Behind The Scenes At Labour Party Conference

  • Keir Starmer won a whopping majority to become Labour leader on a platform of party unity, radical policies, integrity and electability. Has he stuck to his word? How divided is Labour - and how angry are its members at his perceived betrayals? Does Starmer have the confidence of his own members - and does he have an inspiring vision for the country?

      There's something that the "Win at any cost" side of the party fail to see. Over the past 42 years the Right have made gains on oppressing the 99% via wages, Rights, the ruination of education and all mainly via the media.
      We've seen yet more of the country's publicly owned assets sold off to private profiteers that have given us worse service for more money, and the only way this can all be taken back is by radical Socialist policies. Being scared of what Murdoch, et al, will say is pandering to a cabal who's aims will never be even close to decent.
      In summary, Keith Llama is naive, and so are his flock.

      Starmer understands that Britain (specifically England) is traditionally a right wing country. So for Labour to get into power they need to offer something to Tory voters. Starmer can be a leader for everyone, and I wish that the Labour Party and its members would recognise this.

      @@attackpatterndelta8949 I think people are more malleable than that. Electoral politics creates public opinion as much as it reflects it. The idea of British being “naturally” conservative not only ignores human agency, but also completely disregards the fact that opinion polling for the past few years has consistently showed it’s actually so called “left wing” policies that command majority support in the UK. It's interesting the Right often uses phrases and words like "unity" or "appealing to everyone" as synonyms for right-leaning policies.

    The change to the party rules should be of concern to everybody who does believe in democratic decision making. This is bigger than the Labour party. Keir Starman is taking his Labour party back to the old bureacracy which is entrenched in most countires. Very sad. And what about making membership attractive? Clive Lewis referred to Starmer and his cabinet as a Blair tribute band.
      Don’t forget that Blair won 3 elections. Labour Party members seem to have forgotten that they can’t do anything unless they’re in power. It’s not ideal to try and appeal to Tory voters, but that’s what Labour needs to do if they want to get back into government.

    • @playcloudpluspc
      @playcloudpluspc 2 года назад

      @@attackpatterndelta8949 Starmer's trying to do this, the Lib Dems are trying to do this too and they are both failing miserably to improve their fortunes (the Lib Dems have been attempting this for a very long time and it's been a disaster, they were punished rather than rewarded for the coalition with the Tories which is odd if all they need to do is attract Tory voters who one would think would be sympathetic to their role in the coalition). I would agree with you if there was a benefit shown in the polls but there just isn't. The thing is people don't want the status quo anymore, it's not the 90s or the early 2000s and the Tories realise that (although they are disingenuous in their efforts).
      With the huge effects of the climate emergency and rampant and continuously increasing inequality, particularly since the financial crash, the status quo no longer cuts it and Labour don't realise this. I am sceptical that a return to the politics of many years ago will work as it did then when the world has changed so much. This my criticism of many in Labour and of Starmer's approach. I think Biden by contrast has the right idea, he harnessed and included the left and recognises the need for radical change. Now it can be radical centrism but it needs to be radical.
