I just ordered my CSL DD and I can’t wait!!! Your setup looks amazing
Haha cheers ❤️
Wow. what an amazing, comprehensive review... Really appreciate the time you spent putting this all together!
You’re very welcome ❤️
Great indepth review Laurence, has to be the first port of call for any prospective buyer.
Thanks man! Yeah hopefully it will serve as a long term reference for people
Excellent video. Still not 100% decided which set to get but the video was very informative.
Glad it helped!
The r9 to me Is the sweet spot
it's a happy medium that doesn't break the bank for sure
I’m thinking r9 w the es wheel n formula mod, 280mm to make r9 feel like it’s got +2 ffb 😂
@@leomendoza450 your +2 joke made me laugh way harder than it should have 🤣 but I agree
I’ve gone for the same set up r9 plus es plus SRP pedals with mod.
Great video and very helpful to hear some of the differences. Also thank you for including the weights! I've been trying to find that info for so long. I was surprised the fsr with a screen was lighter than the gs too but it is a smaller diameter I guess
Yeah I forgot to mention the diameter difference! It’s still surprising though
Hi Laurence, many thanks for this video, very concise and has helped me tremendously in deciding what to buy as my first foray into the direct drive market. The R9 coupled with thr GS wheel is the front runner for me and seems the best 'bang for your buck'.
Yep that’s an amazing combo
Will defo be going for the R9 + GS wheel once I have saved up the money, very excited to upgrade from my Logitech G29.
Great combo
I recently bought the R5 base bundle with ES wheel and pedals. This is my first DD base. I used Logitech G920+gear shift for many years now. I won't go back to those after I got the feeling of the R5 base. I ordered the TSW wheel as well with the adjustable table clamp. I will mostly do Truck simulation and just a little racing (GT and rally). Moza R5 is amazing. Maybe I will upgrade to R9 when the price feels right.
NICE
Hi Laurence. Thank you so much for your reviews, they were super helpful in my purchase decision! You're putting out really quality content. I went back and forth between Moza R9, Fanatec CSL DD and Simagic Alpha Mini. Finally purchased an R9 base with FSR and CS wheels (for formula/GT and rally/drift, respectively), mostly due to better pricing and availability in my country compared to the other options.
One thing I'm not sure it's normal, and I can't tell from watching videos, is that it takes a bit of extra force to connect the FSR wheel to the wheelbase compared to the CS. The CS "snaps" to the quick release almost effortlessly, while the FSR I need to push it in with a bit more force. I never used a proper QR before so maybe that's normal. The CS is heavier so maybe it just benefits from stronger inertia when pushing it in. Is that your experience as well?
Hey Fernanda! This is not my experience really. I just offer the wheel up and it snaps into place. It could be that you need to spray some PTFE lubricant into the ring and ball bearings in the wheel side of the quick release. That should sort your issue ;)
Thanks for the video and the info Laurence, keep up the good work. As a R5 owner I am contemplating the idea of buing a GS V2 wheel but I am bit worried that the R5 will struggle to handle a 300mm wheel. Did you had the chance to try it yourself and if so would you say it "degrades" the driving experience?
great vid! finally someone who tells the weight of those steering wheels...👏👏🥳😅 i'm curious about new cs v2 now😅 (the 300mm version)
Are they working on that? I haven't heard anything from them
@@LaurenceDusoswa no, sadly! i think it was a mistake from them... whem they posted for the first time the cs v2 variant they puted 300 mm in description, but now they changed to 330, so...
I’m enjoying the r5 bundle, using for rally and GT
Yeah it’s incredible value!!! Enjoy!!
I just got my moza r5 bundle and a thrustmaster th8a shifter 2weeks ago and got the clutch pedal coming in the mail all I can say is wow it's a massive upgrade over my g29 from Logitech. If your on the fence about a moza wheel just get one you won't regret it
thanks for the comment!
Yo quick question, does moza r5 works with logitech g29 pedals?
@@ghandyardyan no
You seem like you would be a very thorough lover. Cheers.
😂😂😂
26:40 All the videos online about the CS wheel show the metal cylindrical encoders, including the product listing I purchased from, but my CS V2 has taller flared and fluted switches, like the ones you see on the GS
Thinking about the R9 and CS or Alpha Mini with the button box. Turn Racing R320. Which would you lean towards? Love the content though!
For me the alpha mini wins
Great review ! At minute 15:45 you connected the R9 base with the ES wheel. In my country the ES steering wheel can be bought separately, as well as the base R9. From what I understood from the video, it is possible to do this set without problems. Right ?
You need the r9 v2 base if you want to use the ES steering wheel
Thank you for making this video Laurence…I have the R9 base with the CS steering wheel, and now I know that I have a V1 base. Have you had any problems with wireless connectivity? My wheel disconnects sporadically, and it often causes missed shifts. I’m hoping you have some insight, or advise because getting in touch with Moza technical support has been a nightmare.
Ah that sucks!! Did you buy direct from them?
No, but I did finally get a response from Moza. Apparently a Bad wireless transmitter is the culprit. I was told they are sending me a new “part”. The language barrier is real lol
@@beaudycryer3257 have you resolved your issue?
They should do a load cell brake upgrade for the SRP lite, or make they SRP to be able to plug into the R5.
Interesting point yeah! I didn’t review the CRP or SRP pedals
@@LaurenceDusoswa yeah compatibility throughout their entire range should be a thing, seems like they're starting to work on some of it with v2 stuff. Merry Xmas and thanks for all you do, it's been helpful and fun watching.
Did you say the ES won't work with R9?
I know it is not compatible with R9 v1 but I'm fairly certain it works with v2 versions of that base.
That to me, is the 'sweet spot'...especially if the Formula mod is used.
Massive reduction in mass but with even more torque.
I really appreciate the vid I was wondering if the moza r9 is compatible with fanatec csl LC pedals and the moza es steering wheel.
yes. you need an R9 v2 for the ES wheel compatibility. And any USB pedals will work fine :D
@@LaurenceDusoswa thanks for the help
Would you recommend the R9 over the R5 of you have to desk mount it? Would obviously have to turn the FFB down.
I already have the SRP pedals with load cell but can't decide between R9 and R5 with the ES wheel+mod.
Do you have any thoughts?
It really depends on your desk. The ES wheel will only work on an r9 v2 wheelbase. But honestly the r5 with es wheel and mod will be great for your needs. I loved the r5 with the es wheel.
r9+gs is unbeatable combo. i can't even think of a reason to buy logitech or TM bases even if they are newer. Same for fanatec, the f1 wheel is still small and expensive. the only thing i don't know and i have to take your word (or other ytbers word) for it is the ffb. not the power value, its almost insignificant, but the detail and the way the software translates road effects on your hands. i think some games might work better with one base and others better with another one. since all these information is really hard to obtain, moza r9 + gs is the way to go.
Yeah the ffb is really detailed with the GS. Did you see my r9 first impressions video?
@@LaurenceDusoswa im on it rn
The problem with Moza is their availability. Similar to Fanatec. I bought an R5 and would like to upgrade to more FFB and the GS wheel. However both places I have bought from before said they won't be carrying Moza anymore because they don't supply enough product, never tell them when they can expect more, etc.
@@Mediocrity_In_Action that is concerning. I see only a few shops in eu selling moza products. Chinese manufacturers can't rely on direct sales from china. Import fees and delivery times make the purchase a nightmare to deal with. Same goes for after sales support.
@@vasiliswr794 Ya, direct from Moza would cost 205 dollars to be delivered here to Arizona. Which sucks because I really do like my Moza products. The R9 and GS wheel are really what I want. I don't think anyone else makes a wheel in the same price range that checks all the boxes for me like the GS.
hello great video, got a quick question see if i was to buy the moza r9 wheel base v2 version could i use the moze es wheel version and the wheel mod from moza
yes 100%. The ffb is amazing with the 280mm rim on the R9
Do you know if there's any news about the console compatibility?
I love that little ES Formula mod for the R5 bundle, that's well thought out, except for the fact that you'd constantly be switching wheels if you play multiple games like F1 and DiRT Rally for example.
I'll definitely be referring this video if anyone asks about a good buyers guide!
I don’t know any more than the general public does right now unfortunately
If you switch that often, it could be worth getting ES wheel
moza r5 bundle with lite clutch and brake kit and the newly released 12 inch round steering adapter with shifter and handbrake costs $900.
The r9 with srp pedals and brake kit, CS wheel, shifter and handbrake and its only 1100plus change. its a no brainer. Get an r9.
Yep do shop around
Have you experienced any heating issues? I saw another RUclips video saying the R9 was having cooling issues. I also looked on Moza's Reddit channel and saw some complaints about it running to hot and cutting back on DD. I'm guessing it could be tuned a bit back to prevent this but was hoping for some temperature testing after hours of racing.
Nope. No issues at all. Even over extended sessions
Hey Laurence! Is the R21 worth it or would you go the Simagic Route as of today?
I haven’t used the r21 so I can’t comment unfortunately. As for ecosystems, Simagic is ahead for me due to better pedals, better shifter, handbrake and the bases are generally stronger than their advertised torque figures
Does the same go for the cs v2 steering wheel, with the weight and everything? Or did they improve that?
They did make it lighter they say. I haven’t tried it though
Wondering if the es steering wheel would fit the CS button box?you would probably need to take it all apart.
I haven’t tried but I can’t imagine it working
They probably need to make a dedicated rally wheel to get weight down. Would of been a good option.
I like alot of buttons on my steering wheel. The ES wheel has most buttons and the leather feel + is the cheapest as well. It's 28cm diameter is the same as my current Thrustmaster T300RS wheel. It looks quiet similar and it weighs not as much as the CS wheel. You say the combo R9 base + CS wheel isn't ideal due to the weight of the wheel.
Is the combination R9 base + ES wheel a good one? Or is the diameter too small for this 9 Nm or is the non wireless connection a problem with the R9 base?
I'm thinking about the R9 base + ES wheel with the formula mod. Do you think this is ok?
Yeah the ES wheel on the r9 is a great ffb experience. Just make sure you get a v2 r9 base which supports the ES wheel :)
@@LaurenceDusoswa ok, thx! For both the advice and the video!
I’m getting the r9 for christmas. Should I get the gs wheel or is the fsr worth the extra money and why?
Depends on what you're going for. The FSR is incredibly impressive but personally I'd go GS and buy a simhub compatible dash. I just don't think the MOZA dashes are where they need to be.
@@LaurenceDusoswa thank you. I’m thinking I’m gonna get the gs wheel, and 3d print phone holder for the r9 base, and put simhub in my phone as a dash
Multiple reviewers, including yourself, had noted a year ago that the Moza R16 Wheel Base was "notchy" around the center. Has that been fixed? Anyone know if it's still an issue?
I noted that in my first impressions but firmware updates sorted this issue and the force feedback is really nice now. That's one of the main reasons I'm glad that I did a long term review
2.42kg CS vs 2.15kg RS V2, and 11.6kg GS.
In your R9 review you note the CS is a bit too heavy for the R9, but have sung the praises of the RS V2.
Is the RS V2’s 300g diet enough to make it a good combo with the R9, or is it still going to be just a little too heavy for the motor?
~$900 is too much to spend to end up turning around and upgrading because the experience is compromised, so I’d like to get it right the first time.
I think the slew rate of the r9 is a bit weak for the round rims that moza offers. That being said, it’s still a nice ffb experience. The RS is nice too. They’re great products but compared to other brands, the heavy steering wheels are a little less lively than some competitors.
I think there might be advances coming from moza in this area soon
@@LaurenceDusoswa Thank you for the reply!
If you were going to give a PC system to someone else who you know will not be willing to engage in frequent troubleshooting, which brand direct drive would you pick for stability? Simucube? Paying extra is fine if the system will work consistently for him.
I know you recently said your favorite DD is the Simagic Alpha U, but I know my father will just not use the rig if he’s having the software issues you described in your most recent video.
I think I’m going to get the Alpha 15NM for myself, but I can’t hand my father a rig that’s unstable.
Are the new V2 wheels and revised R9 based communicating via bluetooth or via physical contact?
Honestly I don't know. They still support wireless anyways (everything except the ES). But I'm not sure how it all works. I concentrated on the fact that whatever they did, it worked.
Upgraded to the r5 bundle from a TM t300rs. It feels amazing but, I’m curious why people want more power.
It’s like owning a 5 series bmw and wondering why anyone would want a 7 series I guess
Does it worth the upgrade? Because im new in this simracing world and want to buy my first steering wheel, but confused between TM 300 rs gt or moza r5 bundle because in my countey the price is quite similiar
Next do a Simagic guide!
Yep it’s in the works
@@LaurenceDusoswa thanks! Love your content. This was a great video
I just bought the R9, SR-P pedals, and the GS Wheel direct from the website. Shipped out fast, and I really enjoy the products. I highly recommend to buy the accessory kit for the srp pedals tho, as the brake is too light.
Ah man! Any updates on this? That’s kinda crappy
@@LaurenceDusoswa Yes, I'm glad you asked. I emailed Moza about this, and they told me that all my items ARE in stock, and that they would be shipping them out to me in 5 days from today. Hopefully they follow through with this, and this doesn't throw any smoke in their direction. It very confusing to the customer when they see that a few items say "In Stock", or "Out of stock", but the majority of their products do not say anything about stock. I guess I just got the wrong impression. Anyway, I am really, really excited to get my hands on my first DD wheel!!
Did you get the kit?
@Jesse Kortes yes, and it was very smooth actually. It was wrong about the website, and got the stuff in a very reasonable time.
Coming from a TM 300 RS, which Moza base would you recommend? R9 or R16? Other than power, is there much difference in the detail?
More power usually means more detail so buy the one you can afford
@@LaurenceDusoswa I can afford both. However if I buy the R16, I can only get one wheel. I also race from a desk and Moza does not have a desk clamp for the 16 right now. If I get the R9, I could afford two wheels
Will you be getting your hands on the Moza handbrake to review by any chance?
Yea! I have one here :)
@@LaurenceDusoswa awesome!! Looking forward to the review
I’m considering getting the R9 and want to know if it has mounting holes on the bottom to attach to a rig.
Yes it does
will you also be making simagic buyers guide? or simagic ecosystem is still to small compared to moza?
I will 100% be doing this. I have pretty much everything Simagic but haven’t used everything long term yet
@@LaurenceDusoswa
In germany restock date is 16.1.
Imo, simagic seems "underated" 🧐🧐
@@xvooodooo808 maybe because simagic got some issues in the past i think even boosted media got issues with simagic right?
Just a heads up for anyone looking to buy Moza, my r9 wheel base that is less than 3 months old failed and also the quick adapter broke, I was in touch with Customer service but they stopped replying to me all together. Look elsewhere or buy from a US retailer. Do not buy directly from them, they’re based in china so there’s nothing else I can do but take an L.
OUCH really ? :( sorry to hear that
Disclaimer: do NOT buy the GS V2 for an R5 base. If you’re wondering why you’d even do so given it’s an r5, it’s simply because the other offerings are a bit too heavy for the torque on the r5.
I have been troubleshooting my GS V2 on my r5 base since 2pm, it’s now 10:52 pm. The issue? No matter what settings I use, the oscillation is extreme. Ive done everything I know to try and solve it, wheel friction, reduce road effects, 100% wheel dampener, natural inertia, all the stuff that can impact oscillation I tried. Each time, it’s as if I haven’t changed a single setting. The only thing that works is reducing my FFB to near nothing, basically way too subtle to notice anything regarding the car itself.
Looking into solutions, waiting on MOZA support.
I didn’t experience this at all. Seems odd. Which sim are you on?
@@LaurenceDusoswa I’ve got 90hrs on ACC, 80 on AC and been playing F1 2022. Quite honestly, F1 2022 doesn’t have this issue. Not sure why, I’m very familiar with settings to help oscillation such as dampening, and even wheel friction can help. I’ve boosted all sorts of dampening settings and still have the extreme oscillations… however if you have a suggestion I could try or a setting you think I should key in on please let me know. Love the GS but man I can’t help but feel the experience being somewhat ruined. MOZA has still not gotten back to me yet, worth mentioning I’ve gotten into sim racing about a month ago, tried the g920, T300, and now ofc the R5.
Hello! I’m looking to buy something to upgrade from my g29, I’m looking at the r5 or r9, would the fsr wheel work with the r5?
yes the FSR works great with the r5/r9 as long as they have the 11 pin setup (v2). Both are good but buy the one you can afford
@@LaurenceDusoswa okay thanks but are not all r5s 11 pin ?
Is the bounce that high with the CS and the R9. Bc i want to buy those. I’m 16 years old and wanna go to higher level racing. I’m a bit budget but want good value( i drift and F1 )
It’s a lot of bounce if you are used to higher powered wheelbases which are a bit more urgent and precise. It’s a great combo but it could be better if the rim and button plate was lighter
@@LaurenceDusoswa thx for the info now i know what to buy🙏😀
Can the r5 or r9 connect to consoles and if so do I need multiple RIMS for xbox and playstation
It’s not console compatible, no
1. 16:57 you said R9 + GS = 710
In their web i see 958
2. Is there a Moza R9 V2?
3. Moza software 6 months ago was terrible, so terrible as the default presets. How are the default presets and Software today?
I need good default presets because im terrible touching the software
Yeah I must have read that wrong or without tax. My apologies. I was reading prices of sim-motion as they have great deals. But you are correct: us.sim-motion.com/products/moza-racing-r9-direct-drive-steering-system
The r9 v2 is out, or coming. I’m not sure. But all products are going to v2
Default presets are good now. I’m happy with them for sure. The software used to be pretty poor, yes. But it’s a lot better now
Hi Lawrence how does the R9 compared to Logitech for immersion
The r9 is not as good as the new Logitech pro DD. It has far more power but lacks the steering wheel rims and unfortunately the Logitech is HUGE
Hi Laurence is there anywhere in you can go into a shop and buy any moza gear or is it online I'm in Dublin
Online only really. Contact Murray motorsport though. They might have one available for test
@@LaurenceDusoswa ya I was thinking that myself ya I'll give them a ring thanks for the reply
MOZA or Simagic.....MOZA or Simagic... 😧
Hey would these be mountable to a Next Level F-GT lite? That's what I have for now.
Moza and Simagic use the Fanatec mounting pattern ;) as for which one, that’s the tough choice :)
Anyone tried the R9 with ES wheel considering theres a 12 inch round mod now?
I haven’t but that’s because I have the v1 r9 which doesn’t have the extra pins to communicate with the non wireless steering wheel unfortunately
So you are saying,if we have a R9 don't bother with a round wheel?
It’s still a decent experience but when compared to the GS/FSR it’s nowhere near as good. I think the CS is a great price but it’s super heavy. If you are spending your life savings on this setup I just want people to get the best possible product. If you have an r16, the round moza rims are great. The r9 just lacks a little grunt
3:51 So, are you saying the R5 wheelbase works with ANY wheel? f.ex the MOZA GS V2 GT Wheel ?
The r5 will work with any v2 wheel, yes
@@LaurenceDusoswa Okay cool! Thank u so much :)
Then I might get the r5 bundle, to the upgrade the rim at a later date, and not having to worry about having to buy a new wheelbase.
i was wondering what is the ora 5 in the earlier part of the video
ora 5? what's the timestamp
@@LaurenceDusoswa actually you said the word "R" 5. What I heard is "Ora" 5... Its just your accent. It's totally fine mate 😉. I listen to your video in the earlier part, then I realise what you said.
@@alphaschneider2468 ahhhh hahaha yeah just the accent 😂
I thought the R5 only worked with 2 wheels. thats TONS of people main complaint about it.
Any wheel with 11 pins will work
Is there a timeline for the mecca evo1 review? :D
They’re still on my rig. Feel free to ask me questions in my discord. They’re excellent pedals.
What about the Simagic H-patteren?
Haha unfortunately I’m not sure if I’ll be getting one for review
Why microcenter did not open store in abandoned Fry's in Renton is a huge mistake! Seattle area is a Huge gaming market with nowhere to spend $$$...
Ahhhh man! That’s a shame
Moza r9 to r16 worth the upgrade?
From a force feedback point of view, yes. Especially with the larger rims
is the R5 compatible with the GS?
yes it is as long as it's a GS v2 (with 11 pins)
I hope they will give us PS5 compatibility very soon 😭
it's going to be interesting to see if they ever end up doing that
Can you use The es steering wheel With The moza r9?
I believe you can with the v2 moza r9. But don’t quote me on that
Whats the discount code?
There’s no discount code unfortunately. If you use my links, I make some money for the referral but it still costs the same for you unfortunately. Moza got rid of their discount codes recently :(
Hi
Notification SQUAD
R5 bundle is NOT for upgrading! Get R9 for more serious sim racing....
I think it’s a great upgrade over a Logitech g923 or similar. I was able to match my pace with it. The pedals are the weakest part
lol the whole world is desperately trying to buy the fanatec DD for over a year and hommie has one just sitting in a box. FML.
