (9hr vs 12hr). I've got more privacy on my custom rom than the moto.
      Know the best part? Xiaomi phones are the easiest to install custom roms for because xiaomi actually supports it. Something right to repair and techtubers kinda forget. Whats the point of repairing a old samsung phone when the lag makes it unusable? That same phone that is shit at privacy due to all the tracking. A custom rom would fix that but phone companies make it hard to install it, with very, very few exceptions. I should damn well be able to install whatever OS I want on my phone. It'd be like if you couldn't uninstall linux on laptops or windows on macbooks.
      Dude, you are unreal. Your point about techies complaining about updates is so damn true. I don't need the latest android, I'd be fine with android 9. Just those bug fixes are enough. Even iPhones don't benefit from updates that much. Whats the point of installing the latest iOS update on a iPhone SE 1?
      You've got some reach. You should really talk about custom roms on phones. They really can massively improve a phone. Better battery life, smoother performance, lighter OS, more privacy, etc.

    gaming is not my thing, but the rog phones are incredibly feature complete and have kinda decent security support so they are always on my radar.
    I am not sure if it's relevant for the video but as I see people talking about game pass, I've been recently having fun with steam link/remote play (stream your games from your pc to your phone/tablet trough the steam client) and since a lot of steam decks are being delayed it might be a neat way for some people to have a mobile gaming experience with non specialized hardware.

      I ran the game for an hour without the Built in fan turned on (by accident) and it still ran smooth.
      On a game like Apex your only getting 90-100 minutes of battery life (with the turbo fan turned on). The fan has 2 setting eco and turbo. So you could put the fan on eco and play around with the phones settings to achieve longer battery life.

I doubt an Apple or Samsung would make a phone with a fan. Silent devices are great but putting an SOC that could be a laptop CPU in a small, sealed, glass box you hold in your hand to use is asking for heat issues. I think this phone shows what other phone makers are up against in the demand for higher numbers to sell phones or win You Tube.

    Never owned a gaming smartphone before, but I would like to own one in the future. But I am still considering between gaming smartphone, switch oled and steam deck and which one offers the best value.
    Each of them has their own merits, :
    1) A gaming smartphone would be around the size of a normal smartphone, so it is the easiest to carry around.
    2) Switch oled can let me game with my family, up to 4 players.
    3) Steam deck can play many desktop games in steam while also having a desktop mode for a handheld console.
    I also want to ask if there are any usable custom roms for the redmagic? Because if updates for the smartphone has stopped, we might have to switch to a custom rom. Just hope there is a custom rom that can use the internal fan.

    Never owned a gaming phone, not for lacking of wanting one though. I usually will get flagship phones and just treat them as a gaming phone. I would like to get one eventually. Also, Wild Rift can run at 120hz and is a pretty good benchmark game.

    I have the ROG Phone 2 for nearly 3 years now and it's the best phone I've used. The performance is still rock solid, 120 Hz is just so good, and the battery life is awesome
    It has its issues such as the less stellar camera but it is NOT a bad camera. It's not the best, definitely not, but not so bad either. I'm thinking of replacing it's battery as it has degraded significantly, around 5 to 6 SoT with 120 Hz all the time, or simply upgrade to the ROG 5S
    Btw, pls try AetherSX2 PS2 emulator. It's a godsend!

    Thinking about getting the Red Magic 7 pro. But 1080p screen, no water resistance, and subpar selfie camera might be too many compromises.
    I currently have the OnePlus 7 pro. I really hate notches or cutouts. It still performs very well and battery life is good enough, but the pop-up camera stopped working. I'm debating repairing this phone or getting a new one, no phones have interested me enough to consider buying except the Red Magic 7 pro. Let me know what you think I should do

    I wish lenovos gaming phones would adopt the dextop modes that their tablets have adopted or even motos ready for. as much as I want a gaming phone (big cod mobile player) I just can't not have a dextop mode. That said, I would 100% jump on the RedMagic line (with Asus coming in really really close) if I didn't care about dextop modes
