    Just a quick update. Moza have reached out to let me know that they'll take my feedback onboard (which is nice to see!). And, there is a 'damping kit' included with the GS wheel, which will reduce the sound of the shifters if you want. It was included in my review version, but I guess I missed it. It's a nice touch!
    Further to the above, yesterday evening I received a software update which addresses the calibration of the paddles on the GS wheel. I've not had a chance to test it yet, but I'll update this comment when I've had a chance to set the wheel back up.

    Unlike Fanatec, which needs at least a $200* Quick release with electronics in it to work, you can use any $30 ebay wheel with a standard NRG style quick release on the moza R9. So it's not locking you into exclusively using their ecosystem of wheels.

    • @ChrisHaye
      @ChrisHaye  2 года назад +19

      Definitely. I think those 'clone' QRs have got a lot better over the years. I bought one when I first got my OSW system in 2017, and there was a lot of slop in the connection. But I've seen some recently that are much, much better. The downside of course is that you lose the wireless connection going that route, which isn't something that really bothers me. Though, it's less ideal for for those that use a lot of wheel rotation (rally, drift, tracks etc).

      That’s what I’m saying. That really burned me out when I was in the Fanatec eco system for about 4 years. Now I have a SC2 pro with an HRS XeroPlay. I pay about $75 for a wheel side spigot.

    • @adrianchannelle8651
      @adrianchannelle8651 2 года назад +2

      True, but for the money you pay for the MOZA setup, I do not want to be limited to just one platform. Fanatec gives you access to PC(which is THE sim racing platform, of course)but also the current consoles, XSX and PS5 respectively, for the same price. That is all that is holding me back from MOZA.

      I’ve been on 8nm on the standard QR and have had 0 issues. Sure it would be nice to have a better QD but I only have one wheel. So unless I run DCS and need the space my wheel stays on there and the QR is perfectly fine. I feel most people who complain about the QR system don’t even have one but complain about it anyways cause other people have. It’s not as big an issue as the internet pretends it to be

      THIS. Fanatec is all about locking you into their sub par, plug and play mid tier equipment. If you can do DD and want more from your money, there are much better options nowadays. Talk about falling asleep at the wheel.

      Warning!
      Within 4 months of light use my FANATEC McLaren wheel cracked at the shifter pivot point and where it mounted to the QR. I was accused of over tightening although I used a torque wrench set at 3nm.
      After many emails FANATEC then replaced the wheel chassis before admitting in writing it was a weakness in the wheel.
      Very soon after my CSL load cell pedal completely failed. I sent a video before sending them back as requested.
      After sending a follow up email FANATEC said they can not fault the pedals asking if I want then sent back.
      Eventually they were returned however within minutes I experienced the same issue.
      Following the usual delayed response FANATEC then offered a replacement only if a show proof that the faulty load cell was again on its way back to them.
      Prior to this delayed offer a local electric technician overheard my experience and offered assistance.
      I was able to demonstrate the issue and within minutes the technician diagnosed a defective voltage regulator attached to the load cell circuit board.
      No thanks to FANATEC I am now enjoying my sim racing again while I hold my breath for the next FANATEC failure.
      Regardless of the failures experienced I would not have written this if only FANATEC replied within a fair time frame.

    Whilst I am sure many people will be happy with the Moza and there are many great features, the problem for me is the way the warranty is managed. The hoops a customer has to jump through seem designed to discourage returns and repairs and the terms and conditions for the UK are actually illegal, not meeting the requirements of UK and EU consumer law. For me, this is a deal breaker.
    Concerning the 'jumping' analogue paddles - they can't be fixed in firmware without reducing steering rotation granularity. It will require a hardware update to increase the data rate from the wheel. The current transmitter/receiver combination use RS correction for transmission errors but the chosen RX/TX radio serial comms pairing is not designed to cope with the level of error correction required at higher data transmission speeds. This really was a bad design choice and indicative of a lack of experience on the part of the manufacturer. As was the use of only one RX/TX channel which multiplexes all the data. Expect the steering to stutter when using several controls at the same time.
    The pogo pins used for power transfer are a mixed blessing. Pogo pins are designed for use in electronics which are not changed often. They have a duty cycle of 300 insertions, although generally real world usage is three times that number. Pogo pins suffer from spring sag and both external and internal contact wear. They are also very prone to internal contamination and corrosion - they really should never be exposed to typical household contaminants such as dust, smoke, and dirt.There are many videos on the pros and cons of pogo pins in electronic projects - take a look. If you swap your wheel on a regular basis, the pogo pins may not last more than a year. The Fanatec has a common duty cycle of 3500 to 5000 insertions on the *female* (base) side and 8000/15000 insertions on the *male* (wheel) side. I note they don't mention this in the documentation; naughty Fanatec. However, once again you can expect about three times that in the real world.

      Just thought I'd leave my experience as a Moza owner from the UK.
      I received a faulty Moza RS wheel from Abruzzi UK. I contacted Abruzzi and their support team forwarded me to Moza, who were very quick to identify and attempt fixing my issue.
      It only took about 24 hours from the moment I contacted Moza to the moment they approved for Abruzzi to ship me a replacement wheel, so I'm very pleased with Moza's customer support 👍
      Edit - Also I have not experienced any of the stuttering you mentioned, but yes the clutch paddles are unfortunately jumpy. I also know people who have owned Simagic wheels with pogo pins for 2+ years and they still work perfectly with no signs of wear or corrosion.

    • @ChrisHaye
      @ChrisHaye  2 года назад +7

      Thanks for the detailed technical feedback Bertram. I did wonder if the paddle issue was related to whatever com protocol was in use, but that sort of thing is well beyond my experience / knowledge, so didn't care to speculate. The point you raise about multiple controls is an interesting one, and something I'll test when I get the wheelbase back on the rig. For most racers, I guess it's unlikely to be an issue, but if you're using those paddles as anything other than a clutch (hand controls for example), that could cause some major problems.
      It's funny you mention the Pogo pins as well, as I did write about concerns of the springs losing their effectiveness under compression, but couldn't find anything to back that up, so removed it from the final script. In any case, thank you for the detailed response - it's always nice (and rare) to come away from a RUclips comment having learned things!

    About Moza R9.. I saw and tested this few days ago in one of Indonesian's Technology festival, the Indocomtech 2022 at JCC Senayan, Jakarta. The FFB's when testing the car is really a good one and could equal Fanatec's (which I do tested in other place, although I am Thrustmaster T300RS user big time.). This steering wheel set could be a good entry for Simracers in future as I think that the FFB's are really helpful and could drive well even though just testing it on one sim and with limited powers out there.

The QR2 is designed to fix wobble for those not willing to read fitting instructions but do not change the pinning, so the main issue of clumsy-attachment by the *wet-ware* would not be solved.

On a side note, could you (or anyone also reading this), please tell me what car & sim you have showing in the B-Roll from the 15:15 mark?. It's is the only car (& sim) I don't immediately recognize???

    I don't think my PC has bluetooth so I'm guessing that's going to be a problem for the wheel. Would a bluetooth adaptor cause lag issues between the wheel and the PC? Or do you mean that the Bluetooth is between the base and the wheel?

    It’s a shame Fanatec didn’t release the QR2 before releasing new wheel bases. I know the Moza QR is the same as all the other Chinese dds but it’s a proven product. In my pea brain the Fanatec hardware looses to any product that uses a proper QR on a dd.

  • @chickenpasta7359

    They charge $60 for a table clamp. I'm not really sure how they're killing Fanatec when their accessories are wildly priced for an "entry level" wheel base. The wheelbase price seems like they're taking a loss on and making it up by charging more for accessories.

      I have torn two down. One was a review model used at a show and the other was a boxed release model. Inside they are very different - the boxed model components are 'meh' level. This is of course only a sample of two, but I feel a bait-and-switch is in progress.

    The only thing for me is the colour of the base. White and blue is not my favorite combo and would stick out in my all black, dark grey setup. I know it has nothing to do with performance but you also want a nice looking setup.

    • @ChrisHaye
      @ChrisHaye  2 года назад +3

      Yeah, they offered me the choice between white and black, and I went with white, since nobody else I'd seen had reviewed the white one. Personally, I'd go with black, the finishing looks better from what I've seen and then there's the general aesthetics.

    I think I get what Moza was doing with that GT wheel ... it's the first, last, and only wheel you'll ever need so ya... it costs a little more. Personally I love the idea. Fanatec's echo-system never attracted me... a bunch of shit I'll never use... ok I guess. I can see having one round, one D, and one GT wheel but that's about it for that VAST majority of customers. Mostly only the YT'ers who get the free shit all the time have stacks of wheels on their wall lol so Moza being smart and doing it right AND leaving themselves room to grow. They have SO SO SO SO earned my money now. #fuckFanatec who treats their customers like disposable pawns. #perfectionDrivenVsProfitDriven... that's the difference here.

    • @mazyata9958

      Fanatec had issues with reliability and customer service since the beginning. These bigger RUclipsrs fail to mention this. They get it for free and claim just like everyone else they are absolutely unbiased and hold nothing back. Bullcrap. When you get stuff for free you can never totally shut off your emotions. It's not the same as some regular joe blow buying these toys with their hard owned money. They will tell it like it is being right or wrong as it's coming out of their own pockets.

Pedals Basic to expensive, Shifter, Handbrake, and Wheels Galore… maybe in 2-3 years, If Moza even want to develop an Actual Ecosystem? Fair enough when it comes to software, that’s not my expertise!
