yeah, its likely a pc that someone bought for an office, never did any real maintenance and it ended up running very poorly due to old thermal paste, not using ssd's, bad ram, and was deemed unworthy
Zach I'm honestly grateful for your videos because I was able to score a silicon power 1tb nvme ssd I've seen you use in a build for just 37 bucks. Its crazy because the price is around 60 bucks last time I checked from the exact same ssd from amazon nowadays.
On most of the Optiplex models I have worked with you can JUST fit in a 80mm fan to intake in the front (i super glue them in but you could probably use a drill to screw it in). Makes A LOT of difference on temps.
My brother gifted me an old office PC his work was going to throw out a while back and I've been procrastinating on but his gave me a good idea of what to do with it, thanks for the inspiration.
I love this youtuber because he is actually a low baller and i still do the same thing and its so enjoyable to look at his videos because i can relate keep the good work up 👍
so long ago i use his old OEM build of the hp elite desk gen 2 to this day almost 3 years later im sitll running the ddr3 1050 TI SFF and the i5 6500 so yeah do i get no more then 70 fps in all games in low yes but i couldnt be more happy so thanks zach
Ironically, just yesterday I bought a Dell Optiplex with latch on the side, with the intent of making an ultra low budget gaming pc. This video helped a bunch, so cheers mate 👍
You can eliminate the thermal throttling by controlling the fan speed manually by running the fan on 100% speed and removing the lid and that plastic cover.
PCs like these could be a great sleeper build, the Dell Optiplex looks good, maybe you could try improving the airflow by drilling holes into the case and replace the CPU cooler with something like a stock Intel cooler from Facebook marketplace or eBay.
I was peeping the internals and noticed that the top PCI-E slot was shorter, which yeah means less lanes and a bit of a performance drop, BUT it had a cut in it meaning it could probably take in a longer tongue. Meaning your gpu options could possibly fight that lane cut since you'd be able to do double slot LP GPUs. Maybe, though. Not entirely sure.
I have been looking for Thingstation p330 as a second pc since it still does fine plus have an 8700t (upgradable to a 9900t) and being paired with a low profile rx 560 for a solid light machine
Definitely try to go for a mid tower used pc if you can find it. The limitations on sff builds really kill any performance per dollar. If you can manage to find a 6th gen or later i7, you can pair it with a rx 5700xt for around 150 bucks, the same cost as the 6400.
New i7 8700 builds when new would have more than likely been paired with 1070 or 1080 GPUs. In my opinion an 8700 and 1080 is still a completely usable gaming platform. My play with an Optiplex like that is to find a similar vintage gaming rig real cheap, and swap the i3 or i5 then sell the Optiplex for what I paid for it (normally under $100), and the value of the gaming PC goes way up. In your case, it isn't a bad setup even with the GPU limitations and cooling issues, turned out pretty solid.
The correct move here is to keep only the processor and build the system around it with second hand components from marketplace/ ebay and a few cheap components
What you didn't include in the video however is that the best performance upgrade this PC can get (And got as shown in Diablo) is the RTX A2000 which technically performs like an RTX 2060. Great card but hard to find and usually pricey. Awesome find and great video. I can only wish one day I can learn to do quality editing like you. Cheers.
That PCIE x4 slot will take a double width gpu. You do lose a bit, but likely similar as using gen 4 card in gen 3 slot. A gtx 1650 would pair well or rtx 3050 lp
Does the PSU come with any PCI-E cables? If it does I would've tried to mod the case and use a PCI-E riser cable on top of the PSU. Add a intake fan in the front. Replaced the stock cooler and add extra ventilation holes in the top over the CPU socket. This modded case looks way to good not o try to max out this PC.
I'm currently specing out a sim racing set up for F124, Beamng, and Assetto Corsa. Could you build an around $1000 PC for the best performance on those games that you can get for that budget?
I have a sapphire nitro+ rx580 8gb laying around and I'd like build a pc with it. However, I'm planning to upgrade to a new and far batter gpu in the future. So what specs should i go for??
i have a pc that has the same cpu as yours but its a tower pc its a hp z2 g4 and i bought the best psu i could which is 650watts what gpu would you reccomend
zach!! please i need help, is an RTX 4060 Dual and a 5 7600x a good combo? for Christmas im looking to upgrade from a 5 5500 to the 5 7600x and snag a quick 240 aio
Definitely try to avoid Optiplex small form factor PCS. If you can find an EliteDesk instead, they actually put the PCIe slot in a sane place. I built my EliteDesk g2 up with a 3050 6gb lp and it's running great after I cut a hole in the side for GPU cooling and added some tiny 40mm exhaust fans lmao
Don’t forget to activate Windows on ALL of your gaming PCS! (Use Code ZTT18 to save 25%!)

Can you update me on your progress?
Arc A380 is sold as a dual slot card. ETA Prime built one as a single slot using the coler from an A310.
This video is well timed!
Literally just sniped an i7 8700k
for £42 ($53.44) earlier this week

I build scale models like planes and shit, I might do a build somewhat like this so the painting part will be cool as I have an airbrush
I have been looking for Thingstation p330 as a second pc since it still does fine plus have an 8700t (upgradable to a 9900t) and being paired with a low profile rx 560 for a solid light machine
Even if nothing else was salvageable, I would be super happy to get a free high end CPU like that one.
Should put the sleeper build in the AOpen KF45A case

I wanted to ask what would you reccomend for a pure performance pc build with a budget around 800-1000euros
If we want we can change the casing and install some proper cooling for better performance right???

not sure if intel arc cards are even an option for these older office PCs. They need REBAR support from motherboard I thought?
