    Definitely underrated among other FMV games. This one actually played like a game, had interesting visuals entertaining cut scenes. The balance between well-produced sci-fi movie and hammy acting kept my interest and made me want to see it through to the end. The challenge was fair and rewarding to those who took the time to get better at the game.

    I love these early FMV games. Sega cd, even as wonky as it is, is one of my favorite ways to play these. The poor compression and limited color palette adds to the nostalgia of it. Lots of fun back in the day.

    • @AxiomofDiscord
      @AxiomofDiscord 3 года назад

      The compression at the time did not bother me the lack of color in video did. So I definitely know which bothers me the most today and back in the day. Everything looks so washed out when not drawn as sprites.

We could never afford a Sega CD (or even a Genesis, after we got an SNES), and the displays they had at the stores like that were the only ways I could play. I especially really like when someone had a different reaction to my own at the time the thing released and has then had an opposite history with the thing. Lots of people who didn’t buy the stuff at the time with their own money will look at older games and find them amusing now. I remember the music was next level and it had pilots you could pick as wingmen who all had these in depth bios, which was totally my jam as a kid in the 90's.
    A similar one was Star Crusader, where you could train up wingmen pilots and then send them to train others. When one of your best pilots died who had been with you from the start of the game it was pretty wrenching. You could also capture alien ships and use them as your own and change sides and join the enemy in the middle of the story.
    Two shining stars from my childhood where I'd be playing space combat sims with a helmet on, wishing I was a space fighter pilot.

The general initial buzz was that these FMV games were a little underwhelming. I never got to play them at the time, but to me they always looked really good and exciting at the time. I can't stop thinking of Tainted love when I hear that track.
    But those cut scenes are very reminiscent of the direct to video action films I grew up on in the 80s and 90s. And some of those special effects really do look like the style used by ILM. Especially that scene of the sewer shark moving through the tunnel, so it doesn't surprise me.
    80s quality practical special effects are as much of a lost art as the self aware comical acting in those days.

    Holy shit, I found a community of people who also love this game. I’ve love it since release and am now playing it on the Polymega.

    Glad to see this genuine fmv and mini b movie classic get some love , it deserves more .
    I was enamored with this game's charms and characters from the moment i loaded it up for the first time , i think i bought it the first week of release , all these years later i still love it , the 3do version is even better in some respects because of the higher quality visuals but this one has some minor subtle differences that i appreciate more plus it has potent nostalgia feels for me

    WOW I remember this! I got a little taste of it when I played it on my friends Sega CD. For the time it looked amazing. I’d like to see a non compressed version of the game play. I did not know John Dykstra directed!! But it makes sense since the footage of the sewers looks so good. It has that Star Wars feel to it.

    Beat the game when it came out. Most difficult part, any finger prints on the disc would mess it up bad.

  • @DrGamelove
    @DrGamelove 3 года назад +10

    God I loved this hot mess so much. You can’t really understand why this was impressive unless you were coming off 16 bit like we were back then. Kinda funny that now 16 bit rules again and games like this are considered absolute garbage.

      I think it's because FMV games are the exact opposite of the current retrogaming thing.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 3 года назад

      Sewer Shark was often considered garbage, even in 2004/2005, when I got my first Sega CD system. The game's biggest problem is there's no in-game tutorial, and you would have to *read the manual.* Anyone who didn't thought the game was trash, because *they* didn't know better. I've played far worse, though.

    This actually looks like a playable fun game, Sega Cd made a few of these games with real people in it and i remember Double Switch with Corey Haim in it, Was like watching a movie rather than playing a game.

      Double Switch was so badly designed for gameplay.

    • @lmcgregoruk
      @lmcgregoruk 3 года назад

      @@Cannotbetamed1 I at least knew HOW to play Night Trap, Double Switch I have no idea what I'm doing, I can't even set one trap. I mean I'm pretty sure last time I attempted it, I set one trap to max power, then set it off when there was no reason to. Come to think of it, I've got the remake of Double Switch on Steam, I'll give it another try later, see if there's some kind of manual for it.

    • @Cannotbetamed1
      @Cannotbetamed1  3 года назад +1

      In Double Switch there are multiple traps in each room so you need to memorize which one is which to set and activate when someone walks over it. The timing is really fussy too. It’s bad.

    I actually enjoyed this game quite a lot when it was released. This one and Novastorm from Psygnosis which was very similar and released on the Sega CD a little later than Sewer Shark.

    The thing about these old FMV games is that unless you bought the original physical copy which came with a manual, you won't know what to actually do in the game to advance further into it as there are no tutorial or training section in-game to help prepare you.

    Spot on comparison with the Space Mountain stage from AITMK. I still gotta give the nod to Night Trap personally, but this was one of my favorite Sega CD games back in the 90's.

    Thanks for the review. I used to own this game back in the mid 90s. The only thing that made it so popular wasn't for its game play but for its movie like game. This was big in the 90s gaming world. It's sad that SEGA hardware went bye bye because they had the right ideas just way too many consoles. Sega Saturn and DreamCast will always be my fav.

    Thank you for making this video. When I was a kid, my older brother bought the Sega CD and this was the only game that we kept coming back to. The security camera games were not fun. I never came close to beating Sewer Sark but it was genuinely fun even if it was frustrating.

    Yes! I loved Sewer Shark so much back when I got the Sega CD in.... 1993 it must have been? wow 28 years geez... and nowadays I only seem to see it get dismissed, but it was *such* a fun game. Beating it felt like such an accomplishment too. So great to see a positive review like this. Only quibble with the video, not enough Catfish. One of my favorite parts of the game, I swear I still have some of lines burned into brain after all this time. "Catfish to Ghost, the dang thing bit me! Vector niner.... six... twelve."
