Cool video! I've been toying with the idea of upgrading a SFF PC for gaming. Any particular reason you didn't upgrade the fans (other than to save money)? There's only 2 in most of those SFFs (CPU Cooler and 80mm fan at the front of the case). The stock case fan is often not awful, but the additional heat from the GTX1650 would likely not help its cause. We also all know the stock Intel CPU coolers aren't great and there are quite a few LP coolers that would fit this build for not a lot more money (probably like $70 if you went with Noctua fan and cooler).
hey man try doing this on this pc if you still have it around or someting silmer theirs a program from gary gibson and its called inspectre. if you disable inspectre and meldown and restart the pc you will get more performance out your cpu that way. because the inspectre updates are affecting performance on the older i5's and i7's plus xeons give it a shot im sure youll get a performance increase. www.grc.com/inspectre.htm

I absolutely love the idea, and the result is great when you look at it from a distance, but I have some advice for you and my fellow modders that want to try this out : - The case seems badly cut in some parts, don't use a dremel to cut long straight lines, the cuts won't be straight and won't be clean - Depending on the paint that is already applied to the case, sand the whole case with fine grain sandpaper before applying paint, the result will be neater - If you use a rattle can or an airbrush, apply at least two or three light coats instead of applying one massive coat in one pass, it will prevent the paint from dripping and stacking at random places. - You really should apply varnish (matte or gloss) on your paint job in order to prevent it from falling appart (as we can see on some parts of your case) Once again, the idea is great and I thank you a lot for the time you took to create and share this content
Thanks for taking the time to write some feedback, but alternatives would have been more constructive! 1. What tool do you recommend cutting metal and acrylic for straight lines? 2. Is there anything that wasn't neat about the case? I agree that your idea is probably more META, but would there be a tangible difference when looking at it? 3. I did this exactly, I applied 5-6 small coats and not just 1 large one 4. What was falling apart? Thanks again
@@ZachsTechTurf thanks for your quick answer. First of all, I'm really sorry if I my advice might have appeared rude, I'm not speaking in my mother tongue. 1. Using a circular saw and a guideline or a table saw would greatly help. I know that most of the people dont have access to such tools, but hardware stores often offer cutting services. If really you have no access to such tools, you could also mount the window on the outter side of the panel and paint its border black to hide the places you fixed it on the panel (beware, the window has to match the size of the panel in this instance). 2 & 3. Some cases (most frequently older models) come with a "granulated" and "rough" paint job. Depending on the angles of your camera, I could see some elevations and irregularities and I assumed that they were caused by either those already existing irregularities or a single coat of paint which dripped a bit. That's why I think that sanding the parts that you want to paint is better. I forgot to mention in the advice that I gave for the coats that you'd have to let each coat dry before applying another one (but you must have done that 👌) 4. Mostly on the edges of the cut side panel, were the window meets the panel's metal frame, we can see "black" spots were there is not paint. I can't illustrate my words with pictures and I might have made a mistake, but after watching closely the bottom right of the window when you face the "window side" of the PC, I think I see spots of missing paint.
The GDDR6 version needs a higher power tolerance and an external plug which some OEMs don't come with. The GDDR5 card can be powered purely through the PCI, so that's likely why it was recommended.

I just transferred my HP Elitedesk 800 G1 to an old HP Pavilion case, added a gtx 1650 and I'm playing Forespoken right now. Extra things I had to do: 1.) Remove the power switch and lights from the front cover button, insert into the from cover of the Pavilion. 2.) To use my Elite desk cooling fan, I had to find some nuts that fit on the bolts in the fan too attach it to the mother board. The Elit desk mother does not have built in nuts. The fan bolts into the case. It ain't pretty but works like a champ.

This looks like a cool way to get a gaming pc on the cheap. I dont think it's a good way to 'flip' a pc and make money from selling it however. Lets say it takes 30 minutes to find the PC on the internet and examine it to make sure it is suitable for flipping. Add an extra 3 hours for modding the PC (which is not alot of time considering you have to measure, cut, paint, dry..., 30 minutes checking to make sure it runs well after the fact. That's 4 hours of work...if you work quick. If you choose to benchmark the PC so that the buyer knows what they are getting, you can probably add another 2 hours for that. That's 6 hours of work. Then its time to put it online and wait for it to sell, which might take days or months, from which it will probably cost like $10 in shipping (assume you also get materials to put the PC in so it dosent break in shipping). The time it takes to bring it to the post office will probably add another like 30 minutes. Total time spent: 6 hours 30 minutes. At the end of the day, I dont think you will sell it for over $400 (maybe...I might be wrong), considering the type of people buying your computer will likely be tech savvy enough to recognise that they can just buy their own EliteDesk and slap a 1650 in it, or they wont know enough about it PCs that they just buy a prebuilt from walmart or something. If it costs you $310 in materials (incl shipping)(if you find a good deal), you are making a profit of $90. Over 6 and a half hours, thats $14/hr. Which might sound good, until you realise that its below the national average for teenagers at $17/hr, and you have to factor in not only the cost of doing the mods in the first place (equipment costs, hidden fees for selling, etc), but the associated risk of potentially not selling your PC for months or at all. it is likely you will break something while modding, which will also cost you. All in all, this is high risk, high skill, low return. But its good fun if you are just building the PC for yourself tho :)

I got a HP elitedesk 800 G2 for 95$AUD with a intel core i5-6500 8GB of DDR4 RAM and a 200W 80+ platinum rated PSU, I’m currently slightly modifying a HP pavilion 500 PC series(i7 model, other than that I can’t find the specific model number, so far) to fit the power button from my other pc. I’m waiting on a new cooler that just clips in(the bracket basically disappeared)
Just to clarify, since he is recording the FPS will drop. Even the GTX 1050 ti does good in modern games when not recording! Therefore the GTX 1650 is a good card for modern games, Recording causes lag and FPS drops. So the benchmarks are not accurate!
I have the same PC set up, but when I upgraded the GPU, I couldnt find the GTX 1650 at the time, and went with the AMD Radeon RX 6400 instead which works well for the games I play. Many of the games I play run well in 1080P but instead of the I5, I've upgraded to the I7-6700.
It was funny that while changing colors for the main pc it was also affecting the pc behind it. I have that same issue with my RGB in my different pc and the lights of the tv and so on LOL
A better idea for side panel is to do a light box style sliding picture frame that you can change out. Lot's of cool backlit picture ideas....Even a very nice picture of high end liquid cooled pc parts.
Yo Zach, I like the new format but if I can add, I believe the camera is maybe too big? I mean it occupies a lot of space on the screen, also, the microphone on the way just looks really odd. Besides that I would like to see it more often, actual live gameplay. Also you're recording so that obviously takes a few FPS but I think that the PC looks sick!
That original HP horizontal PC is exactly the model that the school uses in the libraries and the classrooms. I might ask to keep ones that they don't need and do this?
I bought this PC for $150 with Windows 10 Pro and a 1tb HDD, did a complete transplant into a $50 DeepCool tempered glass case with a ROG OC GTX 1060 setup. All together with a 600 watt psu, 16gb of ram, SSD to run windows and other parts, came out to $550 total and runs games like Witcher 3 on ultra without a sweat. This is a great platform for new PC gamers if you are ok with building your own PC from scratch. The only shortcoming is the CPU fan design on HP's motherboard which is proprietary (aftermarket CPU coolers wont work)...that being said, my CPU temps stay below 67 celcius so....does it matter?
Great mod, only things i wouldnt do are the window, paintjob and leds, because those dont add functionality. I would instead spend that money on a noctua fan on the cpu cooler.
Great vid, project and basic info on casemodding. The new benchmarking style... eeeehhh... I don't hate it, but it streched a bit long, so I started skipping 5 secs at the, only to stumble on voice-over commentary. If tightened up a bit, that be good. :) And perhaps blur it when doing voice-over or some other visual indicator, it'd be great. Though that is just a personal preference of mine, so not a definite request. Keep up the good work :)
@@ZachsTechTurf You're most welcome. Heck, you are showing us the basics of building budget, what to keep in mind and what to watch out for. And then you benchmark the machines as well. I really wanted to the same plexiglass window on my old Lenono M71e tower, but it has that spiffy Lenovo indetation on it, which I don't really want to remove or break. And the all Black lenovo is a classic of it's own. Though I have had thoughts of "Racing Stripes" or white with blue, green and/or red accents. Black and orange is also on the table, since I am gonna order some Orange G.Skill Ares DDR3 RAM and a Inter-Tech Argus SU-200 CPU tower cooler. With a blue AMD Radeon Pro WX2100 to contrast that. xD Plus... I can then downgrade it back to the original PSU, rather than the TermalTake 630W, that I am using, to make it run an old HD7770 xD.
A few things I'd note. - Not every mini system like this has extra SATA power cables, they sometimes have exactly enough for the included drives. - That side panel is cool, but needs a ton of work to look good. It looks like you basically cut it out with scissors. You sanded it but it really doesn't look very good or straight. I think I'd be embarrassed to flip it in that state.
I modded one of these and kept the cpu and ram and psu then added a gt 1030 and a 2tb ssd and turned out pretty clean :) (edit) i think it would look nice with light gray instead of white

Bought the exact same PC from a recycler a couple of years ago and put in more RAM and a SSD. Unfortunately it was during the great Graphics card drought of COVID and the only card I could get was a GT1030 - I could not find a 1650 anywhere and the ones being sold on ebay used were at ridiculous prices - so unfortunately no 1080p gaming for me - but I'm eventually going get a 10th gen i3 from work when they swap a desktop over - and this can become a media PC as it can handle 4K playback with no issue.
Great looking build. I'm working on a similar build right now. If you have time, coloring or shrouding the PSU and making a cover for the hard drive bays can make the build look a little cleaner. If not, you can just use a heat gun to remove the PSU's sticker and leave it at that if you don't want to paint it.
@@ZachsTechTurf Yo so happy you replied bro. I also started to have random restarts like when I load up any game. I'm going to do all the steps you did
Those edges look rough. Wondering what good options there could be to cover those wonky cut lines. Maybe some PVC white trim could do the trick. But then again did not even realize that was the original case at the start.
Kool mod Zach !!! maybe if you speak about the 1030 maybe highlight the fact that they need too buy the gddr5 not the gddr4 which is really a piece of rubbish.

Yep, thanks for that! I will definitely do that on the next one.
Nice build i recently bought a lga 775 hp compaq 8200 elite for an amazing £6 inclu free postage which i plan to flip i got it working after some troubleshooting and upgraded the CPU to the core 2 quad 8400 and some decent 8gb kit of ddr3 ramp plan to slot in a decent low profile gpu something like the amd Radeon pro wx 2100 shes good as new in the inside but still all beat up on the outside i plan to mod the case allbeit wont do as extensive modding as you did as i dont have access to a Dremel and resources to keep my self save plus i would like to apply the common programming practice of keeping it simple stupid although i do plan to vynill wrap the case and spray paint the front fascia maybe put some rgb at the front as well stuff which is easy todo and should make it look awesome
5:13 rocking linus style with the sandals an socks ..... noice !
Noooo there's a difference between what Linus does and wearing high Nike socks and Jordan slides.
you could also go with the low profile yeston rx 550 4gb you can snag it for $80 new on ebay and it outperforms the 1030 by far.
5:54 those jordan sllipers fire
3:50 you was changing the color led pc In the background to 😂
Hoping no one would notice lol.
Zach's Tech Turf welp I did 😂 i don’t know why I just randomly noticed
Yeah, nice cutting you have there, edges as smooth as silk
Double kill on bots, an achievement to be proud of!
Lmao I agree!
I dig it man! Looks good!
Thank you!
This will be my starter pc maybe
Let me know how it goes!
Many of the games I play run well in 1080P but instead of the I5, I've upgraded to the I7-6700.
shout out from the philippines 🔥🔥🔥 awesome video 👌
Thanks for watching!
i acctaully love watching ur vids zach
Glad to hear it, thanks!
i dont know why but i love seeing old hardware pushed to its limits
It was funny that while changing colors for the main pc it was also affecting the pc behind it. I have that same issue with my RGB in my different pc and the lights of the tv and so on LOL
Lmao yep it can get a little annoying :)
the benchmarking is pretty dope
Great job. Looks like a more expensive build.
Thanks!
Remember the days when you could buy a gpu for msrp
Ikr? 1650 for under 160usd?! Now on amazon it's 500usd
i got that same hp pc and knowing it only costs $300 to upgrade it is gonna help me out alot
Great video loved the benchmarking
Glad to hea rit, thanks!
A better idea for side panel is to do a light box style sliding picture frame that you can change out. Lot's of cool backlit picture ideas....Even a very nice picture of high end liquid cooled pc parts.
You should leave the average fps some where in a corner on screen while your still showing the benchmarking runs, instead of taking it off completely!
5:46 Zach did you paint over the sticker !?🤣
Yo Zach, I like the new format but if I can add, I believe the camera is maybe too big? I mean it occupies a lot of space on the screen, also, the microphone on the way just looks really odd. Besides that I would like to see it more often, actual live gameplay. Also you're recording so that obviously takes a few FPS but I think that the PC looks sick!
Thanks for the suggestions! If you do wanna see me live though head here: twitch.tv/zachstechturf
That original HP horizontal PC is exactly the model that the school uses in the libraries and the classrooms. I might ask to keep ones that they don't need and do this?
Hi Zach, keep up the good vids. Also, that darker green fan in that background PC though.
It's not going anywhere :)
I liked the new benchmark style
That thing looks pretty dope.
And perhaps blur it when doing voice-over or some other visual indicator, it'd be great. Though that is just a personal preference of mine, so not a definite request.
Keep up the good work :)
Thank you very much for the feedback, this is the exact kind of stuff I like to hear.
@@ZachsTechTurf
You're most welcome.
With a blue AMD Radeon Pro WX2100 to contrast that. xD
Plus... I can then downgrade it back to the original PSU, rather than the TermalTake 630W, that I am using, to make it run an old HD7770 xD.
@@ZachsTechTurf So.... thank you for your hard work and inspiration :)
Definitely liked the way of benchmarking sir please sit down
La voy hacer así gracias😂
I modded one of these and kept the cpu and ram and psu then added a gt 1030 and a 2tb ssd and turned out pretty clean :) (edit) i think it would look nice with light gray instead of white
When he killed that Player in CS:GO and said Thank you. 😅😂🤣 that did it for me lol
This is amazing, thank you so much I just bought my sister one of these and I was wondering how I was gonna upgrade it , you made my mind up thank you
I do think 4C/4T CPUs really struggle now a days. Games are becoming much better at utilising more cores and threads now
No I don't think it "really struggles" these days. You can still play 1080p games with a proper 4c/4t
Great Mod Zach!! Seriously man looks so dope!!!
Killed it. Great job
Thank you very much Tim!
Just love the video. The only thing that i can't stand is the safety advice on short pants
Whoa that came out great!
You should totally attempt a core 2 series gaming pc build
I tucking admire u u are so humble. Do u have a patreon. I love u for making vids u seem so friendly. I want to give u all the money in the world love ya
I appreciate your viewership. The best way to help financially is over on Twitch, there's multiple ways to give including straight donations, subscriptions, gifted subs, bits, etc etc
This reminds me of my old pc :( had i5 3750 lol but I upgraded to a r5 2600 which im happy with 21st century tech lol
Flashbacks.
@@ZachsTechTurf Yo so happy you replied bro. I also started to have random restarts like when I load up any game. I'm going to do all the steps you did
I got the prodesk version and I’m planning to upgrade the graphics card and Memory. I love this build and if I could would replicate it myself
That is why Zach is the best
I copied him and got a good result but I changed the GTX 1650 for the RX 550 and I didn't put an SSD
thank you for that tip. my pc sff has now gt 1030 silent and imma mod the case. next gpu choice is 1650ti lp
Those edges look rough. Wondering what good options there could be to cover those wonky cut lines. Maybe some PVC white trim could do the trick. But then again did not even realize that was the original case at the start.
Kool mod Zach !!! maybe if you speak about the 1030 maybe highlight the fact that they need too buy the gddr5 not the gddr4 which is really a piece of rubbish.
this video is so awesome and entertaining your so cool Zach!!!!
i thought i was the only crazy person to do this, i swapped the case (to be able to fit a graphics card) for a big old school one with a handle and i used green black and gray for the color (im running with 2 power supplys) since the connector is different for the sff
oh and mine came with only 320gb HDD but with a I5 4690 up to 3.9ghz cpu
A other awsome video and i like the new way you test out games keep doing that way
Thanks for the feedback!
0:59 I prefer using commands for free activation, but thanks
while he was changing the led colors you could see the pc in the back changing too
