Thank you for this great video. It really helped out a lot. I had tried to do in all from under the car (2003 Suburban) but this was too hard for me. I had given up and was going to take it to a mechanic, who wanted $250 labor to install my starter. After watching your video, I took the passenger side tire off and that was the solution for me. No need to remove the plastic wheels well, just the tire. Just taking the tire off allowed me to get to the electrical connections and was able to remove them using a small 1/4 inch drive socket. The starter was then very easy to remove and replace. For me, reattaching the electrical wires after bolting the new starter in seemed to work out well. Thanks again! This was a great help!
At 1:06 - Removing the transmission inspection cover/ dust shield. I tried installing the starter with this in place on a 2003 Sierra 1500 / 4.8L for an embarrassingly long time- So long I started looking at RUclips videos. Then I saw Master Jacks showing this cover, and oh yeah, removed the cover on my truck, and that [lovely] starter was fully installed in another ten minutes. THANK YOU Master Jacks.
2002 CHEVY SUBURBAN …Just in case anyone was having this problem . No crank no start …… fuel and battery gauges flip up still like it’s going to start and then dead silence . Replaced starter and back on the rd . Also when it went out couple issues I had was I tried jumping it one more time with a flat head and it blew the 40 amp fuse which caused the gas and battery gauge to stop flipping up when key was turned to on position . Lastly the replacement starter I purchased was longer than the original . So if you ran into that problem just know it will ….. I repeat will fit so don’t worry . Hope I helped someone as I searched every video looking for someone with the same issue on their suburban or if the larger one would fit and could t find not one video .
Thank you ever so much for being so straight and to the point. Lord knows there are a hundred videos on how to change a starter but none are as efficient and less time wasting than your marvelous video!! Thank you from the bottom of my 'long, miserable hours wasted watching people talk nonsense' heart. For real for real. I have watched 9000 videos on RUclips and you, sir, are the first one I ever subscribed to.
This video helped a lot. I used my 1/4” air ratchet and your tips and did the whole job in an hour and 15 min. Use a 13 mm deep well socket for the main terminal lug nut on the starter and a shallow 8mm for the small one. Thanks!
This video was extremely helpful, thank you. Just finished this job up. I didn’t have a jack but was still able to do this with the tire on and truck on the ground. I’ll reemphasize the part at 1:35. Take the 13mm nut off the solenoid before you try and wrestle with removing the starter, I forgot to and the starter would not come out enough. To put that cable back on at the end, I used a swivel head and two 6” extensions on a ratchet, between the frame and manifold heat shield. Play around with the positioning a bit. It was enough to get the nut on tight.
Thanks for the video. I was able to replace mine without using jack. Shimmy up under and got it out. Was easier for me to disconnect main wire then push stater back. All good great video and can be done without lift or even a jack if you can fit underneath.
Appreciate it you for making this video , my truck (2003 Silverado) would not crank battery was good. Bought the starter & replaced myself within an hour frame. In my experience I didn't have to remove the oil sensor I was able to carefully maneuver around it. Also was able to remove and tighten connections all from the bottom of the truck just had to be extra careful.
Little tip if you take off the heat shield from the side exhaust you get more than enough space to turn the bolts. I am by no means a mechanic but this helped me a lot.
Doing mine now . Found your video due to Having trouble getting the damn thing back in . No way in hell you popped that thing back in so smooth . Yea it was speed up but damn you made It look like nothing . Anyways here I go again. This has been the only hold up …… it came out damn near when I released the last bolt prettty much fell in my hands ….. it’s just getting it in …. Lol kinda like the first time . Hahaha nice job
This video helped me tremendously. Of course I waited for the temps to warm up to mid 20s before I tackled the job. I ended up not taking the tire off or the oil sensor plug. Thanks! Also, thanks for listing the tools needed.
So it took my little longer to do this, but thank you for mentioning the tire removal. As much as I didn't want to I had to take it off. Thank you for this video it helped a lot.
Just watch 3 other videos where they didn't take the wheel off. And they could Push the starter up far enough.and drop that starter down and get the wires off
Came here for one simple reason. I bought a Chrysler 300 that needed a starter. Figured it would be easy fix. 12 hrs later I finally got it. Looking at buying a 1500 Chevy and needed to make sure it was easier than the 300
Your video helped me save time and money. Ridiculous you need to take off a wheel and the shroud but it helped. I personally want to meet the engineer behind this design! New starter is in and fired right up like it should.
i just lift up the truck on the passenger side without removing tire. i got the starter out in 5 mins from the bottom. no need to remove anything. putting it back in took a little longer cause you have to wiggle the starter around until it goes back in.
Thanks for this. I’m in the process of dropping my transmission and last step before removing the bell housing bolts and lowering the trans was removing the starter. Was struggling to get it and it started raining so I quit for the day. I think the heat shield and wire are the hang up.
Wow, dude... You took what many have described as difficult and made it look F'n amazingly easy... Whether it is, or not, is impertinent... You did a great job simplifying this daunting task... ✌️
Master Jacks: Great video !! Having the starter/solenoid replaced after installing a new battery so I have my fingers crossed that this will be a 100% solution starting up. ( I already checked my fuses and relays). Thanks.
Great video! Made it look super easy. I was struggling for a little there then watched your video. The way I go it in was to grab the end with two hands (closest towards the front of the truck) and wiggled while applying lots of pressure. Eventually, it found its way and popped right in. Was originally working from under the truck, but then found it easier to work from the side.
Thank you very much! I used your video as my guide! Worked like a charm. Your explanation made it easy! Semper Fidelis! CWO4 USMCR [Ret]. 17 February 1969 - 1 August 2004

thanks for the video. it's good to get an idea with videos like this when replacing anything on a car you never touched before. I've been working on subaru's and other imports for a decade now and still look for how to videos like this, because I never worked on a yukon or anything similar to it. my friend needs his starter replaced on his yukon and this is pretty helpful without me going in there blind.
Good video. Thanks. I did find that with extensions and a universal joint on my ratchet I could reach the front of the starter to remove the two cables before removing the bolts holding the starter in. Really easy to install the starter.
Excellent video, helped me know what to worry about and what not to bother with. I do wonder which truck this was on because on my 3500 4wd I had plenty enough room to get a small rachet up in there without pulling the oil sensor, wheel, or wheel well
There is a bracket that holds the power wire to the frame. If you remove that it gives you a lot more wire to move the starter around so you can remove the wire without doing what you had to do
I was able to get the starter down before removing the 13mm bolt cable. Made it easier to get it off than having to maneuver the wrench around the chassis etc.
Oh gosh my yukon dosnt wanna start so took of the battery turns out its a good battery. So took off the altornator and autozone told me its a good altornator. I lost hope thinking trying to do the starter is hard but you made it look so easy. I might just try checking my starter thanks
You get it up and running? My 99 Silverado has been draining out my battery weekly. Finally she died on me. I’m going to replace the starter. Hopefully that’s all it is. If not oh well. She’s 20 yrs old. Could use new posts little by little.
My 04 GMC Sierra won’t start. Been sitting a little while. Was running fine. I replaced battery and have power but when I turn the key the headlights go out and I hear nothing. No clicking. Replaced a couple other things now I’m thinking it’s the starter or solenoid. Great video. Hope this helps me get going again. Thank you.
Nice job. The fender was a damn good idea. Unfortunately for me. I just wished that they were all pop out clips. But No. lol. Stay safe and a Salute to you.
I did not take off the wheel. I did take off the wheel well cover. A 1/4 in socket wrench with the 8mm definitely was helpful. Rarely do i even feel the want to make a comment on anything. When i do though It’s because i considered it a bit more… extraordinary than most other things. Maybe that is just the description of “when great minds think alike” could be? Awesome video man, yes it was just a starter removal and install but, it could not be demonstrated much better then what just had done. This is the first clip i’ve seen as well. Again awesome work man, you can reach out to that much more people to help because of that. +1 subscriber here.
Don't need to remove wheel, just remove bolt holding 2 aluminium tubes to the engine, also unclip 2 electric wires below that nut that go to starter, then you can push wires and tubes out of the way so you can push starter toward front to disengage from transmission. Electric line nuts can be removed once you get starter out, removing heat shield is important, it just swivels and unclips.
Was wondering if i should take off the wheel well cover now i see it gives you a little more room to navigate the starter thanks and also for the nuts size
There are other ways, you don't necessary need to reach it positive terminal 13mm from fender side. move right behind the wheel and behind the frame. However you need long extension 8 inch or for connect two 4 inch and wobble socket! You need to access because of oil tube dip stick.
I just did mine and checked everything I have a gap between the flywheel and starter, I mean that's where the mounting bolt holes are I cannot push it further in. The starter is new same as this it was tested I have power when cranking and constant power to the 13m nut bolt, I checked relays switched them around and it just makes a noise like it spins but teeth won't engage I'm going crazy here cannot figure it out. I'm working on an 05 Envoy Denali, but there's part of the frame that's stoping the starter from falling through. In your video it doesn't look like you're having to deal with the frame or cross members.

nice video I want to install a oil pump. will the starter have to be removed to lock down the flywheel w/ either a screwdriver or a lock tool? are there any differnces in the 07 trailblazer w/ 5.3?
Did you really pull the wires back down around the back of the starter (where they Y with the oil level plug branching off)? Or did you redo it off camera? There is no slack in those wires for anything.
I have a 1999 chevy Silverado 2000s body style 5.3L my issue is when I turn the key it doesn’t even make that clicking sound just nothing it’s like the battery is not even connected all the lights turn on the dash like normal before you start a car
I would say your starter is highly suspect. Sometimes you won't even get a click. Starters often fail in cold temps when mechanical resistance and amperage draw are high. You could try wacking the side of the starter with a hammer or getting the vehicle to a warm location to see if it fires.
Seems complicated but love how the video it's short and informative. Tired of watching 12+ minute videos for something that could be explained quick.
Thank you for this great video. It really helped out a lot. I had tried to do in all from under the car (2003 Suburban) but this was too hard for me. Thanks for the video. My ignition fuse would blow when I tried to start it. Voltage pointed to a bad starter. Swapped it out and back up and running
Finally, a channel that gives the bolt size! Thank you for the help.
all This

Try starting the new one before replacing all the other crap in case you have a bad new starter.
Did you really pull the wires back down around the back of the starter (where they Y with the oil level plug branching off)? Or did you redo it off camera? There is no slack in those wires for anything.
