    I would suggest 2 things. One is that you clean up the wire terminals so that they are free of any corrosion. Nice clean metal for optimal electrical flow.
    The other is to definitely not over tighten the nuts on the starter wires. I had someone over tighten them on a new starter for me, and a few months later the starter needed to be replaced. Over tightening apparently caused damage to wires on the inside. Twisting them off or something.

      so I went in to change the starter out. used your tips & still couldn't get it out. There just wasn't enough room to finagle it out. My buddy comes over & his idea is to remove the tire. Taking a closer look we see it just couldn't back out. Easiest thing was removing the dipstick. There is a 15mm bolt holding the dipstick housing. (removing the dipstick from the housing makes reinstallation a lot easier). With the dipstick housing out of the way there was enough room to remove the starter. That is another option if nothing else works.

    I liked this video, especially when you said not to be timid pushing the wires to get the old starter free. But your 03 Silverado and my 05 Yukon Denali are very different: the Denali is 4WD. There is a LOT less room to install my new starter.

    • @gregc33487
      @gregc33487 9 месяцев назад

      Yeah. I have a 05 Silverado and it’s 4x4. I recently had to replace the crankshaft position sensor and while doing it you have to remove the starter. The sensor is above the starter. Luckily you just need to unbolt and push it out of the way.. But while in there I realized how tough it would be to actually change the starter. And my truck is almost at 212k miles so it’s only a matter of time

      I just yanked mine loose on my 2000 Sierra and it’s a whole nother kinda ugly. Mine has a big aluminum knuckle about where the camera is and I can’t even force it back enough to tip the nose one out or even see what it’s hitting on. I’ve owned a lot of old GMs over the last many decades and changed starters on all of them but this beast is something else.😓

    question. i have an 05 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. Alternator has been recently replaced as of less than a month, refurbished Duralast, battery is a yellow cap Optima. recently her start has been sluggish, charged the battery assuming it was that. it was fine for a bit but started the sluggish start again after .. a week, and there’s times where it’s super sluggish, like a full 1 mississippi and a half second type of start. now she’s starting up again with the slug start and i’ve charged this battery twice at this point. she’s not being nice with me pero la tengo chiquiada. 😭

    Actually, the first thing to check would be a starter relay and fuse, not replacing the starter.

      Replacing the starter wasn't the first thing I did you probably didn't watch the video

      @ERICSDIYGARAGE please point to where you said and/or did check the relay and/or the fuse.
      I watched it a second time and still a nothing burger.
      Something I notice the 2nd time.
      What does spark and fuel ⛽️ have to do with the engine not turning over?

    • @ERICSDIYGARAGE
      @ERICSDIYGARAGE  2 месяца назад

      Notice how I didn't title this video. what is the first thing to check when your vehicle doesn't start. Regardless, first thing I do as a mechanic is verify the complaint. Vehicle doesn't turn over check✔️ step two do we have a good battery ✔️ step 3 is the starter seleniod clicking that rules out a issue with a relay and fuse ✔️. Step 4 verify the starter is defective, taping it with a hammer, and usually gets the motor working short term. Step 5 replace the starter. Every case might be different so it won't always be a step by step clear cut answer. So why would I check a fuse and relay first if I don't even know If i have a good battery or not

    • @Butchsiek
      @Butchsiek 2 месяца назад

      @ERICSDIYGARAGE You contradicted yourself when saying you're replacing the starter, then mention fuel and spark are good.
      But go into details it's about replacing the starter.
      Duh...
      your step 3 is flawed .
      If there isn't a clicking sound, it still could be the solenoid is bad.
      Or the clicking sound you hear is a relay, as some relays make a louder clicking sound.
      I'm 73, I worked on autos for 60 years.
      If a person is looking for a starter issue and you post replacing a starter, without the slightest reason as what could be the cause, other than mentioning fuel and spark is OK, but has nothing to do with the engine turning over.
      Is not a sign of a good mechanic.
      My sister's neighbor bought a Chevy.
      I told him everything to look for because some people abuse trucks.
      He still went and did the opposite and even took it to a shop, to inspect it for issues, prior to spending $5500, for the piece of crap.
      I looked it for 3 minutes and pointed out to him the following for not buying it,
      Battery date,
      Oil looked like crude oil,
      Transmission fluid was brown,
      Tires wearing unevenly,
      Steering cylinder leaking,
      tie rod ends need replacing, wheel bearings are bad, making grinding sounds,
      Brakes need replacing,
      Cracked windshield,
      Coolant was brownish.
      I told him I would have offered $1000 or walked away and asked the shop that did the inspection for his money back as they never listed anything I saw.
      Then the first thing g in his truck went bad, starter.
      I went through the process to determine the cause.
      Battery, relay, fuse, I showed him how to check with a meter and by switching 2 relays to verify the relay is good.
      I then told him like you did in the video, tap on the solenoid..
      He did and was happier than a frog that just caught its dinner.
      Instead of replacing the starter as I used this video for him to see.
      He xarried a hammer in the truck. Until the start left him sitting in a parking lot.
      I also told him, he might be able to flip over the copper disc in the solenoid, unless it's not removable like they were once before.
      Saved a lot of money.
      He bought a starter on Amazing for $35.
      I hope it lasts him longer the 2 years.
