      Yea but these days most companies know how to liquidate without a price drop. Say like Nvidia and their in-genius way to sell old hardware last year. From 1998-2006, I'd literally sell my rig right before new product launch to retain value. Then just build a new one and just wait 2-months for launch. I haven't been able to that in a decade+.

    HP ProDesk, nice! That is my daily driver, with an i7-4770, 16GB RAM and upgraded to a SSD. Great top with cutting up the cooler backplate to secure the HP heatsink. On my machine ESC accesses a general menu from which you can then select boot menu, BIOS and other options.

    I always love the OEM hustle videos. You get the rigs for a great price, make a few bucks, save a pc from the landfill, and clue us into what systems work best for gaming. For instance I had no idea that Sandy Bridge era HP rigs had trouble with newer graphics cards.

      how new of cards and what rigs? i have an HP 8300 board with a 2550K and RX480 8GB. technically its an Ivy Bridge mobo (q77) so maybe thats the difference? i can play new games like Warzone and The Outer Worlds that are reasonably demanding on 1080 max and stay at 60 locked. RX480 is overclocked to just under 1400.

    • @eclipsegst9419
      @eclipsegst9419 4 года назад +1

      yes thats what i used. well, mine was for an 8300 but basically the same thing. i later realized that all it does thats special is up the 5V standby ATX uses to HP 12V standby. so you could just wire it up yourself from the old plugs and a tiny board with a stepper if you know basic electronics and soldering. and this applies to any proprietary psu. most all have the needed 12v, neg12v, 5v, and 3.3v. some are multirail so in that case you want to make sure your cpu and gpu are on different rails.

  • @WouterVerbruggen
    @WouterVerbruggen 5 лет назад +78

    11:47 That has to be a problem on the power meter's side. It's electrically impossible for the PSU to effect a (wall socket side) power meter in such a way and still work normally. From the PSU's perspective, the power meter doesn't exist

    • @nahventure3873
      @nahventure3873 4 года назад +1

      Might be using ground as a neutral and/or has the HOT and NEUTRAL inverted. Therefore bypassing entirely the power meters method. With no ground, it shouldn't work at all or it should actually measure the usage. more than likely the hot is inverted though.

I got an HP EliteDesk 800 (almost the same one in the video) though it's a standard Micro ATX size (still figuring out and hoping it fits standard MATX boards inside) with a 4590 and 8GB RAM. Threw in a PNY 120GB SSD and an RX 460 and it's running well so far.
      What I'd like to do is get an LGA 1150 board that's MATX and transplant the CPU, RAM and GPU to the new board, and then fit it in the case with a new PSU.

    I just finished with a build close to this. I was on the fence about buying another XBox/Playstation anything. I started out with an HP Desk Pro 600 G1 SFF that I had for a couple years and it worked well as a surfer/streamer and a crummy Music Work Station. The first thing I did was swap the HD for a Samsung 850 Evo SSD at $90, a whole world of difference. I swapped out mem and replaced with 32 gigs of crucial 1600mhz DDR3 that I got for $75 on Ebay and put a GTX1060 in it I also found on EBay for $150. I couldn't close the case after that and I had to get a second PSU, jump the power to ground on the ATX connector to provide power for the GPU because there was no 6pin PCI power on the HP and at 260 watts I doubted it's ability to power the GPU. I also got a Sound Blaster XAE5 cause I make music on this thing too. World of Warcrafts played great at all resolutions, and then I started looking into other games. I noticed that CPU and GPU were maxed out while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 3. And then the 1060 died at the same time the cheap PSU I bought for $30 fried, probably related, sad. So I got a Corsair 850Watt PSU NEW realizing what I would have to do in the future. I replaced the GPU with a GTX 1660 TI new from Micro Center $300. GPU utilization dropped but CPU was still maxed. I replaced the I5 4560 with an I7 4790K also from Ebay for $250 from China but had to turn turbo off in bios due to over heating and current throttling (always make sure you are running the latest BIOS version). At that point I realized that the motherboard was the bottleneck and simply not sophisticated enough to provide stable power and thermal management for the new CPU. So I bought an MSI Gaming 5 on Ebay for $150, it took almost a month to arrive from China but worth the wait. I then purchased a Corsair Chrystal 460 case cause NEW I was tired of the Pi look. A Corsair H100i $130 and a Corsair Commander Pro for $70 at Micro Center cause I like my lights to sync. And a Crucial 1TB NVME M.2 I think it was around $100. I de-lided the 4790k and Conductonaut under the IHS and Kryonaut on top. And another 32 Gigs of mem only Hyper X Fury at 1860mhz ebay, about $200. Now everything runs great! CPU overclocked to 4.6Ghz and stable with temps never above 62c. I tried some overclocking on the 1660 TI and saw some really outstanding benchmarks but found things ran a great deal smoother without overclocking when actually playing games. (I wanna' get a 2080 super maybe). I also de-lidded/Condutonauted the 4560, put it back in the HP, left the Crucial mem in and the 850 Evo put the lid back on the case and gave it to my wife who works from home and had another HP but older with an Athalon (YUCK!!!). so in short, this can work but you will find that the MB and PSU of the original HP will be sorely lacking in performance, management and features. It's kind of like putting a super charger on a Ford Pinto. And don't be afraid to buy cheap stuff from China, it's worked out great for me. Oh and one more thing, those USB 3.0s on the HP you know the blue ones, aren't. They are "USB 3.0 Supported" in HPs world that's the same, it's not. They will recognize USB 3.0 devices but will only 'speak' in legacy USB. So NO VR support with the HP board. It was the purchase of an Oculus Rift S that made me buy the MSI motherboard. I did this over the span of about 9 months so the cost was very stretched out and manageable.

    The Boot menu key is F9

    Love the design of the case.

I think 3D printing offers a lot to the PC community, especially the used parts community that might be pairing gear from different machines and generations. Considering the low cost of 3D printers and the relative ease of designing functional parts, I'm surprised it isn't used more frequently.

    I did this with a Prodesk 600G1 (i5 4590) a couple of years ago. I used an HP server adapter to change the 6-Pin and 3 Pin PSU plugs to a 24-pin which allowed me to put in a 500W PSU and a GTX760 (which I recently upgraded to a 1060 when I put a 1080Ti in my Main build). I did have to change the order of the 3 pin on the adapter to match the config of the 3 pin that came from the original PSU, but that was simple enough, just poked the headers through the plastic housing of the connector, and pushed them back in the correct order for the PC.
    I also used a Low profile USB3 adapter to solve the GPU overhang problem. These HP pc's are great value for money now days! The only issue with using a custom PSU is that you have to press F1 every time you boot it because it can't detect the PSU fan. But everything works perfectly! I recommend it!

    Bryan, you can find a proprietary PSU cable adapter on eBay and that way use any PSU on an OEM HP system, try searching for (24pin to 6pin hp OEM) should come up, I've used it before and it does the job, though it looks sketchy and I would not recommend going over 500W with that adapter cable.

      I actually have the adapter with my elitedesk 800 g2 mini system as i move all the parts to a new case and bought a new psu and a rx580. It works but i need to change the pinout for the 6pin cable because there are different pinouts for different hp motherboard. Wouldn't recommend going over 500 watts....? The adapter doesn't really care how big your power supply is or what GPU is connected. With the OEM dell optiplex computers they need a adapter similar to this and all it does is converts the 5volts standby power to 12volts.

      In a lot of cases, you don't even need to change anything because most is still the same. An Acer I just reused the case on, the front panel is one connector, but it lines up perfectly and i didn't have to rewire anything, just plugged the whole cable in and everything was fine.

    I did something similar a while back. I bought an older optiplex with an i7 4770 non k, 16gb ddr3, 500 gb hdd, and a 500w 80+ EVGA PSU for $60 US. I then went to Walmart and bought a WD 500gb SSD, took it home, opened up the housing for the SSD, took out the actual SSD, and put the housing in the package and took it back. Then I found a “defective” RX 480 8gb for $40 on eBay. The seller stated that the card over heated after opening a game, so once I got it I repasted it, and cleaned it, and it ran perfect. I bought a cheap case off Newegg, and with a couple rudimentary modifications I got it all working together. So I ended up with the following. i7- 4770, RX 480 8Gb, 16 Gb ddr3 1333 MHz, 500 GB sata ssd, w/ 500 gb HDD, 500w 80+ psu, and a decent looking case for around $130. (p.s. don’t tell Walmart)

All the components were used or 'open box' items and I've got about $350 USD in the whole system (minus the TV) Oh... and I forgot to mention, all this is being run on the original proprietary 280 watt PSU! Very fast, very stable system with no hick-ups or problems yet for about a year now.

    Brian, got some knowledge to share. Most HP business computers do support newer nvidia graphics cards.
    HP 4000/6000/8000 series are good for cheap gaming builds. If you have issues just update bios to latest version.
    3000 series are not really businessmodels, they are closer to HP's consumerlineup. No bios updates.
    Newer models work fine too. HP 400/600/800 series.
    Speaking from experience, I've put together many 6000/8000 series HP computers with nvidia GPU's. GTX 750/750ti/950/960/1030/1050/1050ti/1060 3gb.
    Just update the bios before. I'm currently typing this on a HP Elite 8000 SFF, Q9450,16GB, GT 1030 low profile.
    HP's consumer computers with clarksdale/lynnfield/sandy/ivy bridge are a nightmare. MSI has AMD r9 200 series with bios switch for legacy. Sapphire nitro has it on both 200 and 300 series.

This was perfect. I put it all together with a new 500w power supply and bought some cable converters and power extensions then got a gt 710. I know I know, back then I was new to pc gaming and PC's in general and didn't know any better. Two months later fan started making noise. Not recoil whine, not scratching, but a clicking noise. I removed the fan but that just broke the fan and now it was useless. Last Christmas I got a gigabyte gtx 1050ti oc edition and with enough power knew this was gonna be pog. And ever since I've been playing modern games at 60 fps on high settings not needing to worry about fan breaking. Noise level went down due to gigabyte 1050ti fan being really quite. And now with i5 4570 and 16 gb of ram. I'm loving pc gaming.

    To get around your watt reading issue. Buy a clamp meter of some description. Then you need and extension lead with either the active or neutral apart from each other. Rough way use tape, or not so rough use heat shrink. That will give you the current. Then is just ohms law from there. So Australia is approx 240 volts. W=VxIxPF, assuming PF is close enough to 1, you should have about 1 amp max on you clamp meter. 240 x 1 x1 =240watts.

    Very nice work. Congratulations. I also think that a low budget pc can be a great gift for your friends or familly. Really like working on those old PCs:)

    I'm slow-motion building the same system, more or less. I have the HP Z210 motherboard with a Xeon E3-1270 CPU, which handily beats out the I7-2600. You can find cheap ECC ram for this board and easily load it up to 16GB on all four Ram slots for $20 U.S. You have to buy a 24 to 18 pin power supply adapter to make this motherboard work with a standard PSU. I'm using a 450 Watt Seasonic that from another system. Also, for CPU coolers, you can essentially make any modern cooler work by using #8-32 screws and nuts. Use plastic washers on the back for electrical insulation. If you're handy, you hardware stores have plenty of metal brackets and braces you can hack up for custom fitment. Anyway, I've was able to mount a Corsair AIO water cooler and an old, but amazing, OCZ heat-pipe cooler. I used the air cooler for bench testing but the final case-build will use the water cooler. This is to replace my kid's old AMD FX6300 gaming system, which is bottlenecking a Radeon RX-570.

    Thank you for this video, I've seen plenty of these HP system for sale. Now I think it's a win if you could bargain some. You can build a gaming PC + you get a body and a power supply to build some office mini-ITX

    I’m just doing one of these builds, you can buy an adapter to use a standard power supply for around $15 USD.

    Using H.P. or Dell proprietary components is not worth it. It's a major hassle and expandability is severely limited. I use a H.P. 220z 3rd gen Intel based machine for a HTPC. I left it in it's original case and simply installed a half height video card, SSD for boot, and high capacity mechanical drive for media storage. Works like a champ. Cost a hundred bucks for the workstation, plus the cost for graphics card and drives. It will only accept half height graphics cards but if you wanted to use it for light gaming you can get half height 1050 ti cards which would be ok for 1080p gaming and not too power hungry for the 260 watt psu. Moral of the story.............don't waste your time transplanting proprietary components into a modern case just so you can have flashing led lights. It's not worth the effort, the cost, or the headaches involved.

    Take a dremmel tool or a grinder with a metal disk cutter and cut out that portion where the heatsink screws into the original case. I have done that in the past and it works well.just sand down the rough edges afterwards to prevent cutting your hands while handling.

    Couple of months ago I've built myself a decent gaming pc out of junk and scrap. I've bought HP8300 office pc for 40€, it had 4 GB of RAM and i5 3570 with a 240 GB HDD. I've bought used RX560 4GB for 50€, 80 GB SSD for 20€, 500W 80+ rated PSU for 35€ and a 24 to 6 pin connector for 5€. I've also had a spare 500GB HDD and used couple of more sticks of my old RAM. End result is i5 3570 + 10GB RAM + RX560+ 80GB SSD (for OS) + 240&500GB HDD for storage, all of that for just 150€. It runs most games fine in 1080p resolution, so far happy with that. In future I might get i7 3770, it's supported on this mobo, and even a stronger gpu, but it needs to be compact size to be able to fit.

    It's what I did with a HP desktop pc 4th gen (I5 4400) . it's working great ! No need to upgrad for the moment :) . Combined with an RX 570 ( your advice) it gave pretty good performance :) . I've got Also a little I5 6500 but I don't think i'm going to use it just for something like 10 % perf better . As always good job ! thanks for the vid :)

    If you can lay your hands on a Dell 3020 tower, I highly recommend them for mid-low-end turnkey gaming systems. You can pick them up for around $150 US, they have an i5 and will come with 4-8 gb RAM. Bump up the RAM slightly (it'll take up to 16, despite Dell saying it only takes 8, max), drop in a 1060, and bam, you've got a nice little gaming rig.

    I've been using older Dell Precision Workstations for gaming and 3D Studio rendering machines. They're actually built to handle this kind of load, come with huge power supplies and multiple CPUs, etc. Not quite $100 cheap, but cheap-ish way to put together a sweet system without having to hassle with re-doing all the proprietary junk.

    Hey Tech, in the future if you are using a Corsair Strafe on those old machines press the F1 + Windows Lock Key, in the top right, together. The board should flash and the scroll lock light should be flashing. This allows the Strafe to communicate with the older BIOS properly. Let me know if this was helpful!

    I have used an dell motherboard from an xps desktop and put it in my beige hightower.
    At first indeed i couldnt start it because of that proprietary on/off switch.
    After some (multimeter) " research " i figured out if i bridge 3 pins i could use just an regular switch to start the pc. I made an jumper out of an old ide-data connector and its working fine.
    If your interested i could share that information (not shure it will be the same on every dell system)

    I just fit an Antec 500w power supply to run my HP 8300. If you know what you're doing and know how to solder it's easy just a real pain in the pants. Also handy is a crimper and some crimps for the motherboard and CPU plugs. Also you will need a voltage booster for the 5vsb to raise it to 12vsb. I mounted it on a piece of an old psu case I cut to rivet under the Antec. All the cable ends are custom fit so there's not any excess wire. I used the psu wires for all the peripherals so as not to overbear the HP feeds from the motherboad, and routed some excess wires for the usb3 power feed with a soldered together molex connector for that card. The sata connectors are reusable with a punch down tool, so it looks so good Its a shame to put the cover on it, but now I'm ready with two 22 amp rails divvied up to the motherboard and the video card 6 pin socket , All I need now is a good cheap video card and then I will start to learn gaming to pass the covid time. Just patting myself on the back here................................Mike

    Been working to do this with a HP Elite desk 800 G2 (i5 6500 2x4gb DDR4) I got for about $80 dollars. Still surprises me that it comes with a 80 plus platinum PSU
