I took a bit of a turn then. She was my local MP many years ago and it took years to get that fcuking voice out of my head.
The best way to not be in poverty is to walk away from your debts and not pay your taxes just like Rishi's wife .
How so? What did she do?
@@darkangel686868 the chancellor's wife has recently had 2 businesses she is involved with go bankrupt leaving creditors with 100m in debt and hmrc owed 1/2 m.
@@jonhill7858 Wow, that is such a disgrace. Shows lack of character not paying off debts when they clearly have the funds to do so. But that’s the Torys all over. One rule for the few, another rule for the many.
And your former leader Tony Blair?
@@rachaelray4693 to quote the late Za Za Gabor taxes are only for the little people darling's.
This whole video just sounds like one long refrain of 'well I got mine, Jack and I am taking this ladder with me'. Truly depressing.
When Sunak says "Picture this, you're a young family..." he sounds like an alien who doesn't conceive that families are made up of separate entities.
He is after all a failed Thunderbird puppet
One of the best annual Owen Jones traditions... The Tories never get any less weird or deliberately ignorant!
Weird is exactly the word that sprang to my mind too
This just proves what a sad state of affairs we’re living in - Tories remain unchanged since the 1980s. In fact, nothing has changed - only got increasingly worse
You so wright .. I can't believe what I was just watching - how on earth did we allow does out of touch people in power??
You can tell by all of there comment , that they really do hate the poor of society !
@@peterbrown3944 Moreover, in very general terms, nothing has changed in hundreds of years between the attitude of the governing elite towards the majority of the population. We’re currently living in an era which also extends back centuries, arguably to the Roman Empire - the template upon which modern Western imperialism and politics is built, with a smattering of Ancient Greece
"We can't base our economy on people living off the State." 😏
Then why don't they lower MPs salaries; and take corporations off welfare, and tax breaks?
So why don't all Tories agree with raising the minimum wage and stronger trade unions 🤔
That wee virgin's hard drive wants checking.
Or why don’t they force all MPs to have no other jobs...that would clear the Tory benches..
Owen: "How many people are gonna be put into poverty by the universal credit uplift being scrapped?"
Tory Ministers: "Hello, it's great to see you today, how about this weather, it sure is a hot one, isn't it?"
"No one. Have your heard some of the other policies we're introducing that aren't really relevant?"
"Depends on your definition of poverty" is a perennial classic... They should ask the UN.
"Depends on your definition of poverty" not much more needs to be said...
The easiest way to pretend you are not driving people into poverty is to ignore relative poverty as a definition
The “It depends on your definition of death” at 18:40 is even better!
@@Jay_Johnson And vice versa. It's a politically loaded term.
'People need to sit down and work out their money'. Wow, He's solved it! 🙄
Watching Michael Gove dodge Owen's question for two minutes straight was comedy gold
Excellent journalism Owen. Aghast at the level of shamelessness on display here. Depressing that there are genuinely masses of people out there with similar ignorant views.
i guess you didn't see the Labour conference , it was embarrassing, it's weird don't you think that the Tories are far more tolerant i.e they have no proper with a left wing hack like Jones where Labour members look like they about to Lynch anyway that doesn't follow their cult.
I'm not sure you got the memo, but Labour is the NASTY party, the party of intolerance, the party of hate and envy and well frank fully the not very smart.
“Hard work pays”… erm. Where do you start!? With the private-school leavers who walk straight into investment banking careers or the working-class individuals who spend their entire lives slogging their guts out in factories and warehouses?
For such knowledgeable armchair economists, their understanding of the concept of excess deaths is pretty questionable.
Pretentiousness is the first required quality of being a Tory.
Party of con-artists and spivs.
I'm getting the feeling that they don't want you there Owen......
Imagine if clips like this were shown on mainstream news programmes. Imagine the outrage the public would feel.
I think Gove was paraphrasing Stalin when implying, "One child going into poverty is a tragedy. 800,000 is an abstract figure."
One family going into poverty may be bad luck but 800,000 is a failure of government !!
"We want to try and get a few more skills" - DWP minister when asked about people being plunged into imminent poverty
That has made me cry. They are gaslighting so many people. They really want to see people begging on the streets.
"It depends on your definition of death"!!!!!!!! Amazing Tory!!! Beyond satire etc. etc.
Yeah. That. 😢
Some of these people are deranged, quite honestly.
Man, they are so out of touch 🤦🏻♂️ It's all so sad. 😔
“I’m not sure it’s the governments job to deal with poverty” Their only job is to help run this country and as much as they don’t like it, poor people also live in this country. It’s not rocket science
It is the function of government to provide equal opportunity. If you want to give better quality education to kids of rich families, you give taxpayer monies to the private schools those kids attend. You want to give kids of poorer families “equal opportunity”? Provide that money to public schools and fund social security so they can start their race closer to richer kids. This is not complicated. Destitution is largely driven by bad public policy beginning with unequal funding of eduction. The Tories basically want rich kids to have an unfair advantage
It takes balls to do this, appreciate your efforts.
So many of these answered scream: "I need this to be true, so I'm going to ignore all evidence to the contrary and insist it is"
The disconnect with the real world is depressing. How do these people even exist.
It's called neoliberalism and they all believe it.
Only 6 minutes in and I already want to cry at the state of peoples condescending opinions of others who suffer.
"It depends on your definition of death" - what an EXTRAORDINARY statement - ONLY a tory!!!
I don't know how people can be so, so dim, so utterly disconnected from reality, so politically and economically backward and illiterate.
Most have absolute knowledge of what they are doing the are either psychopaths lying through their teeth to the public or spineless collaborators lying to themselves so they can sleep at night.
Gove prefers to dance like a weirdo than answering an important question like how many people will be put into poverty with tory policies
As a serious adult you simply cannot say in earnest that the government's handling of the pandemic was anything other than horrendous.
The deaths of many thousands of people are on Johnson's hands.
Yeah all the answers to the covid question were: "we have aging population/obesity epidemic/underlying health condition etc."
The question is Why were those people able to get covid at a higher rate than other countries not why did they die rather than survive.
The reason why is the horrendous negligence from the tories in the interest of the economy rather than the health of us, the expendable public. That's the reason why you can't say our handling of covid was a solid 8 you bunch of tweed snakes.
Rishi's public speaking voice sounds like the newest text-to-speech tech...
It's chilling
Strange thing is
Listen to sunak on radio.
He sounds exactly like
Ed milliband.
Weird.
He is winning and annoying and rich and detached from reality and must not be in charge of the public finances
After the Universal Credit cut, I will have to take care of my wife and myself on £317 a month. She is foreign, has no access to NHS or any benefits. We are both over sixty and have come to UK after living working abroad. I am a UK citizen. She is not.
Are you close to receiving a state pension and/or Pension Credit?
Sending my best as it sounds a difficult situation. Maybe one of our "European friends" would treat you better because more emphasis is placed on adequate social security?
When Tories say that there is no such thing as government's money, only tax payer's money, what they really mean is the tax payers own the public debt, the profits go to corporates and in terms of this government, Tory donor's corporates.
I've had covid pretty bad and not recovered yet, but I'd still choose covid over attending the Tory Party Conference.
Ten years of suffering Long-Tory.
Love to see a Tory define what a well paid job is, some years ago their leader said 250k a year was “chicken feed”
How anyone can vote for these people is beyond comprehension. Tories out. Owen lead the protests!
And how contemptuous was Hancock? Coward that he is.
Sometimes I get concerned in my moderate left position that I’m just secretly a Tory and can’t admit it to myself. Watching this reassures that I actually do still have a heart. What an appalling group of individuals.
‘People living off the state’ says the party who loves the Royal Family and happy to build a yacht for £400 million.
They (Tory MPs) are only too happy to live off the state all their working lives - taxpayer funded to the tune of £82k pa plus £150k pa expenses, then automatic elevation to the Lords for another £300+ per diem until they pop their clogs.
You're so damn courageous to attend that stanking cesspool of vileness.. I'd be heaving & emptying my guts I couldn't stand the greed, the stupidity, the hypocrisy, the vileness, the mindlessness
Disgusting…. The narrow mindedness, the lack of self reflection and empathy, the prejudice and the total lack of sense of reality…
I braced myself Owen, still shook. We know they think like this but hearing these words stumble out of their mouths fucks up my whole nervous system! Ooft. Brave journalism, great film making. Ace!
I’d just like to say thank you for spending your free tune as well as money for coming to to this interview with these ministers. You should be the new priminister !
Cutting between a bunch of sheep all repeating the answer “free thinking” was priceless
How is the man in a MAG hat the most logical thinking person interviewed in this video?
You forgot to mention the “ iron maiden “ t shirt “ , thatcher sprang to mind
So basically what they're saying is '.. people aren't really poor, and if they are really poor then they're not managing their money because they're probably playing bingo, smoking and drinking, and I have no idea how much universal credit actually is, but if it's £75 a week like you say then those recipients need to sit down and learn to manage it or pull themselves out of poverty because it's self-inflicted..'
Well done Owen. Tory ministers (or ex-ministers like Hancock) walking away from you like that speaks volumes.
My step-dad's father was old and very fragile. He had a fall in early January during the height of the pandemic and had to go to hospital, where he caught COVID and died alone shortly after without his family around. But he was elderly and had underlying health issues, so I guess according to the Tories' logic his death was not important ?
I don't know how you have the stomach for it tbh Owen...you're a stronger person than me...I literally could not bear it listening to some of those pathetic answers. The way they talk about people needing to work put their money and not spend it on drinking and binge.. honestly the utter contempt they have for poor or minimum wage people is astounding
Brilliant reporting …indeed an eye opener
6:16 "Some people manage money poorly" "So you think poor people aren't spending their money properly?" "that's a leading question" - amazing how there are tories at every level of the party that are this disingenuous, and also this bad at hiding it.
Its like He is 'on set' interviewing the Characters from a Monty Python Movie.
I was expected Matt Hancock to start doing 'the John Cleese funny Walk' as He was trying to get away to hide behind a Shrubbery.
So when people magically move to high paying jobs who does the ones they move out of???
“The excess death toll was 150,000”
Tories: “was it though?”
They are probably correct. There's strong evidence that it was vastly under-reported.
Nadine Dorries reaction just to burst into laughter to a serious question is actually terrifying. She clearly has no real idea about the kinds of lives the people that these policies effect are living. Terrifying.
Same response USA Vice President Harris gives when anyone actually manages to corner her....
Corporations should make their own way and pay their fair share of taxes.
Owen you are a star. You've got such guts, style and integrity. The bigoted and ill informed answers by these Tories are staggering.
"Some people can't manage their money well" Ffs. Clearly they're all Daily Mail readers 🙄
If you buy the Daily Mail then frankly you have to much money, toilet paper is cheaper.
People that get paid millions in tax payers money plus having a second job that pay substantial amounts to tell the poor on minimum wage to not depend on benefits when cost of life is beyond and being taxed to the limit !
Would love to know wht relative poverty is poverty is poverty
I wasn't following your channel for the last Tory conference, so this is the first video of yours where I've had to genuinely pause and stare into the middle-distance for a minute partway through just to regain some sanity
"It's NOT the States/Public money,it's YOU'R (Tax) Money"! C'mon People, the Power is in OUR hands and All the Wastage,Mis-appropriation and Corruption Can End IF We band-Together!
the guy that just says "Cheerio" because he has no answer to actual questions and would prefer to go back to his Tory echo chamber...
Brexit means Brexit, but Death doesn't necessarily mean Death.
this country specifically England is screwed
Thanks Owen. :)
I don't understand why the discussion is about the subsidy of employees when it's the employers who are being subsidised.
How can the employers be weaned of their state dependency?
This video is fantastic, Owen, bravo!!
Matt Hancock is such a coward, and a bad mannered one at that - he reminded me of the Holy Grail .. "Sir Matthew ran away/ When danger reared it's ugly head, He bravely turned his tail and fled"
Vile man. That was the low point of this video alongside "It depends how you define death."
Sir Matthew? It was brave brave sir Robin
10:50 - This lady who advocates for £20-25 per hour for workers, but to be enforce by conscience and not law, is totally deluded. Before the National Minimum Wage, "conscience" is what dictated how much workers were paid and it was next to nothing. Totally out of touch lady.
Lady 😆😆😆
If Tories genuinely believe that wealth is generated from hard work, then presumably they would be in favour of a significant increase in inheritance tax 🙂
You can live off £75 a week? Go on, then.
The stick: We're cutting benefits at a time of rampant price inflation
The carrot: We think wages should be higher, but we don't intend to do anything significant legislatively to make that happen.
These videos are absolutely one of my annual highlights. Well done Owen and kudos to those who stopped to talk, no doubt knowing it would be a prickly discussion.
'im alright jack' convention. vampires.
So glad to have met you at the conference! Xx
