    I believe the pot with the handle that turned was an ice cream churn. Mix ice, whole cream, rock salt and add some vanilla then spend the next hour cranking the handle, after which you put the mixture in a dish and place in a freezer for a few hours and "et voila", homemade ice cream. I haven't seen one since around '69 or '70 but it sure does look like one. My parents had a more modern one in the 1970's that was electric so you didn't have to spend all that time and energy hand cranking it. Nice pick, thank you for the video.

      @@PaperandMoose I would die for a nice big, clean DRY basement like that! Maybe I would become as organized if I had that! I live in a house where the basement is partly block/cement walls, and the majority is just ground!! This had been my parent's house they purchased in 1953. At one point I had 1/2 of the attic organized until weatherization used 7 feet of that awful fluffy blow-in insulation, despite my cries to the contrary! Rant over. Always look for a home with a dry basement, off-street parking and a usable attic! Looking forward to the clean-out!

      The trees in this video were cast in molds made by the Alberta company. Arnell's molds made a tree that was more slender. Other companies made tree molds but Alberta's was the most popular. There are few ceramic mold companies left. Most of them were family businesses started in the 50's and 60's. By the late 80's the founders were retiring and their kids and grandkids sold the mold businesses. Many of the old molds are still in production by companies that bought out the family businesses.
      That's why all the kitschy holiday ceramic items still look like they're from the 60's and 70's. Mold companies haven't invested in new designs in a long time due to the collapse of the ceramics hobby. Just nowhere near as many people with kilns buying greenware to fire or casting their own so mold sales aren't near the levels of 40-50 years ago.
      Ceramic slip casting molds can last for a very long time if not abused. I grew up in the businesses and still know how to cast the best greenware.

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  2 года назад +1

      @@greggv8 That's why there are so many varieties of trees, due to the different companies and their mold style. Makes sense! I always enjoy finding a "different" style tree, whether it is skinny, hefty, tall, short. I do have a ceramic tree mold that I purchased at an estate sale a few years ago... I figured that I have the trees, why not have the mold too!

    Some of those Roy Rogers lunch boxes go for $50 or more.

      They do! Unfortunately, this one must have been used quite often, as there were a decent number of scratches and paint loss. No thermos either... Funny how that thermos is usually the missing item out of the older lunch boxes!

    I don't know... I think I prefer the junky ones😆

      You aren't alone, as I do as well. Though they can be dirty, without electricity, and the chance of running into critters, I also enjoy the junky one. I like the aspect of discovering something hidden in a dusty attic corner or digging something out of a garage loft.
