    What is the slide weight of that pistol?

    • @firydeth
      @firydeth  2 года назад +5

      This is such a great question, I had to get out the punch pin and hammer to find out.
      It is 1 pound, 2.4 ounces / ~522g.
      By comparison, my LH9 slide (which is a 1911 style affair) is only 10.4 ounces / ~295g. The P5 seen in the video is only 10 ounces / ~283g.
      So, the Hi Point slide is almost double the weight of a locked breech type slide.

    Inexpensive guns that most people can swing even on a tight budget. 100% USA made & sourced. The added benefit of that chunky slide is it reduces felt recoil dramatically. The great thing about buying a hi-point is: they have one of the best warranty & customer service departments in the industry. Now they do have room for improvements & if they ever make versions of their guns that accept glock pattern magazines...they will double their sales over night IMHO.

      Yeah, they actually tried to do that with the new Yeet Cannon, which hasn't been released yet. But the way these mags work is so weird, they'd have to completely redesign the gun from the ground up to be able to work with glock mags. So.... sadly no go.

We also purchased two Hi Point 995TS 9mm Carbines for under $300 each in December 2021 (this month). I also put a Hi Point 4595 45 ACP Carbine on layaway this month for $429, new in the box at a pawn shop. We have 5 hunting rifles in 30-06 and .243, but needed some semi-auto guns for our family armory. Still looking for a Hi Point 4095 40 S&W carbine, a 1095 10mm carbine, a ,40 S&W pistol and .45 ACP pistol. We would like it if Hi Point made a .17 HMR Carbine for that 200 yard range.

    This video is interesting because it's both informative (about other guns) and lacking (on some important Hi Point details). There's another similar video where the creator describes how this gun works, and the materials, without the quips, references to "pot metal" (he described exactly the makeup of the alloy), and he must have had a better experience with the C9 than you did because he did not advise that we could expect lots of FTF's, and bad reliability. In fact, there was a detailed overview of why the fixed barrel design results in the gun having good accuracy, and the slide weight reducing felt recoil.

    I personally wouldn't recommend installing a lighter than factory sear spring or polishing the sear. Either could make your HP unsafe.

    • @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena
      @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena 2 года назад

      The worst that could happen is it breaks/dead trigger and you send it in for repairs other than that unless you are messing with the recoil spring nothing could go wrong and there is no way it could become unsafe. Though if it somehow runs away keep it aimed at your target till it runs out of ammo and again the only worry about a runaway would be messing with the recoil spring not the sear spring as a extra power recoil spring could break the sear if it hits hard enough and fast enough turning it into a full auto gun which wears down the breach block fast compromising the seal of the bullet which could blow up the gun. Now how long it would take for the breach to break i don't know could be a month of wearing it down in full auto for all i know.
      Usually if a runaway occurs that means something malfunctioned in the gun and usually it is the recoil spring so replace it and you are good to go. Now it is only illegal if you choose to not take action and remove the faulty part as then you would have a unregistered Machinegun that can blow up on you if you shoot it too much as it was not meant to slam that hard into Zamak 3 and granted it may not actually harm you or kill you but your gun will be inoperable if it actually blows up. And the reason why i say i don't know when it would break is because Hi-Points can take a lot of abuse to break and at other times can break with ease.
      Now i know you are more worried about runaways but you really don't have to be if you have a lighter sear spring in unless using really hot rounds that forces the firing pin past the sear due to the spring due to the spring being light and usually that is just custom reloads or if the bullet is pushed into the case too much

    Nicely done. You have to give HiPoint firearms the credit they are due. They make inexpensive and reliable firearms that literally ANYBODY can afford. Call me crazy but I like the way the C9 looks-it has a genuinely different look and feel. People who own HiPoints, with rare exception, love them. Most of the haters have never even held one, let alone shot one. There is a place for expensive firearms and there is a place for inexpensive ones.

    ZAMAK-3 is not a "low quality" material. It's a less expensive alloy that has great strength, toughness and durability for certain applications. The slide of the C9 doesn't require the stress resistance of steel, but it does require weight for the blowback operation to function, both are achieved with ZAMAK, all at a lower cost. I fully expect my reliable 1998 C9 to last far past my lifetime.

    • @firydeth
      @firydeth  2 года назад +2

      Well, as a casting alloy, Zamak-3 is really good. As a zinc alloy, Zamak-3 is pretty great. However, when counted among all materials, it's on the lower quality side.
      As I mentioned in the video, the main part of the slide that takes all of the abuse is strengthened with a steel insert. You are correct that most of the slide doesn't need to be particularly strong. The Zamak-3 is mostly there to be easily cast, and be heavy. It's great at that, but that doesn't make it high quality either.

    Awesome video. I never knew you had to punch out a roll pin to disassemble the pistols. Just a quick mention… out of battery detonations with pistol calibers are usually not too big of a deal. Especially in unlocked firearms like a blowback pistol… simply put pressure will never get high enough to damage the gun or really hurt the shooter. Usually it’s extracting under pressure and at some point the case will rupture at an unsupported location. Ian from Forgotten Weapons mentions this and even shows video of an out of battery detonation in a sub gun. If you’re interested the video is called “why and how guns explode” or something to that effect. He talks about out of and in battery detonations and specifically Kentucky Ballistic’s .50cal SLAP detonation that destroyed his Serbu and almost killed him. Very interesting.

    Even on cheap blank guns the breech face and the part behind it where the cartridge in the mag rides along it when the slide is pushed back is made out of a steel insert. Zinc will deform easily and it just so happens that a hole is in the breech face. Doh the firing pin hole. After a while, it could deform and not be round anymore, hindering the firing pin/striker moving forward and not igniting the round anymore. On blank guns without a steel breech face that can happen just after a few hundred rounds. Also you can shoot steel case ammo and brass case and so on. Steel cases will destroy a zinc breech face in no time. Cast parts can also be machined in areas where necessary. For example on the slide rails where a bit more exact tolerances have to be kept. So you can see machining marks on cast parts as well.

I often find myself defending them against gun snobs. I have had several in the past and always sold them not because they didn't work, but because I got hard up for money I will get another and keep it. Honestly the new yeet 9mm does nothing for me and I will get the standard c9. They are very underrated usually by those that speak from second hand knowledge rather than personal experience

    Thanks for the video. Hi Points are one of those things, I agree they are interesting in their simplicity and techniques to make a cheap product that works. But watching this and also being fascinated by all of that, it's kind of like watching a biologists dissecting biological waste and finding all of their tidbit facts fascinating, yet fundamentally repulsive in so many ways.
    I think undeservedly, Hi Points have become the macaroni with hot dogs status symbol that proves someone isn't a gun snob, like it gives some connection for someone with dozens of multiple thousand dollar firearms to the lowly street people who can only afford some piece of crap boat anchor, aka Hi Point. They should sell a "my other gun is a C9" sticker so that these people aren't mistakable as a gun snob at the gun range with all their fancy high end firearms. "Nah man, it's cool..it's COOL... I gotta Hi Point too, man. I'm down."
    Me, I'm going to pass on owning a Hi Point. If I ever HAVE TO buy one, I will. But for the sake of earning the "I'm not too good to own a Hi Point" merit badge, I'll pass.

    • @thatguybrody4819
      @thatguybrody4819 3 года назад +7

      especially since most people look at Hi-point like they would Glock or Walther where they are massive corporations with lots of equipment and staff.
      Hi-point has a small werehouse office building with 40 people working in it with limited equipment. with what they have to work with and what they have to put up with (especially since they've had fires and disaster hit them) they are a hell of a lot more than what people give them credit for.

    • @rimfire2642
      @rimfire2642 3 года назад

      @@thatguybrody4819 It seems like you didn't read my entire comment. Maybe, maybe not? It's kind of difficult to read your post, and that you are agreeing with my points, as your post begins with "especially since". It's more like you're passive/aggressive disagreeing. But I digress.
      I disagree that the things you list make Hi Point special in some way. There's many smaller companies that fight and struggle every day, I'm sure much more so than Hi Point.
      Cereal and tools are great analogies to use here. I'll buy off brand cereal, if it's basically the same cereal as the name brand. I don't care about the box or the brand. But if the cereal has hair in it, no thanks. Same with tools, I don't own any Snap-on tool, or MAC tool, I have a lot of nice tools, many expensive. I even own quite a few Harbor Freight tools. But again, I don't own any of Harbor Freights tools that have hair in them.
      So let's look at Hi Point, using the analogies above. Do they sell a product that works? Yes. Is it basically the same thing as a Glock, Walther, Sig, S&W. NO. THEY ARE EXTREMELY FAR FROM THOSE BRANDS. Am I getting basically the same quality as the bigger brands, just at a lower price? NO. THEY ARE EXTREMELY FAR FROM THOSE BRANDS.
      Now, what do I consider much more along the lines of store brand "lucky charms" and Lucky Charms as far as major brands and value? Well, how about Taurus G2/G3 lines? A G3 is much more like a Glock, or Sig, yet still very reasonably priced. And they aren't like junky clunky tonner Hi Points at all, except that like Hi Points, normally a bullet comes out the end of the barrel when you pull the trigger.

    • @thatguybrody4819
      @thatguybrody4819 3 года назад +6

      @@rimfire2642 i'm not comparing Hi-Point to Glock or Sig. i'm saying people often hold Hi-Point to those standards when reviewing it and that's kind of stupid. it's a 2-300 dollar gun not a 600+ dollar gun. when looking for a beginner car would you compare how good the old honda is to a Mercedes or a BMW? no. you compare it to other cars in that price range.
      they get out guns that work really well for how cheaply they have to make them and the materials used.

    • @rimfire2642
      @rimfire2642 3 года назад

      @@thatguybrody4819 This is where it's actually your head that doesn't make sense. Look, could any of the gun manufacturers make their version of a Hi Point and sell it for $200? YES, THEY ALL COULD. The fact that Hi Point makes a functional product and sells it cheaply BECAUSE IT IS CHEAP, HEAVY, BASICALLY UNUSABLE AS CONCEALED CARRY, PIECE OF CRAP ETC. ETC., doesn't mean they're something special about them. Crap doesn't cost a whole lot to make, even if it functionally serves the purpose of crap, being brown and smelly..
      If Hi Point WERE MAKING SOMETHING COMPARABLE TO $600 guns and selling at $200 THEN THEY WOULD BE SOMETHING SPECIAL. Again, I would give my hats off to Taurus much more so than Hi Point, as their inexpensive G2/G3 lines were/are functionally similar to $600 guns.
      Again, cereal analogy. I'm not getting "lucky charms" with Hi Point. I'm getting cereal made out of cardboard, saw dust, and left over oats. It's cheap because it's CHEAP. Yeah, I can..well.. YOU CAN eat that cereal all you want and say "well it's cereal". And yes, maybe my store brand cereal cost a little more than hi point cereal, but it's also as good as the name brand Lucky Charms while costing significantly less.

    • @thatguybrody4819
      @thatguybrody4819 3 года назад +5

      @@rimfire2642 it's cheap. it's made of crappy materials. it's heavy. yes will give you that. but unusable and piece of crap is where i call bull. basically unusable as concealed carry is also bull because there are videos on how to do it and sometimes it's all people have so they have to. it's definitely usable you just have to work with it and practice. piece of crap, now i can say that SCCY and (maybe?) Kel-Tec deserve that more than Hi-Point. plus you find _Plenty_of people saying Taurus is a crappy. there are things Hi-point does that big companies should excel at like decent customer service (which Hi-Point is known for being one of if not the best). Hi-Point cares about it's firearms and the people who buy them unlike some bigger companies.
      and the cerial comparison i'd say it's like comparing rice crispies. offbrand and onbrand both taste mostly the same, but one has better box art and namebrand superiority. Hi-Point is a gun that looks and feels cheap but still works basically as good as the other guns that add on ergonomics and nick-nacks to make it look pretty.
