Behind the Scenes at Tory Conference: Fear and Loathing

  • The Tories under Liz Truss face catastrophe - but sadly, so does the country. I've gone straight to Conservative conference to ask delegates exactly how it's all going. Brace yourselves!
Truss's attempt to slash taxes for the rich caused the markets to collapse, and despite a humiliating u-turn on the 45p rate, the government is still set to cut taxes for big business while hacking away benefits for the struggling. It hasn't gone well - the Tories' polling has collapsed, and they're set, as things stand, for a devastating election defeat. What does the grassroots think about all of this: well, wow, is all I can say...

"Have to look at the rest of the world" is their rebuke and that makes it ok. So if they compare to other countries, the EU has imposed windfall tax on energy companies, so they should do the same here.

No no no. 'Tory' is a state of mind in which the EU no longer exists and can be safely ignored. It's their only option, given that all the lies I've read for over 40 years are now being shown to be just that.
