The thing about the "USB-C" ports on the Everest is that they're not actually USB. They use a _connector_ that looks like USB-C, and fits USB-C plugs, but the protocol (maybe even the pinout itself) is actually a proprietary one that _only_ works with their hardware and their included cables. If you try to plug in anything USB-C, it won't work. The only actual USB-C port is the one for the keyboard itself, to connect it to your computer. All the "add-on module" ports are their proprietary ones. They admit as much in the FAQ on their website. So, if those new pads could connect directly to the keyboard, that would mean that you in turn couldn't use them without the keyboard. This is already the case for their modules (like the "media dock") - those only work with their keyboard, and can't work standalone, because you can't connect them to anything even though they look like they're using USB-C. Instead, they luckily elected to make the pads _actually_ use USB-C, so they're standalone. That just means they can't connect to the keyboard. I find all of this pretty misleading. Using a USB-C connector for something that isn't USB at all sucks. You can find plenty of people e.g. on Reddit who were tripped up by this and they almost "got" me with it, too.
I think the biggest selling point is not the hardware of the Stream deck but the nice rollout of software support. That is why a lot of people didn't like the LoupeDeck. The software was not as easy as Stream Deck
You should check out Zack Freedman's channel. He's working on the ultimate modular keyboard which might fit exactly your needs whenever he gets it finished.
A simple thing, which I think would be a nice Addon, are Keycap options. Like being able to choose wether you want re-labelable keycaps, M1-M12 or, what I personally want as an option, F13-F24. It also seems to me like keycaps could be pretty easy accessories to sell.
I've always been interested in the Mountain keyboards and these products just increased my interest! If they had released these sooner, I'd have probably bought them instead of my Stream deck!
Certainly a competitive option when comparing to the Streamdeck Mini too. I like the keyboard mounting system idea. Reminds me of an idea I've had for a while but have still not executed on. Maybe one day I'll get the motivation. Thanks for the video!
I've had the everest max for over a year and I only have small complaints about it. overall a really good board and love that they are adding new modules. The RGB could be better and brighter and as mentioned, the original screen keys on the numpad could have been more clicky. The major downside I see is that these don't use the usbc mount ports built into the existing board. Maybe if they used a twin ended usb a to a higher power usb c on the cable, that could help alleviate the power draw issues but they would still need to upgrade the internals of the board itself. Still have high hopes for the future of the ecosystem and look forward to a V2 (that hopefully will be compatible with the current slew of modules).
I have a really hard time accepting the power issue with the DisplayPads. You already pay a hefty price for a modular keyboard based on usb-c connections, and then it is only used as a mechanical docking system. A tiny color OLED of those sizes would require around 100mW per key. With USB 3 ports, you are guaranteed 4500mW and every PC has that. It's plenty of power for two dozen display keys, the LED drivers and a microcontroller.
This sounds like exactly what I need. The fact that it runs on its own wire with multiple profiles will be great. I use the Everest as my main typing keyboard, but I swap to a heavily tailored GMMK compact for gaming. I'd love to have an independent pad of stream keys available that I can pop on and off my Everest.
I just discovered this product on December 14, and this video really explained some of the features I was curious about. Now that it's currently on sale and I missed out on a big sale for the Streamdeck mk2, this would fit in my desk setup way better and seems more user friendly!
I think you're confusing your Mountains. Mountain is, according to their website, from Freiburg, Germany. There used to be another Mountain Keyboard, now called Mtn Kbd, who are from Australia.
10:00 Yes! I have been planning to get an XL to have plenty of room to put some of the same keys on each layer, to create my own "sticky" keys, but having the tool do it itself would be far superior. I do wonder whether that would have a higher risk of burn-in, and if they should be moved around to different spots on different layers 🤔
i always like the idea of these macro pads but as someone with a tablet and with touch portal being a thing i just can’t ever justify the purchase, even tho a persistent piece of gear would be neat
Having it not be connected like the default media key pad is a big downside. But still cool to have it mounted on the keyboard. I have the Mountain Everest and I'm very happy. I can move it around with the keypad on, but it would be better if it was a more sturdy mount.
I would just love to see a wireless version of a stream deck competitor! Actually a wireless version of the everest max would also be amazing but that is probably too much to ask
honestly, it is ridiculous how we can't just buy cheapo usb-to-bluetooth or usb-to-wireless-dongle adapters which make any device wireless. USB is just serial data and thus super simple to emulate. Obviously, it won't work with usb devices which require high-speed, but it would be good enough for any device that already exists as a wireless version.
Hopefully, I'm about to blow your mind. Do you have an old phone or tablet laying around? If so, try out Touch Portal. It's an app on both android and iOS. It's basically a wireless stream deck. I'd even argue it has just as much functionality as a stream deck, if not more. The free version only gives you access to 6 buttons, but a lifetime license for the pro version is only a couple bucks. If you're a budget streamer or just a big macro enthusiast, it's worth giving a look. I've been using it for almost 3 years now with a cheap fire tablet.
