Sega CD was my first CD-based system, bought in 1993. It was a system I loved, but I was the only person I knew who had one. People just weren't ready to jump from cartridges to CDs just yet, but that was okay because it gave me a head start on what the 1990s video game scene was going to look like.
I just kind of stumbled onto you guys from watching too many reviews. There's a lot of channels like yours but you actually have a lot of polish to your videos. Wow. Plus you don't bullshit around with reviews, you get right to the talking points and introduce a lot of games. I think I found a new channel to binge.
My buddy had a Sega CD and I really enjoyed the few games I played for it. The Lunar games and Sonic CD were great. Even some of the cheesy FMV games like Sewer Shark and Ground Zero Texas have a special nostalgic place in my heart. Good times.
I really liked the FMV games that were ports of arcade games, at that time that was more or less the only way you were going to play the real games on a console.
I just watched this again after numerous years and I was like I know I have a burnt CD-R for my Sega CD that says gamesack. Popped it in and I cannot believe you did both 4:3 and 16:9. I have an x'eye hooked up to a crtv and a model2 Genesis and Sega CD hooked up to a hdtv. Dude, the 16:9 on the hdtv worked really well. Bravo, bravo. You sir are master of your craft.
I've been collecting for the SEGA Mega CD since 2004. It is a vastly underrated system blamed as the beginning of the end for SEGA... It had so many gems and the definitive version of many 16 bit gen games like Earthworm jim, Mortal Kombat and Mickey Mania. Collecting for it today is a little too rich for my blood but no one here should miss out on classics like Sonic CD, Snatcher and Keio's Flying Squadron.
well to be quite honest sega Saturn Was the blame since nobody couldn't make a Sonic game for the console some of them had to go to the hospital for the stress for making that game
That is sad but who can argue with that. Thats like nintendo not having a mario on there system. It sells and makes them profit. While i think the dreamcast was a great attempt, the saturn base that bought the system for a sonic game never really came back around. I really miss sega

Love the video! But an FYI for any interested parties: You actually do NOT need the backup cart to play scenarios 3&4 on Shining Force CD. When you use the system menu to look at save games, you'll see two files for Shining Force. One is 99 blocks, one is 1 block. The 99 block file is your save game for the scenario you're playing, and the 1 block file keeps information about which scenarios you have completed. As long as you ONLY delete the 99 block file, you can play all 4 scenarios with just the standard system storage. If you just delete your save game from within the game rather than the system menu, it will make sure the proper data is kept so you can play all 4 scenarios.
Suprised not to see Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside. One of the best non SF/MK/KOF fighting games I've played. The extra fatalities were really good and if I remember correctly, it was the only game that doubled the available on screen colors of the system through a software trick.
Because the fatalities were pretty much the only interesting thing about the game. It certainly is not the best non Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, or King of Fighter fighting game. There are many more that blow away Eternal Champions Sega CD.
@@NirnBootMod Eternal champions: Challenge from the darkside also had a SHIT-TON of hidden unlockables and characters for a 90s game. It is indeed one of the best sega cd games of all time. And yes it did give streetfighter, king of fighters, and mortal kombat a run for their money. It was a 90s thing tho.

Street fighter 2 and it's many rereleases were good, but if you played eternal champions cd, you knew that eternal champions was gonna be the next big thing. Until sega killed it. Street fighter 2 on the other hand, was multi platform and generational. So it couldn't be killed.
I totally agree it was one of the best! I played it much longer than most games. It had so many good characters, not just 1 or 2 that I found fun like other fighters. I wonder if the nay sayers are judging it by the cartridge version? CD version was WAY better than the cart! Everything was improved, not just adding cool cinemas. I bought the cart used out of curiosity. It felt like an early build compared to the CD.
Yes the Sega CD. People judge it harshly but a couple of years ago I got mine out and went through my library of games, most were FMV and sucked, so I branched out. I found it has a plethora for great games out there. Really this console (or add-on) pushed the envelope. Others were making CD add-ons and they did not rise to the popularity of the Sega CD. I have to credit it for the Playstation and other disc based systems that came after it.
Sega CD is an amazing console/add-on. Unlike 32x, it's game library has some really great games, or at least good games with great soundtrack. Personally, I don't have any problem with fmv games, which I kindda like, so this console fulfill my needs.
My collection feels sad due to not having Space Adventure in it. I actually really enjoyed the game and love the heck out of Snatcher, just sucks it's such a pain in the ass to find
Lol snatcher, the game is easy to find, but impossible to find for a reasonable cost. XD I recently got into Sega CD games, and the best ones are going to break the bank. xD
***** No, there's one More; Keio Flying Squadron for SEGA CD commands and even higher price. Around $500-$700 easily. The lunar games are easily $100 each, and Vay and popful mail are reaching that point too.

All It took is hearing the snatcher intro music to make me play it again. That jazz but cyberpunk noir feel always makes me listen to it repeatedly. One of the few retro video game music I have downloaded and constantly listen to.
Although I tend to favor FMV games on the SEGA CD, this super-sized episode covers a lot of the (other) great games for the platform. I think that it can be difficult for those who didn't experience the SCD in its heyday to understand why it was so important. Concepts like scaling & rotation were still novel and impressive. Redbook audio and voice acting were new concepts entirely for console video games at the time, and FMV-- especially to the degree that CD games were using it-- was really impressive. Of course, today, all of these concepts are taken for granted or considered archaic in nature; console technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since the early 1990s. It's really great to see the SEGA CD getting this kind of attention, and I've now got a few new additions to my want list, thanks to this video.
Thanks Peter and you have some good points. It was really fun experiencing the capabilities of a new CD system back in the early '90s. I always felt that the possibilities were endless and I was eager to see what the future of gaming was going to be like. Well here we are now in the future and I'm not disappointed. A lot of my favorite games are from the past two generations. I wonder what the future holds for us now. Can't wait to find out.
exactly! i Have just bought a Sega CD after selling it eons ago. Cannot be more happy. The FMV games has a charm of their own. Yea, they´re pixelated, but that´s the charm of the 1990´s. I have just bought the new Steam Night Trap Version. It´s fine, but, really? I´d rather play the original version.
I recently bought a Sega CD system. There are a ton of great games on it. people think its all fmv games but it has tons of gems. lunar silver star and eternal blue are two of the best rpgs of all time. it was an misunderstood system with some great classics. also added amazing sound and was used as a CD player. those were expensive back in the day. same thing as a ps3 having Blu-ray.
I agree about the Lunar games -- best RPGs I've ever played. But it's Sega's fault for focusing on FMV games instead of the awesome scaling and rotation capabilities as evidenced by Batman Returns and Soul Star. If these games had been available at launch, or were pack ins, I think people would have had a very different perception of the system. Too bad :-(
+Tashiro Sato yup that is true if there is an expensive Sega CD game you want go to a website like CoolROMS or Emuparadise and get your games that way or you can just use Kega Fusion which is a multi emulator that emulates everyone of Sega's consoles from the 3rd to 4th generation, I always use Kega Fusion 10 out of 10

You guys make a really great show. I really love the Sega CD and your episode does it justice. I am thankful that this will show people who do not have a Sega CD a reason to buy one.
I've always been a strong supporter of the Sega CD. When it comes to pre-PS1 CD gaming tech, the Sega CD is propably the best thing you'll find. True, it is plagued by an industry that didn't know what it was doing with this technology at the time, but unlike something like the 3DO or CD-I, you can honestly have a decent collection of games to back this purchase and cost only half the price of those heaps of shit. This video is definetly one that showcases this quite well. You won't find the most exotically varied library and there is *alot* of rough to dig through, but the diamonds you find are definite keepers.
@@SonofSethoitae I won't deny that the 3DO had games worth playing on it. It's main issue was just the fact that most of what you'd have wanted to buy on it wasn't anything you couldn't find anywhere else, which didn't help in justifying it's ludicrous price tag.

The Sega CD is my favorite add-on for the Genesis, solely for the games like Sonic CD, NHL '94, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, Final Fight CD, Silpheed, Earthworm Jim: Special Edition. etc.
@@lemarechaltateau Keio Flying Squadron is an absolute must if you like horizontal shmups at all; Robo Aleste is the same deal for vertical shmups. Both are truly fantastic. Mickey Mania goes from being merely mediocre on other platforms to great on the Mega/Sega CD. The Misadventures of Flink is a gorgeous platformer. Popful Mail is super fun. And Wolfchild is... interesting; certainly worth a try.
Excellent episode. I own two Sega CDs, the Model 1 and Model 2 (Model 2 I've owned since 1995). I've enjoyed playing many of the games here (all the Working Designs games of course, Panic! and Snatcher, among others), and also Earthworm Jim Special Edition, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, and more. A fine antidote to all the unjustified criticism that the Sega CD was "just an FMV machine".
Other than design differences (Model 2 was designed around the Model 2 Genesis, but will work with a Model 1), I've never seen any perceptible differences, perfomance-wise, between the two. I do use the Model 1 currently because my Model 2 recently quit reading discs (I suspect the cd lens needs replaced). And it's still rock solid.
matt fahringer Yeah, pretty much. Though if you have a Genesis Model 1, having a Sega CD Model one looks more aesthetically pleasing to the eye (just as having a Genny 2 makes the Sega CD Model 2 look better).
I think my brother used to have a Sega cd a long time ago I remember he had Night Trap and that game scared the crap out of me as a little kid. Thanks for showing these lesser known games. Snatcher looks really cool.
Man, you guys had to make another video. I just got a PS4 two days ago with Farcry 4 and have been working 12 hour shifts. I just got off of work and now I have two watch a 40 minute video. I knew I shouldn't have turned my PC on. lol
I'm liking the game play, its a better looking Farcry 3. So far about 3 or 4 hours in, the story is not as compelling to play as 3 but hopefully I will get into it when I get some time to play. If you enjoyed 3 then it is a buy.
I've owned a Sega CD since Christmas 1992. It is great to see videos like this so newer gamers (or people who didn't have access to it then) get a chance to see what it was all about. Fantastic video Game Sack.
Screaming Nikolai Belinski it's not even a console, it relies on the stock Genesis 68K and VDP, and also has access to the YM2612 and SN76489 sound chips.

I've buyed the Mega CD just when was released, it has really good games but it was huge with a lot of cables. I remember as well the CDX but it was too expensive. Mega CD was an excellent underrated system.
Its been a long time since I bought a Sega CD and you guys got me thinking about it again....finding them is collector condition is not easy these days though. Great video guys :)
It was already mentioned in a previous episode but just wanted to plug Eternal Champions: Challenge From The Dark Side. It is an incredible exclusive for the system and really made great use of the cd medium with tons of fighters, moves, fatalities "overkills" in this case, nice use of fmv.
Finally, the episode I've been waiting for since finding this show. I have my own Mega-CD, and I LOVE it. I think it's a vastly underrated and "Overhated" (Pat. Pend.) add-on. When people judge it, it's always "They should have just called this 'The SEGA Shitty Full Motion Video Console'.", they always pretend that the good/great games for the system don't exist, in my own collection I've got "The Amazing Spider-Man Vs. The Kingpin", "Ecco the Dolphin", "Sonic CD" and "Road Avenger" and have loved them all, I've even even enjoyed playing the poor FMV games like "INXS: Make My Video", mainly for their cheesy 90s feel. I feel it's a great add-on/system and deserved to do better. Great review guys, and just to let you know, you have at least one fan as far as New Zealand (Me). P.S. Laughed hard at the FMVbola joke.
I was so excited when I got this for Christmas. I loved feeling like I was gaming on the cutting edge and also hoped I would get to play Night Trap. FMV seemed like the logical progression even though a lot of those games controlled like Dragon Quest. I only ever really played Star Wars chess and the Kris Kross movie maker but I enjoyed it for years.

This is probably the best encoded video game footage I have ever seen on RUclips. Or is it 60fps and I'm missing something? This was amazing to watch. Those Silpheed sequences looked incredible and smooth. Could you tell how you did that? How did you avoid desynchronizing the games' flickering of sprites while not being at full fps?
owned the sega cdx myself. Im so glad you guys covered it since its so rare to see anyone at all talkin g about it, let alone who even know about it. Was it a rare console as far as you know? I still have fond memories of being the only kid in school who had a 'portable' cd player (which doubled as an awesome console).
A lot of people say its underrated and Sega messed up the marketing etc, but you know what, the thing was just too damn expensive for most people here. Everyone who had a Mega Drive would have liked the CD but Santa put his foot down.
I agree I think price had a lot to do with it, especially the original price. That made it harder for the thing to get off the ground. If the model 1 unit came with a spring loaded tray (push-push like an SD card slot) it could have been cheaper. If it had a flip top at the outset it could have been cheaper still.
Game Sack Yeah, but saying as the poster seems to be European, its worth pointing out that the Model 1 version got a pretty limited release here. Off the top of my head, I think there was only 6 months between the Model 1 and Model 2, if that. The problem was that rather than pass the lower production costs onto the customer, Sega Europe instead decided to increase their profit margin a tad. Plus it still seemed like a brand new system in the 'Old World'. The RRP difference between the two models was pretty small, though at least the European Model 2 tended to come with the Sega Classics Arcade Collection, Cobra Command and Sol-Feace as standard. I think they also added Road Avenger to that bundled list in early 94. Also, saying as its the UK, the price was massively inflated as usual. About $350 at Xmas 93 when I got my Model 2. It's always worth remember that Sega was always huge in Europe, and especially Britain. The Mega-Drive utterly dominated the Super Nintendo, the Master System actually beat out the NES. They didn't have the same struggle to win over customers here as they did in the US.
Totally! Here in south america it was crazy expensive, but ultimately the advertising had something to do with it, because the games being advertised weren't worth the money. All the games advertised were like first person or FMV, and at the time I could get much better things for my PC. If I'd known which exclusive games I was missing, I would have totally gave it a second thought back then (like the games featured in this episode)

I remember when this first came out, magical times back then. I'm a heavy metal musician who throughout my highschool career actually spent most of my weekends and some week days playing in bars, yes in bars. When you have hair down to your ass and your band is actually good the owners never questioned us. With that being said I didn't start getting into video games until I was 20 or 21 years old and I started off with a Sega Genesis. Being that young and being around the crowd I was in, I developed a few nasty addictions, I found that playing video games all night kept my mind off of the booze and drugs. I might just be lucky but gaming really helped me kick my addictions. So I was a total Sega nerd, when I wasn't playing music at night, working my day job, I was stuck in front of my TV. When the Sega CD came out, it blew me away, I had to have one. I wasn't able to get the model one but my girlfriend bought me the model two when it came out, absolutely loved it, it did have some crappy games but it had some awesome ones too. I spent more time on my Sega CD than I ever did on my Genesis even took it on the road gigging and would spend the night after jamming, playing video games in the motel room the rest of the night. Looking back, that "so called shitty add on" probably saved my life, good times, good times.
Loved the episode! My brother and I saved our money when we were 11 and 13 for the Sega CD. It was the first thing I ever saved my allowance for when I was a kid. We even pre-ordered it from Japan out of an Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine months ahead of time. Unfortunately at our age, we were unable to do much other than rent games for it. And most video stores had the lamest titles. I was pretty disappointed with it in general back then. But I still have it and love it! Now that I'm older and can find the titles I never knew existed when I was a kid, the system is my favorite in my collection. Thanks guys, keep on with your amazing channel!

Wow 40 minutes long.. I think we need to get you all a pizza for this. I never owned a Sega CD. Nor played any game except the Sonic one. I was too much into my brand new Super Nintendo. Was "Super" excited. I was going to mention Magic Knight Rayearth since I thought there was one on the Sega CD but remembered it being on the Saturn. FMV bola. No wonder why Joe looked a bit flushed, looked pale and lack of color with a bit of the raspy/horse voice. :p Anyways, I don't have anything else to say so thanks for this awesome long show guys.
Even though I am and always will be a Super Nintendo fan, I really think the Sega CD is a sadly underrated console. I have a CDX and a few of the better titles. I'm kinda disappointed you guys didn't talk about Earthworm Jim Special Edition, but I guess it's not that different than the console versions.
Well it did have that extra level which was... OK. But it was worth it to hear Jim say "I'm nude!". I remember my girlfriend at the time getting a big kick out of the Sega CD version of that game for whatever reason. It's definitely the definitive version of the first game.

The PC-88 did dominate the Japanese PC market through most of the 80s and was the PC that originated games such as Thexder, Silpheed, Dragon Slayer, Sorcerian, Portopia serial murder case, Valis, Ys and Popful mail! It was so cool and popular that it even got Nintendo games in it! (by Hudson Soft, licensed from Nintendo) Like Ice Climber, Excitebike, NES golf, and variations of Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. Special! Not to mention, it has a version of Space Harrier that sounds amazing!

I always loved the port of the Smurfs. It had exclusive cut scenes that made it seem like you were watching an episode of the show. Other games I'd play through, Sonic CD, Prince of Persia, both Ecco 1 and 2, Spider-Man, Snatcher, Sol-Feace, Time Gal, Popful Mail, Power Rangers, Mickey Mania, NBA Jam, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Lords of Thunder, and Keio Flyng Squadron. I like Cute em ups too.
... why no Wonderdog?? This was a fantastic platformer by Core, and my favorite Sega CD game. Lots of levels, a ton of different enwmies, great graphics and music, and spot-on controls... yet this game never gets any love.
A really worthy episode of Game Sack! I love the dynamic you guys have, Dave always cracks me up. I loved all the details in the games too, like the characters personalized to look like you guys. You also featured great not so covered games and a ton of information neatly organized about each one. This was one hell of an episode!! I LOVED the end gags as always, but these cracked me up! I will probably watch this episode a bunch of times!
This review changed my thoughts about SegaCD.It seems to be a quite powerful attachment for its time,if you exclude the FMV based games,which in my opinion was a little bit lame.By the way,please GameSack,make an episode of Amiga CD 32 console.Nobody has made so far a descend review for this system!Give it a try,thanks!

Nice episode guys.This actually focuses on the good games of Sega-CD rather than the poor FMV-based ones.The problem was that Sega back then advertised mainly the FMV games and that's why most people thought it only offered games like that.This video clarifies things a little bit.And the Brimaxian song is downright hilarious.
Sega did such a terrible job marketing the system. It was widely thought of as a failure, as they tried to push the FMV games the most, even though they were by far the worst ones on the system. There were just so many great games that were for the most part unknown unless you were really in the know. And Sega also made a huge mistake by going with the mechanical tray model first instead of a more reliable pop-top version.

The only problem is the price!!! So far the cheapest one I could find was over $80 !!!!

I just watched this again after numerous years and I was like I know I have a burnt CD-R for my Sega CD that says gamesack. Popped it in and I cannot believe you did both 4:3 and 16:9. I have an x'eye hooked up to a crtv and a model2 Genesis and Sega CD hooked up to a hdtv. Dude, the 16:9 on the hdtv worked really well. Bravo, bravo. You sir are master of your craft.
I've been collecting for the SEGA Mega CD since 2004. It is a vastly underrated system blamed as the beginning of the end for SEGA... It had so many gems and the definitive version of many 16 bit gen games like Earthworm jim, Mortal Kombat and Mickey Mania. Collecting for it today is a little too rich for my blood but no one here should miss out on classics like Sonic CD, Snatcher and Keio's Flying Squadron.

That is sad but who can argue with that. Thats like nintendo not having a mario on there system. It sells and makes them profit. While i think the dreamcast was a great attempt, the saturn base that bought the system for a sonic game never really came back around. I really miss sega

Love the video! But an FYI for any interested parties: You actually do NOT need the backup cart to play scenarios 3&4 on Shining Force CD. When you use the system menu to look at save games, you'll see two files for Shining Force. One is 99 blocks, one is 1 block. The 99 block file is your save game for the scenario you're playing, and the 1 block file keeps information about which scenarios you have completed. As long as you ONLY delete the 99 block file, you can play all 4 scenarios with just the standard system storage. If you just delete your save game from within the game rather than the system menu, it will make sure the proper data is kept so you can play all 4 scenarios.

Suprised not to see Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside. One of the best non SF/MK/KOF fighting games I've played. The extra fatalities were really good and if I remember correctly, it was the only game that doubled the available on screen colors of the system through a software trick.
Because the fatalities were pretty much the only interesting thing about the game. It certainly is not the best non Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, or King of Fighter fighting game. There are many more that blow away Eternal Champions Sega CD.

And yes it did give streetfighter, king of fighters, and mortal kombat a run for their money. It was a 90s thing tho.

Street fighter 2 and it's many rereleases were good, but if you played eternal champions cd, you knew that eternal champions was gonna be the next big thing. Until sega killed it. Street fighter 2 on the other hand, was multi platform and generational. So it couldn't be killed.
I totally agree it was one of the best! I played it much longer than most games. It had so many good characters, not just 1 or 2 that I found fun like other fighters.
I wonder if the nay sayers are judging it by the cartridge version? CD version was WAY better than the cart! Everything was improved, not just adding cool cinemas. I bought the cart used out of curiosity. It felt like an early build compared to the CD.
Game Sack is literally one of the only channels that can make 20-minute+ long videos and find myself watching them in a single sitting!

Yes the Sega CD. People judge it harshly but a couple of years ago I got mine out and went through my library of games, most were FMV and sucked, so I branched out. I found it has a plethora for great games out there. Really this console (or add-on) pushed the envelope. Others were making CD add-ons and they did not rise to the popularity of the Sega CD. I have to credit it for the Playstation and other disc based systems that came after it.
Sega CD is an amazing console/add-on. Unlike 32x, it's game library has some really great games, or at least good games with great soundtrack. Personally, I don't have any problem with fmv games, which I kindda like, so this console fulfill my needs.

Lol snatcher, the game is easy to find, but impossible to find for a reasonable cost. XD I recently got into Sega CD games, and the best ones are going to break the bank. xD
***** No, there's one More; Keio Flying Squadron for SEGA CD commands and even higher price. Around $500-$700 easily. The lunar games are easily $100 each, and Vay and popful mail are reaching that point too.

Although I tend to favor FMV games on the SEGA CD, this super-sized episode covers a lot of the (other) great games for the platform.
I think that it can be difficult for those who didn't experience the SCD in its heyday to understand why it was so important. Concepts like scaling & rotation were still novel and impressive. Redbook audio and voice acting were new concepts entirely for console video games at the time, and FMV-- especially to the degree that CD games were using it-- was really impressive. Of course, today, all of these concepts are taken for granted or considered archaic in nature; console technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since the early 1990s.
It's really great to see the SEGA CD getting this kind of attention, and I've now got a few new additions to my want list, thanks to this video.
Thanks Peter and you have some good points. It was really fun experiencing the capabilities of a new CD system back in the early '90s. I always felt that the possibilities were endless and I was eager to see what the future of gaming was going to be like. Well here we are now in the future and I'm not disappointed. A lot of my favorite games are from the past two generations. I wonder what the future holds for us now. Can't wait to find out.

exactly! i Have just bought a Sega CD after selling it eons ago. Cannot be more happy. The FMV games has a charm of their own. Yea, they´re pixelated, but that´s the charm of the 1990´s. I have just bought the new Steam Night Trap Version. It´s fine, but, really? I´d rather play the original version.
I recently bought a Sega CD system. There are a ton of great games on it. people think its all fmv games but it has tons of gems. lunar silver star and eternal blue are two of the best rpgs of all time. it was an misunderstood system with some great classics. also added amazing sound and was used as a CD player. those were expensive back in the day. same thing as a ps3 having Blu-ray.
I agree about the Lunar games -- best RPGs I've ever played. But it's Sega's fault for focusing on FMV games instead of the awesome scaling and rotation capabilities as evidenced by Batman Returns and Soul Star. If these games had been available at launch, or were pack ins, I think people would have had a very different perception of the system. Too bad :-(
+Tashiro Sato yup that is true if there is an expensive Sega CD game you want go to a website like CoolROMS or Emuparadise and get your games that way or you can just use Kega Fusion which is a multi emulator that emulates everyone of Sega's consoles from the 3rd to 4th generation, I always use Kega Fusion 10 out of 10

I've always been a strong supporter of the Sega CD. When it comes to pre-PS1 CD gaming tech, the Sega CD is propably the best thing you'll find. True, it is plagued by an industry that didn't know what it was doing with this technology at the time, but unlike something like the 3DO or CD-I, you can honestly have a decent collection of games to back this purchase and cost only half the price of those heaps of shit. This video is definetly one that showcases this quite well. You won't find the most exotically varied library and there is *alot* of rough to dig through, but the diamonds you find are definite keepers.
3D0 is definitely not as good as Sega CD but it's no heap of shit like cdi either.
The 3DO actually has a bunch of really good games, mostly PC ports.

I won't deny that the 3DO had games worth playing on it. It's main issue was just the fact that most of what you'd have wanted to buy on it wasn't anything you couldn't find anywhere else, which didn't help in justifying it's ludicrous price tag.

The Sega CD is my favorite add-on for the Genesis, solely for the games like Sonic CD, NHL '94, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, Final Fight CD, Silpheed, Earthworm Jim: Special Edition. etc.

@@lemarechaltateau Keio Flying Squadron is an absolute must if you like horizontal shmups at all; Robo Aleste is the same deal for vertical shmups. Both are truly fantastic. Mickey Mania goes from being merely mediocre on other platforms to great on the Mega/Sega CD. The Misadventures of Flink is a gorgeous platformer. Popful Mail is super fun. And Wolfchild is... interesting; certainly worth a try.
Excellent episode. I own two Sega CDs, the Model 1 and Model 2 (Model 2 I've owned since 1995). I've enjoyed playing many of the games here (all the Working Designs games of course, Panic! and Snatcher, among others), and also Earthworm Jim Special Edition, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, and more.
A fine antidote to all the unjustified criticism that the Sega CD was "just an FMV machine".
Other than design differences (Model 2 was designed around the Model 2 Genesis, but will work with a Model 1), I've never seen any perceptible differences, perfomance-wise, between the two.
I do use the Model 1 currently because my Model 2 recently quit reading discs (I suspect the cd lens needs replaced). And it's still rock solid.
matt fahringer Yeah, pretty much. Though if you have a Genesis Model 1, having a Sega CD Model one looks more aesthetically pleasing to the eye (just as having a Genny 2 makes the Sega CD Model 2 look better).

I'm liking the game play, its a better looking Farcry 3. So far about 3 or 4 hours in, the story is not as compelling to play as 3 but hopefully I will get into it when I get some time to play. If you enjoyed 3 then it is a buy.

I've buyed the Mega CD just when was released, it has really good games but it was huge with a lot of cables. I remember as well the CDX but it was too expensive. Mega CD was an excellent underrated system.

It was already mentioned in a previous episode but just wanted to plug Eternal Champions: Challenge From The Dark Side. It is an incredible exclusive for the system and really made great use of the cd medium with tons of fighters, moves, fatalities "overkills" in this case, nice use of fmv.
Finally, the episode I've been waiting for since finding this show. I have my own Mega-CD, and I LOVE it. I think it's a vastly underrated and "Overhated" (Pat. Pend.) add-on. When people judge it, it's always "They should have just called this 'The SEGA Shitty Full Motion Video Console'.", they always pretend that the good/great games for the system don't exist, in my own collection I've got "The Amazing Spider-Man Vs. The Kingpin", "Ecco the Dolphin", "Sonic CD" and "Road Avenger" and have loved them all, I've even even enjoyed playing the poor FMV games like "INXS: Make My Video", mainly for their cheesy 90s feel. I feel it's a great add-on/system and deserved to do better. Great review guys, and just to let you know, you have at least one fan as far as New Zealand (Me).

I was so excited when I got this for Christmas. I loved feeling like I was gaming on the cutting edge and also hoped I would get to play Night Trap. FMV seemed like the logical progression even though a lot of those games controlled like Dragon Quest. I only ever really played Star Wars chess and the Kris Kross movie maker but I enjoyed it for years.

owned the sega cdx myself. Im so glad you guys covered it since its so rare to see anyone at all talkin g about it, let alone who even know about it. Was it a rare console as far as you know? I still have fond memories of being the only kid in school who had a 'portable' cd player (which doubled as an awesome console).
A lot of people say its underrated and Sega messed up the marketing etc, but you know what, the thing was just too damn expensive for most people here. Everyone who had a Mega Drive would have liked the CD but Santa put his foot down.
I agree I think price had a lot to do with it, especially the original price. That made it harder for the thing to get off the ground. If the model 1 unit came with a spring loaded tray (push-push like an SD card slot) it could have been cheaper. If it had a flip top at the outset it could have been cheaper still.
Game Sack Yea exactly. The model 1 has an electric tray on rails, that costs a shit ton to manufacture.
Game Sack Yeah, but saying as the poster seems to be European, its worth pointing out that the Model 1 version got a pretty limited release here. Off the top of my head, I think there was only 6 months between the Model 1 and Model 2, if that.
The problem was that rather than pass the lower production costs onto the customer, Sega Europe instead decided to increase their profit margin a tad. Plus it still seemed like a brand new system in the 'Old World'.
The RRP difference between the two models was pretty small, though at least the European Model 2 tended to come with the Sega Classics Arcade Collection, Cobra Command and Sol-Feace as standard. I think they also added Road Avenger to that bundled list in early 94.
Also, saying as its the UK, the price was massively inflated as usual. About $350 at Xmas 93 when I got my Model 2.
It's always worth remember that Sega was always huge in Europe, and especially Britain. The Mega-Drive utterly dominated the Super Nintendo, the Master System actually beat out the NES.
They didn't have the same struggle to win over customers here as they did in the US.
Totally! Here in south america it was crazy expensive, but ultimately the advertising had something to do with it, because the games being advertised weren't worth the money. All the games advertised were like first person or FMV, and at the time I could get much better things for my PC. If I'd known which exclusive games I was missing, I would have totally gave it a second thought back then (like the games featured in this episode)
Due to adding the Motorola and extra ram as with the scaling and rotation chip. Lack of promoting there killer apps like sonic cd, soulstar, rpg/strategie games, and many more.
I remember when this first came out, magical times back then. I'm a heavy metal musician who throughout my highschool career actually spent most of my weekends and some week days playing in bars, yes in bars. When you have hair down to your ass and your band is actually good the owners never questioned us. With that being said I didn't start getting into video games until I was 20 or 21 years old and I started off with a Sega Genesis. Being that young and being around the crowd I was in, I developed a few nasty addictions, I found that playing video games all night kept my mind off of the booze and drugs. I might just be lucky but gaming really helped me kick my addictions. So I was a total Sega nerd, when I wasn't playing music at night, working my day job, I was stuck in front of my TV. When the Sega CD came out, it blew me away, I had to have one. I wasn't able to get the model one but my girlfriend bought me the model two when it came out, absolutely loved it, it did have some crappy games but it had some awesome ones too. I spent more time on my Sega CD than I ever did on my Genesis even took it on the road gigging and would spend the night after jamming, playing video games in the motel room the rest of the night. Looking back, that "so called shitty add on" probably saved my life, good times, good times.
Loved the episode! My brother and I saved our money when we were 11 and 13 for the Sega CD. It was the first thing I ever saved my allowance for when I was a kid. We even pre-ordered it from Japan out of an Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine months ahead of time. Unfortunately at our age, we were unable to do much other than rent games for it. And most video stores had the lamest titles. I was pretty disappointed with it in general back then. But I still have it and love it! Now that I'm older and can find the titles I never knew existed when I was a kid, the system is my favorite in my collection.

Even though I am and always will be a Super Nintendo fan, I really think the Sega CD is a sadly underrated console. I have a CDX and a few of the better titles. I'm kinda disappointed you guys didn't talk about Earthworm Jim Special Edition, but I guess it's not that different than the console versions.
Well it did have that extra level which was... OK. But it was worth it to hear Jim say "I'm nude!". I remember my girlfriend at the time getting a big kick out of the Sega CD version of that game for whatever reason. It's definitely the definitive version of the first game.

It was so cool and popular that it even got Nintendo games in it! (by Hudson Soft, licensed from Nintendo) Like Ice Climber, Excitebike, NES golf, and variations of Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. Special!
Not to mention, it has a version of Space Harrier that sounds amazing!

I always loved the port of the Smurfs. It had exclusive cut scenes that made it seem like you were watching an episode of the show. Other games I'd play through, Sonic CD, Prince of Persia, both Ecco 1 and 2, Spider-Man, Snatcher, Sol-Feace, Time Gal, Popful Mail, Power Rangers, Mickey Mania, NBA Jam, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Lords of Thunder, and Keio Flyng Squadron. I like Cute em ups too.
... why no Wonderdog?? This was a fantastic platformer by Core, and my favorite Sega CD game. Lots of levels, a ton of different enwmies, great graphics and music, and spot-on controls... yet this game never gets any love.
A really worthy episode of Game Sack! I love the dynamic you guys have, Dave always cracks me up. I loved all the details in the games too, like the characters personalized to look like you guys. You also featured great not so covered games and a ton of information neatly organized about each one. This was one hell of an episode!! I LOVED the end gags as always, but these cracked me up! I will probably watch this episode a bunch of times!
This review changed my thoughts about SegaCD.It seems to be a quite powerful attachment for its time,if you exclude the FMV based games,which in my opinion was a little bit lame.By the way,please GameSack,make an episode of Amiga CD 32 console.Nobody has made so far a descend review for this system!Give it a try,thanks!

Nice episode guys.This actually focuses on the good games of Sega-CD rather than the poor FMV-based ones.The problem was that Sega back then advertised mainly the FMV games and that's why most people thought it only offered games like that.This video clarifies things a little bit.And the Brimaxian song is downright hilarious.
Sega did such a terrible job marketing the system. It was widely thought of as a failure, as they tried to push the FMV games the most, even though they were by far the worst ones on the system. There were just so many great games that were for the most part unknown unless you were really in the know. And Sega also made a huge mistake by going with the mechanical tray model first instead of a more reliable pop-top version.
Thank you for properly showing off the Sega CD. So tired of pretty much everyone on the Internet shitting on it.
