This is Why Modding Matters

  • In reality this is a video about a car, and an odd car at that. But, this particular blip of a car caused me to rethink (or perhaps overthink) just what modding brings to the sim racing community.
    The aforementioned oddball can be found here: www.racedepart...
    Assetto Corsa is as popular as ever, and arguably more popular than its focussed, modless successor. Of course, there’s more to that sustained success than just the mods. But, it’s hard to argue that the expansive lifespan of Assetto Corsa owes a significant amount to the modding community.
    In other news, it’s been a while, but I’m back. 2022 was a bit of a mess, but that’s all in the rear-view. Importantly, content should look a lot like it used to in the before-times, back to basics - or, rather, to the stuff I enjoy making.

    I love that you mentioned the impact of modding on developers. Marco Masarutto of Kunos has stated in interviews about the positive impact of modding on the industry, creating new talent and spurring progress. Additionally, he has said that the dev team for AC2 has made it a goal to match, if not surpass, the quality of "AC1 on modded steroids" (his words lol). So, the work of modders is literally moving the entire industry forward. Modding matters!

    Not only is sim-racing modding art, it's historical preservation. Take Nicecuppatea's fantastic 1923 French Grand Prix collection, or Fourty-Too's beautiful Delage 15S8 & Miramas. Already museums and tourism & culture ministers have commissioned mod developers to recreate historic race-tracks to represent parts of motorsports history; stuff like the Gnoo Blas mod originally for RF1 and later ported over to RF2 & AC.
    For people who want to take a proper dive into the rabbit hole of motorsports history via Sim Racing, GPLaps has covered a bevy of classic cars & tracks for AC, GP Legends, RFactor and many more sims, complete with the historical context of the content; both the real-life original cars and the in-sim development. Some videos I'd recommend are his 1923 Goodwood Shootout, his Delage 15S8 Showcase and his Tatra 603 showcase.

    I've been gaming longer than almost everyone here. First video game was Pong on the Atari back in the early 80s. Played most massive games throughout the decades, numerous online games and communities, and I have to admit, the Assetto Corsa modding community is the best I have ever experienced. The base sim and DLCs alone are an ocean of fun to be had, but then you open the door to the mods out there and...just wow. And to think 90% of the mods are all free too! You know the developers behind the mods truly love cars and the community and just want to share their creations.
    I'm now 1.5 years in to AC and it still blows my mind to this day. Never thought I'd be one of those types to buy a wheel, sim rig, VR, etc, but AC made me do it and it's one of the most mind blowing gaming experiences I've ever had. Being able to just jump in to a GT car on the Nordschleife and hot lap with a bunch of other people around the world, any time I like? in VR? With amazing wheel physics? It's unbelievable the ultimate edition goes on regular sale for $8!! I recommend any car lover to pick it up one day. We just recently hit our all time online player 24hours peek of over 15,000 players

    I find the Bisiluro a great example of the contagious passion of modders. You'll find the most niche and unexpected mods and you'll learn about vehicles and tracks you never knew of, all because someone cared about them enough to immortalise them on a game. So much automotive history and culture is preserved and taught through these mods.

    there is something I would like to share with you Chris. I do enjoy your channel. During 2020 infamous times, sim racing was a blessing for many of us to survive lockdowns. Lots of people looked for any extra info (even basics like videos explaining trail breaking etc.). But now we are in 2023 and the times are different. I do see how other popular sim racing channels evolve and how I lost the interest of the content they provide. It is hard to keep on releasing content every week in sim racing and I don't find specifically watching other people drive so entertaining (but that is fairly subjective matter). All I want to say is that I appreciate the effort and orginality you put in making your videos. The content you provide is less frequent but that corresponds to much higher quality. I like it! We all need that little flight of escapism from the harsh reality of official premium content, primarily because the content the modders make is out of pure love, more than anything. It's also lucky that there are the likes of Assetto Corsa, rFactor, Automobilista, Richard Burns Rally and other sims that absolutely encourage modding. The only problem is having enough space in your hard drive to accommodate it all.

    And Assetto Corsa, despite being 8 years old by now, looks like it could’ve been released just last year - or is at least capable of doing so with mods. Not to mention that features like rain or night were originally said to be impossible in AC, but were then developed by modders, a lot of it even after Kunos had moved on to ACC.

    Very true about AC's modding capabilities keeping it going as what I think is rF1's true successor. rFactor realistically had its run for about 9 years as well, but the engine really limits some things and time hurts.
    AC is turning 10 (counting alpha), but with constant support and updates through CM/SP in the same way Windows XP had unofficial community service packs, I could see it thriving for another few years unless AC2 is what we want it to be. As you've alluded to, it actually hit an all-time peak on steam very recently. It's not the only simulator with mod support and even GPL is still kinda kicking, but it's THE simulator to do literally whatever you want. AC's golden age isn't over yet.
    Where else can I have a realistic GT race at Road America with a league, then follow with a cruise around the entire Need For Speed Underground 2 map in a Lego hotrod?

    I would love to see modding in more and more platforms that have never even seen before. People would think modding is a PC only thing but I've seen it done in other platforms.
    For example: Saber Interactive released Spintires Snowrunner and with it they launched modding support for consoles. How did this work? You had to make an account on a modding site that THEY chose and the game would download the mods that you want to use.
    Another case? SimplePlanes. The developer designed the game with modding in mind and was made available in Android and iPhone with modding drag and drop style.
    There are tons of games that would be 1000x better than they currently are if modding support was of like AC or similar (FR Legends, Assoluto Racing, Minecraft Pocket Edition, the Assetto Corsa mobile game) however the modding in some platforms either required to replace an asset of the game, have an external launcher or they just don't have modding support at all.

    Great video, and I'd never heard of the twin torpedo. Such a wonderful example of the magic modding can provide.
    I've been thinking about this topic recently, with the announcement of AC2 and people's speculation of will it/won't it support mods. I've only recently started dipping my toe into AC because i quit simracing around the time it originally released. Seeing things like CM, CSP, and just trying out some modded tracks, seeing videos on how huge drifting has become in the game, the pacific coast highway and Shutoko Revival Project and no doubt many many more, it seems inconceivable to me that AC2 won't support mods. It would surely be the dumbest decision ever by a developer to try an go any other way.
    AC would have sold and generated only a fraction of the revenue for them it it wasn't for mods. I don't think Kunos are are dumb. They understand this and will continue support modding in the future.
    Slightly more annoying are the early snippets of info around rennsport, which wanted to use NFTs (Lol) because they are so intent on maximising revenue, before they faced a backlash. I can see them trying to push tired failed concepts like paid mods in game and being gatekeepers of modded content and taking a cut etc etc.
    But then I haven't seen or heard anything about rennsport that shows how it moves the game on in any significant way from any sim already available today anyway.
    Regardless of what the other players do, AC2 will be moddable, and will rule simracing for the next decade. No one else seems geared up to compete.

    Social media companies are a great blueprint for sim devs, I think. They’re not wildly popular because of the content they produce - they’re popular because of the extensively functional platform they provide for users to express themselves through the types of content the platform accommodates.
    The Motorsport tragic in me loves licensed 1:1 recreations of real life tracks/cars, but the simracer in me will go wherever I can just have a good race. Licensed content is nice to have but I’ll take a title loaded with 100% fictional content every day of the week if the racing & to a slightly lesser extent the overall UX experience is better/less infuriating.
    AC’s popularity is what it is because it’s the closest a sim racing title has ever got to a social media platform - helped in no small part by a thriving community that embraced it purely because it was (& still is) the only one that allowed them to do whatever it is they want to do…
    Hell, just the money saved on licensing deals alone would dramatically increase a studios net profit AND give them more resources with which to refine the platform further.

    As a modder (Beamng and AC) I make around 0-5$ per race track/map in donations from public releases and 100-400$ from private ones, the public ones take more time because they will be seen by more people and they moan about something not being perfect the most. I started working in gamedev because of one public release that was seen by a gaming studio that works on one of the upcoming and hyped Sims, but made around 4k$ from the private ones in 3 years. If you're not going to be lucky enough (or don't want to work in gamedev) I don't know if public modding would be worth the time unless you're very passionate about a car or location/track but I guess there's more people that are happy to pay to have their local racetrack made for AC for themselves than people who can actually replicate it and put it in the sim for everyone to enjoy.

    I wonder why some of the modders dont combine their resources to build an open source racing platform? Ilya has done stunning work on AC modding and there are plenty of others as well and just because the platform is open source doesn't mean the content has to be, in the same way we have free and paid mods now?

    There's so many videos and accounts of sim drifters easily taking to real drifting from their time with AC mods. For a motorsport hobby that is somewhat more attainable than full on racing, AC mods have no doubt saved people time and money by getting easy, risk-free seat time.

    mooding are really good
    but we need modding, not ripping, now AC had tons of other game's rip, like rf2 all dlcs and iracing cars, and so on, and some people are pround of use ripping because they can play other game's model for free in AC... it's a shame
    but those thing made from scratch, and permission convertion, in AC, rf2, and some old games like RBR, even GPL, brings them live longer and longer

    Well, if one deigns to think for oneself and look at what mods over all genres gave us, one cannot deny their positive impact, no matter how much certain companies by Electronic A***** try to deny this. Let's have a look:
    Battlefield 1942->Mod Desert Warfare->Battlefield 2
    F1 99-02 Challenge Mods ->GT Car racing ->GTR->GTR2->R3E and Pcars 1-2
    F1 99-02 Challenge Mods->rfactor->DRM Mod->Group 5 in every modern sim
    ''->rfactor mods->LMP in modern sims
    Baldur's Gate->Baldur's Gate mods->BG2EE and Pillars of Eternity (the mods proved that there was still a market for classic party based RPG.)
    MWLL (Mechwarrior Living Legends) Crysis/Crysis Wars mod->Mechwarrior Online->Battletech->Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries (Without the Mech proving that there was a Playerbase of Battletech/Mechwarrior fans, there wouldn't be any modern games.)
    Mount&Blade->American Civil war mods, viking era mods, napoleonic war mods, crusades mods, lord of the rings mods, warhammer 40k mods, GoT Mods, ASOF Mods, Warhammer Fantasy mods........->Holdfast Nations at war, War of rights, Kingdome Come Deliverance=basically 99% of the historical games of today and a ton of the fantasy games are due to Mount & Blade or Mount & Blade Warband mods.
    Battlefield 1942->Battlefield 1918 Mod->Verdun->Battlefield 1.
    Falcon 4.0 has been modded for the last two and a half decades, yeah it's close to 25 years old now and it still kicks DCS into gear on a few things, because there are still thingst aht are better in this fan mod than in a modern commercially made simulation. Like the AI, missile autopilots, the ATC, the IFF System, Dynamic Weather and the dynamic campaign. ED is finally improving the AI and making a dynamic campaign, because the utter madlads at the BMS team not only have dragged Falcon to DX11, 64-bit and VR.
    Both it and DCS have some great mods, like the Community A-4 for DCS or the tons of Theatres of Operations for Falcon.
    Warcraft 3->Defense of the Acients Mod->DOTA
    Half-Life 2->Insurgency Mod->Insurgency Modern Infantry Combat->Insurgency Sandstorm
    UT 2003*->Red Orchestra Mod->Red Orchestra Ostfront 1941-1945->Red Orchestra 2/Rising Storm->Rising Storm 2 Vietnam.
    Arma2->DayZ Mod->DayZ Battle Royale->switch to Arma 3->PUBG.
    Half-Life 2->Chivalry Mod->Chivalry Mediveal Combat->Civalry 2->Mordhau
    UT 2004->Killing Floor Mod->Killing Floor.
    Half-Life->Counter Strike mod->Counter Strike 1.x->CS 1.6->CS Source-> CS Global Operations
    This list is neither exhaustive, nor comprehensive, it's just there to argue the point.
    *Unreal Tournament 2003....if I have to explain that one to you.....well you've missed out and now nothing, John Snow! ;) :P

    I tried the Nardi Bisiluro mod shown in the video, but it has a problem where the AI goes much slower than me. I can't race with it. I couldn't find anyone else mention that in the few reviews. If that's an issue, they should at least mention it in their page where they talked about fixing the other AI things.

    Modding begs the copyright question... Since modders are not licensing the rights from a specific brand, how does the developer get around this issue by allowing such car or track model into their game?

    • @jimbochoo3316
      @jimbochoo3316 Год назад

      It's not the developer's fault the software can be hacked and modded to play variations of its game. I doubt they can be sued in any way for copyright. However, the license they have in their game for cars might be terminated/not extended in the future. Still, the car manufacturers have to be careful not to anger the community. It probably doesn't benefit them much to clamp down on the enthusiast community.

    Any developer that is anti-modding is an idiot. I think the shining example of big time modding is Half-Life 1. So many big dev teams and main stream titles came out of HL mods. People keep playing, and keep buying that game now 25 years later because of mods. Why would you spend hundereds of millions of dollars making something that sells well for a few months, then peters out after 2-3 years when you could just drop some mod tools with it and keep making bank for TWENTY FIVE YEARS even if its from $5 Steam sales.
