The Saturn is so underappreciated because the best games never came out in North America or Europe and even SEGA Rally was supposedly rushed for the North American release which had missing backgrounds and whatnot. SEGA royally screwed up the Saturn's launch from the gate and never could recover. The Saturn was considered a success in Japan though.
Yeah, the North American launch got botched just to get a lead on Playstation and it backfired plus they didn't bring many of its best titles like you said. It looks to me like it could've kept Sega as a major power in the video game world as the games on it look VERY impressive and on the level of PS1 games, too bad it flopped in North America and Europe.......
It seems like the Sega Saturn is even more underrated than the Dreamcast. I really wish I had a Saturn. They are more expensive to buy than the Dreamcast.
I had one growing up, and I played it almost as much as I played my PS1. It had some awesome games. That was the one generation of consoles where I had more than one system, and man did I luck out.
It's not really that underrated. Sega Saturn was just not that good of a system. On the other hand the Dreamcast was a very innovative and interesting system with a good library to boot. So Dreamcast definitely underrated, Saturn.....not so much.
The ninjas turn into wooden log or stone because that is a substitution jutsu like you could see in Naruto. The idea is, the ninja escapes death by putting a log/rock/whatever in the way of the final attack and escaping. It's actually a clever way to explain how your character comes to life after a death.
FYI deep scan was a game from the Sega sg-1000. the reason why was included was because it was used as a mini game where every submarine you destroy you get an extra continue for the main game. by the standard its actually pretty cool
Legendary Chop Chop The controller and fighting games were enough for me. Virtua Fighter 2(packed in with VC and Daytona), Marvel Super Heroes and Street Fighter Alpha were all I needed, especially with the controller. Found other games later on.
There were some good games that I played. D, ENEMY ZERO, MANSION OF HIDDEN SOULS SATURN VERSION, PANZER DRAGOON 1,2, CLOCKWORK KNIGHT, GHEN WAR, OFF WORLD INTERCEPTOR 3,000, FIGHTERS MEGA MIX< VIRUA FIGHTER 2, FIGHTING VIPERS, DRAGON FORCE to name some. I did snag some good imports and the trnslator cartridge. I did get the PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION and DRAGON FORCE 2.
That's right this year hereby marks the 20th anniversary when both the Sega Saturn and Original PlayStation were released in 1995...man I feel old now.
My Sega Saturn to this day sits in storage because until I started watching Game Sack a few weeks ago, it never dawned on me to get a new cable for hooking up to a tv. At least i think that's what was wrong with it if I recall. I still have Night Warriors, Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey and Guardian Heroes for it though. Man I was stupid to trade in Panzer Dragoon Saga after finishing it though.
The Saturn is the only one of my retro consoles that I still keep hooked up to my TV. Not only because of the game library but because I love the Saturn's CD Player interface and the starship easter egg. It's a shame that there are so many games that I'm only getting to experience these days because of emulation.
I have a second model I fixed it the laser died when I got it and I had to replace it same now with power supply which I ordered the DC psu power supply board
Sega Saturn in 1998: Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force 3.2 ; 3.3 and Premium Disk, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Deep Fear, Sakura Taisen 2 aso. Oh and Space Invaders released 1996 and not 1998 xD
Even though the Sega Saturn does have an impressive library of fun games, I think it's a shame that the system didn't have many decent Sonic games released for it, even though "Sonic X-Treme" would have been a promising title for sure if it wasn't canceled the last minute and replaced by a 32-bit version of "Sonic 3D Blast".
Grew up with every Sega console and love the Saturn. Still have it with it still has some of my favorite games. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Guardian Heroes, Nights, etc. Great era.
It's crazy how far and fast games have come lol. I was already a pre-teen when i played some of this games on my Saturn and now I am still a young adult (cough cough) and I am playing games that just look from a hole different planet. Awesome to be a part of my generation and see all of this develop. I am very curious for the next 20 years!
I remember almost buying the Saturn because it got bundles with three games at one point. But my parents said no because I already had a Playstation and I think overall it was a good choice, so many good RPG's on the ps1.
My favorite Sega Saturn Games are: Alien Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 2, Doom, Deep Fear, Resident Evil, Tetris Plus, Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors, Virtua Fighter 1-2, Virtua Cop 1-2, X-Men: Children of the Atom, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Alone In the Dark 2, Enemy Zero, Star Fighter
My favorites are Elevator Action Returns, Battle Garegga, Batsugun, Guardian Force, The Parodius games, Darius Gaiden, The Salamander Collection, Capcom Generations 1&2, and Soukygurentai. I love Dodonpachi but prefer the arcade version to the Saturn port, same with In the Hunt.
Recently became the proud owner of a japanese white Saturn :) This episode really sparked my interest for the system and since I have been reading about it and it's games. I really, really like discovering consoles, especially when they have excellent games in their catalog. Which is the case here. There are a couple of games that I absolutely HAD to play in 240p on my crt(even though they can be downloaded on modern consoles), and that are available as Saturn imports. One of them is the Dungeons & Dragons collection. Holy shit, that game is gorgeous. I had to pick my jaw from the floor after seeing it for the first time. I can already say that this game is my top 5 gaming experiences of all-time.
Sega MegaDrive, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast are 3 of my all time favourite games consoles... SEGA knew how to make good games... all 3 consoles are still amazing to play to this day, SEGA stood the test of time and I will proudly, forever call myself a "SEGA FANBOY"
Panzer Dragoon is one of my all time favorite RPGs and was sadly a Saturn exclusive. The sadder part is we will likely never see a remaster of it since they lost the source code :(
You have my deepest respect for showing off the dreamcast adn the sega saturn. Thanks for taking me down memory lane with two of the most underrated systems that contain so many hidden gems. I subscribed so keep them coming.
For Imports and RAM-cart required games, you just need the Action Replay Plus cart. Has 1M/4M RAM, memory for game saves and lets you play imports. It's the only cart you need.
However, for the port of Metal Slug for the Saturn, the original 1MB RAM cart works better than the Action Replay. For some odd reason, it seems to lag more with the Action Replay.
Lass Rori I'll remember that when I finally track down Metal Slug. Similar for the first KOF game - sprites glitch without the original KOF specific 1MB cart.
Lass Rori Did you try that out yourself? I hear from some people that the slowdown is pretty much intentional on the game since I think the original arcade version also had some slowdowns.
SEGA!! I grew up a Sega fan boy. Started with the Master System. Adopted the Genesis, then moved up to the Saturn at launch. I know some people were disappointed with the Saturn, but I absolutely loved it! Panzer Dragoon still makes me all warm inside when I play it! My brother had a playstation, and while I can admit the graphics seemed smoother on the Playstation, and more titles were available on it, I had a blast on my Saturn. I wouldn't have traded it for a PSX . Seems odd without Sega in the hardware market. They will always hold a special place in my heart for all the great gaming memories they created.
I had a Sega Saturn. Even had the video cd card for it as well. I remember watching Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and changing the disc half way through the movie. Happy times.
In Die Hard Arcade for the SEGA Saturn, deep scan is a side game that allows you to gain extra credits. After you quit deep scan, the game will restart and add the extra lives.
So great that it's Craig Stadler. 2 years later and they could a had Tiger Woods. Back in 95 they coulda had Ernie Els or Phil. They were both young and "hip" but I just love that they went with Stadler lol
Just got a sega saturn (I'm a huge dreamcast fan and needed a new sega fix) my first stop was to watch you guys Game Sack (again might I add) and your views on the console. It's a wet dream for strategy rpg enthusiasts, I can't believe I waited so long!!!
You guys are like the history channel for me. I love listening to you when I'm editing or playing games. I love the breakdown of the hardware in the beginning. You two play off each other very well, and y'all are super funny. Thanks for the videos and giving me deeper understanding of the culture I grew up in. 🤓🕹👍🎮
I absolutely love the genesis, though I find that this era of gaming (ps1, Saturn, N64) is really hard to go back to. Mostly it's the primitive 3D that lacks detail and seems rather sluggish to control in a lot of cases. It feels like publishers were too forced to show off the latest 3D in order to compete, so they abandoned some amazing concepts from previous generations.
In Radiant Silvergun you were dodging the white and pink bullets. You are supposed to swat them with your sword to absorb them into a power meter which you can use to unleash a power sword attack. Hope that helps you have more fun next time.
Not sure how I found you guys but glad I did. In a world of Emulators and Pirated Roms. It is humbling to see true enthusiasts give classic games and systems the respect (or hatred) they deserve. Keep em coming guys! Sega Rules :-D
Emulators aren't all bad there good for people who really want to play certain games but can't afford it like my self why should the poor be robbed of experiencing great games all because we can't pay the greedy price that people are asking these days for certain games and consoles
Agreed, though most Japanese Saturn titles are leagues cheaper than their international versions. I only recommend emulating a game if you're curious about it, and want to give it a shot.
you can run burned games on the legit hardware pretty easily too, and saturn games look great on a CRT. not much wrong with it morally either considering that the saturn has been dead and buried for almost 2 decades at this point. saturn prices are just too crazy for me to bother with picking anything up that i can't get at a bargain price.
When I was 12 my dream was to own a Sega Saturn, but by the time I had the money to finally get it, the Playstation1 took over the 32b era... I remember crying when Sega announced that they would descontinue with the Sega Saturn. My favorite console is definitely the Mega Drive....ohhh amazing memories!!
Hey Joe just got a Saturn and love it! I was starting to worry wasn't going to live up to how high you set my expectations, but once I got Sega Ages and can play amazing ports of Outrun and your fave Space Harrier I was in heaven. Keep up the great work!
I loved the Darkstalkers 3 playstation port. I got the saturn version years later and was blown away. I spent a lot of time with the arcade version and the Saturn version holds up perfectly.
Man I miss old systems like the Saturn. Although I never owned one, I always wanted to get a Saturn but I just don't see many of them around. I love how Sega always thought about future upgrade-ability with the cartridge slot and mpeg video card. Too bad not many games used them. I think king of fighters 95 had an awesome idea with using both CD and cart for the game, bringing the best of both worlds to the Saturn, the storage capacity of CD and the speed of a cartridge. Imagine if more games tried things like that. They could even add more processing power and 3d rendering ability similar to the super fx chip in the snes with a special processor for one game, or an add on for many games like Segas own 32x. If used right the lifespan of the Saturn could have been much longer, allowing it to compete better with ps1 and n64. Who knows maybe it could've helped them retain market share until the dream cast was released which might've helped that system as well.. Well an old Sega fan boy can dream, right? Lol ;-)
Just a buy Saturn if you want one, they're only $80 or so - then add another $20 for the Action Replay cart and burn every game you ever wanted to play.
My friend had a Playstation (and he was very influential in my parents getting me one) and I would go around his house to play it. One day I went to his house and I saw he was playing a racing game which was Daytona USA and I noticed he wasn't playing it on a Playstation. Puzzled I asked him what was he playing it on and he said a Sega Saturn and that he swapped his Playstation for it. I was so bummed out and upset..LOL.
1) I'm convinced that if the Segata Sanshirou commercials had been released in the States, the Saturn would have done much better. 2) Dark Savior is pretty much synonymous with the Saturn to me. Such a great game. 3) Solar Eclipse (post credits), Cyber Speedway, and Three Dirty Dwarves were some of my favorite games on the Saturn. 4) There was a Japan only Dragon Ball Z game on the Saturn that my friend imported. I don't remember the name, but it was probably the most legit DBZ game I've played to date.
Matthew C If the later Metal Slug games were not Playstation exclusives those would have proven how much of a 2D beast the Saturn was. Especially since they all could have used the 4MB RAM and dominated the Playstation ports for sure due to the Saturn having superior 2D graphics to the Neo Geo AES and proved this with its port of TSS. You know, I bet this is why Sony decided to get their hands on the franchise first. They must have known that the Saturn would have made those games arcade perfect with their RAM expansion and superior 2D processor so they simply bought the rights to avoid losing. But, that does not make me laugh as much as looking back on how scared Sony got whenever the Saturn got ANY well-known 2D game. They would BEG developers to let them have it as well because they believed Sony was all about 3D. So in the end, Sony realized that their teaming up with SEGA could have been better than they thought.
Jonathan Vergara nah, if Bernie Stolar wasn't a goddamn idiot and Sega didn't launch it early, it could have been successful. I definitely recommend trying out Astal. It's rare, but not super expensive.
Sharif Sourour Yeah VF1 has some obvious quad use, hard to model people like that. Quads were good for walls though, the PS1 tended to glitch out along those diagonal polygon seams.
I still have mine in my closet. I haven't played most of these games. I am glad you mentioned Last Bronx and Virtual On. Most people haven't even heard of them.
The Saturn has so many great fan translations, with more coming out all the time. I’ve really enjoyed so many games that never made it over, thanks to my fenrir. If you have the means, it changed my whole view on the system when games like shining force 3 (parts 1 & 2) policenauts, grandia, lunar, linkel liver story, dragon force 2, Sakura wars, bulk slash and so many more became playable. I’m currently hoping assault suit leynos 2 and wachenroder get translated, and also princess crown would be great if it ever gets finished
You still haven't answered my question, David.

You ask many questions Craig Stadler. I'm sure he'd like to try to get it inside.

In Radiant Silvergun you were dodging the white and pink bullets. You are supposed to swat them with your sword to absorb them into a power meter which you can use to unleash a power sword attack. Hope that helps you have more fun next time.
Man, those pretty Saturn sprites....
Saturn has some amazing RPGs
I think we need to see this: Craig Stadler vs. "Where did you learn to fly?" from Cybermorph.
I really like your content guys. It's helped me get into retro gaming and I've started my collection recently.
Not sure how I found you guys but glad I did. In a world of Emulators and Pirated Roms. It is humbling to see true enthusiasts give classic games and systems the respect (or hatred) they deserve. Keep em coming guys! Sega Rules :-D
dipngoautocolor some sega saturn games do not run properly on an emulator so check out the compatibility list before you download a game
I was hoping that you'd mention Legend of Oasis. I really love that game.
This brought back so many memories, brilliant work
My friend had a Playstation (and he was very influential in my parents getting me one) and I would go around his house to play it. One day I went to his house and I saw he was playing a racing game which was Daytona USA and I noticed he wasn't playing it on a Playstation. Puzzled I asked him what was he playing it on and he said a Sega Saturn and that he swapped his Playstation for it. I was so bummed out and upset..LOL.
causerDAguv Haha! I guess this was early in the generation. Did he ever get another PlayStation?
No the next console he got was an n64
4:40 A brown tomato?? umm.. its the dude's HAT. lol :)
EVERYONE NOW! "SEGATA SANSHIROU! SEGATA SANSHIROU! SEGA SATURN, SHIRO!!!"
Still have my Saturn to this day. Have alot of these games including Panzer Dragoon Saga. Love Game Sack. Appreciate you!
Game Sack forever! :D Love you guys I'm just watching old vids again.
I don't remember the name, but it was probably the most legit DBZ game I've played to date.
personaklly I feel if the SNK titles were released in the US it would have save both the saturn and SNK
That would be Dragon Ball Z Legends. I still have my imported copy on PSOne
Cyber Speedway, ugh that game was amazing. I loved the art style and everything. I need to get one of these again
Jonathan Vergara nah, if Bernie Stolar wasn't a goddamn idiot and Sega didn't launch it early, it could have been successful.
I definitely recommend trying out Astal. It's rare, but not super expensive.
The Saturn renders quads, not polygons.
I have the PAL-E retail Die Hard Arcade. It was called Dynamite Dekka in Japan.
whats the difference between quads and polygons?
I think he meant to say quads instead of tris. Either way it's polygons.
It's also a bit of a misnomer for the platform since the Saturn can draw triangles, it just renders quads faster so they tried to use quads more.
Explains why models often looked a bit blockier but less glitchy.
Sharif Sourour Yeah VF1 has some obvious quad use, hard to model people like that. Quads were good for walls though, the PS1 tended to glitch out along those diagonal polygon seams.
I would not be sad if there was a Saturn episode 2!
That “don’t touch me” felt so real 😭
This deserves a part 2, as do the Dreamcast and GameCube
I loved the Saturn. one of the best systems ever. As a fighting game junkie.. Saturn was heaven for me.
Absolute!
Oh man, the amount of games packed into this episode is astounding. This is excellent!
"Think you get inside mine." "Please don't ask me that any more Mr. Stadler"
Grandia is by far one of the best RPG's I have ever played! Seriously underrated. I'm surprised it was left out of the RPG episodes xD
NOW I WANT A SATURN!!!!
SEGA!
I can't believe they did not show D at all or Myst, Sega Saturn For Life ; )
I still have mine in my closet. I haven't played most of these games. I am glad you mentioned Last Bronx and Virtual On. Most people haven't even heard of them.
That ending was hilarious.
They used "The Spiral" from Scorcher's soundtrack for the intro track.
Yep, I'm that big a Saturn fanboy.
I've never even heard of several of the games you mentioned. Now I gotta try and pick these games up for my Saturn collection someday.
